Summary

Inspirational and instructive, this mix of storytelling and beautiful images charts one woman's journey from amateur painter to botanical artist。 Both a showcase for Mary Ann's sketchbooks and paintings, and a record of her achievements, Botanical Sketchbook is packed with advice for aspiring professionals。 Along with firsthand accounts of the joys and challenges she faced along the way, it includes work from every assignment she undertook, from her first attempts at drawing a tulip to the triumphant paintings she made for her diploma portfolio。 Margaret Stevens, President of the Society of Botanical Artists, adds her insightful comments on each piece。

Totally enjoyed this book! It’s a wonderful glimpse into one artist’s journey through the SBA Certificate program。 It’s just what I was looking for。 (I bought the Kindle version。 I believe the formatting might be a bit off (I mean sometimes text and photo not appearing side by side as it might be in the print version—hard to say。 But I was willing to to deal with that minor issue so that I could zoom in on the images。)

The reader is essentially flipping through the sketchbook of a student of botanical illustration, admiring their skill but left without any meaningful guidance or instruction。

No Useful Info on Either Drawing or PaintingAbsolutely no instruction whatsoever on drawing or painting botanicals - just nice colour pictures with some crude, vague sketches here and there。 Pictures are accompanied by paint colour swatches - pretty much the only potentially useful info in the entire book。

Excellent informative journalI really enjoyed this book。 Being new to the world of botanical painting, it showed me the standard and values to aim for, if I wish to take the study further。

If you are interested in botanical drawing this is an excellent example of one persons journey into the subject。 Lots of explanations and drawings。

Interesting commentary about the artist's methods through the process of creating the botanical images, and her learning progress through the course, but not much technical information and definitely not aimed at beginners。 Fascinating to hear about the perspectives of those grading the art exercises, and the recommendations they made for improvements。 Interesting commentary about the artist's methods through the process of creating the botanical images, and her learning progress through the course, but not much technical information and definitely not aimed at beginners。 Fascinating to hear about the perspectives of those grading the art exercises, and the recommendations they made for improvements。 。。。more

I love this inspirational book but if you are looking for a step by step book, this isn't it。This book is a sketchbook memoir of the author's experience of going through a botanical diploma program。 I find her experiences interesting and her art work samples inspiring。 Definitely for a niche readership。 I loved it! Step by step for botanical drawings。 Clearly this book isn't a how to for a novice。 The drawings were still pretty complex。 The author did give tips and steps completing the drawings。 Step by step for botanical drawings。 Clearly this book isn't a how to for a novice。 The drawings were still pretty complex。 The author did give tips and steps completing the drawings。 。。。more

This book is all about set up prior to any painting。 It is a great reference for colour mixing, but there are better books out there in my opinion。

Inspirational and sobering at the same time。 This book shows the work (sketchbook pages and final assignment paintings) Mary Ann Scott done for the Society of Botanical Artists' Distance Learning Diploma Course in Botanical Illustration。 Each chapter contains the brief outline of the assignment, Mary Ann's explanation of what she did for the assignment and Margaret Stevens' comments on the quality of Mary Ann's submission and the mark she received。It is a great reminder of how much time, hard wo Inspirational and sobering at the same time。 This book shows the work (sketchbook pages and final assignment paintings) Mary Ann Scott done for the Society of Botanical Artists' Distance Learning Diploma Course in Botanical Illustration。 Each chapter contains the brief outline of the assignment, Mary Ann's explanation of what she did for the assignment and Margaret Stevens' comments on the quality of Mary Ann's submission and the mark she received。It is a great reminder of how much time, hard work and dedication is required to master the art of the botanical illustration。 。。。more
