Summary

Don't simply show your data--tell a story with it! Storytelling with Data teaches you the fundamentals of data visualization and how to communicate effectively with data。 You'll discover the power of storytelling and the way to make data a pivotal point in your story。 The lessons in this illuminative text are grounded in theory, but made accessible through numerous real-world examples--ready for immediate application to your next graph or presentation。

Storytelling is not an inherent skill, especially when it comes to data visualization, and the tools at our disposal don't make it any easier。 This book demonstrates how to go beyond conventional tools to reach the root of your data, and how to use your data to create an engaging, informative, compelling story。 Specifically, you'll learn how to:

Understand the importance of context and audience Determine the appropriate type of graph for your situation Recognize and eliminate the clutter clouding your information Direct your audience's attention to the most important parts of your data Think like a designer and utilize concepts of design in data visualization Leverage the power of storytelling to help your message resonate with your audience Together, the lessons in this book will help you turn your data into high impact visual stories that stick with your audience。 Rid your world of ineffective graphs, one exploding 3D pie chart at a time。 There is a story in your data--Storytelling with Data will give you the skills and power to tell it!

Great book to learn about data visualization。 Data visualization is not about using the tools, it is more about story-telling and virtualizing those specific ideas in the most simple way。

I really, really enjoyed this book! It's a wonderful combination of math, ELA, art, and ethics。 Very helpful and practical。 I sort of thought it would be more technical, but I'm glad it was not。 As a result, I have some of my own follow-up homework I need to do - but I wouldn't have it any other way。Because of it's nature, I wasn't able to listen to this audiobook in the same way I listen to most。 Normally, I listen to only one book at a time, and I listen to it any chance I get - driving to wor I really, really enjoyed this book! Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication。 And this book explains complex topics in easy to understand words。 Gem of a book, must ready for analyst, consultants, marketers。

I felt this book was great。 I am a part of many awful presentations with weird graphics。 There are a lot of great examples I am able to use in real life。

Great book for people who work with data or do any sort of visualization of information。 Even if it is just powerpoint。

Eu não li esse livro do jeito certo。 É algo para você ir acompanhando com o tempo。 Consultando e aprendendo。 Não leia de uma vez。 É um saco。

Storytelling with data offers a data visualization guide for business professionals。 As such, it is the perfect complement to the often quantitative skillsets that move into the fields of data analytics。 Before I dive into what I loved about this book, let me summarize it briefly:The book treats the following chapters:1。 Understanding the context: Here it offers a good business lens for quantitative professionals。 Start out with answering a basic set of questions on whom your audience is, what a Storytelling with data offers a data visualization guide for business professionals。 As such, it is the perfect complement to the often quantitative skillsets that move into the fields of data analytics。 Before I dive into what I loved about this book, let me summarize it briefly:The book treats the following chapters:1。 Understanding the context: Here it offers a good business lens for quantitative professionals。 Start out with answering a basic set of questions on whom your audience is, what are they meant to get out of this, etc。2。 Choose an appropriate visual display: Here a library of different data visualizations is offered。 Cole makes the point that you most often don't need more than the basic visualization to clearly tell a story3。 Eliminate clutter: Remove all the unnecessary embellishments from a graph。 Usually simple and basic are less cognitively taxing。 4。 Focus attention where you want it: Learn how to properly use a mix of pre-attentive elements effectively like size, color, and position。5。 Think like a designer: Function over form is what most designer say。 This chapter teaches you how to use effective highlighting and greying out techniques to ensure that your visualizations bring out the information that the audience needs。6。 Tell a story: Ensure that you're capable of constructing a story using basic plot building techniques and splitting the content in a beginning, middle and end and reverse storyboarding。 There's so much that I loved about this book。 First of all, the difference between exploratory and explanatory analysis really brought me into the content。 I've seen so many times that exploratory graphs have been used in presentations to convey stories, causing heavy cognitive load on the audience and at the expense of impact。 However, exploratory analysis is essential as a starting point to discover what stories your data contains。 It's up to you then to tell the story using explanatory analysis。 Other tools like 3-minute story, the big idea and storyboarding your story help out a lot here。 Secondly, I much appreciated the focus on the basic palette of visualizations。 It is often times very tempting to result to really complicated graph types for various reasons (e。g。 to challenge yourself or to show off), but this can oftentimes miss the point。 Ensure that you properly master all the basic visualizations, know in what situations to effectively use which and then take it from there。 Thirdly, I really loved the focus on greying out elements。 I had never properly thought about how doing this can neutralize a story again and bring everything to the back。 Only then, it will enable you to look with fresh eyes again at the data and you can re-craft the story by bringing in the adequate highlights。 All in all, storytelling with data is the perfect toolkit for data professionals whose business and design skills are quite often under-emphasized over more their more quantitative and mathematical counterparts。 。。。more

This book is a shallow overview of other books。 The sections are superficial and don’t fit together。 Everything in this book is unoriginal。

Постараюсь сделать это настольной книгой。Очень практико-ориентированно。 В некоторых моментах хотелось больше универсальности (когда дан пример, но не вполне понятна стоящая за ним концепция), но в целом книга отличная。 И приятно оформлена:)

Great for amateurs, good for the person doing the occasional PowerPoint presentation, few key takeaways for the professional。 From the perspective of an engineer working with software design in a professional setting, I could've settled for the executive summary of this book。I do appreciate the fact that the book is easy to read and that all the facts are backed by proper sources。 But, the things I take with me relate solely to cognitive science; how we as humans interpret information。Wish there Great for amateurs, good for the person doing the occasional PowerPoint presentation, few key takeaways for the professional。 From the perspective of an engineer working with software design in a professional setting, I could've settled for the executive summary of this book。I do appreciate the fact that the book is easy to read and that all the facts are backed by proper sources。 But, the things I take with me relate solely to cognitive science; how we as humans interpret information。Wish there was more focus on storytelling and fewer examples。 The repetitive nature and chatty language of the book, dumbs it down too much。 Even though I'm a person who usually appreciates when the author manages to break down complex topics into something you could understand from an age of five。 。。。more

Good and easy to read introduction to the foundations of data visualization。 This book is probably helpful for anyone without an education in this field。 I used it as starting point to get into the field of Visual Analytics, it's great for that (as a starting point) but does not provide deeper knowledge。Good for: anyone, who wants a quick intro Not good for: anyone, who already has some knowledge in this field Good and easy to read introduction to the foundations of data visualization。 This book is probably helpful for anyone without an education in this field。 I used it as starting point to get into the field of Visual Analytics, it's great for that (as a starting point) but does not provide deeper knowledge。Good for: anyone, who wants a quick intro Not good for: anyone, who already has some knowledge in this field 。。。more
