Summary

A delicious twist on a Gothic classic, The Wife Upstairs pairs Southern charm with atmospheric domestic suspense, perfect for fans of B。A。 Paris and Megan Miranda。
Meet Jane。 Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives。 The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients。 Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name。

But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester。 Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates’ most mysterious resident。 His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep。 Jane can’t help but see an opportunity in Eddie––not only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection she’s always yearned for。

Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand。 How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past––or his––catches up to her?

With delicious suspense, incisive wit, and a fresh, feminist sensibility, The Wife Upstairs flips the script on a timeless tale of forbidden romance, ill-advised attraction, and a wife who just won’t stay buried。 In this vivid reimagining of one of literature’s most twisted love triangles, which Mrs。 Rochester will get her happy ending?

I was hooked from the start。 Couldn’t put it down!

Without knowing that this was a modern take on my favourite novel, I delved into the book and found myself disappointed with every page turning。 Would pastiche (meant as an insult) suit this book? It feels like Jane Eyre meets Sweet Home Alabama。 To characterise Jane as a manipulative, petty thief who plots her way into people’s lives for an easier life herself does no justice to Bronté’s Jane。 The title The Wife Upstairs gives too much away upfront。 The classic, Jane Eyre, is still read today ( Without knowing that this was a modern take on my favourite novel, I delved into the book and found myself disappointed with every page turning。 Would pastiche (meant as an insult) suit this book? This story of a dog walker who ends up living with a widowed millionaire keeps you guessing throughout。 A great story, enjoyably irritating characters and some great twists!

I think this book was very cool and awesome。 It was a page turner and wanted me to read more and more every day。 It is a mysterious story。 I highly recommend this book

Good book, written really well! Thought the twist would be a little more dramatic but all in all I enjoyed it! Just not a favorite for me。

This was a high stress, creepy page turner! I mostly read historical fiction and YA, but when I need a brain break I like to pick up a fun and twisty thriller or two。 They are often fast paced and intriguing。 This one was just what I wanted!!The story follows a young woman named Jane who is a dog walker and in an attempt to start over she seizes an opportunity to step up and out of her crummy life。 She quickly marries Eddie, her newly widowed boss and slides into her new lifestyle。 Only。。。is Bee This was a high stress, creepy page turner! I loved how the author totally nails how annoying and petty suburban life can be! From the gossip to the botox and day drinking, she sets the perfect stage for this drama filled story。 Jane quickly realises some thing don't quite add up in her new life and she can't shake the feeling that Bee, the original wife still has a stake in her current reality。 What really happened to her? Is she just missing or was she murdered? And what's that noise in the attic?? Super fun, spine tingling page turner! 。。。more

This was a solid murder/mystery。 I thought it was pretty good!! It kept me interested the whole time and definitely had many twists。 The ending was very surprising-I never would’ve guessed how it turned out。 The author did a great job directing attention elsewhere and then surprised me at the end!I also liked this because it was set in Mountain Brook, which made it an enjoyable/familiar read。 I’d definitely recommend this to friends!

Three and a half stars。 Easy to read。 Had some twists and turns that I liked, but ultimately, I didn’t like ANY of the characters。 Not believable。

Dalton Harrison

The book had many missed opportunities。 I felt that the writing was poor and lacked detail。 I felt that the author could have embellished the story more and not given away spoilers 50 pages into the book

Amy

Interesting book。 A little obvious at times and I did figure out most of the book。 Not the most spine-tingling I have ever read but it did like it。

Great variation on a classic!

I started this book with trepidation because reimaginings of classics often go horribly wrong。 Last year, I read a godawful version of "Bleak House" that portrayed the Jarndyce estate as the main location of a 1800s human trafficking ring。 *shudder* Needless to say, it completely ruined my favorite Dickens novel。 Fortunately, this was different enough from the real deal that my love of the original Rochester clan remains unmarred。 The writing was decent, but not extraordinary, and the ending was I started this book with trepidation because reimaginings of classics often go horribly wrong。 Last year, I read a godawful version of "Bleak House" that portrayed the Jarndyce estate as the main location of a 1800s human trafficking ring。 *shudder* Needless to say, it completely ruined my favorite Dickens novel。 Fortunately, this was different enough from the real deal that my love of the original Rochester clan remains unmarred。 The writing was decent, but not extraordinary, and the ending was little meh。 What saved this book was main character Jane, who is a far cry from your innocent, helpless thriller heroine。 That and snark。 This book has a healthy helping of wonderful cynicism and snark。 And that, dear readers, more than atones for its flaws。 。。。more

A twisty tale that kept me guessing。 Recommended。

For a “thriller”, I was able to guess some of the stuff happening。 Didn’t realize this was an updated Jane Eyre story until after I finished it。。 I have so many mixed emotions and thoughts about the book。

Lois

Just a really weird book。 Not my cup of tea。

You won’t be able to put this book down! I was hooked on the first page。 And I’m wanting more novels from this excellent author。 I loved the twists and turns and the surprises kept coming。 A fabulous thriller。

Pretty decent story, and it was cool that it was set in my hometown, but waaaay too much bad language。 Completely unnecessary。。。

This book is sort of an updated Jane Eyre, with a few twists。 It takes place in Thornfield Estates in Alabama, with Jane Bell the poverty stricken dog walker and Eddie Rochester the owner of a beautiful home there。 A few months before, Blanche Ingraham and Bea Rochester were supposedly drowned in a boating accident, but actually Bea is being held upstairs in a "panic room" in Eddie's home。 There are lots of surprises in the book and it is a quick read。 This book is sort of an updated Jane Eyre, with a few twists。 It takes place in Thornfield Estates in Alabama, with Jane Bell the poverty stricken dog walker and Eddie Rochester the owner of a beautiful home there。 A few months before, Blanche Ingraham and Bea Rochester were supposedly drowned in a boating accident, but actually Bea is being held upstairs in a "panic room" in Eddie's home。 There are lots of surprises in the book and it is a quick read。 。。。more
