An acknowledged masterpiece, this is the story of seven generations of the Buendia family and of Macondo, the town they have built。 Though little more than a settlement surrounded by mountains, Macondo has its wars and disasters, even its wonders and miracles。 A microcosm of Columbian life, its secrets lie hidden, encoded in a book and only Aureliano Buendia can fathom its mysteries and reveal its shrouded destiny。 Blending political reality with magic realism, fantasy with comic invention, "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is one of the most daringly original works of the twentieth century。

A beautifully written book that deserves a TV miniseries。 While some of the chapters can be long and, at times, meandering, it does not discount the power that some of the smaller stories in this book tell。 This was a harder read to get through for me personally, because I am fairly new to reading for fun, but I did very much enjoy it。

Since the early days of my Spanish minor, Márquez's work has tugged at me, given his preeminent place in literature。 So when I stumbled across a used paperback copy of 100 Years of Solitude, I snatched it up, eager to read what has been alluded as the quintessential Latin American classic。The writing was excellent。 There is a literary quality that makes the setting and characters come alive。 There are also 200 too many pages。 I don't mind long books, but trying to keep track of similar plot line Since the early days of my Spanish minor, Márquez's work has tugged at me, given his preeminent place in literature。 So when I stumbled across a used paperback copy of 100 Years of Solitude, I snatched it up, eager to read what has been alluded as the quintessential Latin American classic。The writing was excellent。 There is a literary quality that makes the setting and characters come alive。 There are also 200 too many pages。 I don't mind long books, but trying to keep track of similar plot lines with characters of the same names (thank heaven for the pedigree chart at the front!) takes far too much effort when one is reading for pleasure vs a university literature class。Ultimately, it gets 4 stars for the writing and 2 stars for a plot that takes entirely too many words, and too much effort, to really enjoy any of it。 。。。more

The first time I tried to read this book, I don't think I was emotionally, spiritually, or mentally equipped to handle the magic and thus found it inaccessible。 However, if you are open in mind, body, and spirit, this might be the single most beautiful piece of literature I've ever had the privilege of reading。 The major critique of this book is that the plot is difficult to follow and the characters all have the same names。 That is what makes this book so magnificent。 The story cascades, ebbs a The first time I tried to read this book, I don't think I was emotionally, spiritually, or mentally equipped to handle the magic and thus found it inaccessible。 However, if you are open in mind, body, and spirit, this might be the single most beautiful piece of literature I've ever had the privilege of reading。 The major critique of this book is that the plot is difficult to follow and the characters all have the same names。 That is what makes this book so magnificent。 The story cascades, ebbs and flows, and moves like water。 I found that I could move between the characters with ease。 But honestly, it doesn't matter if you remember these characters, what happened to them, or who they are。 Garcia Marquez plays with memory and imagination like no other。 You believe the fantastical, understand the mystical and find yourself in complete and total awe。 All I can say is that I may never be the same again。 。。。more

It is captivating, boring, dizzyingly exhausting, and also completely unending。 While I found my way through piece, I found that I lost my reason why, beyond I have gotten this far into it。 It is worth the read if you have the time, there is beautiful magical realism in it, but there is also a lot of pain and suffering in the novel, a approach cautiously。

Sentimientos encontrados, se me hizo un libro insoportable al principio, bizarro, pero a la mitad del mismo, percibí un cambio en la narración, que me hizo interesarme por los personajes, más que querer que se murieran todos y se acabará la tortura。

Overwhelmed by the humanity of it all。 This monster of a book is not an easy or fast read, but is sincerely one of the most human books I have ever read。

Why do like 90% of the characters share the name with at least one other character。

I almost gave up on this book, after confusing characters one to many times。 Then, I created a flowchart and started again。 The second reading was much more enjoyable than the first。 I find magic realism fresh and I frequently laughed aloud at the absurdity, neatly tied into the real。 As the end of the book neared, all the elements tied together so perfectly that I wanted to applaud。 The ending touched me, and the Garcia family, with all its charms and flaws, stayed with me。 The situations were I almost gave up on this book, after confusing characters one to many times。 Then, I created a flowchart and started again。 The second reading was much more enjoyable than the first。 I find magic realism fresh and I frequently laughed aloud at the absurdity, neatly tied into the real。 As the end of the book neared, all the elements tied together so perfectly that I wanted to applaud。 The ending touched me, and the Garcia family, with all its charms and flaws, stayed with me。 The situations were extremely interesting, and since I am not South American, I imagine that there are still facets of this story that I can't comprehend。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The book is about Buendia family's solitude due to the repetition of names as it seems that they make them take the same decisions / actions causing a tragic ending for each one。 I liked that the development of the story was very detailed for each character。 In the other hand, I did not like most of the family had the same names, because I understand that it is the plot of the book and explains a large part of it, but I think it can be confusing to know who is being talked about in the story。 I The book is about Buendia family's solitude due to the repetition of names as it seems that they make them take the same decisions / actions causing a tragic ending for each one。 I liked that the development of the story was very detailed for each character。 In the other hand, I did not like most of the family had the same names, because I understand that it is the plot of the book and explains a large part of it, but I think it can be confusing to know who is being talked about in the story。 I think it is a good book where you can find mystery, fantasy, reality and much more。Gabriel García MárquezOne Hundred Years of Solitude 。。。more
