Summary

Love, loss, friendship, and the betrayals of the past all collide in this first women’s fiction novel from New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren (Autoboyography, Dating You / Hating You)。

The story of the heart can never be unwritten。

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away。

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve。 Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother。。。only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her。

Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs。 As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion。 Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love。

I really devoured this book。 The bond between Elliot and Macy just really touched my heart。 I love mutual pining but I love childhood friends to lovers even more。 The banter when they were younger and even older just made me swoon。 I love all of Christina Lauren books。 I honestly believe they are an excellent co writing dou。

Jenny

Much like many reading this, every now and again a book comes my way and completes wrecks me。 "Love and Other Words" had me invested in the lives of Elliot and Macy from the start and I still am having to remind myself that they are fictional characters。 Macy and Elliot's masterful characterization is noteworthy and will likely be the most memorable part of this experience。 A great read with an unequivocal ending。 Much like many reading this, every now and again a book comes my way and completes wrecks me。 "Love and Other Words" had me invested in the lives of Elliot and Macy from the start and I still am having to remind myself that they are fictional characters。 Macy and Elliot's masterful characterization is noteworthy and will likely be the most memorable part of this experience。 A great read with an unequivocal ending。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was so cute! I’m so glad CL handled the split of Macy and Shaun easily and didn’t make one or the other a bad guy as I would’ve been cut if they had。Macy and Elliots story of them growing up connecting over books and then building a wall shelf when they’re older is what dreams are made of。

This book gave me all the feels。 First love。 Heartbreak。 Grief。 At one point I had literal tears running down my face。 Such good story telling

I'm really glad I was able to get this book so fast via my audio library! I was surprised how much I enjoyed it and just couldn't put it down! I was hooked and the only reason it took so long to finish is because life kept getting in the way! I loved Macy's and Elliot's lost and reunited love story and especially how they came together。 Elliot's life-long commitment to Macy and his willingness to stand aside while she sorted her issues out was just so swoon-worthy! And her ultimate conflict! OH! I'm really glad I was able to get this book so fast via my audio library! I was surprised how much I enjoyed it and just couldn't put it down! It was truly heartbreaking to read。 But then to watch them get back together in such a tender fashion。 Ah! Solid five here and definitely on my faves list now! 。。。more

I needed this book。 I needed it more than I realized。 It’s one of those amazing books that you don’t realize are going to rip your heart out put it in a blender, and afterwards you have to figure how to function without a heart。 I spent a good fifteen minutes sobbing。 I will absolutely read this again。

This book was cute and light, very rom-com vibes。 Overall I enjoyed the book however there were some logistical issues I had with it。 The secondary characters were not developed at all, they were flat。 The plot was extremely linear and predictable for the most part。 Even the two main characters were developed and I still think they could have been developed further。 Despite these shortcomings, the book was enjoyable。 If you want a light beach read, I suggest this book。 I would hardly call it a b This book was cute and light, very rom-com vibes。 Overall I enjoyed the book however there were some logistical issues I had with it。 The secondary characters were not developed at all, they were flat。 The plot was extremely linear and predictable for the most part。 Even the two main characters were developed and I still think they could have been developed further。 Despite these shortcomings, the book was enjoyable。 If you want a light beach read, I suggest this book。 I would hardly call it a brain buster, but nevertheless it is cutesy。 。。。more

I loved this first 80% of this book。 SO MUCH。 The characters are so well developed and really have great chemistry。The story is about Two teenagers (Macy and elliot) who meet as new neighbors and form a relationship over their love of books。The story goes back and forth (now and then)。The book held pretty steady but turned into a bit too much for me。 I hate romance novels- so the sex scene at the ending wasn’t my favorite (although could be easily skimmed/skipped) but mostly I feel like it emoti I loved this first 80% of this book。 SO MUCH。 The characters are so well developed and really have great chemistry。The story is about Two teenagers (Macy and elliot) who meet as new neighbors and form a relationship over their love of books。The story goes back and forth (now and then)。The book held pretty steady but turned into a bit too much for me。 I hate romance novels- so the sex scene at the ending wasn’t my favorite (although could be easily skimmed/skipped) but mostly I feel like it emotionally exploded a little bit at the end。 Which may be the perfect ending for a lot of people 😂❤️。 And is probably exactly as the author intended 😂。 。。。more

I enjoyed this read。 I would have liked to read from Elliot’s POV and I switch the climax took longer to develop。 It felt a little rushed。

I think I loved this book so much because of the friendship they had before it turned to lovers。 Often times with friends to lovers I'm like why don't you guys just start dating already there's absolutely no reason not to, but with this book, their friendship was so real (as it is when you're young) and understandably unreasonable most of the time。 Reading about their past and them growing up just felt so warm and cozy, and I think that's definitely what I loved most about it。It was perfectly si I think I loved this book so much because of the friendship they had before it turned to lovers。 Often times with friends to lovers I'm like why don't you guys just start dating already there's absolutely no reason not to, but with this book, their friendship was so real (as it is when you're young) and understandably unreasonable most of the time。 Reading about their past and them growing up just felt so warm and cozy, and I think that's definitely what I loved most about it。It was perfectly simple, enough so to be heartbreaking, but not lacking details and realism。 It wasn't cluttered or dramatic or overly tragic。 It didn't contain or need some crazy coincidence or wildly unrealistic setup to try and draw you in。 I feel like I hadn't read a romance book with a pure love that just made me smile, blush, and feel giddy in a long time。 And the theme this book had, with the words, and books, and reading, and wit, and ugh the word play ending - I loved it。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I love some aspects of the story but I really hate other stuffs too。 I can never find a plausible excuse to forgive Elliot’s mistake。 No matter how wasted you were, certain boundaries aren’t meant to be crossed。 You can label it as a mistake or whatsoever you feel comfortable but he literally slept with Emma。 He cheated on Macy! That’s an undeniable and unshakable truth! In my point of view, his apology does not give him an automatic redemption even after eleven years。 He fucked up! A BIG ONE!!! So yeah, the storyline does not sit right with my rational thinking。 I do love about other elements; family presence, heartwarming setup and first love。 Overall, my dislike is on the winning side of the ratio。 Books are subjective。 Let me simply put it this way: this one is just not for me。 。。。more

I enjoyed listening to this one but it wasn’t my all time favorite。 The structure was similar to People We Meet on Vacation (it jumped back and forth between “then” and “now”- waiting to explain what happened to ruin the relationship between the main characters) but the characters just weren’t interesting enough for me。 Also- their relationship felt creepily dependent at times which was 😬 I also felt the big “revelation” was just really sad and traumatic & didn’t quite add to the story。 But it w I enjoyed listening to this one but it wasn’t my all time favorite。 The structure was similar to People We Meet on Vacation (it jumped back and forth between “then” and “now”- waiting to explain what happened to ruin the relationship between the main characters) but the characters just weren’t interesting enough for me。 Also- their relationship felt creepily dependent at times which was 😬 I also felt the big “revelation” was just really sad and traumatic & didn’t quite add to the story。 But it was cute and a quick read, so no regrets ✌🏻 。。。more

This book just took the cake on my favorite Christina Lauren book。 WOW。 There was SO much emotion in this entire story。 I love it being told back and forth in the present and then the past。 This really allows you to grow with the characters as they grow up within the story。 And how freakin' cute to have someone that you just hang out with and read books all day long together?? Wow, I had so many different emotions while I read (listened) to this book。 I even cried, which I rarely do while reading。 I was very invested in it and the characters which is why I finished in just a few days! Narrator is awesome。 Some steaminess FYI。
