Cominciamo con il dire che questo non è il libro più indicato per approfondire il tema del Congo sotto Leopoldo II e Congo Belga， di cui volevo parlare in un approfondimento dedicato su instagram。"Congo" è un'opera sterminata di quasi 700 pagine che ha il pregio di raccontare la storia di una nazione dai suoi albori fino al nostro presente。Mi ci sono avvicinata con i piedi di piombo perché sul Congo Belga non ci sono molti libri in italiano facilmente reperibili， conscia e un po' preoccupata che Cominciamo con il dire che questo non è il libro più indicato per approfondire il tema del Congo sotto Leopoldo II e Congo Belga， di cui volevo parlare in un approfondimento dedicato su instagram。"Congo" è un'opera sterminata di quasi 700 pagine che ha il pregio di raccontare la storia di una nazione dai suoi albori fino al nostro presente。Mi ci sono avvicinata con i piedi di piombo perché sul Congo Belga non ci sono molti libri in italiano facilmente reperibili， conscia e un po' preoccupata che la nazionalità belga dell'autore Van Reybrouck potesse occluderne l'oggettività。Sì e no。"Congo" è la storia di una parte di mondo piena di conflitti e ingiustizie。Ma è proprio il Congo Belga la lacuna。 I capitoli dedicatigli sono quasi edulcorati e sembra esserci un generale interesse a sollevare Leopoldo e il Belgio dalla responsabilità di colonizzatori。Nello spazio di una ventina d'anni， sottolineo， sono morti quasi 10 milioni di congolesi （o per meglio dire africani， considerato che i confini erano diversi dalla geografia attuale）， un dato un po' incerto ma comunque non contestabile e troppo immenso per essere omesso a favore delle varie "fortune" che hanno reso il Congo una terra sì ricchissima di risorse （avorio， gomma， diamanti。。。） ma troppo appetibile agli occhi dei dominatori stranieri。In generale， è un'opera molto complessa， che ho trovato stimolante in quanto per me poco conosciuta， ma gravemente mancante nei capitoli della storia di cui invece ero più ferrata。 Si appoggia su un terreno friabile di testimoni che confondono spesso le date e impegna Van Reybrouck in un intricato grafico di "unisci i puntini" di date e nomi， con la deprecabile apologia per le scelte del governo belga。 。。。more

Dit boek heeft veel te lang ongelezen in mijn boekenkast gestaan。 David Van Reybroeck schetst hier met een vlotte pen een indringend portret van een chaotisch land。 Hij probeert de geschiedenis te schrijven vanuit de Congolezen en in meerdere hoofdstukken is hij daar ook mooi in geslaagd。

A great book about the history of one of the most depressing countries ever。 Violence， sexual asault and corruption abound， the author writes it in a prolific matter and suprisingly nuanced！ I read the book in about 2 weeks and although its easy to read，there is a lot to consider。 I also found myself googling the keyfigures and watching some documentaries on Congo， so at this moment im a PhD level Congo Scientist ;） Great book！

I bought this because I knew nothing of Congo's history， and I read history in order to learn。 I then put this book off for a few years since it never seemed to be the most interesting book on my to-be-read shelf。 One good thing about a COVID lockdown; I got to clear my backlog of books！And I am really glad I had this one。 It is a very good history by an author who is very interested in his subject， and writes very well。 The author has approached this history like a journalist， trying as often a I bought this because I knew nothing of Congo's history， and I read history in order to learn。 I then put this book off for a few years since it never seemed to be the most interesting book on my to-be-read shelf。 One good thing about a COVID lockdown; I got to clear my backlog of books！And I am really glad I had this one。 It is a very good history by an author who is very interested in his subject， and writes very well。 The author has approached this history like a journalist， trying as often as he possibly could to talk to people involved。 This makes for a much richer， much more sympathetic story than I expected to get。The wars of the late 20th century， which are still going on （there's a Wikipedia page for 2020's attacks）， are largely incomprehensible to me， but I have a somewhat better framework for understanding them than previously。The author puts a lot of attention on social history as well。 His descriptions of Congolese music clearly show that he very much enjoys the music。 I would say that most historians' descriptions of music show that they appreciate it， but don't necessarily like it。 。。。more

The book is an expansive history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo， from the pre-colonial era to 2010 when the book was first published。 The author brings this epic history to life by combining the DRC´s conventional historical narrative with ordinary people´s tales。 The book reads like a novel while at the same time it is as rigorous as an academic text。 I was particularly intrigued by the post independence Congo。 How the Belgians， the American in cahoots with their puppet Tshombe assassi The book is an expansive history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo， from the pre-colonial era to 2010 when the book was first published。 The author brings this epic history to life by combining the DRC´s conventional historical narrative with ordinary people´s tales。 The book reads like a novel while at the same time it is as rigorous as an academic text。 I was particularly intrigued by the post independence Congo。 How the Belgians， the American in cahoots with their puppet Tshombe assassinated Lumumba 6 months after he had been democratically elected as the country´s first primeminister。 It almost seemed as if David Van Reybrouck was blaming Lumumba for his assassination， when he says he lacked tact。 On paper， his only crimes were; to the Belgians telling them the truth they did not want to hear and to the Americans， his association with the Soviet Union but his true crime is that he posed a threat to their economic interests in the Congo。 Joseph Kasavabu the first president of Congo must go down in history as responsible for plunging the country into crisis， not once but twice， when he fired two democratically elected primeministers， Lumumba and Moïse Tshombe。 And enabling Mobutu to intervene militarily twice。 I loved to hate Mobutu for his part in the assassination of Lumumba and for being a Western puppet but reading through the book I had conflicting emotions because he was also a pan africanist， banning European names and advocating the Congolese to return to their culture and attempting to eradicate tribalism which had been fostered and nurtured by the colonisers。 His first ten years were remarkable socially， economically and politically。 Thus， I realise human beings are just complex beings and Mobutu is no exception， he is both evil and good at the same time。 The author threw a clear light on the horrific conflicts of the late 1990s and early 2000s in eastern Congo， opening my eyes as to how enormous and complex that conflict was。 I had read from newspaper articles， that Rwanda and Uganda were involved in the conflict but I did not know that they were actually participating in the fighting and fermenting of that crisis。 Thus， Museveni and Kagame like Mobutu are also good and evil at the same time。 No one book can really make an outsider understand everything that is going on in any country or what that country went through but this book really tried to cover the basics thoroughly。 A great read for students of history and those who are interested in understanding the DRC much better。 。。。more

An expansive view of the history of the Congo， mostly focusing on the 20 century。 The book is a strange one， in that it is written by a European author seeking to amplify Congolese voices and reduce to the greatest extent possible the inclusion of the traditionally dominant non-Congolese ones。 The positives of this approach are that the author tries to rely on first-hand interview with the oldest people he can find， providing a first hand view of Congolese history。 The downside is that many non- An expansive view of the history of the Congo， mostly focusing on the 20 century。 The book is a strange one， in that it is written by a European author seeking to amplify Congolese voices and reduce to the greatest extent possible the inclusion of the traditionally dominant non-Congolese ones。 The positives of this approach are that the author tries to rely on first-hand interview with the oldest people he can find， providing a first hand view of Congolese history。 The downside is that many non-Congolese who had a massive impact on the country are excluded or mentioned only in passing， including Stanley， Tippu Tip， Paul Kagame， and Che Guevara。 It does seem that some of the most interesting or most impactful events， are excluded。 The author expresses clear contempt for Europeans in Africa （despite being one himself）， whether they are colonialists， humanitarians， or tourists。 Even though the book is the product of a very interesting research， I find the 'holier-than-though' tone of the book （and the idea that he 'gets it' while other Westerners don't） a bit typical of Westerners writing about Africa， and its a bit of a downside for me。 Overall though， fascinating book， and a product of many years research and travel。 。。。more

Prachtig boek。Ik wilde al langer wat lezen over Afrika， na wat research bij dit boek terecht gekomen。 Wat mij over de streep heeft getrokken om dit boek te lezen， zijn de tientallen gesprekken die de Belgische schrijver heeft gevoerd met 'gewone' Congolezen。 Dit geeft het boek een eigen touch， wat je meesleept in het verhaal。 Hierdoor werd het voor mij echt een verhaal en minder een 'feitelijk' geschiedenisboek。Gezien een aantal andere recensies is bovenstaande voor sommige lezers juist een mind Prachtig boek。Ik wilde al langer wat lezen over Afrika， na wat research bij dit boek terecht gekomen。 Wat mij over de streep heeft getrokken om dit boek te lezen， zijn de tientallen gesprekken die de Belgische schrijver heeft gevoerd met 'gewone' Congolezen。 Dit geeft het boek een eigen touch， wat je meesleept in het verhaal。 Hierdoor werd het voor mij echt een verhaal en minder een 'feitelijk' geschiedenisboek。Gezien een aantal andere recensies is bovenstaande voor sommige lezers juist een minder punt， ook begrijpbaar。 De schrijver schrijft letterlijk op wat zij vertellen， soms tot het onrealistische toe。 Het zorgt er voor mij juist voor dat er een mooi beeld wordt gecreëerd van de Congoleze individu op zich。 Er passeren personen met prachtige en bijzondere verhalen de revue。Het boek neemt je mee vanaf 1870 tot nu。 Van de tijd onder Leopold II， de verschillende binnen- en buitenlands gevoerde oorlogen， de onafhankelijkheid en de （poging tot） democratie。 Ik was op het gebied van de geschiedenis van Congo een totale leek。 Voor mij heeft dit boek een helder beeld geschetst van de ontwikkeling van het land Congo in de afgelopen 150 jaar。 Er zijn een aantal vraagtekens gezet bij de objectiviteit van de schrijver， een Belg。 België zou er in het boek in enkele gevallen 'te makkelijk' mee weg komen， of er zou niet uitgebreid genoeg over de rol van België geschreven zijn。 Dit was voor mij in ieder geval niet storend。Geïnteresseerd in de geschiedenis van een （wellicht nog steeds） verscheurd Afrikaans land， gevuld met pakkende dialogen met de bevolking？ Dit is je boek！ 。。。more

Een boek dat elke Belg zou moeten lezen al was het maar omdat we over de inhoud van hoofdstukken 1 en 2 nooit op school hebben geleerd。 Een vlot geschreven historiek doorspekt met gepaste anekdotes en interessante persoonlijke inzichten helpen de lezer de soms nogal wat langdradige passages beter verteren。
