Summary

Lara's had eyes for exactly one person throughout her three years of high school: Chase Harding。 He's tall, strong, sweet, a football star, and frankly, stupid hot。 Oh, and he's talking to her now。 On purpose and everything。 Maybe。。。flirting, even? No, wait, he's definitely flirting, which is pretty much the sum of everything Lara's wanted out of life。

Except she’s haunted by a memory。 A memory of a confusing, romantic, strangely perfect summer spent with a girl named Jasmine。 A memory that becomes a confusing, disorienting present when Jasmine herself walks through the front doors of the school to see Lara and Chase chatting it up in front of the lockers。

Lara has everything she ever wanted: a tight-knit group of friends, a job that borders on cool, and Chase, the boy of her literal dreams。 But if she's finally got the guy, why can't she stop thinking about the girl?

Cool for the Summer is a story of self-discovery and new love。 It’s about the things we want and the things we need。 And it’s about the people who will let us be who we are。

I am so so glad I got to read this。 There are far too few love triangle stories where the MC has to pick between one girl and one guy。 This story is told between the past, during which Lara first met Jasmine over the summer holidays, and the present, where Lara comes to find Jasmine attending her school all of a sudden, at the same time as her long time crush Chase has finally appears to notice she exists。 Lara begins dating Chase because that's kind of what she feels she's expected to do, espec I am so so glad I got to read this。 There are far too few love triangle stories where the MC has to pick between one girl and one guy。 This story is told between the past, during which Lara first met Jasmine over the summer holidays, and the present, where Lara comes to find Jasmine attending her school all of a sudden, at the same time as her long time crush Chase has finally appears to notice she exists。 Lara begins dating Chase because that's kind of what she feels she's expected to do, especially after all the years that she's been talking about him to her best friends。 He is adorable。 It isn't even a choice between someone who isn't lovely and someone who treats Lara wonderfully。 There are no bad guys in this novel, and it is all up to Lara finding out about herself and learning how to communicate that to those important around her。 No homophobia to speak of, although Lara does worry about this。 All supporting characters are just lovely, adding to the overall good feel of this book。It's an adorable story of coming out and being confronted with exactly what you want exactly when you don't want it。 Add to that the misunderstandings that arise between Lara and Jasmine--largely because the two girls do not sit down and talk to each other and instead nurse their hurts--this is a really well paced and entertaining young adult novel。 。。。more

This book was adorable。When Lara starts her senior year she had no idea the girl she fell in love with over the summer would be walking through the door。 To make matters worse Chase, the boy she's been crushing on for years, is finally interested in her。 Lara's feelings have never been more confused than they are now。 She thought what was happening between her and Jasmine over the summer was more experimental but the more time they spent together the more she started questioning if she was actua This book was adorable。When Lara starts her senior year she had no idea the girl she fell in love with over the summer would be walking through the door。 To make matters worse Chase, the boy she's been crushing on for years, is finally interested in her。 Lara's feelings have never been more confused than they are now。 She thought what was happening between her and Jasmine over the summer was more experimental but the more time they spent together the more she started questioning if she was actually falling in love。 Chase has finally asked Lara out and she couldn't be more thrilled。 She's up for going all in with him as far as dating, making out, and going to prom together but even though she's happy he's finally seeing her she can't help but feel like something is missing。 I enjoyed Lara's journey to self discovery。 I liked the format between the past (her time with Jasmine over the summer) and the present (her conflict of feelings between being with Chase and seeing Jasmine again)。 I thought it was well done。 I liked Lara's friends at home and the one's she made over the summer as well。 If you're looking for a fluffy YA contemporary romance than I would definitely recommend this one。 I listened to the audiobook and I thought it was well done。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Really enjoyed this breezy extended summer romance, which hit a lot of my sweet spots: food, books, espresso, writing, graphic novels, women friendships, a girl-detective podcaster named Kiki。 It has a great mother-daughter relationship at the center with Larissa and her mom, and a good complicated love triangle while Larissa tries to figure out whether she wants to be with the guy of her dreams, or the girl she fell for over the summer, and all that entails。 For me, the book wasn't as strong wh Really enjoyed this breezy extended summer romance, which hit a lot of my sweet spots: food, books, espresso, writing, graphic novels, women friendships, a girl-detective podcaster named Kiki。 It has a great mother-daughter relationship at the center with Larissa and her mom, and a good complicated love triangle while Larissa tries to figure out whether she wants to be with the guy of her dreams, or the girl she fell for over the summer, and all that entails。 For me, the book wasn't as strong when it drew out the conflict, and when it portrayed Larissa's anxiety over being with a girl。 Like many books, the conflict would have been solved if only people had talked to each other, so rather than tension, that sometimes felt like a constructed complication rather than a natural one。 I didn't always understand Larissa's hesitation over being with a girl。 She had friends who were bi, gay, pan, and aroace, so it felt like her anxiety skewed to a standard she herself didnt view others with。 It complicated this by having her unsure of where her mom and friends stood on this, but there felt like there was a push/pull between the open-love world she lived in and the more judge-y one in her head。 But those questions aside, this was a fun, sweet read that had me rooting for the kids at the center of it to find and embrace their selves and the ones they love。 I really enjoyed it。 And I'd definitely be down for a sequel starring Kiki, who was my favorite friend! 。。。more

note that Demi Lovato now uses they/them pronouns, starting 8 days after this book’s publication, so there is some misgendering of the singer in the textAs a lost 20-something, it is always so heartwarming to read about teenagers finding themselves。Larissa “Lara” Bogdan (17, Russian, Jewish) has been loving the star quarterback Chase Harding for what seems like forever。 And then Chase starts liking her back。 Except now that Lara has a whole summer’s worth of memory with Jasmine Killary (17, bi, note that Demi Lovato now uses they/them pronouns, starting 8 days after this book’s publication, so there is some misgendering of the singer in the textAs a lost 20-something, it is always so heartwarming to read about teenagers finding themselves。Larissa “Lara” Bogdan (17, Russian, Jewish) has been loving the star quarterback Chase Harding for what seems like forever。 And then Chase starts liking her back。 Except now that Lara has a whole summer’s worth of memory with Jasmine Killary (17, bi, Jewish, Irish), and she isn’t sure what anything means anymore。I admit I didn’t think I’d enjoy this book so much。 There were a lot of partying, high school kids who can only think about hooking ups, flashbacks, and one HP reference (note: all HP references are edited out for the final copy as seen in Adler’s tweet) within the first few chapters。 In 2021。 That left a sour taste in my mouth that it took me another 10 days or so to pick it up again。 And I had fun with the rest of the book! The fact that Chase is a sweet guy and not some monster after Lara gets to know him makes Cool for the Summer more about Lara’s self discovery。 Her storyline with Jasmine is so cute and at times tugged at my heart。 It’s about these two wonderful love interests and what Lara really feels, and there is also a somewhat questionable friendship between Lara and her best friend。Ever got yourself tangled in a complicated romantic relationship in high school? Or hear about your friends trying to navigate their even more complicated college dating lives? Cool for the Summer is like that with mostly the fun scenes, little to no homophobia going on, and covers a cast of characters with various backgrounds。 Lara’s Russian roots and Jasmine’s Jewish ones play some part in the story, so that was nice to read about。I don’t have much to say about this book except that it is kind of messy and cute and fun。 If you don’t mind a lot of then and now scenes interspersed throughout the whole book, Cool for the Summer is an entertaining story about two queer disasters with good chemistry。content warnings: brief biphobia, mention of antisemitism, underage drinkingI received a digital review copy from Wednesday Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

It was hard to resist the adorable cover and the ode to Demi Lovato in the title, but for me that was where the adoration ended。 Cool for the Summer reads like a YA book written for adults, which lends to its clunkiness。 None of the characters feel very realistic and the whole story feels more like an observation of teenagers。 Like when adults talk about teenagers being like animals in the zoo—it felt like this was written by a jaded old zookeeper。

Disappointed I didn’t enjoy this more。 Sounded pretty good and the main character is also a Demi fan but ehhhhh。 Just felt no chemistry between any of the couples。 Bit of a boring read。 Should I have dnded? Yeah probably。。。

Not bad。 I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrator。 It reminded my of Grease and therefore of Only Mostly Devastated。 But while OMD was a little silly and a lot adorable, there was definitely more strain in this former summer romance。 It did have an adorable ending, which I'm a sucker for。However, I felt like the 3rd member of the triangle wasn't very well developed。 Therefore, I never rooted for him or saw him as any kind of threat。 So I was mostly annoyed that our girls couldn't jus Not bad。 I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrator。 It reminded my of Grease and therefore of Only Mostly Devastated。 But while OMD was a little silly and a lot adorable, there was definitely more strain in this former summer romance。 It did have an adorable ending, which I'm a sucker for。However, I felt like the 3rd member of the triangle wasn't very well developed。 Therefore, I never rooted for him or saw him as any kind of threat。 So I was mostly annoyed that our girls couldn't just be together like they so clearly wanted。 A good read, but not my cup of tea。 。。。more

“But just because you’re telling a good story doesn’t mean it’s the right story。 And I think it’s really important to tell the right story。“ Wow, I loved this book so much。 It isn’t perfect but it made me feel very seen。 What I liked: This felt very high school but in the absolute best way。 YA drama often annoys me but didn’t here because it’s realistic without being over-dramatic。 I definitely remember the type of all-consuming crushes you see here and woah did this take me back, lol。 The bisex “But just because you’re telling a good story doesn’t mean it’s the right story。 And I think it’s really important to tell the right story。“ Wow, I loved this book so much。 It isn’t perfect but it made me feel very seen。 What I liked: This felt very high school but in the absolute best way。 YA drama often annoys me but didn’t here because it’s realistic without being over-dramatic。 I definitely remember the type of all-consuming crushes you see here and woah did this take me back, lol。 The bisexual rep is so great and is why I loved this so much。 The questioning moments were very realistic for me。 I love getting a character that didn’t always just know they were bisexual but also didn’t have this groundbreaking moment of clarity in their life, because that was my experience as I went through my journey of discovery earlier this year。 Sometimes you just notice it’s there and always has been without a new relationship type moment - everyone’s path to self-discovery is so different - so having that show up in this book was meaningful to me。 I did not expect a scene with her mom toward the end to make me emotional but wow, did it ever。 What wasn’t for me: I don’t feel like you get to know Chase super well outside of football, despite him being a main character, though I also understand given the main character’s perspective and experience。 Others have mentioned that some of the diversity/ rep included here felt a little forced and I did find a couple descriptions a little under-developed in a way that felt kind of thrown in, so I understand where those reviewers are coming from - some side characters could have been either more fleshed out to feel a little less forced, or just not included。 I felt the other main characters were more well developed though。 Overall this book will stick with me for a long time and would recommend it for its bisexual rep especially and for fans of YA romance。 TW for biphobia and underage drinking。 。。。more

When I closed this book I immediately hugged it because that was the closest I could get to hugging the MC。 The teens in this book are pretty much exactly who I experienced being and going to high school with。 They are far from perfect, especially lacking in communication skills, preferring to be passive aggressive instead。 So…teenagers。 There is so much representation in the book that I don’t know where to begin! Quick shoutout to my friend Lee for not telling me this was bad and letting me buy it anyway!!Cool for the Summer is about a girl named Lara who is questioning her sexuality。 She finally has the boy of her dreams named Chase but she can't stop thinking about the perfect summer she spent with a girl。 When Jasmine shows up at her school, it throws everything into chaos as Lara can't decide who she wants。Some parts of this were good- Lara questioning her sexuality and who she was was relatable and Quick shoutout to my friend Lee for not telling me this was bad and letting me buy it anyway!!Cool for the Summer is about a girl named Lara who is questioning her sexuality。 She finally has the boy of her dreams named Chase but she can't stop thinking about the perfect summer she spent with a girl。 When Jasmine shows up at her school, it throws everything into chaos as Lara can't decide who she wants。Some parts of this were good- Lara questioning her sexuality and who she was was relatable and I felt for her utter confusion。 But then that is outweighed by the rest of the book being an absolute mess。 While I like Lara WAS a bisexual mess, this entire book is about her questioning if she was bi and at the end she's still like well idk。 ???? I understand labels are hard to pin down but the entire point of this book was bi rep and to just shit the bed and say jk she's not bi / doesn't like the label / doesn't even KNOW, why did we even bother? What was the point!!The author went out of her way to mention every race of every background character and it was so awkward because they weren't relevant at all。 There is a non-binary friend who is mentioned as the non-binary friend EVERY TIME they showed up and I don't think they even had a name??? It was so offensive。 All of the so called rep in this book was just shit all around, like the author was trying to hit a checklist of name dropping people and literally nothing else。I should have known going into this that they would mention Demi Lovato。 They are mentioned so much and for what oh my god I hate Demi Lovato shut up about them。 Cool for the summer isn't even a good song bye。I love the cover so much but I want to go back to B&N and get my money back because this sucked。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 I’ll be honest, I thought this was going to be at best a 3 star novel。 I love that it exists。 But the diversity checklist mentioned by other reviewers is just so clunky and off putting, and then even some of the primary characters were very underbaked。 But, I love that this book exists, and the resolutions to all the storylines were so great I rounded up。

This book was really cute, and I think it’s also so important。 It goes to show that just because you know other people who aren’t straight doesn’t mean you can easily recognize that in yourself。 Labels can be helpful, but they can also be constructing because of how fluid sexuality is。 This book will help so many young folks struggling with their identity and I love that。

There are things that I really like about this。 I think Adler captures the confusion of figuring out sexuality in a really relatable way, especially for the primary audience。 And I really liked how through Lara's summer and fall of self-discovery, she becomes more attractive to people around her。 But my favorite relationship that Lara had was her relationship with her mom, who she obviously depended on and loved and it really felt like a relationship where that love was returned in equal measure There are things that I really like about this。 I think Adler captures the confusion of figuring out sexuality in a really relatable way, especially for the primary audience。 And I really liked how through Lara's summer and fall of self-discovery, she becomes more attractive to people around her。 But my favorite relationship that Lara had was her relationship with her mom, who she obviously depended on and loved and it really felt like a relationship where that love was returned in equal measure。 SPOILERS AHEADI appreciated that Chase Harding only had one potential moment where he was a jerk and it was when he was hurting near the end of the book and even then, he redeemed himself a lot and seemed to understand that Lara's rejection wasn't about him which was really consistent with his personality throughout the book。 He's a good guy and more than that, he treated Lara well。 Jasmine's personality turn and, frankly, dishonesty when she comes to Stratford after a magical summer in the Outer Banks is not attractive and while I do understand Lara's not understanding what happened to the person she had probably fallen in love with, I do not understand why the author made Jasmine so unlikeable in the "now" parts of the book。 I was rooting for Jasmine until she started barging in on Lara's friends group while barely acknowledging Lara。 Her one desperate attempt to get Lara's attention (which she had all along) was something that had to be explained later and was right after Chase made Lara a part of his big day。 Sexual attraction is important, but so is how a person treats you。 It's not as though Lara's attraction to Chase has disappeared。 Meanwhile, Jasmine obviously talks behind Lara's back and laughs about Lara, a complete-180 from the accepting and kind person she had been over the summer。 I think it's so important to discuss sexuality in YA books but I think it's also important to model not accepting bad behavior from people, no matter how hurt or jealous they are。 I wish it had been more of an even playing field, I wish Jasmine had come in and really worked on the friendship with Lara so then it made more sense why Lara would pick her。 By the end of the book, I really, really didn't like Jasmine at all, no matter how much she helped Lara develop a personality independent of her friend group over the summer。 As a book, it was really easy to read and I did like all of the characters, except Stratford Jasmine。 I wish that the dynamic of Lara's core group of friends had been explored more since they were all unique and had their own dreams and paths ahead of them。 I wish the friendships with the Outer Banks group had been explored more for the same reasons。 It wasn't a bad book but it definitely left me wishing for a more satisfying ending and more character development beyond Lara。 。。。more

okay, little bit of a rocky start but it won me over in the end!this is a lighthearted fun little novel of self discovery, and if i had to describe it in a few words i'd say it's probably Comphet™ in book form。 the first third of the book almost put me off because the conflict seemed a bit contrived and forced, and i was struggling to find that special something that makes you want to continue reading。 it didn't hit until about halfway through when i realised how much i actually just LIKED Lara okay, little bit of a rocky start but it won me over in the end!this is a lighthearted fun little novel of self discovery, and if i had to describe it in a few words i'd say it's probably Comphet™ in book form。 the first third of the book almost put me off because the conflict seemed a bit contrived and forced, and i was struggling to find that special something that makes you want to continue reading。 it didn't hit until about halfway through when i realised how much i actually just LIKED Lara as a character。 the plot isn't quite as dramatic and messy as i had been expecting, but i like it better this way。 Lara and Jasmine are both just bad at communicating their feelings to each other, thankfully not in an annoying forced way; just in a way that all teenagers do when they're trying to figure out who they are (and i say this as someone whose least favourite trope is miscommunication, so you can trust me!)。 i also liked that the story went beyond just summer-fling-turned-twoo-wuv, and also had Lara reflected on what she actually wanted as an individual; we love to see a woman not defined by her romantic relationships! there's also great rep (jewish, russian, syrian, japanese american, bi, side aroace and nb characters) and all the characters are lovely: there are enough of the them that the book feels richly populated with people you probably/definitely knew in high school, and they're all allowed to be flawed and different in the end。 Shannon really grew on me by the end, thank god。 i think another really important thing that this book emphasises is that not all queer experiences are the same! Lara is just starting to figure herself out now, and i love that her experience is no less valid than her queer friends who have known they were queer since childhood。 growth can happen at any stage of your life, and Lara's denial of her own feelings and grappling with how she thinks she's "supposed" to feel just screams comphet, and it just really endeared her to me。 the reason it's not a perfect read for me is that there are places that it feels a little too convenient or the dialogue is a little clunky, and as i mentioned before, the beginning takes a little while to ramp up before you really care about the characters。 sometimes jasmine's behaviour feels disjointed and strange, like she's mostly messing with Lara's head instead when she's supposedly pining after her。 but overall this book won me over, this ended up being such a lovely read and i read it all in one go basically :) 。。。more

This book did exactly what it set out to do: be a cute, queer, high school romance。 This book follows the MC through her first semester of senior year of high school。 While everyone is thinking about college, homecoming, and football games (which Larissa is as well) she is also thinking about a summer fling that she cant get out of her head。 AND it does't help that the girl that she has been thinking about showed up unannounced on the first day of school。 This rom-com, lightly inspired by Grease This book did exactly what it set out to do: be a cute, queer, high school romance。 This book follows the MC through her first semester of senior year of high school。 While everyone is thinking about college, homecoming, and football games (which Larissa is as well) she is also thinking about a summer fling that she cant get out of her head。 AND it does't help that the girl that she has been thinking about showed up unannounced on the first day of school。 This rom-com, lightly inspired by Grease, was everything I want in tooth-achingly sweet fluff。 And it managed to deal with some heavier topics with surprising frankness that will be helpful to the high school audience of this book。 I'm sure plenty of other reviewers have been talking about how cute the romance is, how great the rep is (shoutout to casually having a real aro-ace character), and how insanely absorbing the writing style is, I wanted to take some time to discuss how thoughtfully the author handled the whole Chase situation and Larissa's relationships with her closest friends。 On the Chase Thing: (view spoiler)[ I think this was handled with so much attention and care。 There are definitely versions of this story where Chase ends up being an asshole about Larissa and versions where he was an ass the whole time。 But he was great! He genuinely cared for her and honestly, I think a lot of high schoolers should see that this is how people should treat others during and after a relationship。 (hide spoiler)]On the Friends thing: I think the complex dynamic that the four of them had was artfully done。 None of her friends were perfect, or even that nice at some points but Larissa never really excused any of their behavior。 She just said that she valued other things in them。 I think that she had insight (that I'm still working on developing as an adult) that one person can't be everything for you。 That friends are not always perfect but they are all in your life for a reason。 。。。more
