My review is probably not as valid since I stopped reading after page 100 or so。 Why。。。 because it was too exhausting to read the thoughts about someone who is not only patriarchal, but also a sexist。 I thought I would read the book because he’s actually writing about a girl who is going to be a hero to some point (I didn’t make it that far)。 But the girl is explicitly different than other girls because she “doesn’t cry” and all the female scientists are described as annoying and not interesting My review is probably not as valid since I stopped reading after page 100 or so。 Why。。。 because it was too exhausting to read the thoughts about someone who is not only patriarchal, but also a sexist。 I thought I would read the book because he’s actually writing about a girl who is going to be a hero to some point (I didn’t make it that far)。 But the girl is explicitly different than other girls because she “doesn’t cry” and all the female scientists are described as annoying and not interesting。 On top of that, the social interactions are very hierarchical, without any reflections or critic on that, rather the opposite。 Not worth my time。 。。。more

Delighting。The most impressive is how Pullman weaves together the different plots。

ABSOLUTELY beautiful and wonderful, what a great story
Daniel Wang,
Absolutely one of my most favorite childhood trilogies。 This book combined a lot of philosophical views of the world, science fiction, action, and adventure。 Its story and character depth developed so much that I fell in love with the characters。 This also shows the dark, corruptness of some beings and how they use their power to influence others into helping their cause。 The church in this book is a great example of it, they use their religion to make others do horrible things for them。 Though Absolutely one of my most favorite childhood trilogies。 This book combined a lot of philosophical views of the world, science fiction, action, and adventure。 Its story and character depth developed so much that I fell in love with the characters。 This also shows the dark, corruptness of some beings and how they use their power to influence others into helping their cause。 The church in this book is a great example of it, they use their religion to make others do horrible things for them。 Though this may not be true in real life, this a good example of what other corrupt governments, corporations, and other groups of people with power might abuse their power。 。。。more

I can't really review this one。 It's just so convoluted and ridiculous。 This is a series where my brain will need to process it and then after some years I will want to reread it without skimming it。 It was tough to get through and I'm glad it's finally over。 I can't really review this one。 It's just so convoluted and ridiculous。 This is a series where my brain will need to process it and then after some years I will want to reread it without skimming it。 It was tough to get through and I'm glad it's finally over。 。。。more

A confession: Owing to my toxic obsession with Harry Potter I never read these when I was younger。 The logic of that decision was complex, and I believe probably derives from a fear that they might in fact be “better” than Harry Potter: a thought too horrible to comprehend! (No doubt Dumbledore would have a witty one liner that would whimsically sum me up。) However, more recently, I thought that now there’s a nice-looking big budget TV series with a banging soundtrack to feast my eyes and ears upon, it might be high time to shelve my pride, accept help from Cedric, take my golden egg to the prefects’ bathroom, and see what His Dark Materials is all about。 Overall, I’ve really enjoyed leisurely making my way through these volumes over the last couple of months。 This is a wonderful world。 Pullman is an especially gifted writer。 His imagery seems to glitter off the page in a way which I don’t think J。K。 Rowling is quite capable of replicating。 From a writerly point of view, I thought the last few pages of The Northern Lights were particularly breath-taking to behold, and that was the point at which I became fully invested in the series。 Beyond nostalgia, there’s a lot to enjoy in these books as an adult。 Post physics degree me loved the clever welding together of quantum physics, astronomy, and Christianity。 This gave the story an epic feel of combined mythical, biblical, and high sci-fi proportions。 If we’re talking favourites, I admit I still think Rowling delves into emotional trauma in a way which I find more highly affecting, whereas Pullman doesn’t seem very interested in that aspect of his writing。 After all, it’s not until about halfway through The Subtle Knife before Roger’s name is really even mentioned。 So, ultimately, I don’t really agree with the professional critics who believe HDM to be vastly superior to Harry Potter。 Both series are brilliant things for children and adults to read alike, but my heart will always veer towards Hogwarts and I think it’s justified in doing so。 I own each of these three volumes as separate books。 However, I think this is a series, like Lord of the Rings, which is best understood as a single large novel; I don’t think any of the composite parts would work as stand-alones, and the quality is broadly speaking the same throughout。 Reaching the end of The Amber Spyglass, I feel as though I’ve been on a long single adventure rather than three separate ones。 If pushed, I’d probably say that The Northern Lights is the most iconic and flawless of the three phases, whereas The Amber Spyglass slightly drags in its first half, but they’re all of one piece, and they’re all very good。FYI, not rating this in separate instalments is going to cost my reading challenge ambitions dearly。 Just saying。 。。。more

Quite good, the first 2 at least。 The third gets a bit weird with ideas about the worlds and gods in this alternate world。 Enjoyable for sure

I read the series years ago (as a YA school librarian) and have recently been reminded of it by my grandchildren who are thoroughly engaged in the Pokemon world of humans and their familiars。 And the beat goes on。。。。 Interesting!

Love。 Love。 Loved。 I only recently started watching the show that’s based off the trilogy of ‘His Dark Materials’ (books 1-3)。 I’m now onto the next book in Phillip Pullman’s trilogy of’La Belle Sauvage’ (‘The Book of Dust’ is book #1)。 But I couldn’t get enough of all the books, and I do believe that the books and the show are way past due, lol, but the entire story is so well crafted and full of feelings that we have never really seen from a specific title character, such as, “a mother”。。。I lo Love。 Love。 Loved。 I only recently started watching the show that’s based off the trilogy of ‘His Dark Materials’ (books 1-3)。 I’m now onto the next book in Phillip Pullman’s trilogy of’La Belle Sauvage’ (‘The Book of Dust’ is book #1)。 But I couldn’t get enough of all the books, and I do believe that the books and the show are way past due, lol, but the entire story is so well crafted and full of feelings that we have never really seen from a specific title character, such as, “a mother”。。。I love the little bits of life lessons that Pullman puts into his stories as well。 I felt like I was always learning such a profound yet basic fact while reading his books。 {She shook her head and whispered, "No。 No! Very good - very different - could not decide if I kinda liked it, or really liked it。A world which is very unique and interesting。 A story like that was fun to follow, if not unpredictable。 Characters with depth。 An interesting narrative structure。 A decidedly anti Christian theme。 Pullman really reached for the stars, and you could definitely argue that he made it。Overall very worth reading, I just can't decide how much I liked it。 Very good - very different - could not decide if I kinda liked it, or really liked it。A world which is very unique and interesting。 A story like that was fun to follow, if not unpredictable。 Characters with depth。 An interesting narrative structure。 A decidedly anti Christian theme。 Pullman really reached for the stars, and you could definitely argue that he made it。Overall very worth reading, I just can't decide how much I liked it。 。。。more
