Summary

It's bad enough having a mum dippy enough to name you Owl, but when you've got a dad you've never met, a best friend who needs you more than ever, and a new boy at school giving you weird looks, there's not a lot of room for much else。

So when Owl starts seeing strange frost patterns on her skin, she's tempted to just burrow down under the duvet and forget all about it。 Could her strange new powers be linked to her mysterious father? And what will happen when she enters the magical world of winter for the first time?

A truly magical book full of fantasy, mystery and friendship。 I’ve read the second book of the series, Owl and the Lost Boy, and love that too。 Definitely worth the read!

This came to me as a bookcrossing ray - I had been given a heads-up that it is more a children's or young adult book, but that did not dissuade me, nor did it spoil my enjoyment。 After all, one could say that Sarah Addison Allen's books could be appreciated by young people, or a few other fantasy/magic stories。。。。 and I certainly enjoy those。 This blend of teenage angst and issues (parental separation, absent father, high school shenanigans) and fairy tales which just might be true, was a very e This came to me as a bookcrossing ray - I had been given a heads-up that it is more a children's or young adult book, but that did not dissuade me, nor did it spoil my enjoyment。 After all, one could say that Sarah Addison Allen's books could be appreciated by young people, or a few other fantasy/magic stories。。。。 and I certainly enjoy those。 This blend of teenage angst and issues (parental separation, absent father, high school shenanigans) and fairy tales which just might be true, was a very entertaining and enjoyable read。 I also rather appreciated that here it is the human who breaks the deadlock in a crucial scene, which makes the case for diversity。 It would seem there should be a sequel or two (Owl and the Lost Boy, for starters), but they are not (yet?) listed on Amy Wilson's page on fantasticfiction。 It would be fun to read that/those too。 I am yet again grateful to kiki66 for making a fun new book (and author) available for discovery。 。。。more

I am so so glad I picked up this book。 I was umming and ahhing about it for quite some time but decided to give it a shot。 Amy Wilson completely drew me in with her frozen world full of elementals who seem to have taken on personas very similar to humans in both positive and negative ways。 This tale is full of mystery and visual beauty that is easy and clear to visualise。 I'd say this is similar to a classic fairy tale with a modern day twist。 Would recommend to anyone who likes to be mentally t I am so so glad I picked up this book。 I was umming and ahhing about it for quite some time but decided to give it a shot。 Amy Wilson completely drew me in with her frozen world full of elementals who seem to have taken on personas very similar to humans in both positive and negative ways。 This tale is full of mystery and visual beauty that is easy and clear to visualise。 I'd say this is similar to a classic fairy tale with a modern day twist。 Would recommend to anyone who likes to be mentally taken to other worlds :D 。。。more

Wow! Amy Wilson writes stories that feel like loved classic fairytales! She is a master at this。 This book is no exception-it was amazing! This is a modern-day fairytale about Jack Frost’s daughter。 Owl has the kind of mom who would name her Owl, no dad, a best friend, & a strange new boy at school that gives her strange looks-she’s a normal girl。 Until 1 day she realizes the “fairytales” her mom told her when she was younger & asked about who her dad was-is all true。 Her dad is Jack Frost。 Then Wow! I loved every second! I started on page 50 some yesterday& then read the rest。 Couldn’t put it down。 Such a fascinating world-the real world laced w/the elements & fae。 Even Owl’s problems were a mix of normal girl problems & magical girl problems-perfect! Can’t wait to start the 2nd book tonight! Absolutely STUNNING cover by Helen Crawford-White。 Gorgeous!💜 。。。more

I love the concept of the book where Owl is the daughter to Jack Frost。 Not that many stories out there about him。 It was hard at first to get into the book。 Once I got to the middle of it the pace started to pick up。 I thought Owl was a difficult character to read from。 I know she is suppose to be young and she finds out that she has these magical abilities and no one to show her how, but there are times when she would be so annoying and harsh with people for no reason。 Other than that I really I love the concept of the book where Owl is the daughter to Jack Frost。 Not that many stories out there about him。 It was hard at first to get into the book。 Once I got to the middle of it the pace started to pick up。 I thought Owl was a difficult character to read from。 I know she is suppose to be young and she finds out that she has these magical abilities and no one to show her how, but there are times when she would be so annoying and harsh with people for no reason。 Other than that I really did enjoy the story about the different elements of nature。 I like how some chapters were dedicated to them so we knew who they were when Owl's mom visited the realm。 。。。more

3 🌟 and being generous。This book had so much potential in my opinion and the magic system was great and Alberic was great and that was it unfortunately。。。 。I personally believe the pacing was a little off at times。 The book didn't really have much closure。 I didn't really connect with the characters。 BUT I do love the world and the magic system in this book。I do recommend this book nonetheless because I simply couldn't have been for me。 Personally still doubting whether or not if I will pick up 3 🌟 and being generous。This book had so much potential in my opinion and the magic system was great and Alberic was great and that was it unfortunately。。。 。I personally believe the pacing was a little off at times。 The book didn't really have much closure。 I didn't really connect with the characters。 BUT I do love the world and the magic system in this book。I do recommend this book nonetheless because I simply couldn't have been for me。 Personally still doubting whether or not if I will pick up the sequel。 。。。more

A solid middle-grade fantasy about friendship and nature and belonging and what it means to be human。 It had a slow start and was (for me) a bit long as a read-aloud, but my 8yo ended up enjoying it。

Honestly I'm surprised by this rating。 First when I learned about this book I thought this was going to be a 4 or 5 star-read。 Then I started reading it, and my expectations dropped severely。 I started this two years ago and dnf'ed it after 60 pages or so。 I was sooo disappointed because I was so in love with the Jack Frost-premise, but then I fell instantly out of love because of the young characters and the writing style。 Owl doesn't really have much of a personality other than she's reckless Honestly I'm surprised by this rating。 First when I learned about this book I thought this was going to be a 4 or 5 star-read。 Then I started reading it, and my expectations dropped severely。 I started this two years ago and dnf'ed it after 60 pages or so。 I was sooo disappointed because I was so in love with the Jack Frost-premise, but then I fell instantly out of love because of the young characters and the writing style。 Owl doesn't really have much of a personality other than she's reckless and is beginning to be a teenager, plus I think this book would have been much better if the author had stayed away from the 1。 person narrator (Owl) and chosen the more formal 3。 person。 It just seemed less magical with her as a narrator。 My other surprise was that when I persevered and read futher this time, it started to get better。 I did actually love the Jack Frost-character and his wild, playfulness and the plot got better when she met him。 It lacked a bit again at the end。 But instead of completely hating this book as I thought I would, it is now okay, and I wanted so much to like this one, so 'okay' is a relief for me。 So much potential, but not executed as well as I hoped。 。。。more

3。5 stars, an interesting myth related to the elements and seasons, with a cameo appearance by Mother Earth。 The prose was nice, and I appreciated that she didn’t take the obvious route to a love interest between two of the main characters (tho had they been a couple yrs older I’m not sure we would be so lucky)。

Maybe I don't understand what middle grade is suppose to be。 I might be expecting too much。 I liked it at first, but then it just became so flimsy and generic, with nothing really making sense。 I completely lost interest。It seemed silly most of the time, and other than some of the bigger themes (like wanting to belong, find and keep your family), none of it seemed right for middle grade。 Maybe I don't understand what middle grade is suppose to be。 I might be expecting too much。 I liked it at first, but then it just became so flimsy and generic, with nothing really making sense。 I completely lost interest。It seemed silly most of the time, and other than some of the bigger themes (like wanting to belong, find and keep your family), none of it seemed right for middle grade。 。。。more
