Summary

WITH GREAT POWER COMES GRAVE DANGER。

After decades of oppression, the elves and other races are fighting each other and attacking the humans in ever-growing numbers。 The kings and armies fear invasion from across the river - but fear their neighbours more。 Dissent and intrigue fester in this time of contempt。

As Ciri learns to control her magic, Geralt and Yennefer must protect the orphaned heir who is sought by all sides。 For the child of prophecy has the power to change the world - if she lives to use it。

Time of Contempt is the second novel in Andrzej Sapkowski's epic series set in the Witcher world, following Blood of Elves

Getting better! Loads happened in this one。 More names from the games appearing too, especially lesser known characters。

Entertaining storyI had read the first installment not too long ago, and was left with the feeling of wanting to know more。 The story starts where it left off in book one and events build up。 Ciri, Yennifer and Geralt, as well as Dandelion all playing their parts。 At some point in the book they get split up, and then we follow what happened to Geralt shortly, and end with following what’s happening to Ciri。Personally found that after the initial action, the book slows down a little bit。 I’m defi Entertaining storyI had read the first installment not too long ago, and was left with the feeling of wanting to know more。 The story starts where it left off in book one and events build up。 Ciri, Yennifer and Geralt, as well as Dandelion all playing their parts。 At some point in the book they get split up, and then we follow what happened to Geralt shortly, and end with following what’s happening to Ciri。Personally found that after the initial action, the book slows down a little bit。 I’m definitely left with questions, and I’ve no doubt they’ll get answered。 Having finished it I am feeling a little bit like I have only half a story。 Some parts I thought Ciri was becoming a bit of a weak character, and I sort of expected her to grow into something stronger。 I’m sure we’re not near the end of her story and what she’ll grow into。 But sooo much there is left untold in this book。Overall hungry for more and I love the entertainment level of this installment。 。。。more

I truly did not enjoy this book。 So many things about it were incredibly off putting and were it not for the fact that I am incredibly determined, this might have ended the series for me。

I have pretty mixed feelings about this book。 Overall, though, I enjoyed it。 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑻𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒕 doesn’t have quite as much action as the other Witcher books that I’ve read at this point (the novellas, Sword of Destiny, and Blood of Elves)。 Additionally, the long scenes of dialogue and the VERY long chapters (the book is 331pgs long with only 7 chapters) made it feel like a very long and drawn-out read。 There were some elements that I really enjoyed though! You know, when I come right down to this series, like any other epic fantasy I've read, it all hangs on how much I get into the characters。No matter what kind of action sequences come around or how much cool magic gets thrown in our faces or what kind of war blows up, I'm still tied up in my love of Geralt, Yennifer, and Ciri。 When things get dark and the contempt surrounds everyone, I'm rooting for them。 And the bard, too。 :) And little miss unrequited。 :)After that point, I'm honestly amazed a You know, when I come right down to this series, like any other epic fantasy I've read, it all hangs on how much I get into the characters。No matter what kind of action sequences come around or how much cool magic gets thrown in our faces or what kind of war blows up, I'm still tied up in my love of Geralt, Yennifer, and Ciri。 When things get dark and the contempt surrounds everyone, I'm rooting for them。 And the bard, too。 :) And little miss unrequited。 :)After that point, I'm honestly amazed at how well I received this novel inside my head。 Its structure and the way it flits from several different storytelling styles, its truly surprising (and awesome) jabs in the plot, and the wicked turns that come about later make me rather want to scream。 But that's only because this book DOES NOT FOLLOW NORMAL STRUCTURE。 Then again, neither did Blood of Elves。 Or the two story collections。 The way the tale comes out always keeps me on my toes, keeps everything feeling fresh, and there's no way I can't compare this against so many other epic fantasies, but one thing I CAN say is that it tells stories around corners。 You may KNOW something is coming, but Sapkowski truly lulls you into believing that THIS cool scene here is the pinnacle of THIS section, and then he comes right around and slams your head against the table and you're either stunned or you get really pissed or it jerks tears out of you because the SCENE IS JUST TOO FREAKING GORGEOUS。I'm sure some of you know what I mean。 Yennifer and Ciri? As a mirror to a certain queen? OMG that just cut through all my defenses。 And then the hits just kept coming and coming。And coming。Yes, this series has a hard world to live in。 It's not just hard for the elves, but it's hard for women。 But damn, if there aren't a lot of hard women in here hitting back! The love story。 I'm sorry, but I started blubbering like a little baby。 I thought it was great in The Last Wish, but this just made me an ugly little mess。I can't not give a book that affects me the way anything less than a full five stars。 It not only holds up well against all these modern epic fantasies, but I see precisely where it blows the previous generation of fantasies out of the water, ushering in everything we now know and love。 :) 。。。more

This was an excellent read! I really enjoyed going through it and unravelling all the mysteries and storylines。I really like how the different stories are woven in together until they all eventually come together at the end, even the chapters from unknown characters that are only here briefly are rather engaging and interesting to go through。Overall this was a delight to go through and I can't wait to read more! More like 3。5 than 4 stars, but I'll give it the benefit。 I really like Sapkowski's writing style, and the translation is clearly really good (even though I don't read the original language)。 As with the previous books, the world building is excellent, and the characters actions and interactions are thoroughly believable。 On a narrative level the book is a bit of a mess, but it worked for me anyway。 There's too much sudden jumping around between the various threads, and the story switches jarrin More like 3。5 than 4 stars, but I'll give it the benefit。 I really like Sapkowski's writing style, and the translation is clearly really good (even though I don't read the original language)。 As with the previous books, the world building is excellent, and the characters actions and interactions are thoroughly believable。 On a narrative level the book is a bit of a mess, but it worked for me anyway。 There's too much sudden jumping around between the various threads, and the story switches jarringly between high level political intrigue and the immediate situations of the main characters。 The latter worked for me much better than the former。 I liked his technique of cutting between a character relating a past event and the event itself。 However the cuts are abrupt, just the next paragraph。 This might be a formatting error but it was the same in the previous book。 Overall I'm enjoying the series, but I prefer the Witcher's exploits to the higher level political intrigue。 There's just too much of it and it dilutes the story of the Witcher。 。。。more

Aside from a pretty bad instance of deus ex machina, ToC is another entry in a rather fun fantasy series。 Before this book, I've blatantly hated Yennefer, but this installation warmed me to her just a tad bit。 For the first time, Geralt is not the only main character; Yennefer, Ciri, and others have always been major secondary characters, but Geralt always the focus。 Now, I can honestly say that Ciri is just as important to the narrative as Geralt, and I'm enjoying that。 Aside from a pretty bad instance of deus ex machina, ToC is another entry in a rather fun fantasy series。 Before this book, I've blatantly hated Yennefer, but this installation warmed me to her just a tad bit。 For the first time, Geralt is not the only main character; Yennefer, Ciri, and others have always been major secondary characters, but Geralt always the focus。 Now, I can honestly say that Ciri is just as important to the narrative as Geralt, and I'm enjoying that。 。。。more

Weird, scattered story-tellingI don't know what happened but this series really fell apart for me with The Time of Contempt The first half has pacing problems and slogged quite a bit。 This isn't a huge problem on it's own。 I've appreciated Sapkowski's ability to provide story telling in a disjointed way with multiple POVs but for some reason it didn't work here。 We get constant cut away scenes to different characters, often entirely new to the story and then dropped thereafter。 This became very Weird, scattered story-tellingI don't know what happened but this series really fell apart for me with The Time of Contempt The first half has pacing problems and slogged quite a bit。 This isn't a huge problem on it's own。 I've appreciated Sapkowski's ability to provide story telling in a disjointed way with multiple POVs but for some reason it didn't work here。 We get constant cut away scenes to different characters, often entirely new to the story and then dropped thereafter。 This became very frustrating because the plot is both overly simply and devilishly complicated。 I'll explain。 The thrust of every Witcher book thus far seems to be a romance between Geralt and Yennefer and some sort of prophecy story about the young sorceress, Ciri。 While I enjoy the romance, quite frankly this is getting kind of old now that I've finished the fourth book in the series。 And is Ciri going to have some development sometime soon or will I be dealing with a pre-teen for another four books? Getting lost in a desert and being raped doesn't count as development。 Also the women in this book。。。 come on。 Terribly written。 We could argue that the story is picking up with war brewing between humans and elves and sorceresses but wow it is so incredibly complicated and told in such an oblique and opaque way that I can hardly follow the politics。 This is the problem with the disjointed story-telling, it disengages me almost completely。 I don't know why I should care and the stakes don't matter to me。 I don't really care about Nilfgaard and all the other kingdoms, they seem tangential so why should I pay attention? If we had a stronger narrative voice or consistency with the POVs, I would begin to understand the world better and care more。 Also the prose in this installment? Pretty sub par。 I don't know what to say, I really didn't enjoy this book。 I may not be reading on in this series。 。。。more

This book really elevated the Witcher series for me。 I thoroughly enjoyed it and seriously was biting my nails in nervousness at times at what was happening to the characters。 This book started to take on a darker tone for sure as opposed to the more light hearted short stories of the first few books but I enjoyed the growth of the story and the characters experiences

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The Witcher novels and short stories are an interesting thing。 The English translations come from the Polish originals, and I think there's a cultural loss that doesn't translate into "American" ideas of what a fantasy book is。 Every chapter is essentially a short story and meanders, introducing new characters who sometimes get killed or are never seen from again。It's。。。an interesting choice and makes for a steep learning curve。 And it honestly makes only about 75% of the story worth paying atte The Witcher novels and short stories are an interesting thing。 The English translations come from the Polish originals, and I think there's a cultural loss that doesn't translate into "American" ideas of what a fantasy book is。 Every chapter is essentially a short story and meanders, introducing new characters who sometimes get killed or are never seen from again。It's。。。an interesting choice and makes for a steep learning curve。 And it honestly makes only about 75% of the story worth paying attention to。 I listened to the audio books and found myself checking out for a few minutes at a time, and then still not a whole lot had changed。That being said, the story gets moving in this one。 Outright war by Nilfgaard, wizards fighting amongst themselves, Geralt getting wounded, Ciri getting separated, Yennefer being。。。somewhere? It all goes to hell in this, and when all that happens it's a really good, fast paced, tense read。I'm invested in these characters and world, but it is an uphill battle sometimes to slog through。 Don't expect action, monsters, and a fast pace if you're coming into this fresh off the Netflix show。 It's good when it's good!
