Summary

The eagerly awaited sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling Oathbringer, from an epic fantasy writer at the top of his game。

After forming a coalition of human resistance against the enemy invasion, Dalinar Kholin and his Knights Radiant have spent a year fighting a protracted, brutal war。 Neither side has gained an advantage。

Now, as new technological discoveries begin to change the face of the war, the enemy prepares a bold and dangerous operation。 The arms race that follows will challenge the very core of the Radiant ideals, and potentially reveal the secrets of the ancient tower that was once the heart of their strength。

At the same time that Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with his changing role within the Knights Radiant, his Windrunners face their own problem: As more and more deadly enemy Fused awaken to wage war, no more honorspren are willing to bond with humans to increase the number of Radiants。 Adolin and Shallan must lead the coalition’s envoy to the honorspren stronghold of Lasting Integrity and either convince the spren to join the cause against the evil god Odium, or personally face the storm of failure。

Bittersweet as always finishing one of these amazing books in the Stormlight Archive series。 I feel I’ve grown so close with the characters, sharing in their triumphs and challenges。 It was incredibly moving that Sanderson spent so much time delving into the mental health struggles of these wonderful and powerful characters。 Much of it resonated on a personal level and just made the story that much more enthralling。Amazing world and character building。 Twists and turns。 An emotional rollercoaste Bittersweet as always finishing one of these amazing books in the Stormlight Archive series。 I feel I’ve grown so close with the characters, sharing in their triumphs and challenges。 It was incredibly moving that Sanderson spent so much time delving into the mental health struggles of these wonderful and powerful characters。 Much of it resonated on a personal level and just made the story that much more enthralling。Amazing world and character building。 Twists and turns。 An emotional rollercoaster。 There’s so much to like。I find myself wishing for a spren of my own to bond with! 。。。more

I struggled to even finish this book。 The first time I was bored for the entire time reading a Sanderson novel。

Rhythm of War was another good entry into the series but definitely my least favorite so far。 Lots of things are done well as usual because Sanderson is a good writer, the world building is at its best and the story continues to be solid。On the negative side it was the first time I've had a problem with pacing during one of his books and this was the first time I didn't like the flash backs, they were fine but I probably could've done without them。 Still a really great book that added a lot to t Rhythm of War was another good entry into the series but definitely my least favorite so far。 Lots of things are done well as usual because Sanderson is a good writer, the world building is at its best and the story continues to be solid。On the negative side it was the first time I've had a problem with pacing during one of his books and this was the first time I didn't like the flash backs, they were fine but I probably could've done without them。 Still a really great book that added a lot to the series and I enjoyed my time with, I already am excited for a series re read in a year or 2 before book 5 comes。 Overall I'm still very excited with where the story is going just not my favorite in terms of pure enjoyment。 。。。more

Where sometimes in Sanderson books I get a bit bored in the middle, I thought RoW held my attention consistently。 I think it helped that we got a break from Shallan for part of the book。 If she'd had more page-time, her story would have felt too stretched thin。 As painful as it was to read at times, I loved Kaladin's character arc。 I loved the way Sanderson wrote his PTSD and depression, which I feel like other authors would have just glossed o I've heard mixed things, but I loved Rhythm of War! It was clear one of three people would be killed by the end of the book, though granted I would have placed money on another character。。。 The Tower Spren being alive and then bonding someone? The second a dead-eye Cryptic shows up you know who it had belonged to。。。。Not much surprised me in this book, so much one could see coming a mile off。。it is also the 1st audiobook I have even skipped forward in to get past crap that was simply too tedious to listen to。When the next is released I will wait for reviews before deciding if I want to continue the series。 。。。more

As always, the last four chapters of this book had a bunch of surprises, at least one odd twist, and a moment that makes you pump your fist。 Standard Stormlight Archive behavior。

The pacing was a bit harder for me on this one, and I didn't appreciate a few things because they read more like pressure from the world of 21st Century publishing than Sanderson's earlier work in the series。 Still an amazing story though! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Weakest of the series by far。 The characters are starting to feel one note as their arcs lurch to a finish that isn't satisfying enough to justify how long it's taken to get there。 Shallan is most disappointing and it was a slog to read her sections, where she was my favorite character in the first two。 The discussions of depression are so heavy handed and cringey。 The listener sections are very boring to read and super repetitive with previous books。 The cosmere level stuff is becoming more imp Weakest of the series by far。 The characters are starting to feel one note as their arcs lurch to a finish that isn't satisfying enough to justify how long it's taken to get there。 Shallan is most disappointing and it was a slog to read her sections, where she was my favorite character in the first two。 The discussions of depression are so heavy handed and cringey。 The listener sections are very boring to read and super repetitive with previous books。 The cosmere level stuff is becoming more important than the story level stuff, to where I feel frustrated not understanding what's going on or the bigger implications because I don't remember his other book series very well and don't care to reread them。 I feel the expansion of the world to other planets is cumbersome and doesn't serve the characters well, but this is feeling more and more plot driven than character driven anyway。 And by plot I really just mean world building。 It honestly feels like the late season of a good TV show, where the writers never expected it to go this long so they've already escalated and played out the interesting character arcs and now just have to fill more time。 Which is odd because this is the most meticulously planned out epic series I know of。 But it's not reading that way in this installment。 。。。more

What。 A。 Story。This one took me about 2 months to finish, while reading other books on the side。 At times I was bored, having a hard time finding the motivation to pick it up。 At other times, I cried A LOT。Ultimately, this story was perfect。 So many questions are answered, and so many created。 Sure, it dragged at times, but I think suffering through some long-winded world-building is a rite of passage when reading epic fantasy。 It almost always matters in the end, too。 I'm not honestly sure what What。 A。 Story。This one took me about 2 months to finish, while reading other books on the side。 At times I was bored, having a hard time finding the motivation to pick it up。 At other times, I cried A LOT。Ultimately, this story was perfect。 So many questions are answered, and so many created。 Sure, it dragged at times, but I think suffering through some long-winded world-building is a rite of passage when reading epic fantasy。 It almost always matters in the end, too。 I'm not honestly sure what else I can say about this。 I love Sanderson's writing so much。 I love his characters, I love this world, this entire UNIVERSE。 I love how he ties it all together。 It is wonderful。 I would say this is 4。5 stars, rounded up。 This book on its own won't ever be an all-time favorite, but this series sure as hell is。 。。。more

I liked the first three better, but Rhythm of War still deserves 5 stars, 100%。 I had a harder time caring for the characters in RoW, but I guess that's my fault because I have very strong biases towards a particular windrunner who didn't have as many chapters as I would have liked ;)。 And venli's backflash chapters I didn't much care for。 That being said, I was still blown away by Rhythm of War!!!! I had moments of my heart being ripped to shreds, I often sat there in befuddled shock, but in the end I always found myself deliriously happy。 I finished this at 2 am。 Did I regret it? No。 Would I do it again? Absolutely。 Was it worth it? 100000 percent and more。 I cannot believe I have to wait years for the next book!! That feels like an eternity! Mr。 Sanderson, would you please please PLEASE do me a huge favor and drop everything else and focus on writing the 5th? I guess that would cause angry Sanderson fans at my doorstep who are waiting for other amazing Sanderson books that I have yet to read (don't worry I'm getting there)。 So nevermind。 Maybe find me a time machine? Then I could go in the future, hide in a library for days on end and read the next one(s)。 That couldn't possibly be that hard, right? The Stormlight Archive has overcome literally every other book and series in the universe to be my second* (:D) favorite series ever!! I don't think it can be replaced。 It's so amazing and it isn't like a lot of the annoying YA fantasy that I'm so tired of。 Stormlight Archive has so much more depth and meaning and I care so much more about these books than any other YA book or series! 。。。。。。。(*but of course nothing tops The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner。 That will forever be my favorite and it will not change)。I am so glad I got into Sanderson's work, and now I can't wait to read more from the Cosmere!! 。。。more

A beautiful, complex story。 I’ve never experienced a fantasy novel that dealt so intimately with mental illness, from Kaladin’s depression and PTSD to Navani’s insecurities to Shallan’s supernatural manifestation of multiple personalities to deal with her childhood trauma。 As someone with a mental illness, I often found myself getting emotional reading their struggles。 Sanderson isn’t subtle about the moral and emotional messages he’s trying to get across; he kind of hits you over the head repea A beautiful, complex story。 I’ve never experienced a fantasy novel that dealt so intimately with mental illness, from Kaladin’s depression and PTSD to Navani’s insecurities to Shallan’s supernatural manifestation of multiple personalities to deal with her childhood trauma。 As someone with a mental illness, I often found myself getting emotional reading their struggles。 Sanderson isn’t subtle about the moral and emotional messages he’s trying to get across; he kind of hits you over the head repeatedly with the themes of struggle and redemption。 But I’d much rather have that than an author who only creates “perfect” heroes impervious to human failings and emotions。It was also very important to me that the singers were treated similarly to the humans: regular people trying to lead good lives but manipulated by greater forces。 In many ways the listeners are the most admirable group, certainly more so than the slaving humans or most of the fused。 I’m hoping for much more of Rlain’s story in the final novel。Finally, you can’t beat the complexity of the world-building。 It’s simply breathtaking。 However, I found a lot of the metaphysical stuff really confusing, and while enough was explained that I could follow the story, there are some pretty wild theological leaps, and I feel like I might need to reread the series to connect more of the dots。 This didn’t necessarily lessen my enjoyment of the books, I just had to accept a little confusion。Overall I’m enjoying this quite a bit more than the original Mistborn trilogy (even though that was phenomenal as well)。 The character development is better and even though there’s a lot of adversity, things are less bleak。 We’ll see how the final book turns out, but this very well could be the best series I’ve ever read。 。。。more

First time reading any Sanderson and came in with half expectations。 Initially the size of the book was intimidating but after reading it was so worth it。 I thought the first 70% of the book was a little slow but the world and character building payed off bigtime。 The last 30% of the book is excellent, not that the first part was bad, just took time to build up。 The beginning was great too, to hook you then it tapers a bit then ramps up to its end perfectly。By the end of the book I find myself f First time reading any Sanderson and came in with half expectations。 Initially the size of the book was intimidating but after reading it was so worth it。 I thought the first 70% of the book was a little slow but the world and character building payed off bigtime。 The last 30% of the book is excellent, not that the first part was bad, just took time to build up。 The beginning was great too, to hook you then it tapers a bit then ramps up to its end perfectly。By the end of the book I find myself fully invested in the world and characters。 I enjoyed the magic system and lore, and the fighting system too。 Everything really done so well。 I usually read faster paced shorter novels but this was just epic fantasy at its finest。 Can't wait to read more and I'm glad there will be lots to come! 。。。more

This was the longest book in the Stormlight Archive series, not due to length as much as plot。 The book had a very unique structure - it begins at a climax of a year readers have not seen, concludes that climax and then starts new plots which are quite long and slow。 While I understand giving more time to the backstories of the Listeners, ultimately I found myself bored and annoyed whenever faced with the "X years ago" headline in a chapter。 Sanderson shined in the construction of an alternative This was the longest book in the Stormlight Archive series, not due to length as much as plot。 The book had a very unique structure - it begins at a climax of a year readers have not seen, concludes that climax and then starts new plots which are quite long and slow。 While I understand giving more time to the backstories of the Listeners, ultimately I found myself bored and annoyed whenever faced with the "X years ago" headline in a chapter。 Sanderson shined in the construction of an alternative species and culture (as usual), the story was just not immersing or captivating。 Partly my frustration may have come from the fact that the plotline I was most intrigued by (Adolin's) was interrupted early on in the book and only returned to in the final part, making most other plotlines feel like a diversion from the 'real' story。 Ultimately the story builds to an interesting ending (although slightly odd prologue) and is an OK book to bridge the series, but was unfortunately my least favourite of the Stormlight archive books。 。。。more
