Not as much action as #1, as this volume goes back into Guts' past。 Action is still there, just not with the demons and such that I was expecting from #1。 Story is good though and I will definitely be getting the third volume。 Not as much action as #1, as this volume goes back into Guts' past。 Action is still there, just not with the demons and such that I was expecting from #1。 Story is good though and I will definitely be getting the third volume。 。。。more

Well, the story picks up where the first volume left off。 In a rather unsavory place as the main hero is assaulted by one of his fellow mercenaries, an action that will not go unpunished by Guts。 It's a rather disturbing start, but again these books are not for children。 The book proceeds with Guts story as he learns and trains under the mercenaries and he eventually pays back his traitor but he's run out of the group and somehow he finds his way to Griffith's army where he makes friends and comrades and begins to learn about true ambition and leads his own men into battle。 There Guts spends a golden time becoming a better fighter and coming to think of Griffith as a friend。 Guts learns of Griffith's true ambitions and helps him along the way, but after committing a horrible act for his friend he comes to a dark realization and things begin to fray between them。 And that's all I'll say about that, except read the book。 The story includes more court intrigues and machinations as well assassinations and counter-plots。 We are still learning about Guts past, unlike the previous volumes that took place in the present but it is all for the good as we come to understand him more as a character。Miura is a master storyteller and Berserk is his grand opus。 He creates beautiful art to go along with his beautiful tragedy。 Moments of violent fighting and the gore of battle, are here juxtaposed with romantic interludes between Griffith and the princess he's courting。 Acts of baseless brutality are performed by noblemen while the everyday soldiers act heroically in battle, showing us humanity at its best and its lowest regardless of so called meritorious birth。 A truly epic tragedy continues to play itself out in the pages of this book, beautifully illustrated and told。 I highly recommend it。 。。。more

Volume 2 is an almost perfect masterpiece, there is some problematic parts that don’t hold up to today’s standards, but the rest is incredible。 The artwork is stunning as it was in the first volume and is among some of the best I’ve ever seen in manga or comics。

Exquisite。 Berserk really comes into it’s own in these volumes。 Storytelling-wise, artistically, characters, everything takes a dramatic step up in terms of quality。 Beautiful, artful hyper-violence, tonally different from the previous deluxe volume, but no less brutal in it’s depiction of evils men wrought on one another。 Also fantastically establishes Guts’ origin, his traumatic upbringing, how it informs his relationships to all other characters going forward and why Griffith is such an outli Exquisite。 Berserk really comes into it’s own in these volumes。 Storytelling-wise, artistically, characters, everything takes a dramatic step up in terms of quality。 Beautiful, artful hyper-violence, tonally different from the previous deluxe volume, but no less brutal in it’s depiction of evils men wrought on one another。 Also fantastically establishes Guts’ origin, his traumatic upbringing, how it informs his relationships to all other characters going forward and why Griffith is such an outlier in this world and Guts’ development。 A+ 。。。more

(Zero spoiler review)Ahhh, now were talking。 If you read my review of Berserk volume 1, you would know that I wasn't completely enamoured with the opening to this long running salvo of Guts and gore。 Although, as I hinted at in that review, things are quickly set on a firmer course at the outset of this second weighty tome。 All the meandering and haphazard storytelling hones itself to a finer point, and we begin to get an insight into what is really going on in this world。 Hallelujah, praise the (Zero spoiler review)Ahhh, now were talking。 If you read my review of Berserk volume 1, you would know that I wasn't completely enamoured with the opening to this long running salvo of Guts and gore。 Although, as I hinted at in that review, things are quickly set on a firmer course at the outset of this second weighty tome。 All the meandering and haphazard storytelling hones itself to a finer point, and we begin to get an insight into what is really going on in this world。 Hallelujah, praise the demon lord。 In fact, I was quite surprised with how quickly Miura was able to turn it around, having me go from tedium and disappointed to wide eyed engagement with the turning of a few pages。 It is as if he had a good long hard look in the mirror in between finishing the third tonkabon (deluxe volumes contain 3 tonkabon's) and starting the fourth。 Deciding that it was tie to quite screwing around and really get this mother sucker punching above its weight。 Well, Mr。 Miura, you clearly got your act together, much to my relief, and Berserk volume 2 contains a lot more of what I like, and a lot less of what I don't namely Puck and the rather boring, protracted fight scenes。 Sure, they are still present to a certain degree, but they are far more reigned in。 Miura's art has also lifted to the next level, with some of the panels being so jaw droppingly gorgeous, that you will find your eyes lingering on them, despite you desperately wanting to see what's on the next page。 His quality control seems much tighter in general, with few if any panels being clearly sub standard efforts。 Writing, that funny thing books usually contain, makes an appearance here too, with my favourite moments being the small character moments between the big set piece battles。 And whilst I wasn't a fan of the furthest arc of the 'flashback' (doing my best not to impart any information) as the story progresses more and more, so to did my interest and enjoyment grow once more。 No, this is still far from a perfect book。 Maybe the normative components of Japanese storytelling will keep me from ever truly loving a title as much as the more lauded of the Western comics。 It is often the books very manga-ness which for me personally, holds it back just that bit too much from verging into near masterpiece territory。 Alas, this is only volume 2, and there is a long, long way to go。 I can still heartily recommend it though。 4/5OmniBen。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really am in love with this manga。 I love the characters。 I loved the origin story of Guts, Griffith and Casca and I am just loving what the Golden Age arc is offering so far。 The battle with Zodd, Guts’ inclusion in the Band of the Hawk and the Midland assassination part really prove how good of a writer Miura is。 Even if Guts is young and reckless, humanity starts to show。

A masterpiece of classic manga artwork。 Truly a pleasure to read and explore the gory world of Guts dipped in darkness。 While there are some lines of dialogue that come off as a bit homophobic, this part of the series particularly explores sexuality and the almost hollowly over-the-top masculine mentality of the protagonist。 Some concepts are simple, but the introduction and development of Griffith as a character creates this nebulous sense of ambiguity that sparks quite a lot of sexual tension。 A masterpiece of classic manga artwork。 Truly a pleasure to read and explore the gory world of Guts dipped in darkness。 While there are some lines of dialogue that come off as a bit homophobic, this part of the series particularly explores sexuality and the almost hollowly over-the-top masculine mentality of the protagonist。 Some concepts are simple, but the introduction and development of Griffith as a character creates this nebulous sense of ambiguity that sparks quite a lot of sexual tension。 Still, it is pleasant to see that the characters are beginning to grow beyond their one-dimensional need for violence and killing, so strongly exhibited in the first deluxe edition。 By the end of this volume, the characters begin to seem more like people, and less like stereotypical video game characters。 。。。more

4。8/5Kentaro Miura's great writing and stellar artwork continue to improve in vols 4-6 of Berserk, captured starkly and vividly on the pages of these fantastic deluxe editions。 The story focuses a bit more on politics this time around, but Miura makes even that aspect damn interesting and important to the plot。 Nothing drags here, and the amount of character development is insane。 Definitely looking forward to Deluxe Edition 3。 4。8/5Kentaro Miura's great writing and stellar artwork continue to improve in vols 4-6 of Berserk, captured starkly and vividly on the pages of these fantastic deluxe editions。 The story focuses a bit more on politics this time around, but Miura makes even that aspect damn interesting and important to the plot。 Nothing drags here, and the amount of character development is insane。 Definitely looking forward to Deluxe Edition 3。 。。。more

Second volume covers volume 4 to 6 of the tankabon series。 Much has been revealed in this volume - Guts discovery of who Griffith's true dream, Casca's origin of joining the Bang of the Hawk, an assassination, a small tribulation of the Behelit and a deepening story of and change of Guts feelings towards his reason of being a soldier。 Its another great story that's worth reading。 Second volume covers volume 4 to 6 of the tankabon series。 Much has been revealed in this volume - Guts discovery of who Griffith's true dream, Casca's origin of joining the Bang of the Hawk, an assassination, a small tribulation of the Behelit and a deepening story of and change of Guts feelings towards his reason of being a soldier。 Its another great story that's worth reading。 。。。more

Where the first book takes a delve into the past with its final chapters, the whole of this next tome expands upon that。 It's dark。 It already was dark, but it's pitch。 I knew what I was getting into though。 And it's not without it's humor。Kentaro's art also blossoms around the middle of the book (volume 5), and it's just lovely。 The detailing was already there, but the human form gets better and everything looks more ornate and period because of this evolution。I'm already deep into the deluxe v Where the first book takes a delve into the past with its final chapters, the whole of this next tome expands upon that。 It's dark。 It already was dark, but it's pitch。 I knew what I was getting into though。 And it's not without it's humor。Kentaro's art also blossoms around the middle of the book (volume 5), and it's just lovely。 The detailing was already there, but the human form gets better and everything looks more ornate and period because of this evolution。I'm already deep into the deluxe volume 3。 。。。more

The brutality of the world and the harshness of the characters make Berserk something special。 It’s kill or be killed。 Innocence is weakness。

When I read the first collected volume of Berserk I was very impressed with the quality of the story and the art。 Upon reading the second volume I can say that this is truly a great effort。 I have been completely swept up into Karntaro Miura's world and have been riveted by his storytelling。 This is a first class work that exemplifies everything that a graphic novel can aspire to be。In this collection we are taken back into Gut's history。 We see how he became a warrior, are exposed to some of his backstory with Griffith, learn more about his comrades in the Band of Hawks, and are carried along this roller coaster, morally ambiguous, ride that has all the thrills and chills of a theme park attraction。 There are horrific opponents, both mortal and demon (Nosferatu Zod is freakin' scary!), there is intrigue aplenty, and more hidden agendas than you can throw a spear at。 This is all wrapped up with tight writing and some truly awe inspiring art work。 There were times when I would just stop to examine the minute details Miura put into his panels。 His work is painstakingly crafted and rewards an appreciative viewing。 I can only find superlatives to describe his achievement。As I mentioned in my review of the first volume, this is my initial exposure to manga。 If Berserk is indicative of the finer works in the genre, then I can only express how grateful I am to finally be partaking of it。 This is story telling and illustration at its finest leaving me looking forward to volume 3! 。。。more
