Summary

The unforgettable, inspiring story of a teenage girl growing up in a rural Nigerian village who longs to get an education so that she can find her “louding voice” and speak up for herself, The Girl with the Louding Voice is a simultaneously heartbreaking and triumphant tale about the power of fighting for your dreams。

Despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in her path, Adunni never loses sight of her goal of escaping the life of poverty she was born into so that she can build the future she chooses for herself - and help other girls like her do the same。

Her spirited determination to find joy and hope in even the most difficult circumstances imaginable will “break your heart and then put it back together again” (Jenna Bush Hager on The Today Show) even as Adunni shows us how one courageous young girl can inspire us all to reach for our dreams。。。and maybe even change the world。

This is an amazing debut of a novel and I really hope Abi Dare will write another。 I’d give it 3。5 stars if I could, and I really wanted to give it four stars but while it started off strong, it seemed to stall in the middle and get a little lost in what it wanted to accomplish。 I read some of the three star reviews and couldn’t agree more with many of their comments。 The vernacular, for one, is a little disconcerting to begin with but once you pick up the rhythm, there is an elegance to it and This is an amazing debut of a novel and I really hope Abi Dare will write another。 I’d give it 3。5 stars if I could, and I really wanted to give it four stars but while it started off strong, it seemed to stall in the middle and get a little lost in what it wanted to accomplish。 I read some of the three star reviews and couldn’t agree more with many of their comments。 The vernacular, for one, is a little disconcerting to begin with but once you pick up the rhythm, there is an elegance to it and I enjoyed the English word pairings that she used that flowed like a kind of ESL poetry (yes, I do wish I had copied some of the phrasing down to share, and remember! Here’s just one from a random page I opened):“The wind be sounding like a whistle, blowing a sad, cold song。 There is a smell inside the air too, of dusts that swallow water, and I know that the rains are gathering their self to begin falling。”I loved learning about Nigeria and was somewhat shocked once I realized that this is set in modern day as the beginning could be a long time ago (and you kinda hope it was。。。)。 The “fact” snippets at the beginning of some chapters in the second half were informative and helpful in understanding the country。 。。。more

I did not know what to expect when I picked up the book, but it exceeded my expectations。 I really like the character and the way the author painted her story。 I got absorbed in the story and went through every highs and lows felt by the character。 I highly recommend this book!

Once again, my rating is way out of line (lower) than the average。 Unfortunately, I thought much of the story was contrived, and the main character's behavior was often less than credible。 I did learn interesting facts about Nigeria through Adunni's explorations in the library of her wealthy "mistress。" I must give credit to the narrator of the Audible version; she skillfully captured the range of dialects of the characters。 I had difficulty understanding the village dialect at first, but I even Once again, my rating is way out of line (lower) than the average。 Unfortunately, I thought much of the story was contrived, and the main character's behavior was often less than credible。 I did learn interesting facts about Nigeria through Adunni's explorations in the library of her wealthy "mistress。" I must give credit to the narrator of the Audible version; she skillfully captured the range of dialects of the characters。 I had difficulty understanding the village dialect at first, but I eventually grasped most of it! 。。。more

Although this book was written in broken English, it had a cadence to it which made it very enjoyable to read。 It told of a life in another country than I am not familiar with。 I know there are many counties in the world where women are not valued and sold as commodities。 They are mistreated and sometimes killed。 This story told of the plight if young girls in Nigeria。 It was a very interesting story with a different writing style than I am used to。

This was incredible。 Such a powerful story and the writing was just absolutely beautiful。 I can't believe this is her first book and I CAN'T WAIT for more! I highly recommend this one to everyone! This book reminded me of Purple Hibiscus and I even pictured her home compound the same in my head。 This was incredible。 Such a powerful story and the writing was just absolutely beautiful。 I can't believe this is her first book and I CAN'T WAIT for more! Interesting story about a young girl making her way from poverty and tribalism in Nigeria。 The plot was entirely predictable。

Loved this book。 The story was tough to read at times, but I'm so glad I read it。 It was educational, inspiring, and beautiful。 Adunni was so brave and persevered when it seemed like there was no hope。 Loved this book。 The story was tough to read at times, but I'm so glad I read it。 It was educational, inspiring, and beautiful。 Adunni was so brave and persevered when it seemed like there was no hope。 。。。more

“My mama say education will give me a voice。 I want more than just a voice, Ms。 Tia。 I want a louding voice,” I say。 This is a beautiful and brutal read。。。'brutiful' to borrow a word from Glennon Doyle。 It reads like a poem in Adunni's Nigerian pidgin English, but her flowing verse can break a mother's heart at times as we follow her along on her journey to freedom and education。。。at the tender age of 14。 Through it all, we see tragedies, heartaches, injustices, and a few joys through her eyes a “My mama say education will give me a voice。 I want more than just a voice, Ms。 Tia。 I want a louding voice,” I say。 This is a beautiful and brutal read。。。'brutiful' to borrow a word from Glennon Doyle。 It reads like a poem in Adunni's Nigerian pidgin English, but her flowing verse can break a mother's heart at times as we follow her along on her journey to freedom and education。。。at the tender age of 14。 Through it all, we see tragedies, heartaches, injustices, and a few joys through her eyes and the story is riveting。 There are even a few moments where I laughed out loud when language translation became an issue for Adunni。 I loved her love of reading and learning, especially from the book of Nigerian facts。 FACT: 40% of Nigerians live in poverty。 FACT: Child marriage is common in Nigeria, with 43% of girls being married before their 18th birthday, and 17% before they turn 15。 FACT: The prevalence of girl child labour in Nigeria is largely due to household wealth, but other factors such as the educational accomplishment of parents, peer pressure, and demand factors such as high demand for domestic maids and sex workers all contribute to the high incidence of girl child labour in the country。 FACT: This book is definitely worth your time to read to open your eyes to these facts。 。。。more

Fascinating story!! I loved the main character, and everything she stood for。 Powerful novel about a young girl slave, named Adunni, traded into a wealthy and cruel family。 Her resilience and optimism kept me turning pages late into the night。 Such a great book!!

The story and writing starts out rough and then turns incredibly beautiful。 Multiple paragraphs that I would like to frame and hang on a wall for the world to read。

Wow, what a story! Adunni was a courageous, charismatic, driven young girl making her way through heart-breaking circumstances。 I was deeply invested in her resilient fight for a better future, and Daré’s writing brought every relationship to life (made even more realistic by the nonstandard English of a character who learned more and more as the book progressed)。

I loved reading this book & think that the heroine Adunni, with her positivity & singing, will remain in my conscious for a long time!

Wow。 Not at all what I expected。 So glad someone invested in letting the author share this story with us。 It’s about the need to speak up when we see injustice。 About the shameful way women are treated in many parts of the world。 But it’s also a story of love for family and friends。 About a teen who was enslaved as a domestic servant but still was hopeful。 She looked past the exterior of others to the inside to better understand why they were hurting, cruel, etc。 She took the time to get to know Wow。 Not at all what I expected。 So glad someone invested in letting the author share this story with us。 It’s about the need to speak up when we see injustice。 About the shameful way women are treated in many parts of the world。 But it’s also a story of love for family and friends。 About a teen who was enslaved as a domestic servant but still was hopeful。 She looked past the exterior of others to the inside to better understand why they were hurting, cruel, etc。 She took the time to get to know others and allow them to tell their stories。 An amazing story of resilience, compassion, and forgiveness。 。。。more
