Summary

In this asylum, your mind plays tricks on you all the time…

Delia’s new house isn’t just a house。 Long ago, it was the Piven Institute for the Care and Correction of Troubled Females—an insane asylum nicknamed “Hysteria Hall。” However, many of the inmates were not insane, just defiant and strong willed。 Kind of like Delia herself。

But the house still wants to keep “troubled” girls locked away。 So, in the most horrifying way, Delia gets trapped。

And that’s when she learns that the house is also haunted。

Ghost girls wander the halls in their old-fashioned nightgowns。 A handsome ghost boy named Theo roams the grounds。 Delia finds that all the spirits are unsettled and full of dark secrets。 The house, as well, harbors shocking truths within its walls—truths that only Delia can uncover, and that may set her free。

But she’ll need to act quickly, before the house’s power overtakes everything she loves。

From master of suspense Katie Alender comes a riveting tale of twisted memories and betrayals, and the meaning of madness。

Forever one of my favorite books

I read this book when I was in 6th grade and let me tell you, it was amazing。 It is not a horror book even though the cover seems to differ but "don't judge a book by its cover"。 It is such an amazing story about this young girl and her life in a haunted house。 It is more of a mystery but not really, I'm not sure if this helps but don't think too much and just read it。 If you like a very light yet mysterious read this is defo a must。 I read this book when I was in 6th grade and let me tell you, it was amazing。 It is not a horror book even though the cover seems to differ but "don't judge a book by its cover"。 It is such an amazing story about this young girl and her life in a haunted house。 It is more of a mystery but not really, I'm not sure if this helps but don't think too much and just read it。 If you like a very light yet mysterious read this is defo a must。 。。。more

I went into this book with literally zero knowledge of what it was about, solely drawn in by the title。 I was expecting something spooky and horror-ish, and I guess maybe it was? But I never really felt the creep factor I was expecting。 Which wasn't necessarily a bad thing - I still really enjoyed this story - but it just wasn't what I thought I'd be getting。 Nonetheless, this is a story about a strong, stubborn girl, her love of her family, and her fight to uncover truths and defeat the evil lu I went into this book with literally zero knowledge of what it was about, solely drawn in by the title。 I was expecting something spooky and horror-ish, and I guess maybe it was? It's a very entertaining read。 。。。more

This young adult book was really a page turner。 I couldn’t wait to find out more about each character and why they were where they were。 The story is one that you might expect, but it’s told well。 So that you care what happens to each character in the end。 Great ghost story about the love of sisters and family and friends。 I liked it so much i donated my copy to our middle school library so some more people can enjoy it。

Alender has done it again!Killing off the main character was a wild creative choice but Whoa! It paid off!I was up late reading this, carrying it around, utterly entranced。I like that Alender's ghost stories deal with grief。 It's nice。 Alender has done it again!Killing off the main character was a wild creative choice but Whoa! The initial setup to the conflict of the whole story was well done。 I liked it。But that's it。 I found myself dragging to finish this book just because I wanted to know how they resolve the problem but it felt so draggy。 Some characters would confuse me because one moment they're supposed to be bad and then towards the end they help? With little to no explanation。 Maybe because they were more of background characters? Sorry but you lost me there。 And I know Florence was merely a pawn but that battle was cut a little short。 Anticlimactic。2。 The cheesiness: first with her reason she would win the fight with Florence was bc of her love。 Gag me。 I don't need another love wins all reminder。 And then the ending when they're all turning bright and leaving and the last sentence "Rest in peace"。 Yes I'm glad the ghosts aren't being held hostage anymore and they're moving on but can we find some way to not have cheesy ghosts endings like this?3。 The main character(s) are kind of the same in her books。 Bad Girls Don't Die we have two sisters。 Here we have the same main character is the older sister, main side character is the younger sister。 And personalities don't waver much between the main characters。 I like a girl becoming strong willed but can we not make it seem cookie cutter in all the books? In conclusion, I like this book, but it does has some annoying flaws。 It needs more depth。 Not keeping it on my shelf but a good read。 Has some creepy moments。 But if you want the best and an actual horror book, read the Bad Girls Don't Die trilogy by her。 First book is creepy, second book is scary, and third is straight horror。 Seriously, I almost had nightmares。 I love them。 。。。more

If you love thriller novels, where a lot of questions are for you to interpret, then pick up this book。 I haven’t been able to put it down since I got it。 Granted I got it in the middle of school, but I started it as soon as I got home with a few brain brakes here and there。 This story is so compelling and the characters are so interesting。 I will definitely have to get my own copy and tab it cause it’s that amazing

Her character as much as I loved it, felt like two people in one。 -the setting: LOVED IT, PERFECT FOR A HORROR BOOK FILLED WITH MYSTERY AND GHOSTS AND SCARY, EVIL SPIRITS。 -characters: there were amazing characters that I loved so, so much。 I enjoyed the family together, the love they shared for each other and the real character development of each and every character, it was so enjoyable。 - a VERY GOOD READ! AND it goes by fast, pretty action packed!!!!!!!!!!! SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!- I had some issues with some of the plot line。。。。。。。THE MAXWELL PIVENS! I was so confused and still am to what he WAS actually。。。。Delia defeated him, pretty much with her words and he was gone yet, he was keeping all of the females imprisoned and enslaved to the houses doings?? I- ok。 - I ALSO STILL REALLY DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT THE SHADOW BLACK FIRE MONSTER WAS LIKE。。。WAS IT OR WAS IT NOT A PART OF THE EVIL OF MAXWELL PIVENS。KINDA WACK。-THE ENDING: so ofc the twists were great and the story of the house reveals itself with the knowledge that the sweet southern belle FLORENCE IS THE PUPPET MASTER。 That as a decent enough twist, I enjoyed it but not as much as MARIA GETTING HER REDEMPTION, YES GIRL。 ANYWHO, I did enjoy the ending, I felt at peace as they found their peace。。。。to be completely honest, no matter how cheesy it was。。。I SQUEALED at the fact that THEO kissed DELIA。 God I wanted them to have more ice-skating moments。。。。。 :(((all in all, good read, not the best but, DEFINITELY, not the worst。 。。。more

Here's my short review:This is a really good book! I was sorely disappointed after reading "Marie Antoinette, Serial Killer" by the same author, Katie Alender, hence i was quite discouraged from picking another book by her, also because of the mixed reviews。 Turned out this is a really good read。 The writing is fantastic, so is the story telling。 Although the whole concept of a haunted house sounds pretty cliche and uninteresting, this book wasn't the least bit 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨。 Yes, the story sure isn't Here's my short review:This is a really good book! This was a book that I picked up at the book fair, since I've always been into books with dark themes and mysteries。 The story revolves around an old house that Delia and her family move into。 However, to Delia's horror, the house used to be an insane asylum。 Whether it was her imagination or not, the aura that the house gives off leads Delia to protest living in the house (as anyone would)。 But in a shocking twist, the house traps Delia as well, leaving her to unravel the mysteries she's not ev This was a book that I picked up at the book fair, since I've always been into books with dark themes and mysteries。 The story revolves around an old house that Delia and her family move into。 However, to Delia's horror, the house used to be an insane asylum。 Whether it was her imagination or not, the aura that the house gives off leads Delia to protest living in the house (as anyone would)。 But in a shocking twist, the house traps Delia as well, leaving her to unravel the mysteries she's not even sure exists。Though the book's back cover gave a summary, I was still surprised by the plot twists that happened from even the first few chapters。 It's a book that plays with perspective without actually changing the narrator, and manipulates your mind into believing something that isn't truth。 It never failed to surprise me。Something readers should know is that despite its plot twists, I would consider the plot to be somewhat of a slow burn。 That doesn't equate boring, however。 The puzzle pieces come together through various interactions and findings without you ever really realizing。 Things that seemed trivial were actually key。 Basically, this book is all about false truths。 It was a really enticing read, and I especially enjoyed the ending that the author created。- Kate, Grade 10 。。。more

I read through this book in preparation for giving it to my 10 year old granddaughter for Christmas, as she had asked for it。 I do not think this is a good choice for her, after all。 In turns, this book is scary and sad。 But worst of all, it makes being dead into a fantasy adventure。 I think there is nothing uplifting or useful in this book for a pre-teen, especially during this troubling pandemic time。
