Summary

He saw the darkness in her magic。 She saw the magic in his darkness。

Wren Southerland’s reckless use of magic has cost her everything: she’s been dismissed from the Queen’s Guard and separated from her best friend—the girl she loves。 So when a letter arrives from a reclusive lord, asking Wren to come to his estate, Colwick Hall, to cure his servant from a mysterious illness, she seizes her chance to redeem herself。

The mansion is crumbling, icy winds haunt the caved-in halls, and her eccentric host forbids her from leaving her room after dark。 Worse, Wren’s patient isn’t a servant at all but Hal Cavendish, the infamous Reaper of Vesria and her kingdom’s sworn enemy。 Hal also came to Colwick Hall for redemption, but the secrets in the estate may lead to both of their deaths。

With sinister forces at work, Wren and Hal realize they’ll have to join together if they have any hope of saving their kingdoms。 But as Wren circles closer to the nefarious truth behind Hal’s illness, they realize they have no escape from the monsters within the mansion。 All they have is each other, and a startling desire that could be their downfall。

Allison Saft’s Down Comes the Night is a snow-drenched romantic fantasy that keeps you racing through the pages long into the night。

Love makes monsters of us all。

I almost DNF'ed with only 50 pages to go because I really couldn't bring myself to care about 2 dimensional Wren and Hal and their 2 dimensional relationship (and complete lack of chemistry) and their 2 dimensional problems。 I almost DNF'ed with only 50 pages to go because I really couldn't bring myself to care about 2 dimensional Wren and Hal and their 2 dimensional relationship (and complete lack of chemistry) and their 2 dimensional problems。 。。。more

This book sounded absolutely fascinating and up my alley - a young healer accepts a position at a remote manor, becomes snowed in, and has to solve the mystery of the strange noises, illnesses, and disappearances surrounding the manor, all while falling in love with her patient, AND 3 out of 4 blurbs used the word gothic - YES PLEASE!Unfortunately, this book didn't work for me, mostly because I couldn't stand the main character。 I did not like Wren, at all。 Wren drove me nuts because she makes e This book sounded absolutely fascinating and up my alley - a young healer accepts a position at a remote manor, becomes snowed in, and has to solve the mystery of the strange noises, illnesses, and disappearances surrounding the manor, all while falling in love with her patient, AND 3 out of 4 blurbs used the word gothic - YES PLEASE!Unfortunately, this book didn't work for me, mostly because I couldn't stand the main character。 I did not like Wren, at all。 Wren drove me nuts because she makes extremely dumb decisions right from the very beginning of the book (and continues to make them throughout) and has absolutely no respect for authority, rules or consequences, yet when her complete disrespect for these things could actually make a difference in a good way she is suddenly afraid of some unspecified consequences of breaking a contract she signed saying she won't leave her room after midnight, enter the east wing, or leave the manor without explicit permission。 She still manages to make a ton of dumb, horrid decisions though, even with her sudden fear of consequences。 So instead of being a spunky heroine who follows her heart and her own moral compass, I just found her irritating。 There's also quite of bit of politics in this book, which has to do with the mystery, but I feel like it's worth mentioning because just reading the jacket copy I thought the description made this seem like a very atmospheric gothic novel and therefore I expected a certain type of mystery (though now in hindsight I recognize the allusions in the book description)。This book has some fantastic gothic elements, and the magic aspect was an interesting spin on the genre。 If teenage angst is your thing and you don't mind heroines who make idiotic decisions to serve the story, you may like this book。 I just couldn't get past my dislike of Wren (and honestly Hal too)。 。。。more

Overall, I really liked this story。What I liked: the plot。 I enjoyed the little mystery even if o guessed it right early。 The descriptions of the estate, Colwick Hall。 Hal Cavendish; I just loved him。 Gotta love the broody and mysterious “bad boy。” Also, I thought the romance was huge and done well。 It definitely read enemies to lovers。 I also like that it wrapped everything pretty well and left some things open。 I did like the end。 I liked how relationships and friendships were mended and there Overall, I really liked this story。What I liked: the plot。 I enjoyed the little mystery even if o guessed it right early。 The descriptions of the estate, Colwick Hall。 Hal Cavendish; I just loved him。 Gotta love the broody and mysterious “bad boy。” Also, I thought the romance was huge and done well。 It definitely read enemies to lovers。 I also like that it wrapped everything pretty well and left some things open。 I did like the end。 I liked how relationships and friendships were mended and there was def poetic justice for a certain character I hated。What I didn’t like: Wren crying allll the time。 She literally had tears in her eyes about 80% of the time。 Her character annoyed me at times, though overall。。 I did like her。 I questioned a lot of her decisions though。 The magic Wren had confused me a bit; I had a lot of questions regarding it。 What happens if her magic runs out? Can it run out? With proper rest, will it come back? How does it completely run out? I wish that was explained more。 I also think it would’ve been cool to have a map。。 just a simple one。 One other things I wish the gothic elements were explored more。 It had a decent amount in the beginning/middle。。 I just wish it were a bit creepier。 I do recommend if you like a semi gothic enemies to lovers romance with some mystery involved。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 What I liked: • The winter vibes of Colwick Hall were perfect (and I love the cover)• The main character, Wren, is rather idiotic。 She has a good heart and is really good at healing, but she’s not great in the common sense department。 It’s frustrating but endearing。 • Openly bisexual Wren! Queer person with depths Una! This book means so much to me。 I cannot explain how strongly I feel for this story and its characters; especially Wren Southerland。 Her strong sense of empathy and frustrating emotions and sensitivity are all too relatable。 I found myself in Wren, and now, I don’t know what I would do without the comfort of her character。 There is not a single flaw in this book and it has become an instant favorite。 If you love Nina and Matthias from Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology like I do, you will love This book means so much to me。 I cannot explain how strongly I feel for this story and its characters; especially Wren Southerland。 Her strong sense of empathy and frustrating emotions and sensitivity are all too relatable。 I found myself in Wren, and now, I don’t know what I would do without the comfort of her character。 There is not a single flaw in this book and it has become an instant favorite。 If you love Nina and Matthias from Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology like I do, you will love this book。 I swear by it。 I can already tell that this book is underrated。 I found myself in Wren, and I hope that other readers come across this beautiful book and are able to find themselves in her, too。 “A terrible fate, indeed, to be your prisoner。” 。。。more

While the set up was good, the plot started going flat mid way through the book but the characters and their story kept me reading to a satisfied ending。

WOW。 I’ve never read about anything like it before and it was so cool!!!!! Another set of veins that carry your magic? Loved that detail! Did I have to search up a hilarious amount of medical terms though? Sure。 But it’s nice to know she knows her stuff😂😂There was also something so familiar about this story。 Various different aspects reminded me of a lot of books I used to enjoy when I was younger and it was just so nice to finally find another book that had me hooked from start to finish and never wanting it to end! So yeah, 5 stars for all the reasons I listed above。 You are allowed to enjoy a book purely because you enjoy it。 I need to keep telling myself to not feel guilty about throwing out so many 5 stars。 We don’t always have to analyse and scrutinise every tiny detail! I was pretty excited to read this book and it was honestly an easy and joyful read。I really enjoyed the romance in this book, and I personally am someone who hates love triangles but I think it was done pretty effectively in this book。 On that note, the slow burn romance between Wren and Hal was amazing (mainly because I'm officially a Hal simp)。 He was such a little babe and I absolutely adored how he trusted and loved Wren, and was unapologetic in displaying his affection for her。I can't say t I was pretty excited to read this book and it was honestly an easy and joyful read。I really enjoyed the romance in this book, and I personally am someone who hates love triangles but I think it was done pretty effectively in this book。 On that note, the slow burn romance between Wren and Hal was amazing (mainly because I'm officially a Hal simp)。 He was such a little babe and I absolutely adored how he trusted and loved Wren, and was unapologetic in displaying his affection for her。I can't say that anything surprised me in this novel if I'm gonna be honest。 There were no plot twists or anything of that sort but I still enjoyed it。 In the beginning, it was a bit slow, but the way I would imagine the places that Wren would visit were pretty fun, even though there's evidently a lack of world-building。I can see why a lot of people didn't enjoy this book, per se。 The enemies-to-lovers isn't an actual trope present in this book, and a lot of the plot devices and adventures that were described to be impossible and difficult were solved somewhat quickly? But besides that I still enjoyed reading it。 。。。more

I give this book 2 1/2 stars。 This was an anticipated debut read, which fell short of my expectations。 I was expecting this gothic romance, that would have Crimson Peak vibes, and instead got something that felt messy。 The book takes a long time to build up, and then a long time to wind down, yet gives you every answer along the way。 I literally never once feared for the safety of Wren or Hal, there were no twists that made me go, “What!?! I didn’t see that coming!!” Because I did see that coming, and I didn’t even get a red herring to make me think the villain could be anyone other than who it was。 The book was entertaining enough to complete, partly because I think I was waiting for big reveals to happen, but then got disappointed when they didn’t。 Everything that Wren did felt completely unearned; her relationship with Hal, her literally going downstairs and then coming back to have the cure ready to go (like yes, she did work to find the cure, but the way it’s written, made it feel too easy), and figuring out who the big bad was。 The book easily could have been a hundred or so pages shorter, with everything occurring in the same setting, and not going back to Knockaine。 They could have confronted the villain at Colwick Hall easily, every player was there, and it would have been a cleaner ending。 There also would have been resolve with the mystery at Colwick Hall, Hannah should have gotten a completed arc, instead she’s just left in a decaying mansion, while our other two characters go off into the sunset, supposedly。 Hard to tell when their countries were on the verge of going back to war with each other。 Here are few other things I didn’t enjoy about the book: the war background, the magic, and the enemies to lovers relationship。 I felt like this should have been the gothic mystery it wanted to be, and kept to a smaller stage, without so many players。 The magic system was practically non-existent, we don’t know what Hal’s power does, other than freeze people with fear(?), and cause them to go brain dead(?)。 Wren’s power we sort of understand, but only because we’re in her POV, otherwise it was kind of confusing。 She talks about magic burnout, and even experiences it, but then she goes if you use it too much, you may not be able to get it back, but that was like at the end of the book, so I never knew to be worried that she would deplete her well of magic。 Onto the romance。 Hal and Wren are supposed to be enemies, but I never got that, even though she went on and on about how he is her nation’s greatest threat。 I also never really felt like their relationship hit any milestones of showing them beginning to understand each other, and learn to trust, and eventually fall in love。 The author gives such a short timeline for them to do this all in too, two weeks, to figure out this mystery of the missing comrades, to cure Hal, and to fall in love too。 。。。more

I may be in a place where I just don't want to get into fantasy YA because this felt entirely way too long and yet somehow the ending still felt incredibly rushed。 The magic system was interesting, but felt incomplete as though the author thought they'd built a solid framework for the magic to "make sense" but it didn't feel like that to me as a reader。 The characters on the "good" side seemed a lot more forgiving than felt was warranted for the story, so I felt it was more of a naïve girl falli I may be in a place where I just don't want to get into fantasy YA because this felt entirely way too long and yet somehow the ending still felt incredibly rushed。 The magic system was interesting, but felt incomplete as though the author thought they'd built a solid framework for the magic to "make sense" but it didn't feel like that to me as a reader。 The characters on the "good" side seemed a lot more forgiving than felt was warranted for the story, so I felt it was more of a naïve girl falling for the bad boy who had decided to stop being bad, so we're going to forgive all the people he murdered situation。 If you're into melodramatic fantasy with a simplistic (yet somehow complicated in the background) magic system, this might be the book for you。 I wanted more from it。 。。。more

Like, give me more Wren and Hal!Overall, I believe this is a successful debut and I can't wait to read more from Allison Saft。 And now I understand when the author dedicated this book "to all the girls who feel too much"。 Although I don't really fall into the category because I'm more of the avoidant type。 Feeling who? LMFAOOO but if you are one of those, I believe you would relate to Wren and feel heard。 。。。more
