This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Esse é o livro mais estranho que eu já li na vida。 Quando acabei, me perguntei "será que eu sou burra ou só não entendi o que tava acontecendo ali?"。 Mas, não, eu não sou burra。 O livro é uma viagem e digo no sentido de watermelon sugar HIGH, bem chapado。 Tem uns tigres falantes que matam e comem todo mundo, umas trutas, uns personagens que não têm um nome comum e tudo alí é feito de açúcar de melancia, a principal matéria prima。 Achei a primeira parte do livro bem chata, parecia que nada aconte Esse é o livro mais estranho que eu já li na vida。 Quando acabei, me perguntei "será que eu sou burra ou só não entendi o que tava acontecendo ali?"。 Mas, não, eu não sou burra。 O livro é uma viagem e digo no sentido de watermelon sugar HIGH, bem chapado。 Tem uns tigres falantes que matam e comem todo mundo, umas trutas, uns personagens que não têm um nome comum e tudo alí é feito de açúcar de melancia, a principal matéria prima。 Achei a primeira parte do livro bem chata, parecia que nada acontecia, mas a segunda metade teve um desenvolvimento melhor。 Gostei muito das descrições do ambiente, pois, como qualquer utopia ou distopia, elas podem se tornar longas e massantes facilmente。 Mas Brautigan fez um excelente trabalho em descrever tudo de forma simples e sucinta。Basicamente, o livro é uma utopia em que todos vivem numa sociedade comunista e moram próximas à cidade de iDEATH e à um lugar chamado Forgotten Works (fazendo alusão aos regimes nazistas e fascistas)。 Os habitantes queimavam os livros antigos e achados no Forgotten Works para usar como combustível。 Vi que algumas pessoas relacionaram o nome da cidade ao sentido de 'morte do eu' ou 'morte da individualidade' (até mesmo o posfácio do livro) e isso faz sentido, mas acho que essa ideia se expande quando também enxergo o nome como uma contradição à própria sociedade aparentemente perfeita, a qual todos vivem em harmonia e onde não há mortes ou violência depois de que todos os tigres foram mortos。 A contradição se torna explícita quando o grupo "rebelde", que mora no Forgotten Works e critica a ideia que os outros têm sobre a cidade, diz "The tigers were the true meaning of iDEATH。 Without the tigers there could be no iDEATH, and you killed the tigers and so iDEATH went away"。 Ou seja, a cidade perdeu seu sentido no momento em que a paz reinou。 Percebi também uma relação forte, podendo até ser uma crítica de Brautigan, com o movimento hippie。 Vejo o personagem Charley como um líder da comunidade, o sábio que todos seguem o que ele diz e comanda。Tiveram passagens que eu pensei "o que diabos está acontecendo aqui?" ou "porque esse personagem é assim? Ele não tem sentimentos?" e que eu só fui entender a fundo depois que li sobre a vida do próprio autor。 Um trecho que percebi quase como uma confissão ou reflexão pessoal de Richard Brautigan foi "Everything is reflected in the Statue of Mirrors if you stand there long enough and empty your mind of everything else but the mirrors, and you must be careful not to want anything from the mirrors。 They just have to happen。 An hour or so passed as my mind drained out。 Some people cannot see anything in the Statue of Mirrors, not even themselves。"Tirando as passagens que são bem red flag (com abuso e misoginia), no geral, é um bom livro。 Apesar de não ter entendi tudo quando acabei o livro, a leitura sobre a vida pessoal do autor e o contexto em que ele viveu esclareceu muita coisa e depois tudo começou a fazer sentido。 Definitivamente não é o tipo de livro que leria espontaneamente (obrigada, Harry Styles), mas estou feliz por ter lido。 。。。more

One of the more interesting reads。 Looking through the pages, one would thing it was a poetry book, and in some ways it does read like one, but overall, I would say it is just strange。 In most books where the setting is in the future, or some place mystical, or in another 'world' there is dedicated time spent in convincing the reader of its existence。 Time spent describing the place, and how it came to be。 But that is barely present in this book; iDeath (the commune in which they live) is never One of the more interesting reads。 Looking through the pages, one would thing it was a poetry book, and in some ways it does read like one, but overall, I would say it is just strange。 In most books where the setting is in the future, or some place mystical, or in another 'world' there is dedicated time spent in convincing the reader of its existence。 Time spent describing the place, and how it came to be。 But that is barely present in this book; iDeath (the commune in which they live) is never really explained。 The characters are never really 'introduced', just there。 The weird things that happen with the sun, the trout oil, the watermelon sugar, the tigers- are never really explained。 They just are。 It really feels like you are reading the diary of someone living in a completely different time and place。 And other times, it feels like you are reading poetry。 Its a short book, you could easily finish it in a few hours, so I recommend the read。 The ending leaves you with a strange feeling, not quite sad, but definitely not joyful。 。。。more

I only read this because of Harry Styles and turns out his song is better。 I wouldn't call this a book, it's more of a bundle of metaphors tied together in a lose package made of watermelon sugar。 You could either interpret it as mirror for the human condition or a whole load of bullsh*t。 The good news is that it's less than 150 pages long。 I only read this because of Harry Styles and turns out his song is better。 I wouldn't call this a book, it's more of a bundle of metaphors tied together in a lose package made of watermelon sugar。 You could either interpret it as mirror for the human condition or a whole load of bullsh*t。 The good news is that it's less than 150 pages long。 。。。more

2。5i liked the surrealism, the structure and the dystopian aspect of this novel but unfortunately it's one of those books where you can tell it was written by a straight dude。 there are TWO named female characters and they're only there for the main character to have sex。 sure, we get a throwaway line here and there about what they do in their free time but mostly, if they're on the page it's just so the MC can tell us that their bodies are nice and he likes their breasts。 like, cool, bro, we go 2。5i liked the surrealism, the structure and the dystopian aspect of this novel but unfortunately it's one of those books where you can tell it was written by a straight dude。 there are TWO named female characters and they're only there for the main character to have sex。 sure, we get a throwaway line here and there about what they do in their free time but mostly, if they're on the page it's just so the MC can tell us that their bodies are nice and he likes their breasts。 like, cool, bro, we got that the first time around, you really don't need to bring up the colour of her nipples in the aftermath of what's supposed to be the most heartbreaking scene。 。。。more

I'm most certain this book has the meaning that you are looking for。 It doesn't deliver one clear message。 It rather is something that you need to find and explain yourself。 I'm most certain this book has the meaning that you are looking for。 It doesn't deliver one clear message。 It rather is something that you need to find and explain yourself。 。。。more

This book is something else, it’s very weird and surreal。 It took me a while to appreciate the book, I still think it’s a very weird book and at some moments I was like “wth am I witnessing right now”, but if you open up to that surreal world you will start to like the book and enjoy reading it。 In my eyes it’s a book you have to read with brain on zero and forgetting everything you know about this world bc it is nothing alike the world from the headpersonage (and you will never figure out what This book is something else, it’s very weird and surreal。 It took me a while to appreciate the book, I still think it’s a very weird book and at some moments I was like “wth am I witnessing right now”, but if you open up to that surreal world you will start to like the book and enjoy reading it。 In my eyes it’s a book you have to read with brain on zero and forgetting everything you know about this world bc it is nothing alike the world from the headpersonage (and you will never figure out what that man’s name is)。But I must say that when you finish it you don’t really have an idea about what exactly you read, which is, I think so at least, the point of all of it。 It’s so bizarre and surreal that it kind of makes sense that there isn’t really a plot。It’s just like the headpersonage just exactly wrote down what happened in those few days the book is about and that’s it。 Nothing more nothing less, just describing a few days in the surreal world he lives in。 。。。more
