RTC -- Quick notes:I got it totally wrong when I thought this would be a beach read。 Light, it is not。 But it is absolutely wonderful。 It's contemporary fic, not a romance or a rom-com。 If you liked Dear Emmie Blue and Four Weddings and Funeral (the limited series, not the movie), this one is in your wheelhouse。 CW: death, grief, estrangement from family, verbal abuse RTC -- Quick notes:I got it totally wrong when I thought this would be a beach read。 Light, it is not。 But it is absolutely wonderful。 It's contemporary fic, not a romance or a rom-com。 If you liked Dear Emmie Blue and Four Weddings and Funeral (the limited series, not the movie), this one is in your wheelhouse。 CW: death, grief, estrangement from family, verbal abuse 。。。more

The kind of book that if you read originally on an e-reader, you have to go buy the paperback copy after finishing it just so you can hold onto it in a more tangible way。 I can't wait to read more by Mhairi McFarlane。 The kind of book that if you read originally on an e-reader, you have to go buy the paperback copy after finishing it just so you can hold onto it in a more tangible way。 I can't wait to read more by Mhairi McFarlane。 。。。more

*5+ Stars!I finished reading this book a couple of days ago, but I find myself struggling to find the adequate words to review it。 This book is the whole package。 There, I said it。 I knew very early on that it was going to be special。 It gave me that familiar feeling that I get when a book just checks off every mark。 In all honesty, I always find it difficult to express how I feel about a book that I fall in I love with; I never believe that I can do it the justice that it deserves。 Just Last N *5+ Stars!I finished reading this book a couple of days ago, but I find myself struggling to find the adequate words to review it。 This book is the whole package。 There, I said it。 I knew very early on that it was going to be special。 It gave me that familiar feeling that I get when a book just checks off every mark。 In all honesty, I always find it difficult to express how I feel about a book that I fall in I love with; I never believe that I can do it the justice that it deserves。 Just Last Night is a book that I want everyone to read。 I can’t recommend it enough。If humor is what you’re in search of, then you will get your share, but this novel is so much more than a good laugh here and there。 The characters are complex and well developed。 The story is deep and emotional。 There was an intimacy that I felt while reading it。 I felt as though I knew this group of friends。 I could have easily seen myself out at trivia night with them, sharing some laughs, and a pint or two of ale。McFarlane established my connection with these characters early on, and I was completely absorbed in their lives。 They weren’t some perfect, ideal group of friends。 They had known each other since their school days, they were well acquainted and close, some closer than others。 They had their share of flaws and issues; they could be any one of us, they were “normal。”I don’t want to get into too much detail about the story, however, I will say that the story went in a direction that I didn’t expect, and do you know what? It couldn’t have been better! It threw some surprises at me that I never saw coming, but it was exactly what the story needed。 This novel hurt, it was painful, angsty, filled me with anticipation and hope, and made me believe in the true power of friendship and love。How do we ever really know the people in our lives? With secrets, revelations, angst, love, and an abundance of emotion, I was in my zone, my happy place, and this novel ended up being everything that I search for as a reader。I can’t sing this book’s praises enough。 Just Last Night will definitely be gracing my list of favorite books of 2021, and Mhairi McFarlane has cemented herself as one of my must-read authors! I wish I could read it all over again for the very first time。 。。。more

Stick with it! There were many times I wanted to put this one down, but just keep going and it really picks up around page 200。 All the lead-in of the first half of the book is actually important for understanding all of the characters, though may seem boring at the time。 Mhairi's incorporation of heavy topics in a romantic comedy was the combination I didn't know I needed! Just Last Night is predominantly about grief。 And so, if you have experienced loss recently, this book may be a trigger。With that being said, I’ve spoken to other book buddies who have said that McFarlane exemplifies grief superbly in this novel and that it’s a book not to be missed because of that aspect of it。I have to say that the first half of the novel was quite difficult for me to read because of the circumstances I was currently in (a third lockdown) greatly affected what was palatable fo Just Last Night is predominantly about grief。 And so, if you have experienced loss recently, this book may be a trigger。With that being said, I’ve spoken to other book buddies who have said that McFarlane exemplifies grief superbly in this novel and that it’s a book not to be missed because of that aspect of it。I have to say that the first half of the novel was quite difficult for me to read because of the circumstances I was currently in (a third lockdown) greatly affected what was palatable for me reading-wise。 However, as I was reading this for a buddy read, I pushed through and I’m happy I did。Why? Well, because hidden amongst the loss that the protagonist Eve was experiencing, was a blossoming love story of two people going through a horrible time in their life and in the end, finding one another。Unfortunately, it’s difficult for me to write much else without revealing spoilers and so, what I will leave off with is that although this book deals with heavy issues, it’s written so beautifully with underlying sarcastic humour and moments of camaraderie that really make this book enjoyable。Thank you HarperCollins Canada for the ARC。 Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own。 。。。more

Oh, how this one tugged at my heart and tears! I loved the character development in this book, which is essentially a romance but deals with heavy topics along the way (trigger warnings needed for some)。 Well-written, entertaining, and satisfying。 If romance isn't your genre, this may not be for you, but for those who love a sweet redemption love story, this one ranked among the best for me。 Oh, how this one tugged at my heart and tears! Some unexpected insights into grief which were good, but not a ton of sex/sexy moments。 Definitely low on the banana scale。 Higher on the cute(ish) scale。

One of my first thoughts early on was, "why on earth is this marketed as a rom-com?" It shouldn't be。 It's deeply emotional, highly cathartic and beautiful - but definitely not your average rom-com。 Be prepared for loss, grief, abuse (and trauma), cheating and unrequited love。 But oh my goodness, it's so worth it。 One of my first thoughts early on was, "why on earth is this marketed as a rom-com?" 3。5 stars, I think?I just finished this a few minutes ago and I’m feeling raw and unsure about how much I actually liked it。It was addicting and hard to put down。 It also hurt me a lot。 I flew through the book, which is a good thing, but it also bummed me out the majority of the time。 Even now I have this lingering sense of sadness so。。。idk。 Really well written but something you’ve gotta be in the mood for。 Buddy read with my favorite girls ❤️

A buddy read with the usual suspects: Fran x2, Aoife and Jess <3It’s been a while since a book made me cry。 Don’t let the bright cover trick you into thinking this is a cheery and light book because it’s quite the opposite honestly。

Wow。 I’m so glad I went into this completely blind。 Having just finished it tho, I will say it is completely miss marketed。 I wouldn’t consider it a romance in the sense that, “the romance” isn’t the point of the story。

Another fabulous Mhairi McFlarlane novel with a balance of humour, poignancy, and depth。 The first twist hit me unexpectedly and from there I was hooked to unpack the secrets within the lives of Eve, Susie, Ed and Justin。 Thoroughly enjoyed the story, characters, and 'what ifs' I found myself being asked。 Another fabulous Mhairi McFlarlane novel with a balance of humour, poignancy, and depth。 The first twist hit me unexpectedly and from there I was hooked to unpack the secrets within the lives of Eve, Susie, Ed and Justin。 Thoroughly enjoyed the story, characters, and 'what ifs' I found myself being asked。 。。。more

I had zero interest until Finlay started to be more involved but overall it was good! I’m glad I got it from the library or I might not have continued based on the first 30%。 Honestly it was upsetting for a lot of the book but had moments that made me happy throughout so it never felt too heavy。。。

I really love Mhairi’s books, i feel like she always knows exactly what I’m looking for in a good story。 The British slang and setting takes me back to the time when i did live in England and it makes me so happy to be in that world again。 Truly another amazing book, I read If I Never Met You, and I have enjoyed her writing since then。 This one was a sad but sweet story and i loved the ending! Thank you for creating Eve and her story ❤️

3。5This started out a bit slow and took me a while to get into, but once Finley and Eve take their trip was when the book started to pick up for me。 I enjoyed seeing Finley and Eve grow closer and learn more about each other。 This was a predictable read that had some cute, fun moments, but also some emotionally hard moments that are surrounded by a tragic moment。 Overall, an enjoyable read。

This was a grief+comedy filled contemporary romance, and it was just the BEST。This book made me cry in the prologue itself。 This book made me ugly cry throughout, but it also made me laugh out loud。 This book is beautiful in terms of plots and characters。。 but what is most beautiful about this book is the author's writing。"This is what I never knew about loss—it’s also about what you gain。 You carry a weight that you never had before。 It’s never behind you。 It’s alongside you。""I miss you。 I hat This was a grief+comedy filled contemporary romance, and it was just the BEST。This book made me cry in the prologue itself。 This book made me ugly cry throughout, but it also made me laugh out loud。 This book is beautiful in terms of plots and characters。。 but what is most beautiful about this book is the author's writing。"This is what I never knew about loss—it’s also about what you gain。 You carry a weight that you never had before。 It’s never behind you。 It’s alongside you。""I miss you。 I hate inventing you, scripting your lines, instead of having the original。""。。。 it was just another world, exactly like this one, but with a dramatic difference。 Your presence。 Your presence, which I took for granted。""You are never behind me。 You are never something that happened。 You are always alongside me。"If you like contemporary romances, and if you're okay with the TW (death of a close person, dealing with grief after the death, and a fairly gruesome car accident which is described in detail once in the book), you HAVE to read this book。 It is worth every one of its 400 odd pages 💛💛 。。。more

I’m going to refrain, for the most part, from my usual level of smart assery for this review。 The subject matter in this one, grief and how different people handle it, was real, raw, and wasn’t at all what I was expecting going into this one。 Like the characters, I lost one of my best friends in a traumatic way a few years ago。 It’s a pain that, although more numb now than searing, never truly goes away。My SynopsisI’m going to try to keep this as spolier free as I possibly can, but honestly, it’ I’m going to refrain, for the most part, from my usual level of smart assery for this review。 The subject matter in this one, grief and how different people handle it, was real, raw, and wasn’t at all what I was expecting going into this one。 Like the characters, I lost one of my best friends in a traumatic way a few years ago。 It’s a pain that, although more numb now than searing, never truly goes away。My SynopsisI’m going to try to keep this as spolier free as I possibly can, but honestly, it’s not that easy with this one。 In the beginning。 we have four lifelong friends, MC Eve, Susie, Justin and Ed。 Everything is hunky dory, except Eve is in love with Ed, who’s dating Hestor a/k/a a garbage human。 Why is Eve in love with Ed, then? Well, as it turns out, Ed professed his love for Eve right before he left for college, only to shack up with good ol’ Hesty later, as Ed is also a garbage human。 Anywho, one fateful night, the friends go their separate ways after a night out, when one of them is tragically killed in a freak accident (of course, we know it’s not Eve, as that would have cut the book pretty short)。 How will the remaining friends cope with this loss and what devastating secrets did the deceased leave behind? Guess you’ll have to find out。My ReviewSo many emotions with this one。 @mhairimcf can write。 She can write drama; she can write humor; she can write gut-wrenching sadness。 She can just write it all。 I will say the first part of this one is sad, like, depressingly sad, and like I said above, the loss hit a little close to home for me (and I’m sure many other people)。 But once you get past that, the story picks up and you begin to feel a whole gamut of emotions: frustration, betrayal, hope, and swoon (that’s an emotion and I’ll die on that hill)。 Although there were times I wanted to shake Eve, I understood why she did what she did and held onto the people she held onto。 And the love story! Enemies-to-lovers is my jam, and this read is a prime example of why。 A beautiful read; one that I’m certain will be in my top ten faves of the year。 。。。more
