Summary

This is Stephen Hawking's updated, expanded and illustrated edition of his celebrated work which includes the most recent developments in the field, many of which were forecast by him。 At the same time, he explains his complex theories through a fresh visual dimension。 Over one hunded and fifty stunning colour illustrations have been specially commissioned for this purpose to help the reader understand what have become popular mythic images of our century, but which nonetheless remain difficult, abstract ideas to grasp。 It includes a new introduction written specially for this edition。

In this book, Hawking set out to make physics understandable to non-experts。 I was able to follow most of this book, although I'll admit that I felt a bit lost in chapter 7 (Black Holes Ain't So Black)。 I thought he did a good job of starting with basics (protons, neutrons, and electrons) and building on that。 The language was often straightforward, and the examples were generally helpful。There were a lot of great history lessons, and I learned more about many scientists (and heard of some for t In this book, Hawking set out to make physics understandable to non-experts。 I was able to follow most of this book, although I'll admit that I felt a bit lost in chapter 7 (Black Holes Ain't So Black)。 I thought he did a good job of starting with basics (protons, neutrons, and electrons) and building on that。 The language was often straightforward, and the examples were generally helpful。There were a lot of great history lessons, and I learned more about many scientists (and heard of some for the first time)。 I really enjoyed how he discussed the progression of his career, including how it was impacted by ALS, and how he had changed several beliefs over time。I learned a lot from the book, although I'm sure I could learn almost as much by reading it a second time。 There's a lot to take in。I don't have any formal training in physics, although I really enjoyed it in high school。 For me, the book was at the perfect level--some concepts that I could remember, and a lot that expanded on the concepts。 I was pleasantly surprised at how accessible I found it (chapter 7 and some of the discussion of string theory notwithstanding)。I found it really helpful to have a glossary in the back so that I could refer back to a quick and clear definition of a term like "uncertainty principle" if I had to take a couple of days away from the book。 I found the appendices at the back hilarious--he tried to portray them as brief biographies of famous scientists, but it seemed like his intention was just to tell the world was a jerk Isaac Newton was。The book has sat on my shelf for 20+ years, and I'm glad I finally got around to reading it。 。。。more

This book is presented as an introduction, but be prepared! I learned a lot, but as an absolute newcomer to physics and the hard sciences in general, I found it hard to fully grasp certain concepts or to think of them in simultaneous with new ideas as Hawking was introducing them。 The book is packed with information, but I think I would have taken more from it if I had some prior knowledge of physics, or if he'd explained some of these postulates in greater detail。 Some parts left me confused be This book is presented as an introduction, but be prepared! I just came back from the journey of the universe with Stephen Hawking。 He tried to tell me the difficult concepts of how this universe works in a very understandable language and I do get almost everything from his mechanical voice, (playing inside my head while reading) but only because I have a science background。 The part of story about how things were and how they change with the new discoveries and theories may be targeted to the majority of the audience, but the part where real science in I just came back from the journey of the universe with Stephen Hawking。 He tried to tell me the difficult concepts of how this universe works in a very understandable language and I do get almost everything from his mechanical voice, (playing inside my head while reading) but only because I have a science background。 The part of story about how things were and how they change with the new discoveries and theories may be targeted to the majority of the audience, but the part where real science involves, then you need to search few things on the internet。 But definitely anyone reading this already into these stuffs and know most of the things describes by Dr Hawking。 I recommend to read this even if you have to search many things on the internet, as this is worth to give time to understand the brief history of time。 。。。more

What a ride! I understood about 40% of what I read, but enough to realize how insignificant our tiny little planet is in the Universe。 A big thank you to Stephen Hawking for explaining complicated as heck theories (including the foundation, physicists 101, I remember some things from my high school physics classes) in normal people language and a ton of language。 Loved it。 Also, wow Einstein did A LOT。

Alice

A wonderful book, both a great overview of the history of thought and conflicts within physics as layman explanations of the theories and how and why we believe them。

A detailed view of explaining the birth of the universe in a more simplified manner。 The entire world of physics is contained in 200 pages。 Amazing work by Stephen!!

Stephen Hawking has explained the entire universe in 200 pages A brief history of time is written in a simple manner。 Sometimes it is interesting, sometimes it is boring。 However, I still found many theories from this book that I didn't know。Hawking explained the current theories about the universe excellently。 The theories are a bit tough for a regular person to understand, so I guess you need to have a basic idea about them。 I recommend reading Introducing Stephen Hawking by J。P。McEvoy fi Stephen Hawking has explained the entire universe in 200 pages A brief history of time is written in a simple manner。 Sometimes it is interesting, sometimes it is boring。 However, I still found many theories from this book that I didn't know。Hawking explained the current theories about the universe excellently。 The theories are a bit tough for a regular person to understand, so I guess you need to have a basic idea about them。 I recommend reading Introducing Stephen Hawking by J。P。McEvoy first, because this book explains the modern theories briefly。 However, a Brief History Of Time focuses more on Hawking's own theories about Big Bang and The Black Holes。 The eventual goal of science is to provide a single theory that describes the whole universe From my experience, I don't recommend this book for all。 All people may not be able to read this。 It took me at least 5 hours to completely understand the General and Special theory of relativity。 Also, I think it is a bit confusing。 So my total rating is 4 stars。 But I understood a lot of advanced science from it。 Hawking was truly one of the best cosmologists who ever lived。 。。。more

My rating is based on how often I felt like I am thick as shit。 The book is amazing but he could've made it a bit more layman。 It's a tad show-offy。 But fascinating。 My rating is based on how often I felt like I am thick as shit。 The book is amazing but he could've made it a bit more layman。 It's a tad show-offy。 But fascinating。 。。。more

There are some books that seem to exist just to remind you of how small you are in the universe。 Hawking's most famous work covers and extraordinary amount of ground in less than 200 pages, from the simple to the almost incomprehensible。A colleague of mine, reading it at the same time as me, mentioned that as soon as he finished he felt like he would have to read it all over again。 It demands time, it demands attention and engagement, and yet it still makes for a deeply rewarding read。 Hawking n There are some books that seem to exist just to remind you of how small you are in the universe。 Hawking's most famous work covers and extraordinary amount of ground in less than 200 pages, from the simple to the almost incomprehensible。A colleague of mine, reading it at the same time as me, mentioned that as soon as he finished he felt like he would have to read it all over again。 It demands time, it demands attention and engagement, and yet it still makes for a deeply rewarding read。 Hawking not only explores the limits of what we know (or knew, I imagine theoretical physics has covered some ground since this was first published) but provides insights into what we still do not know, and the questions that we still have to answer。 。。。more

At times complicated to understand but still, a great way to start getting your head around physics and how it has helped us described the universe we live in。 Extra points if you have a friend who’s also a Physicist。 Will give you several nights of interesting conversations。

This book is simply a splendid beauty。 Anyone from any discipline can go through this book without knowing any scientific notion or else care of scientific terminology。 When I started this book, I felt like I read a fiction。 Hawking told us the story of our universe and its origin, structure, development, and the fate of the universe。 Lastly, he describes about the search for a unifying theory that describes everything in the Universe in a coherent manner。

He may have been a genius, but that capacity does not translate into the ability to explain in writing his concepts of relativity, space-time, theoretical physics and singularity to a reasonably educated man。

I have mixed feeling about this book since there're some parts I really like (the double split experiment (quantum physics); black hole; time traveling) but there're also some parts that are too complicated to comprehend (for me)。 Overall this is an interesting book that requires a lot of left-brain thinking。Don't forget to read the bonus parts about Einstein, Galilei and Newton - those are fun to read, too。 I have mixed feeling about this book since there're some parts I really like (the double split experiment (quantum physics); black hole; time traveling) but there're also some parts that are too complicated to comprehend (for me)。 Overall this is an interesting book that requires a lot of left-brain thinking。Don't forget to read the bonus parts about Einstein, Galilei and Newton - those are fun to read, too。 。。。more
