As expected, bronze age tactics and strategy have little relevance to my day-to-day。

“That general is skillful in attack whose opponent does not know what to defend; and he is skillful in defense whose opponent does not know what to attack” (66)。 “Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look upon them as your beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death” (87)。

Didn’t think I’d find a book about 5th century bce Chinese war tactics to be even a little interesting, yet here we are。

Advice way too obvious but essential, it's like a summary of ways to act during the confrontation you can encounter in life, in my version of the book there was too much information about context。。。etc。。。 Not needed in my opinion, Sun Tzu's words even opaque sometimes is the real deal ! “A skillful general will subdue his enemies without any fighting, which constitutes the ultimate triumph。 This is known as attacking by stratagem。 Great fighters excel not only at winning but at winning with ease。” Interesting read。

In the summer of 2019, I had this sudden interest in Chinese culture, and so I spent the whole summer semester trying to discover it。 The AUB library had a decent section covering this topic; I ventured on targeting the most fundamental focal points of Chinese culture。 To understand the culture, one must comprehend the history of the people, and thus one is bound to learn about their society, classes, laws, and interests。 Soon enough, the Chinese roots began illustrating themselves, and the impo In the summer of 2019, I had this sudden interest in Chinese culture, and so I spent the whole summer semester trying to discover it。 The AUB library had a decent section covering this topic; I ventured on targeting the most fundamental focal points of Chinese culture。 To understand the culture, one must comprehend the history of the people, and thus one is bound to learn about their society, classes, laws, and interests。 Soon enough, the Chinese roots began illustrating themselves, and the importance of war began dawning upon me when all of my readings converged towards it。 Those people did not merely fight, they saw it as an Art。 The most excellent strategist was Sun Tzu, the wise general。 Upon my third and recent read of his book, I realized how the rashness of my earlier years prevented me from comprehending most of his wisdom, for my hastiness blinded me。 His words came at a very appropriate period of my life, a time where I have come to dearly appreciate and cultivate the virtue of patience。 The Machiavellian prince must master the art of war in times of peace so that he would manage to achieve stability in times of war, an inevitable state of the world (I am currently composing a lengthy text concerning the eternal state of conflict)。 A general could learn the fundamental laws of strategy in less than a week, but that would not turn him/her into Sun Tzu, the same way learning Russian Grammar wouldn't give one the ability to write like Dostoyevsky, and the same way learning the axioms of mathematics wouldn't make an Euler out of the learner。 The art of war is founded on two focal points: there are no strict laws to approach a given scenario, and all warfare is based on deception。 One has to study each case on its own and be creative enough to solve it while deceiving the opposition。 I was delighted to notice the effectiveness of such strategies in Chess and the Chinese game of Go; the key was always being a step ahead while deceiving the opposition into believing that one is 10 steps behind。 If the enemy becomes suspicious, become a mirror and reflect his movements; that will reveal weaknesses, and only then should one smite。A flawless masterpiece, one of the most remarkable books I've ever read。 。。。more

This eternal military treatise from master Sun - read by Napoleon himself during his prime - is a testament to the importance and relevance that warfare has on humans。 Dated back from 5th century BC China, it presents the reader with 13 chapters each describing an art within the art of war。 This book is not only good for military-men but also to business-minded people and entrepreneurs as it presents several interesting concepts such as appearing weak when you are strong and vice versa。 Many rul This eternal military treatise from master Sun - read by Napoleon himself during his prime - is a testament to the importance and relevance that warfare has on humans。 Dated back from 5th century BC China, it presents the reader with 13 chapters each describing an art within the art of war。 This book is not only good for military-men but also to business-minded people and entrepreneurs as it presents several interesting concepts such as appearing weak when you are strong and vice versa。 Many rulers who read, understood, and correctly applied the lessons contained within gained much during their lifetimes, e。g。 Takeda Shingen, Napoleon, Schwarzkopf Jr。, and Zedong。 。。。more

This book is a classic for a reason, however, that doesn't make it a great read。 It's a short and simple read, and a modern version of this book would probably expound on the ideas and reach 3 or 4 hundred pages, but this book was written a long time ago and the style of writing was probably different back then。 Still, it would have been nice to have more detail on the topics being covered and for the author to expand on the ideas more。 All in all, it is a worthwhile read, especially since it is This book is a classic for a reason, however, that doesn't make it a great read。 It's a short and simple read, and a modern version of this book would probably expound on the ideas and reach 3 or 4 hundred pages, but this book was written a long time ago and the style of writing was probably different back then。 Still, it would have been nice to have more detail on the topics being covered and for the author to expand on the ideas more。 All in all, it is a worthwhile read, especially since it is so short。 I almost gave it a four-star rating, but if I was being honest that would have been adding a star because of the influence of this great classic and not because the book itself warranted a four-star rating, so I decided 3 out of 5 stars was fitting。 。。。more

Very short book。 I listened to the audio book while doing chores at home so I didn't really focus all the time on what was said。 The book was informational but the information was not applicable on my life at all。 Interesting but luckily for me very short。 Very short book。 I listened to the audio book while doing chores at home so I didn't really focus all the time on what was said。 The book was informational but the information was not applicable on my life at all。 Interesting but luckily for me very short。 。。。more

I don't understand why this is seen as such a classic。 There are some interesting points, but so much of it is repetitive and too dry for me。 I don't understand why this is seen as such a classic。 There are some interesting points, but so much of it is repetitive and too dry for me。 。。。more

I had a hard time choosing between three and four stars for this book。 My rating has little to do with the principles of Sun Tzu - which are excellent - but rather with the format。 Providing commentary from others tends to break up the flow of the principles, making it harder to keep in mind what is being taught, while at the same time confusing the issue by providing differing opinions on what Master Sun actually meant。I'm sure that the commentary was designed to help the western mind comprehen I had a hard time choosing between three and four stars for this book。 My rating has little to do with the principles of Sun Tzu - which are excellent - but rather with the format。 Providing commentary from others tends to break up the flow of the principles, making it harder to keep in mind what is being taught, while at the same time confusing the issue by providing differing opinions on what Master Sun actually meant。I'm sure that the commentary was designed to help the western mind comprehend the subtleties of eastern thought; the wording suggests assumptions that only a reader familiar with eastern thought will catch (I caught a glimpse every now and again, but certainly not enough for a full understanding) - but adding the commentaries did not provide enough clarity to overcome the difficulties caused by breaking up the flow of thought。 。。。more
