Summary

Four cassettes, 6 hours

Life was good for Liz and Jack Sutherland。  In 18 years of marriage, they had built a family, a successful law practice, and a warm, happy home near San Francisco, in a house on Hope Street。  Then, in an instant, it all fell apart。  It began like any other Christmas morning, with joy and children's laughter。  But for Jack Sutherland, a five-minute errand ends in tragedy。  And suddenly, Liz is alone, facing painful questions in the wake of an unbearable loss。

How can she go on without her husband, her partner, her best friend?  How can she grieve when she must console five devastated children, including one with special needs of his own?  Powered by her children's love, Liz finds the strength to return to work, to become both mother and 'daddy', coaching her youngest son for the Special Olympics。  And one by one the holidays come and go before her eyes: Valentine's Day without flowers and without Jack。。。Easter。。。July 4th。。。Then, just weeks before Labor Day, a devastating accident sends her oldest son to the hospital-and brings a doctor named Bill Webster into her life。  Bill becomes a friend to Liz as he slowly heals her shattered son。

And as long as the days of summer blend into fall, a new relationship offers new hope, and Liz reflects on what she has, on what she's lost, on the little blessings that give strength when nothing else is left。  Then, with the first anniversary of her husband's death approaching, and with it another Christmas in the house on Hope Street, Liz will face one more crisis before she can look back at a year of mourning and change-and ahead to the beginning of a new life。

Some parts were boring and illogical to me, but overall it was a great story。 Definitely a good read for these days! In my opinion, stories like these can make you feel better and give you hope, especially now that we are living in a really hard time。(view spoiler)[ I just don't understand Liz and Bill's relationship。 In my opinion everything was happening so fast with them, e。g when she agreed to marry him or at the end when they got back together。 (hide spoiler)] However, I read it in spring Some parts were boring and illogical to me, but overall it was a great story。 Definitely a good read for these days! It was a warm fuzzy journey and a great insight in what elders feel like after losing a lot in their life。 It's a novel full of loss and hope and a good take on how life goes on even after too many tragedies。 It was a warm fuzzy journey and a great insight in what elders feel like after losing a lot in their life。 It's a novel full of loss and hope and a good take on how life goes on even after too many tragedies。 。。。more

This is the first of her books that I’ve actually somewhat liked recently。 As I work my way through the stack I stupidly purchased years ago, I’m happy to be almost to the end of it。 Her writing is horrible and her story telling is kind of flat。 I think what I liked about this particular book is that, unlike most of her stories, it wasn’t about a weak woman who was being controlled and manipulated by a man。 This was actually a decent story idea, and the lead character (Liz) is actually strong, i This is the first of her books that I’ve actually somewhat liked recently。 As I work my way through the stack I stupidly purchased years ago, I’m happy to be almost to the end of it。 Her writing is horrible and her story telling is kind of flat。 I think what I liked about this particular book is that, unlike most of her stories, it wasn’t about a weak woman who was being controlled and manipulated by a man。 This was actually a decent story idea, and the lead character (Liz) is actually strong, intelligent, capable, and successful。 It was a little hard to get to the enjoyment part with so much sadness and depression at the beginning though。 I read for enjoyment, not to be saddened。 Thankfully, the story turned around and ended on a happy note, which is what I expected。 My favorite characters were Jamie and Peter, a little boy who was premature and had a slight disability and his older brother, who helped anchor the family。 Jamie’s honesty created some light-hearted humor and was a welcome presence throughout the story, and Peter’s support of both Jamie and his Mom was heartwarming。 Those two characters helped normalize the story and drew the other characters together。 The tension between Liz’s daughter, Megan, and Bill is expected in this situation, but how it was presented was just a little over the top。 I was surprised that it went unspoken between Megan and her mother。 For such an event, there should have been some discussion, even if it was just between Peter and Megan。 Simply put, Megan was rude and is a brat, despite her feelings and what she had been through, and she should have been called on it。 There’s one scene that I’m still trying to figure out。 Liz is a successful attorney。 Why the author wrote in that one of the characters borrowed a black coat for her to wear with her black dress to the funeral was just weird。 For one thing, she lives in a city that gets cold and it was December。 She would have owned a nice coat to wear to work and other places。 It was a weird addition that added nothing to the story and made zero sense。 These are the kinds of things that annoy me about Danielle Steel’s books。Oh, I almost forgot。。。 this book has nothing to do with a house on Hope Street, other than the fact that these characters lived in a house on Hope Street。 WTH? 🙄All in all, it was an interesting story, but the bad writing and extreme sadness at the beginning make it no more than a three for me。 On a humorous note, a little over 30 pages were missing from my copy, so I had to go to the library and check out another copy。 。。。more

Disappointing。 Starts out with uncharacteristic (and unromantic) violence, not really needed to set up the remaining plot。 And trying hard not to reveal plot, the romance falls apart, stays apart and then everything is made right in the last page。 We don't get a glimmer of the change a protagonist goes through。 I got the strong feeling that there was a publication deadline approaching and Steel had run out of time。 Disappointing。 Starts out with uncharacteristic (and unromantic) violence, not really needed to set up the remaining plot。 And trying hard not to reveal plot, the romance falls apart, stays apart and then everything is made right in the last page。 We don't get a glimmer of the change a protagonist goes through。 I got the strong feeling that there was a publication deadline approaching and Steel had run out of time。 。。。more

This was a decent book。 Actually it was pretty good for the first 3/4 or so。 It had me crying within the first hour, was difficult to put down, and was an emotional story。 The least quarter or so of the book though was not very good。 I really disliked the ending。 As soon as the thanksgiving holiday happened, the rest became predictable, annoying, and just not what it could have been。 The last portion ruined the book for me, unfortunately。

2。5 did I outgrow Danielle Steel novels ?or was this just a repetitive, formulated, predictable mess? I guess you can't always make everyone happy, either way it was short and I still have 8 or 9 books to read to meet my Goodreads goal🙄 2。5 did I outgrow Danielle Steel novels ?or was this just a repetitive, formulated, predictable mess? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 O título do livro não tem nada a ver com a história。 Não acontece nada com a casa。 Nesse aspecto foi uma desilusão。 Também não gostei do facto de ela ter ficado com o Bill。 Ela aceitava sempre tudo o que ele dizia。 Ela merecia melhor。 Não bastava ela já ter sofrido o suficiente, ainda ficou a sofrer por causa dele。 Tive pena de ela não ter encontrado alguém melhor durante o tempo que ele deu。

I love Danielle steel but the story is just too predictable
