Summary

Tomie Kawakami is a femme fatale with long black hair and a beauty mark just under her left eye。 She can seduce nearly any man, and drive them to murder as well, even though the victim is often Tomie herself。 While one lover seeks to keep her for himself, another grows terrified of the immortal succubus。 But soon they realize that no matter how many times they kill her, the world will never be free of Tomie。

Junji Ito’s Tomie is a favorite among manga readers and horror fans alike。 It follows the titular Tomie Kawakami, a beautiful young girl who seems to have this innate ability to wrap men around her finger。。 There’s this one thing, though: Not only do they fall in love with her, they also have this insatiable urge to kill her soon after。The manga is HEAVY。 There’s a ton of violence, body horror, and gore, so if you have a weak stomach, maybe skip this one。 That being said, it’s addicting。 While t Junji Ito’s Tomie is a favorite among manga readers and horror fans alike。 It follows the titular Tomie Kawakami, a beautiful young girl who seems to have this innate ability to wrap men around her finger。。 There’s this one thing, though: Not only do they fall in love with her, they also have this insatiable urge to kill her soon after。The manga is HEAVY。 There’s a ton of violence, body horror, and gore, so if you have a weak stomach, maybe skip this one。 That being said, it’s addicting。 While there were a number of moments that felt uncomfortable, Junji Ito’s schtick is to make content to unsettling, that you’ll need to take frequent breaks in order to stay sane。 The art is phenomenal, story is bizarre, albeit convoluted at times so definitely make a few google searches after for video essays explaining some of the stories。 ✨ Stars: Storytelling, art, perfect balance of terrifying and unsettling。 ✨ Flaws: Some storylines are a bit tangled and convoluted。 Also I understand it’s meant to be like this, but the excessive violence against women, succubus or not, was a bit much at times。 ✨ Overall Rating: 3/5 。。。more

a bit repetitive and some of the stories were too absurd even for me

A good 700+ pages of beautiful artwork and great body horror, but pretty redundant storytelling that left me wondering ‘why?’ at many points in the book。 I felt like so much more could’ve been achieved with so much less。 I felt like at least 30% of the subplots were unnecessary and just didn’t make sense and there were so many of them, it got to me mindnumbing around the 60% read mark。 3。5 star because of the quality artwork but exhausting。

Really cool concept, some awesome art and horror shorts。 Although as I near the end things got a tad repetitive。 Can't wait to read more Junji Ito! More a series of vignettes than a cohesive story, so as some readers mention things do get a little repetitive。 Still, there is some really creepy and inventive shit to enjoy here。 My favorites were “Hair,” and “Moromi。”

I thought I will like this one better than Uzumaki。 I was wrong。 The first three chapters are good, but then they become repetitive。 People around Tomie going insane and then kill her and then all hell breaks loose。 It's the same pattern over and over again until the last 3 chapters at the end。 No character development, no progressing of the story。 Also, the ending was just ok, doesn't satisfy me at all。 I thought I will like this one better than Uzumaki。 I was wrong。 The first three chapters are good, but then they become repetitive。 People around Tomie going insane and then kill her and then all hell breaks loose。 It's the same pattern over and over again until the last 3 chapters at the end。 No character development, no progressing of the story。 Also, the ending was just ok, doesn't satisfy me at all。 。。。more

Junji Ito has basically created his own folkloric monster with Tomie。 It's amazing how many ways he finds for the Tomie pattern to play out。 We learn more and more about the rules of Tomie。 We know what to expect, but we never know why, and that's so absolutely perfect。 Ito is a true horror genius。 His work transcends manga。 I would recommend it to any horror fan。 Junji Ito has basically created his own folkloric monster with Tomie。 It's amazing how many ways he finds for the Tomie pattern to play out。 We learn more and more about the rules of Tomie。 We know what to expect, but we never know why, and that's so absolutely perfect。 Ito is a true horror genius。 His work transcends manga。 I would recommend it to any horror fan。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ito's art style is very unique and over 700 pages of it encapsulated in a single tome was something I had extremely high expectations for。 Despite this, I found the story to be repetitive, riddled with plot holes and overall it frankly made me cringe rather than shit myself with fear。 Put simply, Tomie is a bitch who manipulates and seduces men as well as children, disgusting, and bends them to her will by using cheap and babyish insults, making them jealous for her because she deems herself to Ito's art style is very unique and over 700 pages of it encapsulated in a single tome was something I had extremely high expectations for。 Despite this, I found the story to be repetitive, riddled with plot holes and overall it frankly made me cringe rather than shit myself with fear。 Put simply, Tomie is a bitch who manipulates and seduces men as well as children, disgusting, and bends them to her will by using cheap and babyish insults, making them jealous for her because she deems herself to be so pretty, she is, but her attitude put me off, and seemingly bends their thoughts with her looks。 She has extremely regenerative properties and even a single drop of blood would produce yet another body over a short period of time。 If this were true, the entire book would have been filled with images of her throughout since there's such a lot of blood shed。 All the men that fall for her end up killing her and chopping her to pieces to hide the evidence。 Such pieces regenerate entire bodies and the process repeats itself in many many cases。 This is a compendium of short stories some split into two chapters and although the first 150 pages or so were intriguing and hardly let me get some shut eye since I read them late at night, the rest were relatively boring and I could easily deduce the following events。 The stories that were most chilling in my opinion are hair, little finger, moromi (easily the grossest one of the lot) and babysitter。 I look forward to reading Gyo and Uzumaki because I was told that they are much more up my alley in terms of horror concepts which were lacking in this one。 Ito seemed to have an idea, and instead of using it to write a genuinely horrific story that perhaps had some continuity instead of being split across various chapters, milked the shit out of it。 So far, Orange, which I also bought recently is much much better despite being in a different genre entirely。 In conclusion to all this, I only rated it 3 stars because of the art style and the general idea however not the story apart from the few I mentioned which I enjoyed tremendously and found to be very deep and thought-provoking。 What I found to be most difficult was to remember the character names since many characters were introduced in a relatively short period of time and all of them were of Japanese origin。 The reader never finds out what gave Tomie these abilities and the end was very open ended which pissed me off to no extent since I bought the book to found out the origins of Tomie too and not just her presence in the mortal world。 Deadpool or perhaps Wolverine would definitely be jealous of her though slightly creeped out hahaha。 。。。more

Another one of Ito's work that has been on my list for a very long time。 I first discover about Ito back in 2006, Uzumaki was his first book that I read and i think it set the bar too high。 I was fascinated by the way his characters barely has any development。 They’re just there to tell stories and act as a set of lens for us readers to understand how it feels to have extreme phobias, existential anxieties, and terror of the unknown。 Overall a pretty entertaining one for those who loves ero guro Another one of Ito's work that has been on my list for a very long time。 I first discover about Ito back in 2006, Uzumaki was his first book that I read and i think it set the bar too high。 I was fascinated by the way his characters barely has any development。 They’re just there to tell stories and act as a set of lens for us readers to understand how it feels to have extreme phobias, existential anxieties, and terror of the unknown。 Overall a pretty entertaining one for those who loves ero guro。The downside is just that some of the story sometimes feels repetitive and too unrealistic(?)。 Still a huge fan of Ito though, 8/10 would read again! 。。。more

I am in love with these Junji Ito collections VIZ Media has put out。 They are so beautiful。Tomie is an evil bitch and I love her。 Were a lot of these stories repetitive? Yeah。 But I didn't care, really。 Ito's art is so good and Tomie herself was fun to follow, even if there were not many narrative surprises。 Tomie shouldn't be your first Ito but it definitely is worth reading if you like him。 My favorite stories were Painter & Hair。 I am in love with these Junji Ito collections VIZ Media has put out。 They are so beautiful。Tomie is an evil bitch and I love her。 Were a lot of these stories repetitive? Beautiful Beautiful art truly。Tommie is drawn so Beautifully you can see and sense the single strokes and the amount of time put into it。Also the growth of junji ito from the first Manga of tomie to the last one。Of course it's a horror Manga。 It's eery and nothing for sensitive people。 But its amazingly beautiful and inspiring to read with its complexity。 Beautiful Beautiful art truly。Tommie is drawn so Beautifully you can see and sense the single strokes and the amount of time put into it。Also the growth of junji ito from the first Manga of tomie to the last one。Of course it's a horror Manga。 It's eery and nothing for sensitive people。 But its amazingly beautiful and inspiring to read with its complexity。 。。。more

The illustrations throughout this manga were beautiful and haunting, but I really felt like Tomie got repetitive after a while。 There is no overarching story or plot here, and while that might work for some people, it really doesn't work for me。 Overall, its probably a 3 or 2。5 for me。 The illustrations throughout this manga were beautiful and haunting, but I really felt like Tomie got repetitive after a while。 There is no overarching story or plot here, and while that might work for some people, it really doesn't work for me。 Overall, its probably a 3 or 2。5 for me。 。。。more
