Summary

A charming, gorgeously illustrated botanical encyclopedia for your favorite romantic, local witch, bride-to-be, or green-thumbed friend。

Floriography is a full-color guide to the historical uses and secret meanings behind an impressive array of flowers and herbs。 The book explores the coded significances associated with various blooms, from flowers for a lover to flowers for an enemy。

The language of flowers was historically used as a means of secret communication。 It soared in popularity during the 19th century, especially in Victorian England and the U。S。, when proper etiquette discouraged open displays of emotion。 Mysterious and playful, the language of flowers has roots in everything from the characteristics of the plant to its presence in folklore and history。 Researched and illustrated by popular artist Jessica Roux, this book makes a stunning display piece, conversation-starter, or thoughtful gift。

This is a beautifully illustrated book that had been on my wishlist for a while, and took me even longer to complete。 I did not find this to be due to the length of the book however, as once I began it was a rather fast read, more of a refence book than anything。However, it offers concise explanations and theories for the meanings of the flowers as well as a helpful index categorising them by their meanings。 I found it a thrilling read and definitely recommend it, if you are looking to get into This is a beautifully illustrated book that had been on my wishlist for a while, and took me even longer to complete。 I did not find this to be due to the length of the book however, as once I began it was a rather fast read, more of a refence book than anything。However, it offers concise explanations and theories for the meanings of the flowers as well as a helpful index categorising them by their meanings。 I found it a thrilling read and definitely recommend it, if you are looking to get into more Victorian literature。 I found myself able to identify most of the flowers by the end and the explanations for different bouquets were delightful too。 I have always loved the idea of the secret language that the Victorian's constructed, and cannot wait to make use of it now I've read this book。 。。。more

My biggest critique of the book is that I wish there was more information! I would’ve lied to learn about the ribbon meanings that were thrown in at the end and maybe some examples of how the Victorians used this cryptic “language”。

First of all, I didn't even know this was a thing! So fun, I love learning new things, and the illustrations of each flower were so lovely。 Not only did this book break down each flower and their meaning in floriography, it also told why they assigned that meaning and gave you a couple pairings for each that would alter the meaning。 For example: Basil's meaning was Hate, because the Greeks believed the leaves resembled the Basilisks opening jaws, and if you pair it with lavender it's for Betraya First of all, I didn't even know this was a thing! And my petty lil heart loves that shit。 。。。more

I have never wanted to passive aggressively send someone a bouquet of flowers that politely say "you're the worst" as much as I do now。 I have never wanted to passive aggressively send someone a bouquet of flowers that politely say "you're the worst" as much as I do now。 。。。more

Beautiful illustrations and a quick guide to making a few different bouquets。 Wish it had a little more in-depth on the difference in meanings depending on color。

Really cool book with beautiful illustrations! It was fun to learn about the meanings behind flowers and also how they were paired together to send messages。

I loved the illustrations in this book。

Very charming book with beautiful illustrations, I would have loved however, to have a more in depth text explaining the myths behind the meaning of the flowers。 Some of them felt a bit too light。 Other than that, it’s very nice。

“There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance。 Pray you, love, remember。”This book was 50% informative-50% an art piece, and that's the reason why it was such a quick read。Not that I'm complaining (Much, I would have wanted 500 pages, tbh。) since this was like a soft reset for the everyday reader。 I feel lighter, happier, and wanting a flower tattoo more than ever。Crafted with so much love, this was a celebration of an art form that must have brought colour into bleak times。 When you aren't allowed “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance。 Pray you, love, remember。”This book was 50% informative-50% an art piece, and that's the reason why it was such a quick read。Not that I'm complaining (Much, I would have wanted 500 pages, tbh。) since this was like a soft reset for the everyday reader。 I feel lighter, happier, and wanting a flower tattoo more than ever。Crafted with so much love, this was a celebration of an art form that must have brought colour into bleak times。 When you aren't allowed to say certain things, do it with flowers (Ignore how slogan-ish this sounds。)I mean, we're already dealing with a plague, we might as well go back to flower language too and feel the true Victorian vibes。 。。。more

A lovely coffee table book with gorgeous illustrations, including trivia from Ancient Greek Mythology, the Middle Ages, Turkish lore, & beyond。Some of my favorite entries are Hellebore (“We shall overcome scandal & slander”), Marigold (Grief), & Queen Anne’s Lace (Sanctuary)。It tickled me to learn that Victorians sent bouquets to convey negative messages, too, like Datura & Lavender to call someone a liar, or Tansy to say, “You make me sick。” With the trouble I have getting my partner to remembe A lovely coffee table book with gorgeous illustrations, including trivia from Ancient Greek Mythology, the Middle Ages, Turkish lore, & beyond。Some of my favorite entries are Hellebore (“We shall overcome scandal & slander”), Marigold (Grief), & Queen Anne’s Lace (Sanctuary)。It tickled me to learn that Victorians sent bouquets to convey negative messages, too, like Datura & Lavender to call someone a liar, or Tansy to say, “You make me sick。” With the trouble I have getting my partner to remember to gift me flowers on special occasions, it’s hilarious that people went through the trouble to send them with ill intent。 Love & hate certainly *are* related。 😅 。。。more

This book is absolutely stunning! I have several books on the language of flowers including a first edition Victorian book called “Poetry of Flowers and Flowers of Poetry。” I compared all of the flowers meanings in this book to the ones in my Victorian copy and they are nearly spot on。 I’m sure there are many definitions depending on which source you use so I definitely am not going to let that affect my rating。 I would absolutely purchase this book for the art alone and I’ll be looking into pur This book is absolutely stunning! 4/4。 Beautiful illustrations, well-organized, fun to read。 I thought there would be a little more information provided for each flower, but I feel like I learned a lot from the author。 It was fun to look up the plants and flowers in my own yard, and the bouquet ideas were fun, too。

How many times have we read about the lady getting a bouquet from her beloved with a variety of flowers and each with its own meaning? All those victorian era romances definitely have one of these scenes。Floriography was a such a delightful read since I have read such books, and also enjoy gardening。 It was an excellent choice for me。 And the illustrations! All around a great book! Will be an excellent addition to any library。

Truly beautifully illustrated and detailed, I have been wanting a book on Floriography for a few years now after reading some beautiful regency romances including one feisty heroine who adored Floriography and knew them by heart, I was gifted this hardback from my lovely daughter and will cherish it always, thank you for compiling it and making this beautiful book。

I'm so glad I just happened to see this at my library because it was really amazing。 The art is fantastic and the origins behind the language of the flowers was so fascinating。 I'll have to admit there were some flowers that I'd never even heard of before, some that I didn't know what they look like, and some that I'd heard of and seen but couldn't put a name to the face before now。 There were a lot of pleasant surprises here。 I had no idea the buttercup test went back to Victorian Era, for exam I'm so glad I just happened to see this at my library because it was really amazing。 The art is fantastic and the origins behind the language of the flowers was so fascinating。 I'll have to admit there were some flowers that I'd never even heard of before, some that I didn't know what they look like, and some that I'd heard of and seen but couldn't put a name to the face before now。 There were a lot of pleasant surprises here。 I had no idea the buttercup test went back to Victorian Era, for example。 It was good to see Queen Anne's lace which is one of my favorites。 I wish the book mentioned that it's a wild carrot - and the smell of its roots really live up to that fact。 Another one of my favorites is Dutchman's breeches which wasn't in this book but I'd love to know what kind of meaning it would have if it were part of the Victorian language of the flowers! 。。。more
