Story was what I would expect from the series。 A little over the top with the adult fun times

Hmmm, I am not sure what to think of this one。 It was good no doubt, but something just didn't sit right with me。 The beginning was very slow, the middle was great and the ending was very tense。。。 though at the same time it constituted of Kovacs alternating between being saved/betrayed/captured with little agency of his own。 The multiple levels of plots were interesting for sure, but maybe because of this I felt some characters were painfully underutilized。 It is a good conclusion to the Kovacs Hmmm, I am not sure what to think of this one。 It was good no doubt, but something just didn't sit right with me。 The beginning was very slow, the middle was great and the ending was very tense。。。 though at the same time it constituted of Kovacs alternating between being saved/betrayed/captured with little agency of his own。 The multiple levels of plots were interesting for sure, but maybe because of this I felt some characters were painfully underutilized。 It is a good conclusion to the Kovacs trilogy, ending on a surprisingly happy note, though I for one would like to see more stories as the aftermath sets up such great possibilities! Speaking of changes in the setting, I love how the technology in Kovacs's world is constantly changing and the setting isn't static。 All in all, I was very happy to have read the trilogy and am eager to read more from Richard Morgan。 。。。more

I wish this book would have spent more time on the DeComs and the mimints。 It was fine overall, not great。 It lost the wonder and discovery of the last book and didn't have the interesting mystery of the first either。 I wish this book would have spent more time on the DeComs and the mimints。 It was fine overall, not great。 It lost the wonder and discovery of the last book and didn't have the interesting mystery of the first either。 。。。more

This is complex world with so much going on that and yet the books are quite enjoyable。

I think this was my least favorite of the trilogy, but book 2 wasn't anything great either。 I can see so much promise with the series, if just feels like it did not come together。。。 I think this was my least favorite of the trilogy, but book 2 wasn't anything great either。 I can see so much promise with the series, if just feels like it did not come together。。。 。。。more

The final book in the Takeshi Kovacs series and I am glad that it's over。 I really like Kovacs as a character and feel like he has so much potential but he just didn't get there。 The plotlines of this book were pretty boring, there was not a lot of action and very little actual story。 Kovacs just runs around and talks to people, so boring。 I did like the twist of having young Kovacs hunt down the old Kovacs, but again it wasn't executed that well。 The other characters were pretty generic and I w The final book in the Takeshi Kovacs series and I am glad that it's over。 I really like Kovacs as a character and feel like he has so much potential but he just didn't get there。 The plotlines of this book were pretty boring, there was not a lot of action and very little actual story。 Kovacs just runs around and talks to people, so boring。 I did like the twist of having young Kovacs hunt down the old Kovacs, but again it wasn't executed that well。 The other characters were pretty generic and I wasn't all that interested in them, which was also disappointing because I was looking forward to seeing Virginia Vidaura, who wasn't as cool as Kovacs makes her out to be in previous books。 Overall, a pretty boring last book in the series where nothing really happens and nothing gets wrapped up in Kovacs' world。 2 out of 5 stars。 I would recommend only reading Altered Carbon in this series as the other two books are pretty disappointing。 。。。more

The most disappointing out of the trilogy。 Honestly, I forced myself to get through this book just because I wanted to finish the series。 Altered Carbon was by far the best story (IMO), following closely by Broken Angels。 Not the worst I've read this year, but definitely nowhere near the best。 The most disappointing out of the trilogy。 Honestly, I forced myself to get through this book just because I wanted to finish the series。 Altered Carbon was by far the best story (IMO), following closely by Broken Angels。 Not the worst I've read this year, but definitely nowhere near the best。 。。。more

A mess of a book that, in addition to being just sort of vaguely disinteresting also contained a pile of weird sex stuff and awkward political/religious rhetoric that definitely read as less of a plot point and more of an author-inserted opinion。The first books were fairly interesting sci-fi stories where I was able to roll my eyes and deal with the "suave super-soldier who is good at everything and everyone wants to fuck" character, but I guess I'd just lost patience with it by this final entry A mess of a book that, in addition to being just sort of vaguely disinteresting also contained a pile of weird sex stuff and awkward political/religious rhetoric that definitely read as less of a plot point and more of an author-inserted opinion。The first books were fairly interesting sci-fi stories where I was able to roll my eyes and deal with the "suave super-soldier who is good at everything and everyone wants to fuck" character, but I guess I'd just lost patience with it by this final entry, and the story wasn't good enough to pave over those gaps for me。I think my recommendation would be to read Altered Carbon (book one), maybe, and then stop。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book。

This was a more interesting space sci-fi warrior story than the second one in this Altered Carbon series。 However, it was not compelling and was slowed a bit by odd language and random unexplained characters popping out of the past。 I hear the Netflix series takes a quite different approach to these characters。

Deborah

This was LONG, sexually graphic and battle hardened。 It kinda steered away from the sci-fi to the moralistic, but that is not uncommon。 I think it could have been a bit shorter, but I still listened to all 20 hours because, well, whats that you do。 There were twists and turns, fights, stacks removed - all that。

Apparently I’ve now finished a trilogy, rather than what should’ve been a much longer series。 It’s a shame- the worldbuilding is compelling, with plenty left to explore in many different facets。I suppose that’s my main problem with these books- they’re like a loosely-connected trio of dime novels, each sharing a basic background but very different in theme and approach。 I don’t mind the change in theme; I respect an author interested in exploring different aspects and nuance of his world’s (worl Apparently I’ve now finished a trilogy, rather than what should’ve been a much longer series。 It’s a shame- the worldbuilding is compelling, with plenty left to explore in many different facets。I suppose that’s my main problem with these books- they’re like a loosely-connected trio of dime novels, each sharing a basic background but very different in theme and approach。 I don’t mind the change in theme; I respect an author interested in exploring different aspects and nuance of his world’s (worlds’) politics, psychology, and philosophies, but would’ve greatly preferred deeper dives, followups, and tie-ins to subjects explored in the previous books, and a slower。。。 I don’t know, change in the main character’s behaviors, which felt tenuously connected to his personality at times。There’s also the dubious, and sketchily juvenile-male-fantasy sexuality of the series, which worsens in the final book- even for a jaded, shades-of-grey, traumatized antihero, it’s pretty wild to go from murdering dozens of people for how their religious sect treats their women to performing sexual assault and back again。 Rage against that patriarchy, buddy。 Regardless, Morgan paces well, uses metaphor wonderfully, seeds his twists and reveals expertly (though I’m unsure how I feel about his habit of revisiting those seeds by having Takeshi put them together in montage fashion as he figures something out) and generally tells a good story。 I suppose it should be taken as a compliment that with this trilogy, he has left me wanting and expecting more。 。。。more

Anticipation Of A New Book's Arrival, The

I've really struggled to put my thoughts down about Woken Furies without writing a ranty essay - as that's not really why I'm here。 There are quite a few reviews whose in-depth analyses far more succinctly cover the points I want to make, so I’m going to try and keep my thoughts as brief and to the point as possible:Pros:It's clear from reading the trilogy that Morgan is a very talented and imaginative writer。 The prose - particularly the world building - is evocative throughout, with some engag I've really struggled to put my thoughts down about Woken Furies without writing a ranty essay - as that's not really why I'm here。 There are quite a few reviews whose in-depth analyses far more succinctly cover the points I want to make, so I’m going to try and keep my thoughts as brief and to the point as possible:Pros:It's clear from reading the trilogy that Morgan is a very talented and imaginative writer。 The prose - particularly the world building - is evocative throughout, with some engaging storytelling, and very cleverly conceived science fiction elements。 In these respects, I've enjoyed reading his work - especially Altered Carbon - and the first act or so of Furies (deCom and the mimints) was probably the best part of the book for me。 I also enjoyed the later depictions of Martian technology and the alien remnants - more so than I did in Broken Angels, which came too late in the book for me to fully appreciate after the gathering fatigue of much less enjoyable middle chapters。 Cons:Unfortunately, Morgan - to use a colloquialism which seems apt - frequently and quite comprehensively shits the bed when it comes to the often bizarrely placed, and excruciatingly pornographic sex scenes he chooses to inject into his writing。 My general experience with them is that they detract more than they add to the story, and after the first two books I found myself bracing for the scenes to inevitably pop up in Furies。 Intentionally or otherwise, the issue of sexual consent (amongst other feminist themes - which are more or less shown the typewriter and then escorted out of the room without further comment) was also raised and then poorly addressed, which I found extremely off-putting。 Perhaps because of the first person narrative, I've also really struggled to separate the author's 'voice' from that of Kovacs, and the heavy sexual objectification of women and general misogynistic tone throughout has made it difficult to remain objective about these aspects of the writing。 I'm not sure how much of it I can safely chalk up to bad writing and lazy exploration of themes, as opposed to the deeply held and problematic views of the author coming out。As a character, Kovacs seems to have lost a lot of what made him an interesting protagonist in the prior instalments of the trilogy。 In comparison to similar characters from other books (such as Amos Burton), there's a marked absence of anything likeable or redeemable about his actions or outlook in Furies - which made him feel quite one-dimensional and stereotypical in places。 There was a lot of inner dialogue throughout the book where Kovacs appeared to argue with himself, and I kept expecting this to be a twist - perhaps a manifestation of the re-sleeving psychosis hinted at in earlier books - which might explain the change in mood, but Morgan never explored it or examined any other reason for Kovacs coming across in Furies as merely a whiny, self-loathing arsehole。 This was something of a disappointment for me as the book did seem to end on a reasonably positive/hopeful note。For my part, I’m probably being quite charitable by giving it two stars, and I can’t really recommend it - even if you enjoyed the other books in the trilogy。 。。。more

Bit surprised how low the ratings were for this one。 I thoroughly disagree with other reviewers that this was the low point in the series; to the contrary, it was as good as Broken Angels。 A worthy end to the trilogy。 You get the same Morgan-style plot delivery, and the solution to the mystery at the end was quite unexpected, but satisfying。 To be fair, there's a lot of traveling, a lot more characters, than previous installments, but you get the same Takeshi Kovacs as before。 Likewise, I felt K Bit surprised how low the ratings were for this one。 I thoroughly disagree with other reviewers that this was the low point in the series; to the contrary, it was as good as Broken Angels。 A worthy end to the trilogy。 You get the same Morgan-style plot delivery, and the solution to the mystery at the end was quite unexpected, but satisfying。 To be fair, there's a lot of traveling, a lot more characters, than previous installments, but you get the same Takeshi Kovacs as before。 Likewise, I felt Kovacs' character had a satisfying close as he came full-circle, and the series went deeper in Quellcrist Falconer and the revolution。 Highly recommend it。 。。。more

This series unfortunately got worse and worse as it went on。 It started so very strong and even until the third and final book it kept introducing very interesting plot lines。 Those plots unfortunately never got touched and were often like foreplay without the good stuff。 I really hoped they'd remedy that in the show, and to a degree it felt like they were going to head in that direction, but alas it was canceled before that could be seen。 All in all this series was at best ok。 The action was go This series unfortunately got worse and worse as it went on。 It started so very strong and even until the third and final book it kept introducing very interesting plot lines。 Those plots unfortunately never got touched and were often like foreplay without the good stuff。 I really hoped they'd remedy that in the show, and to a degree it felt like they were going to head in that direction, but alas it was canceled before that could be seen。 All in all this series was at best ok。 The action was good。 Build up was good。 But delivering on the world (universe) at large he was building was poorly handled。 。。。more

The story is great, as expected。 The subject matter is complex and intertwined, as well as thought provoking。 The problem lies in the telling。 Somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 of the way in you really start to feel how Takeshi's actions aren't adding up, and feel off。 Now the subject matter, and resulting psychological and emotional actions, are ridiculously hard to express in real life。 That means they are at least three times harder to express through a story character。 So kudos for making it wor The story is great, as expected。 The subject matter is complex and intertwined, as well as thought provoking。 The problem lies in the telling。 Somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 of the way in you really start to feel how Takeshi's actions aren't adding up, and feel off。 Now the subject matter, and resulting psychological and emotional actions, are ridiculously hard to express in real life。 That means they are at least three times harder to express through a story character。 So kudos for making it work at all, but the whole middle comes out a bit convoluted, with uncharacteristic behavior that isn't really explained to the reader。 Both of which pull you out of the story regularly。 The author brings it all around in a familiar Takeshi Kovacs Series way, but for many it might be too late, and hard to accept after so much seemingly unKovacs behavior。 I still appreciate what he was going for, but it feels maybe deadline rushed, more bitten off than could be chewed, or simply trying too hard to wrap up a series。 。。。more

"Only when I'm killing them"Reading the Kovacs trilogy back to back, though the stories are separated by decades or centuries and occurs literally in multiple solar systems, I was reminded of George Costanza。 Even if the episode somehow ended with him on ascendancy, it will be forgotten by the next。 We needed his character to be in misery。 Kovacs runs the same loop。 His bounties and friends disappear, back on a different surface killing for different people with indifference to both。 Woken Furie "Only when I'm killing them"Reading the Kovacs trilogy back to back, though the stories are separated by decades or centuries and occurs literally in multiple solar systems, I was reminded of George Costanza。 Even if the episode somehow ended with him on ascendancy, it will be forgotten by the next。 We needed his character to be in misery。 Kovacs runs the same loop。 His bounties and friends disappear, back on a different surface killing for different people with indifference to both。 Woken Furies has a strong premise that takes advantage of unique scenarios made possible by cortical stacks and sleeves。 Populated by characters with impressive external design and forceful personality。 Also, their alterations have effects on their psyche。 Martians also make a presence here though only orbital。 Liked the locales we get to visit as well。 As a movie it’d be a globe trotter, though a very different globe than earth。 I’m kinda sure that’s exactly what Morgan had in mind。 He was visualizing a movie, then writing it down。 To an extent that it suffers the change in medium。 He repeatedly takes long paragraphs to properly describe the set design and parameters。 Often hindering the momentum of the plot and breaking up tension。 The story also stops and starts multiple times, new set of protagonists introduced in the middle of the book。 He probably could’ve used a movie technique here, cross cutting both timelines。 Risky, but it’d mean the book would be harder to put down。 Which is the primary fault of this novel。 I found it too easy to put down and not return to。 Like the first episode of The Wire。 Hiding Kovacs motivation only made him more similar to Constanza and made me less interested to his latest killing spree。 The world building is again great here。 It’s a interesting world in a interesting time and the technological advances do provide new perks and new hurdles。 The class divide is more prominent here, and more pivotal。 Evil has taken every oppressive form it can, as capitalism, as religion and masses have become submissive to both。 Kovacs is the kind of protagonist that fits this world, his detachment makes sense when every attachment hurts。 Still, I hope Kovacs breaks the mold in his next outing, otherwise I might not follow him to these alien worlds with ghosts of Martians’ past。 。。。more
