Summary

Fifty years after the events of ALTERED CARBON, Takeshi Kovacs is serving as a mercenary in the Procterate-sponsored war to put down Joshuah Kemp's revolution on the planet Sanction IV。 He is offered the chance to join a covert team chasing a prize whose value is limitless -- and whose dangers are endless。 Here is a novel that takes mankind to the brink。

A breakneck-paced crime thriller, ALTERED CARBON took its readers deep into the universe Morgan had so compellingly realised without ever letting them escape the onward rush of the plot。 BROKEN ANGELS melds SF, the war novel and the spy thriller to take the reader below the surface of this future and lay bare the treacheries, betrayals and follies that leave man so ill-prepared for the legacy he has been given: the stars。 This is SF at its dizzying best: superb, yet subtle, world-building; strong yet sensitive characterisation; awesome yet believable technology, thilling yet profound writing。 Richard Morgan is set to join the genre's world-wide elite。

Very different from the first in the setting but I loved it。

I actually liked this one more than the 1st one。 It was definitely more sci-fi。

Wasn't that good as Altered Carbon but still nice。 I particularly don't like descriptions of cruelty in the books so I gave 4 stars (instead of 5)。 Wasn't that good as Altered Carbon but still nice。 I particularly don't like descriptions of cruelty in the books so I gave 4 stars (instead of 5)。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 I seem to be in the minority that thought this one was better than Altered Carbon。 It still had some problems though (the sex scenes are horrendous, Kovacs has too many things work out because Envoy training), but overall it was a more enjoyable experience for me。 Mostly I think I got more out of the plot this time around。 Hoping the final book in the trilogy is the best yet。

After reading Altered Carbon and seeing there were (at least 2) more Takeshi Kovacs books, I jumped in to read book 2。 I did not like it as well as Altered Carbon, but it was still an interesting read。

Hard, fast follow up to Altered Carbon。 Definitely the writing style that needs to be read in one sitting; I started this a while back and then picked it up again a few days ago。 I was lost for a while。 Love the exploitative sex that Morgan throws in his stories。 Excited for the last book in this series。

Carol

I thought that the storyline was kept a little too vague throughout。

I'm a bit disappointed after reading this one。 Although Altered Carbon has its flaws, it is a really enjoyable book。 In this case too often I've found myself either bored or weary while reading。 I think the biggest problem is the lack of interesting secondary characters - neither among Takeshi's companions nor among his enemies。 The plot is quite complicated at times and has a lot of loose threads and inconsequences。 Broken Angels has its moments, but I'm actually pretty happy I've finished my t I'm a bit disappointed after reading this one。 Although Altered Carbon has its flaws, it is a really enjoyable book。 In this case too often I've found myself either bored or weary while reading。 I think the biggest problem is the lack of interesting secondary characters - neither among Takeshi's companions nor among his enemies。 The plot is quite complicated at times and has a lot of loose threads and inconsequences。 Broken Angels has its moments, but I'm actually pretty happy I've finished my time with it。 。。。more

Although the second part of Takeshi Kovacs trilogy loosely follows the worldbuilding and the main character from the first part, they are nothing alike。 So if you are looking for a good sci-fi murder mystery, keep looking, because this is not the one。 Of course, there is nothing wrong with changing the narrative of the story to keep things fresh, but the book is objectively bad on so many levels, that I felt relieved when I finished reading it。 So let's go through some things that bugged me the Although the second part of Takeshi Kovacs trilogy loosely follows the worldbuilding and the main character from the first part, they are nothing alike。 So if you are looking for a good sci-fi murder mystery, keep looking, because this is not the one。 Of course, there is nothing wrong with changing the narrative of the story to keep things fresh, but the book is objectively bad on so many levels, that I felt relieved when I finished reading it。 So let's go through some things that bugged me the most。 There are going to be a couple of minor spoilers ahead, so beware。We can start with our main protagonist himself and his motivation。 In the previous book, Takeshi was kinda trapped in a situation where he had the choice between the potentially centuries-long prison sentence and getting a new sleeve and a bit of cash to go with it if he can find out who killed his client。 So the choice and motivation were very clearly defined and were easy to follow。 In this one *spoiler* he is tired of fighting a war, so he decides to defect when the slightest opportunity to earn a profit presents itself。 This means that he is purely motivated by money and his own ego。 Which doesn't really sound that bad, it's potentially interesting to have an anti-hero, but there are so many other things that make Kovacs just utterly repulsing。 One of which is unnecessary machismo and self-verification that he does to himself on almost every page, which gets tiring very fast。 Oh yeah, and for some reason, sometimes, he snarls like a wolf (why???)。The other cringe-inducing thing was the sex scenes, which felt like some cheap fan fiction piece of writing and a competition to find as many synonyms to male and female genitalia。 Luckily enough, these scenes, as a lot of other things in this book add completely zero value to the plot, so they can be skipped to preserve your mood and sanity。The last bit to add here is the style of writing itself。 Throughout the book, the transitions feel very patchy and out of place, which meant that I had to go back and re-read some of the parts just to understand what had just happened, especially during the action scenes。All in all, if this book could be revised and slightly adapted, it could have been a decent continuation to the first part。 But it isn't, so read it at your own discretion。 。。。more

This Takeshi book is vastly different from Altered Carbon。 This book was way more sci-fi and not any mystery at all。 It's not bad, just really different from the first book。 I still like Kovacs as a character and it was interesting to read about him in a soldierly role instead of as a detective。 The other characters weren't that interesting and I didn't feel attached to any of them。 I spent a good chunk of the middle of the book waiting for something to happen。 There was a lot of Kovacs and frie This Takeshi book is vastly different from Altered Carbon。 This book was way more sci-fi and not any mystery at all。 It's not bad, just really different from the first book。 I still like Kovacs as a character and it was interesting to read about him in a soldierly role instead of as a detective。 The other characters weren't that interesting and I didn't feel attached to any of them。 I spent a good chunk of the middle of the book waiting for something to happen。 There was a lot of Kovacs and friends just waiting around and not doing much。 The end was exciting and there was lots of action。 I liked that we got to see more about Martians that were just vaguely mentioned in the first book。 3 out of 5 stars。 。。。more

Very different from the first book- less a murder mystery than pure SF with a great expansion on the world-building。 Morgan builds tension very well, and his casual and often subtle use of metaphor provides excellent visualization of specifics, though at times I found that broader scopes left me grasping for placement and understanding。

This was an excellent read, while still in the same world as the first novel it manages to be a completely different type of book and coincidentally on another planet。 While you're getting alot of the elements that made the fist novel so great this story took a little longer for me to get in to, and unfortunately it read a bit like a standalone, however apart from those few minor details you've got all the intrigue, guns, tech, sex, aliens, war and death to keep you guessing till the end。 This was an excellent read, while still in the same world as the first novel it manages to be a completely different type of book and coincidentally on another planet。 While you're getting alot of the elements that made the fist novel so great this story took a little longer for me to get in to, and unfortunately it read a bit like a standalone, however apart from those few minor details you've got all the intrigue, guns, tech, sex, aliens, war and death to keep you guessing till the end。 。。。more

If you saw the Netflix series or read the first Takeshi Kovacs novel you will probably enjoy this one as well。 Richard Morgan does a great job of universe building in our very own future, when consciousnesses can be downloaded from one body (or sleeve) to another。 Technology has moved way forward, thanks in part to discoveries of Martian tech, but human foibles and desires have remained about the same。 Interesting to see what cultures and myths have made it to the future。 Not for the squeamish。

Well, this book was a very strange read to me。 I didn't expect it to be anything like Digital Carbon, so I wasn't disappointed by that。 The premise of the story is ok, so I guess that kept me reading。 But it was。。。 Strange。 I'm pretty sure that the author had to write a minimum number of pages/words set by his publisher。 There no other explanation for so many "fillers"。 The story took way to long to develop and it was packed with a lot of action sequences that I didn't really care for。 I fail to Well, this book was a very strange read to me。 I didn't expect it to be anything like Digital Carbon, so I wasn't disappointed by that。 The premise of the story is ok, so I guess that kept me reading。 But it was。。。 Strange。 I'm pretty sure that the author had to write a minimum number of pages/words set by his publisher。 There no other explanation for so many "fillers"。 The story took way to long to develop and it was packed with a lot of action sequences that I didn't really care for。 I fail to see why should I care for someone when they can be resurrected in a new sleeve - and we all know that main character can't really die cause he's the one telling the story。 Even though, I think the book is ok。 Read worse, but far better as well。 3 stars leaning towards 2。I will take my time before I start with the third book in the series。 。。。more

It's interesting when the writer doesn't use the central premise of their world as extensively as would be possible。 The most glaring example in this trilogy is transgender sleeving。 There's a tease of that at the end of this one but it's just like。。。 not there in his brain, and it looks like now, past the tipping point, he still has some kind of bizarre Marxian transphobia thing? Beyond disappointing。Anyway, the other way this occurs to me is in simulation nesting。 Since it seems that it's poss It's interesting when the writer doesn't use the central premise of their world as extensively as would be possible。 The most glaring example in this trilogy is transgender sleeving。 There's a tease of that at the end of this one but it's just like。。。 not there in his brain, and it looks like now, past the tipping point, he still has some kind of bizarre Marxian transphobia thing? Beyond disappointing。Anyway, the other way this occurs to me is in simulation nesting。 Since it seems that it's possible in this universe to have almost perfect simulation of a body, it's surprising that wars are still fought in seemingly one level of reality。 I'm hoping it moves beyond that in the third book。 But it's just another way that this book is particularly connected to its time and the standards of imperialist wars, set by the 20th century and perpetuated into the 21st。 Suffering and slaughter that isn't even cutting edge unless the corps want them to be, and there's often no reason they do。Also hoping there was some kind of mass uploading by Martians or other aliens? Was definitely sort of surprised the full implications of that aren't realized either。 。。。more

Not as strong as the first instalment, Altered Carbon, but also it is a VERY different book。 Altered Carbon is a hard boiled Blade Runner-esque cyberpunk detective novel, while Broken Angels is a military science fiction novel。 Broken Angels more than ever puts emphasis on action scenes and crazy technology which it delivers like a boss, but not much else of literary value。 The only common theme between this and the first book is the total disregard people have for their bodies, and in contrast Not as strong as the first instalment, Altered Carbon, but also it is a VERY different book。 Altered Carbon is a hard boiled Blade Runner-esque cyberpunk detective novel, while Broken Angels is a military science fiction novel。 Broken Angels more than ever puts emphasis on action scenes and crazy technology which it delivers like a boss, but not much else of literary value。 The only common theme between this and the first book is the total disregard people have for their bodies, and in contrast in Broken Angels, their souls as well。 The other common thing is the protagonist, Takeshi Kovacs, but he does not have much of a personality anyway and the book lacks back-references to the events of Altered Carbon。 Even though intended as a series, all 3 books can be read as stand-alone。 Not a masterpiece, but an enjoyable read none the less。 。。。more

Decades after the events of Altered Carbon, Takeshi Kovacs continues life as a killer for hire。 Where he played the role of a detective in Altered Carbon, Kovacs is more of a soldier in this one。 While events are mentioned in passing, Broken Angels can be read without Altered Carbon。 For those who watched the Netflix show, this book is thankfully nothing like season 2。War rages on the world of Sanction IV between a corporate backed government and revolutionaries/terrorists, and Kovacs starts off Decades after the events of Altered Carbon, Takeshi Kovacs continues life as a killer for hire。 Where he played the role of a detective in Altered Carbon, Kovacs is more of a soldier in this one。 While events are mentioned in passing, Broken Angels can be read without Altered Carbon。 For those who watched the Netflix show, this book is thankfully nothing like season 2。War rages on the world of Sanction IV between a corporate backed government and revolutionaries/terrorists, and Kovacs starts off having been almost killed in the fighting。 Fellow soldier Schneider talks to him about an archaeological find that would make them wealthy enough to retire from soldiering。 Broken Angels leaves behind the noir feel of its predecessor, replacing it with suspense, action, and Martians。 A bit of horror gets in there too。 For fans of the the mystery approach, a small one is on-going through the second half of the book, and completely changed my view of one character when Takeshi confronts the culprit at the end。 Takeshi's cynicism stands out more this time around, likely as a result of the war going on around him。 While the tone is darker overall, there is more levity in the banter between Kovacs and his companions。 Still, I think the noir of Altered Carbon fit the character better。The worldbuilding is expanded here, and we learn that some of humanity's advancements come from a lost Martian people。 Not a new concept in sci-fi, but putting it in the conflict between corporate fatcats who only see a way to advance their status vs。 self-righteous revolutionaries who giggle at the thought of using the alien weapons to kill people was a nice touch。Overall, I think I preferred Altered Carbon, but Broken Angels was a decent read。 。。。more

Anticipation Of A New Book's Arrival, The

I didn't enjoy Broken Angels nearly as much as I did Altered Carbon; and if I'm being perfectly honest there were times when I found it hard work to maintain interest in the story。Where Takeshi Kovacs' first outing was a straight up hard-boiled cyberpunk noir detective thriller set against the backdrop of the future decaying cradle of humanity, this book takes the action to a far flung colony of the human race。 In the opening chapters it's pitched as a Flashman-Papers-esque treasure hunt against I didn't enjoy Broken Angels nearly as much as I did Altered Carbon; and if I'm being perfectly honest there were times when I found it hard work to maintain interest in the story。Where Takeshi Kovacs' first outing was a straight up hard-boiled cyberpunk noir detective thriller set against the backdrop of the future decaying cradle of humanity, this book takes the action to a far flung colony of the human race。 In the opening chapters it's pitched as a Flashman-Papers-esque treasure hunt against the backdrop of a planetary war (in which our man is an erstwhile mercenary participant) but quickly descends into another whodunnit which, when you cut it right back, follows the same basic formula as the plot of the first book。 Speaking of similarities, there appears to be the exact same number of cloyingly pornographic sex scenes into this book as the last。 In fairness, they managed to serve as a vehicle for certain developments in the story (even if it was iffy in places, especially one uncomfortable reference to PTSD) rather than just being there, a la Netflix and HBO, for the sake of it。 But I can't help but wonder if the author was fulfilling some contractual obligation in regards the number and level of gratuity。Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it was a reasonably good read which puts more flesh on the bones of Takeshi Kovacs' character as well as the world he inhabits。 The depictions of the Martian civilisation are especially imaginative, although not at all my cup of tea, but there's a whole lengthy undercurrent of commentary on the horrors of war (especially ones waged privately for the sake of corporate greed and political expedience) which is always of relevance in our troubled times。 Probably worth a go if you liked the first one, but it'll be a while for me before I can muster enough interest in finishing reading the series。 。。。more

While I liked it, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the original。 It was much more nihilist, without the expansive exploration I've enjoyed elsewhere。 Decent writing and storyline, but did not capture the imagination as much as the first novel。 Even though there are some new areas created and explored, they felt too much like a by-product。 While I liked it, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the original。 It was much more nihilist, without the expansive exploration I've enjoyed elsewhere。 Decent writing and storyline, but did not capture the imagination as much as the first novel。 Even though there are some new areas created and explored, they felt too much like a by-product。 。。。more

This is book 2 of the Takeshi Kovacs story that happens 30 years after the first book。 It follows Kovacs as a Wedge soldier fighting on Sanction IV where he then gets pulled into an archaeology discovery "mystery"。 It has action, military sci-fi elements, and some good discussions on religion and war。 However, the plot leaves a lot to be desired。 I did not like it as much as the first book。, although, I did not really love the first book。 This book was okay, nothing outstanding or mind-blowing。 This is book 2 of the Takeshi Kovacs story that happens 30 years after the first book。 It follows Kovacs as a Wedge soldier fighting on Sanction IV where he then gets pulled into an archaeology discovery "mystery"。 It has action, military sci-fi elements, and some good discussions on religion and war。 However, the plot leaves a lot to be desired。 I did not like it as much as the first book。, although, I did not really love the first book。 This book was okay, nothing outstanding or mind-blowing。 。。。more
