I'll start to say that this serie as a whole was interesting, but I was highly disappointed by the open -and downer- end。I've been binging on these books for a few days, and I've been highly disappointed to reach the end in those conditions while I hoped for a neat conclusion。 That said the characters are interesting, and I have to admit that the serie did take me off guard a couple of times with its twists。I think though it was a bad choice to implement also magic in the setting as it held no r I'll start to say that this serie as a whole was interesting, but I was highly disappointed by the open -and downer- end。I've been binging on these books for a few days, and I've been highly disappointed to reach the end in those conditions while I hoped for a neat conclusion。 That said the characters are interesting, and I have to admit that the serie did take me off guard a couple of times with its twists。I think though it was a bad choice to implement also magic in the setting as it held no real relevance in any place of the story。 It might be an element in the next story for what I know, but I'm not sure if I will follow the next serie Ascender。I guess I might look into it after it'll be completed。 。。。more

Outstanding conclusion!I picked a fantastic series to binge tonight。 Anyone reading this already knows how good the series is because they read the first five volumes。 If you're reading this before the book itself, you won't be disappointed。 I sincerely hope we get to revisit some of these character in Ascender。 Outstanding conclusion!I picked a fantastic series to binge tonight。 Anyone reading this already knows how good the series is because they read the first five volumes。 If you're reading this before the book itself, you won't be disappointed。 I sincerely hope we get to revisit some of these character in Ascender。 。。。more

I will always be fascinated by stories that place robots and how we treat them into moral dilemmas and focuses。 I feel very similarly that how you treat (future) machines will be a good test of character similar to how we use how people treat service workers today。 That the lack of respect shows signs of a more negative character。 It’s interesting to me! I wonder if I’ll live to a future that’s even remotely like the one in this series, if robots will become commonplace。Moving on from literally I will always be fascinated by stories that place robots and how we treat them into moral dilemmas and focuses。 I feel very similarly that how you treat (future) machines will be a good test of character similar to how we use how people treat service workers today。 That the lack of respect shows signs of a more negative character。 It’s interesting to me! The reunion I begged for was both the best thing ever and also ripped my heart to itty bitty shreds。It’s fabulous how with this story’s ending, if you’ve had your fill you can stop and be totally satisfied。 Or you can continue on to Ascender! I definitely plan to continue on, but perhaps after I’ve let this series ruminate for a little while。This has solidly become one of my favorite comic series not just because it fills my space, robot, science fiction loving heart but also because of how clearly it’s a passion-filled project。 I want to find more comics like this, original and funky and beautiful in all the best ways。 。。。more

I’m torn between 4 and 5 stars。 I mean, it’s that was AMAZING, but that ending。。。Also, I can’t decide if I want to read Ascender。 I suppose I might as well, but do I really want to dedicate any time to a whole other series?

I've looked this up but am afraid of spoiling anything for myself in Ascender。 I assume it is a riff on "this has all happened before and it will all happen again" but I just don't know!! This series was fantastic! Dark and a bit gritty。 It really explores the idea of humanity。。。 what makes us human, what makes us good, who is worth saving and why, etc。 Highly recommend。

I was right, the first two chapters of this one was a history lesson that explained who the Harvesters were, where they came from, and why they're back。And while all that is going on, the robots are killing the humanoids, the humanoids are bringing in their secret weapon to kill the robots (which ironically is a giant robot), and everyone is looking for Tim-21。(view spoiler)[People are forced to pick sides in lose-lose situations; the descenders return for their final judgment; and then the Gnis I was right, the first two chapters of this one was a history lesson that explained who the Harvesters were, where they came from, and why they're back。And while all that is going on, the robots are killing the humanoids, the humanoids are bringing in their secret weapon to kill the robots (which ironically is a giant robot), and everyone is looking for Tim-21。(view spoiler)[People are forced to pick sides in lose-lose situations; the descenders return for their final judgment; and then the Gnish come in and fuck it all up with the final nudge into destruction。 The last chapter is a recap of the end of the series told by Andy's daughter, one of the now significantly fewer humanoids in the universe。 (hide spoiler)]The series wraps up very nicely and leaves plenty of room for it's continuation, which is advertised in this volume。 Ascender, Vol。 1: The Haunted GalaxyThis series had 6 volumes。 。。。more

I feel mostly content with the ending。 I liked a lot of what was presented in this volume, like what happened on Ostrakon 4000 years in the past and the "origin" stuff。I feel like the whole "warning" thing was。。。off? The Harvester attacks were a warning to humanoids but they never actually TOLD them that, so here we are 10 years later because the warning (that they didn't know about) wasn't heeded。 I dunno, man。 I'm gonna have to get Ascender for sure, though。 I feel mostly content with the ending。 I liked a lot of what was presented in this volume, like what happened on Ostrakon 4000 years in the past and the "origin" stuff。I feel like the whole "warning" thing was。。。off? Before I review, I want to acknowledge that these stories are very difficult to make and draw。 I can see the amount of time and work that went into it and I wish I could write a story this good。 I'm just calling it as I see it。This is a review on the entire series:By far, I think the strongest two things that Descender does are its characters and its art。 The art goes without saying。 The watercolor panels are what sucked me into the series and I think that without them, the story would lose a g Before I review, I want to acknowledge that these stories are very difficult to make and draw。 I can see the amount of time and work that went into it and I wish I could write a story this good。 I'm just calling it as I see it。This is a review on the entire series:By far, I think the strongest two things that Descender does are its characters and its art。 The art goes without saying。 The watercolor panels are what sucked me into the series and I think that without them, the story would lose a good chunk of its charm。The other charm to this series are its characters。 I love Dr。 Quon, which I'm sure is baffling to some people, but I just love how much of a snake he is。 He owns his cowardice and it's incredible。 I also really like the irony that (view spoiler)[he slowly becomes more robotic as the story goes on。 (hide spoiler)] Driller is also the best! I liked him from the start but I loved him once you get into his story。 Ironically enough, he feels like the most human character in the story who goes through the most growth。 Those are my two favorites but Telsa is great as well as Tim-21 and 22 (and Bandit of course)。 And Effie and Andy are okay (their romance wasn't my favorite)。Unfortunately, the narrative is the weakest part of Descenders, which sucks because it had a lot of potential。 I feel that if the series could have a few extra volumes to flesh out the worlds and give the story some time to breath, it would be solid。 The problem is that the world is huge and we quickly skip from one event to the next and before we can fully grasp the world that is laid out, the story is over。 It's like most bags of chips, the bag is bigger than the contents inside with a lot of wasted space。 The story also crescendos so quickly。 I'm all for good fast pacing but it goes too fast: discover the mystery behind Tim-21 - (view spoiler)[BAM the hardwire base is discovered - BAM there's an all out war between the hardwire and the UGC - BAM the world gets destroyed。 (hide spoiler)]。 Also we meet Effie's group the Between (who, being cyborgs, have awesome potential for great characters and theme) and (view spoiler)[BAM they all die。。。 (hide spoiler)]Other than that it was a good read。 The origin of the robots was a great new take on the robot vs human narrative beat。 I couldn't help but feel like this was a bit of a set up for the sequel series Ascender (the magic part is just chucked in at the end with no explanation)。 If anything, I would recommend it for the really cool watercolor art。 。。。more
