Summary

The landline rings as Agneta is waving off her grandchildren。 Just one word comes out of the receiver: 'Geiger'。 For decades, Agneta has always known that this moment would come, but she is shaken。 She knows what it means。

Retrieving her weapon from its hiding place, she attaches the silencer and creeps up behind her husband before pressing the barrel to his temple。

Then she squeezes the trigger and disappears - leaving behind her wallet and keys。

The extraordinary murder is not Sara Nowak's case。 But she was once close to those affected and, defying regulations, she joins the investigation。 What Sara doesn't know is that the mysterious codeword is just the first piece in the puzzle of an intricate and devastating plot fifty years in the making。

A landline rings, just as Agneta Broman, the wife of Stellan Broman, a post-war Swedish TV celebrity who the Swedish viewing public saw as an “uncle” to the nation, is waving her grandchildren goodbye。 She answers the phone only to hear one word: “Geiger”。 She immediately digs out a gun she’d kept hidden for years, shoots her husband dead, and disappears。So starts this absolutely brilliant Swedish crime/espionage thriller。Sara Novak is a vice cop who grew up a friend of the Broman’s daughters, L A landline rings, just as Agneta Broman, the wife of Stellan Broman, a post-war Swedish TV celebrity who the Swedish viewing public saw as an “uncle” to the nation, is waving her grandchildren goodbye。 She answers the phone only to hear one word: “Geiger”。 She immediately digs out a gun she’d kept hidden for years, shoots her husband dead, and disappears。So starts this absolutely brilliant Swedish crime/espionage thriller。Sara Novak is a vice cop who grew up a friend of the Broman’s daughters, Lotta and Malin。 She was always the poor friend, her mother the Broman’s housekeeper, and as the narrative continues we learn the Broman daughters bullied her somewhat。 She’s drawn into the investigation and it soon becomes an obsession。 The police only know that Stellan is dead, and Agneta is missing, and are unaware that she was the one who murdered her husband。 But as the bodies pile up and things point to a motive linked to the cold war and the conflict between the Communist East and that Capitalist West, it isn’t long before a nest of international intrigue is discovered。The publishers billed Geiger as the most gripping debut since I Am Pilgrim, and I have to say I thought the analogy was apt。 This is an ambitious thriller, encompassing big themes, not least, the Cold War and its legacy, establishment sex rings and cover-ups。 Sara is an interesting protagonist, while Agneta makes for a brilliant antagonist, reminiscent of the anonymous English assassin in Frederick Forsyth’s The Day of the Jackal。 In both novels the police and protagonist are unaware of the identity of who they are after until near the end, and this is a device which works as well in Geiger as it did in Forsyth’s classic。At the time of writing this review, Geiger is my book of 2021。 There’s still a good few months to go, so other titles might well surpass it, though I suspect even if this were to happen Geiger would remain a close contender。 Either way, this is a brilliant novel and highly recommended。 。。。more

As a spy thriller, this wasn’t my usual read, however I did enjoy it。 True to its genre, there were multiple plot twists which kept me guessing right up until the end。 You’re never sure who to believe, just like the central characters - exhausting! Whilst I’m not a huge fan of the spy genre, I can appreciate the hard work that has gone into this cleverly crafted novel。 There are some shocker moments early on in the story that really hook the reader, but I found the political details and brand name dropping a bit of a chore。 I’d recommend Geiger to fans of espionage novels with plenty of action。 I can see this making a good film。

And why is police detective Sara Nowak so determined to involve herself in the subsequent investigation into the murder of the old man and the disappearance of his elderly wife?Set in Sweden, Gustaf Skördeman’s gripping debut novel combines many different, but interlinked, plot-lines。 Alongside the investigation of a present-day murder mystery, is a complex spy-thriller which has its roots in an historic story which dates back to the Cold War。 It gradually exposes a network of spies and secret agents, all recruited by East Germany during the 70s/80s, as well as ‘sleepers’ who’d been put in place to lead normal lives until it was time for them to be ‘re-awakened’ by a handler。From the start of this gripping and multi-layered novel, the reader is quickly drawn into a dark and disturbing world, one which explores the relatively recent history of European politics, of communism, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany, international terrorism, corruption, both political and personal, sexual abuse and, central to all these themes, the often devastating human cost。 From the myriad small details which were included as the story unfolded, it soon became clear that the author has not only researched this period well, but is skilled at making very effective use of his knowledge to create convincing and evocative scenarios throughout his storytelling。 As he's a screenwriter, director and producer, maybe it should perhaps come as no surprise that his writing has such a ‘visual’ quality。 Although I regard myself as fairly knowledgeable about this period of European politics, this novel encouraged me to do some more research of my own – and any book which does that always adds a layer of satisfaction to my reading experience!I particularly enjoyed the many convincing twists and turns which required me to frequently re-evaluate who could or couldn’t be trusted。 The skilful, controlled way in which the author only slowly revealed the hidden secrets which showed how past and present intersected not only created an impressive build-up of tension, but also kept me fully engaged with the unfolding plot。 The only aspect of his storytelling which I found disturbing was the level of detail he included in his descriptions of the sexual abuse of under-age girls。 Whilst I recognise that it was a linking theme in the story, I think most readers are capable of imagining the deeply disturbing and traumatic nature of this abhorrent crime without any need to have it depicted quite so graphically。I enjoyed the author’s convincing portrayals of his two complex and intriguing female main characters。 Although there’s nothing novel about having a deeply-flawed female detective as a central character, I think the back-story he created for Sara very effectively demonstrated why she was so conflicted and obsessed, and why she behaved and reacted in the ways that she did。 As it’s not often that an elderly grandmother is ‘allowed’ to be violent and something of a baddie, I was fascinated by the elderly Agneta and thought that her character was equally well-observed, although I would have liked to have got to know more about her and what drove her … but with a number of loose ends left when the story ended, perhaps a sequel is on the cards! This story should appeal both to lovers of Scandi-noir crime thrillers and of spy dramas because Gustaf Skördeman combines the two genres in a satisfying and entertaining way in his debut novel! 。。。more

Wow! She then takes a bag that has been prepared and waiting for just this occasion for many years … and disappears, leaving her wallet and keys behind。Sara Nowak is a policewoman, and although she is not assigned to the case, she was extremely close to the Broman family when she was much younger。 So when her colleague Anna calls her to the house just hours after Stellan’s murder, she doesn’t hesitate。 Maybe she could offer some insight that nobody else can … possibly get the inside edge on the killer – who on earth would want to kill a benign grandfather? Because for most of Sweden, ‘Uncle Stellan’ was a national icon; a well-loved, top television personality known by all。 There wasn’t a single person who disliked him or bore a grudge against him。 It seemed like in his entire public career, he’d never set a foot wrong。 And what has happened to Agneta? Where is she?Time is ticking and answers are needed。 Sara knows that they are missing a vital piece in what must be a complex puzzle that they don’t understand, and boy, is she right!! But it’s not just one piece … it’s a whole lot。 One puzzle piece will just be the beginning in an avalanche of unexpected information that is about to come to light, exposing long buried secrets, leading Sara to wonder if her entire childhood and youth was an illusion。The twists and turns don’t stop in this breath-taking thriller that poses many ‘what if?’ questions about the Cold War, Sweden’s stance during those years, defunct spy networks, opinions on capitalism, personal grudges and so much more。 It’s clever, intelligent and sophisticated, with just the right level of sharpness to its edginess。 It keeps you guessing, dangles you over the edge and pulls you back time and time again, leaving you gasping with shock and surprise。This is a 4-star read。 It’s absorbing and intriguing and I’d recommend it if you’re looking for something that will get a hold of you and not let go right until the very end! 。。。more

I enjoy a spy thriller and this book brings the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall right up to date。 The novel is set in Sweden, the author doesn't assume the reader has knowledge of Swedish politics during the cold war and therefore gives plenty of background information - you certainly need to use your brain for this book in order to keep up。 The twists and turns involve spies, double agents, rogue double agents, handlers and unexpected reveals at every turn。 Stay alert people! Very long with unpronounceable place names and politicians that don’t mean much to the average reader。 A convoluted plot not made any easier to follow by having a lot of characters and locations all beginning with ‘B’。 If you can stick with it the final chapters fly by as everything becomes clear。 Not a book I would have chosen but thanks to pigeonhole for the chance to read something a bit different。

this book is ok, i think if you have more of an interest in the past, the war, and spies living in plain sight you may enjoy it more than me, i have a great first chapter that hooks you in, why would a old woman shoot her husband in the head after a mysteries phone call, however after that i felt there were a lot of added extra stories that didnt really add much to the main plot line, and there was not really enough details about some of the characters you you didn't really feel anything for the this book is ok, i think if you have more of an interest in the past, the war, and spies living in plain sight you may enjoy it more than me, i have a great first chapter that hooks you in, why would a old woman shoot her husband in the head after a mysteries phone call, however after that i felt there were a lot of added extra stories that didnt really add much to the main plot line, and there was not really enough details about some of the characters you you didn't really feel anything for them, it got quite dark toward the end in a way i didn't feel was necessary (or at least not in that level of detail) while there were some unpredictable moments most of it was not a massive surprise, overall as long as you are interested in undercover spices and the war you should enjoy this book on some level, while i like spy books this just didnt have enough actual action for my taste 。。。more

Thirty years after the Berlin Wall fell, some of us still have chunks of rock in perspex boxes。 We keep them with other items we no longer value but feel bad about throwing away。 Back in 1990, every gift shop had a supply of ‘stones from the Berlin Wall’。 These were presented to children because the destruction of the Wall was seen as having massive historical significance。 In 2021, how many people remember the political events leading to the Wall’s demolition, or the reasons why it was built in Thirty years after the Berlin Wall fell, some of us still have chunks of rock in perspex boxes。 We keep them with other items we no longer value but feel bad about throwing away。 Back in 1990, every gift shop had a supply of ‘stones from the Berlin Wall’。 These were presented to children because the destruction of the Wall was seen as having massive historical significance。 In 2021, how many people remember the political events leading to the Wall’s demolition, or the reasons why it was built in the first place? In Geiger, his debut thriller, Gustaf Skördeman shines a spotlight on a fascinating period of recent history that is at risk of being forgotten。 He revisits the concept of ‘sleepers’ in the world of spies and secret agents。 A ‘sleeper’ is an agent who is trained to fight and kill in support of a political cause, then sent away to lead a normal life until their handler reactivates them。 Geiger opens with Agneta being woken from her long ‘sleep’ and springing into action。'The landline rings as Agneta is waving off her grandchildren。 Just one word comes out of the receiver: 'Geiger'。 For decades, Agneta has always known that this moment would come, but she is shaken。 She knows what it means。 Retrieving her weapon from its hiding place, she attaches the silencer and creeps up behind her husband before pressing the barrel to his temple。 Then she squeezes the trigger and disappears - leaving behind her wallet and keys。The extraordinary murder is not Sara Nowak's case。 But she was once close to those affected and, defying regulations, she joins the investigation。 What Sara doesn't know is that the mysterious codeword is just the first piece in the puzzle of an intricate and devastating plot fifty years in the making。'Agneta is a unique personality, because very few thrillers feature an old woman as a violent anti-hero。 I found the early stages of her campaign enthralling, and was disappointed when the focus shifted to Sara later in the novel。 At first sight, Sara Nowak is a familiar character in fiction; a detective undermined by past traumas who tries to combat hidden weakness by obsessing about her job。 In Sara’s case, the obsession is understandable。 She works with prostitutes, trying to protect them and help them to escape from the clutches of controlling pimps and abusive clients。 She especially loathes men who lead respectable lives with their families, but think nothing of paying to abuse girls who are the same age as their children。Skördeman examines every aspect of Sara’s experiences as a mother, wife and detective in minute detail, creating a well-rounded portrait of a conflicted woman。 Her behaviour as a police officer is often difficult to justify, and the reasons she gives for her actions are unconvincing。 As the plot develops, the reader begins to realise that Sara has never grown out of her admiration for her childhood idols。 Gradually, those idols are exposed as having feet of clay。 When Sara learns the devastating truth about certain people she loved and respected, her world is turned upside down and she is forced to re-evaluate her entire value system。History buffs will enjoy Geiger, as will those who are keen to increase their understanding of the origins of modern Europe, by means of an exciting story。 Close focus is essential in order to keep up with the historical references。One thing concerned me about the content of Geiger。 It includes detailed descriptions of much older men committing rape and sexual assault on girls who are under the age of consent。 In my opinion, descriptions of this kind are unacceptable in fiction。 Sadly, not all readers will find them disgusting。 。。。more

First off what I was expecting was a generic spy thriller but it was a lot more than that。This book follows Sara, a police officer who was a friend of uncle Stellan's (a retired very famous TV personality) family as a kid and now after he is murdered, she goes on a long journey to figure out who did it。Agneta is Stellan's wife who after getting a phone call where the other person just says the word Geiger, immediately kills her husband and flees。 I felt like this book was a mesh of two completel First off what I was expecting was a generic spy thriller but it was a lot more than that。This book follows Sara, a police officer who was a friend of uncle Stellan's (a retired very famous TV personality) family as a kid and now after he is murdered, she goes on a long journey to figure out who did it。Agneta is Stellan's wife who after getting a phone call where the other person just says the word Geiger, immediately kills her husband and flees。 I felt like this book was a mesh of two completely different stories。 There was of course the spy angle, but there was also an emphasis on the atrocities committed against women, particularly sex workers。 While I thought this would be done well, it felt messy and I didn't see why some aspects were put in there。The spy angle was okay but I felt it was predictable at times up until you got to the end reveal。 There were quite a few elements that were predictable outside of the spy angle but not necessarily in a bad way。 With the characters, I felt that some of them were fleshed out well but others seemed unnecessary and it meant that it was difficult to keep a hold of who was important。 Also, I felt like I didn't like the characters I was supposed to。 I had a major dislike for Sara but I'm not sure that I was supposed to。 I just found her overly preachy and frankly annoying。 I also suppose that when there are books from multiple perspectives there's always a chance that one side is going to be more interesting than another and I did find that here。Overall, maybe this book was not for me。 I don't read a lot of spy thrillers but this seemed lacklustre in my opinion。 。。。more
