Summary

Stardust is an utterly charming fairy tale in the tradition of The Princess Bride and The Neverending Story。 Neil Gaiman, creator of the darkly elegant Sandman comics and author of The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish, tells the story of young Tristran Thorn and his adventures in the land of Faerie。 One fateful night, Tristran promises his beloved that he will retrieve a fallen star for her from beyond the Wall that stands between their rural English town (called, appropriately, Wall) and the Faerie realm。 No one ever ventures beyond the Wall except to attend an enchanted flea market that is held every nine years (and during which, unbeknownst to him, Tristran was conceived)。 But Tristran bravely sets out to fetch the fallen star and thus win the hand of his love。

This was a lovely little story which has such a whimsical and folktale like nature about it。 The film of this book is one of my favourite things to watch to cheer me up, and although the book was a lot shorter than I was expecting (and so couldn't go into as much depth as the film did) I still enjoyed it。The ending was different to the film, and although it was vastly different in tone, it definitely fit the book better, just as the movie ending fit it better。 Very fun This was a lovely little story which has such a whimsical and folktale like nature about it。 The film of this book is one of my favourite things to watch to cheer me up, and although the book was a lot shorter than I was expecting (and so couldn't go into as much depth as the film did) I still enjoyed it。The ending was different to the film, and although it was vastly different in tone, it definitely fit the book better, just as the movie ending fit it better。 Very fun 。。。more

I loved every bit of this book。 It was recommended to me by a dear friend who loves Neil Gaiman。 This book made me remember how much I love fairy tales。 It reminded me that I started by reading books because of my love for fairy tales。 Mr。 Gaiman has a wonderful way of storytelling that immerses you into the story。 I wouldn't have read this when I was younger because it seems so vivid, adult, and dark。 Reading it now was perfect。 I really can't tell you how great this book was。 Good thing I've n I loved every bit of this book。 It was recommended to me by a dear friend who loves Neil Gaiman。 This book made me remember how much I love fairy tales。 It reminded me that I started by reading books because of my love for fairy tales。 Mr。 Gaiman has a wonderful way of storytelling that immerses you into the story。 I wouldn't have read this when I was younger because it seems so vivid, adult, and dark。 Reading it now was perfect。 I really can't tell you how great this book was。 Good thing I've never seen the movie because I feel like that would have made me biased as well。 。。。more

It was hard not to compare this to the film。 I do prefer the film but I do think that the book just about holds up well on its own。

I listened to the audiobook for this while driving home from my college and it was delightful! I’d definitely read more of Gaiman’s work — his world is magical, his characters realistic and relatable, and his story is very inventive!

I've seen the movie several times and liked it, so I wanted to read the book。 The book has a lot that is not in the movie, but the movie is not faithful to the book。 In a way, they are 2 different stories。 I've seen the movie several times and liked it, so I wanted to read the book。 The book has a lot that is not in the movie, but the movie is not faithful to the book。 In a way, they are 2 different stories。 。。。more

It was fine。 Entertaining, creative, as easy and pleasant to read as a slice of watermelon in summer。 But I would not say it is the book of the year, by far。 It is fast-paced, and I didn't really have time to indulge myself with the world of Faerie nor to develop a strong attachment (or caring) to the characters。 However, I do not see it necessarily as a defect since this pacing and brevity are well suited to the fairy tale format (you would not expect a fairy tale to last 1000 pages and to pain It was fine。 Entertaining, creative, as easy and pleasant to read as a slice of watermelon in summer。 But I would not say it is the book of the year, by far。 It is fast-paced, and I didn't really have time to indulge myself with the world of Faerie nor to develop a strong attachment (or caring) to the characters。 However, I do not see it necessarily as a defect since this pacing and brevity are well suited to the fairy tale format (you would not expect a fairy tale to last 1000 pages and to paint everything with scientific accuracy)。I did not see the movie when I read it but it made me curious to watch it now and see how it was adapted to the screen。 。。。more

Gaiman knows how to write a nice, engaging tale, but honestly? I'm not blown away。 Yet again。(view spoiler)[That ending with Yvaine being eternal and forever at the core of her being alone, though? Ouch。 I was on a public streetcar! I couldn't show feelings!! I call that sabotage!!! (hide spoiler)]Also, that BBC dramatization is absolutely amazing, much recommend。 Gaiman knows how to write a nice, engaging tale, but honestly? Very good book, I would highly recommend。 It has some themes to point towards it being more of an adult story but they're not at all central to the main story。 Overall it was very enjoyable and funny at some points! Ugh what a book。 I fall more in love with Neil Gaiman with every page。 I had only seen the movie so definitely wanted to see how the book compared and (let’s all insert our faux surprise here) the book was WAY better。 So much good content and quotes。 The end doesn’t leave you hanging but wraps it up with other opportunity for your imagination to wander。 Some of my favorite quotes:“It’s not hard to own something。 Or everything。 You just have to know that it’s yours and then be willing to let it g Ugh what a book。 I fall more in love with Neil Gaiman with every page。 I had only seen the movie so definitely wanted to see how the book compared and (let’s all insert our faux surprise here) the book was WAY better。 So much good content and quotes。 The end doesn’t leave you hanging but wraps it up with other opportunity for your imagination to wander。 Some of my favorite quotes:“It’s not hard to own something。 Or everything。 You just have to know that it’s yours and then be willing to let it go” “Don’t confuse the teacher with the lesson, the ritual with the ecstasy, the transmitter of the symbol with the symbol itself” I also love the growing pattern between his books like the Hempstocks! 。。。more

Probably my least liked Gaiman book but it is still a Gaiman book, which is to say that his worst is still better than many other's best。 Started off slow but picked up towards the end。 Good example of a modern day fairy tale。 Probably my least liked Gaiman book but it is still a Gaiman book, which is to say that his worst is still better than many other's best。 Started off slow but picked up towards the end。 Good example of a modern day fairy tale。 。。。more

I have been very excited to read this book, since I'm a big fan of Neil Gaiman's work through comics。 So, I finally finished to read my first Gaiman book。。。 And I loved it! I watched the movie before (and there are many differences) but I enjoyed the original story a little bit more: you soon realize it's more adult-orientated than the movie。 The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I felt the ending went too fast, and I might have been expecting a more consistent development of Trista I have been very excited to read this book, since I'm a big fan of Neil Gaiman's work through comics。 So, I finally finished to read my first Gaiman book。。。 And I loved it! Cute, coming-of-age, Disney-like faerie-fantasy "for adults" (thats what the PR says)。 The author adopts, for better or worse, a pseudo-Victorian/Edwardian tone throughout。 While it generally works, sometimes it makes the characters feel a bit too dry and distant, particularly the hero Tristan, who is a bit too aloof for our (and his) own good。 The colourfulness of Gaiman's 'Faerie'-world isn't shared by too many of the characters。 The Edwardianisms can't hide the fact that the author isn't as w Cute, coming-of-age, Disney-like faerie-fantasy "for adults" (thats what the PR says)。 The author adopts, for better or worse, a pseudo-Victorian/Edwardian tone throughout。 While it generally works, sometimes it makes the characters feel a bit too dry and distant, particularly the hero Tristan, who is a bit too aloof for our (and his) own good。 The colourfulness of Gaiman's 'Faerie'-world isn't shared by too many of the characters。 The Edwardianisms can't hide the fact that the author isn't as witty and original as G。K。 Chesterton or as lyrical and eloquent as William Morris。On occasion, however, Gaiman rises above the clichés to show that he is a capable writer。 Take this passage:"。。。for there is no competing with the sea in a man's affections, since she is both mother and mistress, and she will wash his corpse also, in time to come, wash it to coral and ivory and pearls。"Good stuff。 But most of the prose lacks passion of this passage。 Aloof characters and aloof writing。 What we end up with is a breezy, precious and mostly forgettable novel。 。。。more

Took a while for me to finish this book because there was always something that I ought to be doing (with life and all) but I always have a magical experience every time I open this! I am somehow glad that I took my time and enjoyed this tale piece by piece。 The depiction of Wall and Faerie are so surreal! As soon as I finished, I know that I'll be rereading this ASAP。 This is definitely a book that could take your mind off things to experience a world of fantasy, adventure, and of course, love!
