'Truly Tyler' by Terri Libenson is a graphic novel in the Emmie and Friends series。 This is the fifth novel in the series, but the first one I've read, but I was able to pick up on the characters quite easily。Tyler is a popular basketball player。 Emmie is less popular, but one thing they have in common is they both like art。 When they get teamed up for a school project, they decide to collaborate on a graphic novel。 As they work together, Tyler is pulled from basketball practice and his friends 'Truly Tyler' by Terri Libenson is a graphic novel in the Emmie and Friends series。 This is the fifth novel in the series, but the first one I've read, but I was able to pick up on the characters quite easily。Tyler is a popular basketball player。 Emmie is less popular, but one thing they have in common is they both like art。 When they get teamed up for a school project, they decide to collaborate on a graphic novel。 As they work together, Tyler is pulled from basketball practice and his friends tease him about his new friend。 His father also has his own expectations about what Tyler should be doing。This is a really great story about finding your own way and liking what you like without the pressure of friends or family。 There are three different art styles in this book as the chapters alternate between Tyler, Emmie and the comic book they are creating。 I really liked this story and thoroughly enjoyed reading it。I received a review copy of this graphic novel from HarperCollins Children's Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel。 。。。more

This book is going to be a hot commodity in my classroom! Tyler is a boy torn between two worlds。 He wants to follow in his brother’s footsteps but still loves art。 Emmie partners up with him in art class and they set out to create a comic book。 Tyler and Emmie’s characters go through some big but relatable emotions。 Many kids will see themselves in these characters。 Libenson is a very popular author and she knocks if out of the park with this one。

Loved it!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved this book! I really loved the comic too! I thought it was great to learn about Tyler like how he plays the trumpet and he has a older brother! I wish him and Emmie won the art show but I loved that Sarah won! I would love has a reader to have a book about Anthony or Joe or Sarah or really any other characters! Keep up the great work Terri!

I really loved this book! Best in the series! If just tied everything together。 Tyler’s perspective is great and I love the themes。 Though about corny, I like the corny。 Good book over all, 4。5 stars。 Read the other books first though, it makes it more enjoyable。 Definitely recommend。

I was the first person to read his book at the library。 So I got a nice and fresh copy! 😂 It was so good! It took me only about an hour (Even though this book is HUGE!!) and I was intrigued! Celia and her gang just annoy me。 Because there are people in my life just like her。 But we just gotta keep being ourselves! 💃🏼 The art was also fantastic。 *4。5 stars*

Not my favorite Emmie and friends but still。。。 pretty good。

This is the first book in this series I have read and I really liked it。 It had all the components that hits the age bracket it is marketed to。 Sports for boys I enjoyed the switching perspective for the boy to the girl。 A crush, a problem with pleasing parents or pleasing yourself。 Relationship issues with friends。 All in all it was a great read that I have no doubt will be a hit in the library。 I really enjoyed the book and will be looking to add other books from this series。 I don't know how This is the first book in this series I have read and I really liked it。 It had all the components that hits the age bracket it is marketed to。 Sports for boys I enjoyed the switching perspective for the boy to the girl。 A crush, a problem with pleasing parents or pleasing yourself。 Relationship issues with friends。 All in all it was a great read that I have no doubt will be a hit in the library。 I really enjoyed the book and will be looking to add other books from this series。 I don't know how I missed this one。 。。。more

Does anyone remember what middle school was like? I always thought middle school was much more vicious than high school, the divide of what kids you hung out with and sat with started then。 By the time I survived middle school, I knew who I was in high school。 Tyler's big brother said it right "and coolness in middle school doesn't matter in high school"。 This was a really fun, authentic about the middle school experience and heartwarming。 My 8-year-old daughter is already mentioning she wants the other 4 graphic novels in this series! She’s the one who rated this & she jumped at rating this 5 stars!Thank you @harperkids @theshelfstuff for sending me this early finished copy! 。。。more

I have loved all of the Emmie & Friends books and Truly Tyler was no exception! I appreciated that this one was from the perspective of a middle school boy, there are not many graphic novels with this point of view。 The author did a wonderful job of capturing the middle school dynamic of the cool kids, the jocks, the art kids, the geeks etc。, and the drama of trying to be a part of multiple cliques or of adding a new friend to the group。 In this case Tyler is working on an art project with Emmie I have loved all of the Emmie & Friends books and Truly Tyler was no exception! Stop! 🛑 Do not scroll on by because this looks like just some kid’s book! A coming of age story about standing up for what and who you like despite what friend might have to say。 The take away I got from this graphic novel that embraced several different story and art styles was that what people are drawn to is confidence in yourself。 It is easy to get caught up in what others might say, but when you let your own thoughts and voice ring above the others, you begin to find happiness within yourself and in turn, you attract those that will really be there for you。

After reading the ARC of Truly Tyler by Terri Libenson I am convinced she is secretly a middle school student。 All of her books are spot on with middle school life and tweenage social machinations。 This one is no exception and I love that it has a male protagonist。

Tyler is the popular kid: basketball star and the crush for many of the girls at his high school。 But Tyler is struggling with the fact that he likes art, and he likes Emmie, the girl who wrote a love note to him that he was not supposed to get (see "Invisible Emmie," Libenson's first book in this series。) But everyone knows Emmie is one of the art geeks and that art geeks and jocks don't mix。 Tyler struggles with other's expectations and his own interests and learns that he can like and be good Tyler is the popular kid: basketball star and the crush for many of the girls at his high school。 But Tyler is struggling with the fact that he likes art, and he likes Emmie, the girl who wrote a love note to him that he was not supposed to get (see "Invisible Emmie," Libenson's first book in this series。) But everyone knows Emmie is one of the art geeks and that art geeks and jocks don't mix。 Tyler struggles with other's expectations and his own interests and learns that he can like and be good at more than one thing。Libenson's books fly off the shelves in my library and the 'hold' list is a mile long for the titles in this series。 "Truly Tyler" is as good as the rest of them and I cannot wait to offer it to my students。 These realistic fiction graphic novels can be recommended to students who like the Raina Telgemeier books, Jennifer L。 Holm's "Sunny" books and Shannon Hale's "Friends" books。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 I am a fan of Libenson and have read all their other books。 I enjoyed the dual points of view, with Tyler and Emmie。 It is nice to see the same story from different perspectives。 I also enjoyed the sprinkling of their comic book。 I think fans of realistic middle grade stories will enjoy this book。

Emmie is back in this book where she teams up with Tyler to write a comic book for an art contest。 As with the other books in this series, the format varies。 Tyler's chapters are Libenson's signature style with lots of white space and smaller graphics。 Then Emmie's chapters are in full page graphic style。 Also included is a book within the book as we get to see the panels that Tyler and Emmie draw for the contest entry。 Middle school drama abounds with friendship, art, and basketball in the pane Emmie is back in this book where she teams up with Tyler to write a comic book for an art contest。 As with the other books in this series, the format varies。 Tyler's chapters are Libenson's signature style with lots of white space and smaller graphics。 Then Emmie's chapters are in full page graphic style。 Also included is a book within the book as we get to see the panels that Tyler and Emmie draw for the contest entry。 Middle school drama abounds with friendship, art, and basketball in the panels。 Different family makeups are also clearly portrayed。 There is a broader representation of race and sex in this new installment that I'm sure readers will be happy to see。 Looking forward to the next book。 Will it be Sarah's turn?Thank you to Balzer + Bray and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

This is my first "Emmie and Friends" book and I loved it。 I jumped into the middle of the series and found my way through just fine, but it would probably be much better if you started with book 1。 It is quite popular in my middle school library and I was intrigued to see how it compared with Telgemeier and Jamieson, etc。 Wow did it hold its own!
