Summary

Charlie Gordon is about to embark upon an unprecedented journey。 Born with an unusually low IQ, he has been chosen as the perfect subject for an experimental surgery that researchers hope will increase his intelligence--a procedure that has already been highly successful when tested on a lab mouse named Algernon。

As the treatment takes effect, Charlies intelligence expands until it surpasses that of the doctors who engineered his metamorphosis。 The experiment appears to be a scientific breakthrough of paramount importance until Algernon suddenly deteriorates。 Will the same happen to Charlie?

I finished this book in less than a day。 Definition of a page-turner。

Depressing but thought provoking。

This felt like a cheesy (pun!) 1950s movie。 Definitely a melodrama。 I liked it, but it wasn’t great。 Women weren’t portrayed positively, at least by 21st century standards。 Lots of cliches。

que livro meu deus, chorei tanto。 não tenho palavras。

I don't rlly know what to rate this book。 It was a lot。 A rlly frustrating read I had to keep putting it down。 There is not one person in this book who is in Charlie's corner and it is so disheartening to read。 The way he's dehumanized and treated like an object, something broken that needs to be fixed when he was perfectly fine before?? and as he changes they still treat him like that ,Prof nemur, Alice, Strauss。 They are unable to put away their selfishness pride and recognize what they did wa I don't rlly know what to rate this book。 It was a lot。 A rlly frustrating read I had to keep putting it down。 There is not one person in this book who is in Charlie's corner and it is so disheartening to read。 The way he's dehumanized and treated like an object, something broken that needs to be fixed when he was perfectly fine before?? and as he changes they still treat him like that ,Prof nemur, Alice, Strauss。 They are unable to put away their selfishness pride and recognize what they did was so beyond fucked up。 I'm so proud of charlie for being able to forgive them and his family bc I would've told them all to rot in hell,, respectfully。 Also the way women are written in this book skeeved me out a bit they all feel like tools in Charlie's development and not real people, specifically his sexual development。 also his relationship w Alice made me feel weird like she was his teacher figure before which I feel like is maternal in a sense?? v weird for them to go from a teacher student relationship to "making love"。 in conclusion fuck prof nemur。 。。。more

I。。。 really don't understand the praise behind this book。 For the most part it's just okay, fine。 Nothing super interesting, or challenging。 What really put the damper on it for me, is how poorly it has aged - with its exact definition of a manic pixie dream girl character, rampant sexism and one occurrence of racism。 I found myself rolling my eyes and frowning more and more as the book progressed。 I。。。 really don't understand the praise behind this book。 For the most part it's just okay, fine。 Nothing super interesting, or challenging。 What really put the damper on it for me, is how poorly it has aged - with its exact definition of a manic pixie dream girl character, rampant sexism and one occurrence of racism。 I found myself rolling my eyes and frowning more and more as the book progressed。 。。。more

I reread Flowers for Algernon, having read it for the first time when I was in the seventh grade as a part of class reading。 I reread it out of nostalgia。 The problem with nostalgia is it usually leaves one with a better impression of something than one originally had of it。 Such is the case with Flowers for Algernon: I was unmoved my second go-around in reading it, largely because the psychological fantasy it presents did not interest me。 I also did not like Keyes’s casual treatment of alcohol I reread Flowers for Algernon, having read it for the first time when I was in the seventh grade as a part of class reading。 I reread it out of nostalgia。 The problem with nostalgia is it usually leaves one with a better impression of something than one originally had of it。 Such is the case with Flowers for Algernon: I was unmoved my second go-around in reading it, largely because the psychological fantasy it presents did not interest me。 I also did not like Keyes’s casual treatment of alcohol and sex, although I believe his treatment of these topics accurately reflects the spirit of the 1960s, which is the story’s setting。 Alcohol and sex were not in the version I read in seventh grade, which may be why I had a more favorable impression of it then。 Still, for anyone looking for a novel that captures the spirit of the 1960s in the U。S。, Flowers for Algernon would be a good choice。 。。。more

This was a hard read due to the many heart wrenching moments in Charlie's life。 And even though I am unsure as to whether I truly liked Charlie's character, I found the classic to be unique and questionable。 This was a hard read due to the many heart wrenching moments in Charlie's life。 And even though I am unsure as to whether I truly liked Charlie's character, I found the classic to be unique and questionable。 。。。more

This book is devastating in a good way。 It would seem that ignorance is a blessing and a curse。 Intelligence, too。 As Charlie Gordon emerges from his retardation and quickly accelerates into intelligence, his perception of himself, others, and the world shifts。 Some discoveries are wonderful - like having the capacity to enjoy literature and science and politics。 Some revelations are abjectly terrible - like finally understanding man's capacity for cruelty and narcissism。 (view spoiler)[ His men This book is devastating in a good way。 It would seem that ignorance is a blessing and a curse。 Intelligence, too。 As Charlie Gordon emerges from his retardation and quickly accelerates into intelligence, his perception of himself, others, and the world shifts。 Some discoveries are wonderful - like having the capacity to enjoy literature and science and politics。 Some revelations are abjectly terrible - like finally understanding man's capacity for cruelty and narcissism。 (view spoiler)[ His mental regression is likewise painful to witness。 (hide spoiler)]Content aside, the book is exquisitely written。 The evolution of Charlie's mental state - as denoted by changes in spelling and syntax and nuance of thought - is extraordinarily well done。 I read the book and listened to the audiobook simultaneously, but the former was more impactful because you can actually see the misspellings and spotty punctuation。 It's a great short read。 Just read it already if you haven't。 Just do it。 。。。more
