Summary

Family, Friends, Boys。。。Dental Drama?!
A True Story

Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader。 But one night after Girls Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth。 What follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached(!)。 And on top of all that, there's still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly。 Raina's story takes us from middle school to high school, where she discovers her artistic voice, finds out what true friendship really means, and where she can finally。。。smile。

If you are looking for good and real story about a tween/young teen, this is a 5 star。 I wanted a bit more depth。 I enjoy Raina's storytelling style though。 If you are looking for good and real story about a tween/young teen, this is a 5 star。 I wanted a bit more depth。 I enjoy Raina's storytelling style though。 。。。more

This graphic novel has been one of my favorites for a very long time。 When I was younger, I was super awkward, quirky (still am) and I never fit in with anyone。 This book made me feel less alone in life, and like Raina, I eventually found where I'm supposed to be, and I'm about to begin a new chapter in my life feeling a lot more confident than I would've been had I never found shelter in this story。 This graphic novel has been one of my favorites for a very long time。 When I was younger, I was super awkward, quirky (still am) and I never fit in with anyone。 This book made me feel less alone in life, and like Raina, I eventually found where I'm supposed to be, and I'm about to begin a new chapter in my life feeling a lot more confident than I would've been had I never found shelter in this story。 。。。more

I was going to rate this a 3/5, but realized that would be my rating as an adult reading the book。 When I really considered how this book would hold up for its intended audience, I bumped up my rating to a 4。 Was I left saying "Wow!" after reading this one? Not really。 But do I see why kids are obsessed with Raina Telgemeier? You betcha。 Her characters feel real (because they are)。 The tensions between friends and navigating tweenhood speak to a middle grade age group perfectly。 The span of time I was going to rate this a 3/5, but realized that would be my rating as an adult reading the book。 When I really considered how this book would hold up for its intended audience, I bumped up my rating to a 4。 Was I left saying "Wow!" after reading this one? I didn’t really like this book。 It would be good for kids to read but it was just a little boring to me。 She talked about the relationship and things she went through as a teenager。 She also explained and talked about the things that were important to her。

As a child who went through a lot of dental trauma this book was very relatable。 A fast but interesting read, I would recommend。 i am happy that the protagonist found new friends as her original friend group was not very nice。 This book also highlighted ideas on growing pains and learning to love yourself。

A great graphic novel for pre-teens, teens and adults that need help remembering what it feels like to be a teenager。 It does a good job illustrating the awkwardness and stresses of teenage years。

read this books years ago in the 4th grade, still have it on my bookshelf and still consider it one of my classics。

If I was in seventh grade, rather than 18, when I read this book。 I probably would have gave it a five。 Maybe even cried。

This is a great book。 It is more of a graphic novel than a book。 It gives you a great idea of how sisters are。 I absolutely recommend this book

This book gives us insight into Raina from sixth grade all the way to high school。 Raina takes us along with her through boy drama, finding friendships as well as things that change her appearances like braces, head gear, surgeries, and the changing of her smile。 I LOVED this book! Once I picked it up, I could not stop reading。 There were so many events that happened and I just couldn't put it down。 I highly recommend this book for upper elementary school students and even adults。 This book gives us insight into Raina from sixth grade all the way to high school。 Raina takes us along with her through boy drama, finding friendships as well as things that change her appearances like braces, head gear, surgeries, and the changing of her smile。 I LOVED this book! Smile, by Raina Telgemeir, is an autobiographical graphic novel about when she injured her two front teeth in 6th grade, which was followed by years of dental equipment and appointments。 Raina's lack of confidence in her outward appearance makes her feel bad about herself on the inside, making it hard for her to handle relationships with friends, boys, and family。 I felt a personal connection to this book because I also went through years of braces, an expander, and dental surgery after losing a Smile, by Raina Telgemeir, is an autobiographical graphic novel about when she injured her two front teeth in 6th grade, which was followed by years of dental equipment and appointments。 Raina's lack of confidence in her outward appearance makes her feel bad about herself on the inside, making it hard for her to handle relationships with friends, boys, and family。 I felt a personal connection to this book because I also went through years of braces, an expander, and dental surgery after losing a front tooth in volleyball。 I hope that middle school and early high school students are reminded to be kind to others, especially at that age, because everyone is feeling insecure about something。 I loved the honesty in Raina's experience and the graphic novel format。 。。。more

This book was somewhat enjoyable and is great for young students who struggle with appearance。 It is a story that shows different situations where a person may feel self-conscious or struggle with appearance。 I liked how this book was a comic book to display images that matched with how the main character was feeling while reading her story。 This book is a quick read but has many relatable situations to ponder with thoughts and ideas that have come up。

Smile follows the experiences of Raina from sixth grade to high school。 In addition to navigating friendships, boy trouble, and everything else in her life, Raina must work through a mouth injury that leads to braces, surgeries, head gear, and many stages of an "unusual" smile。 I found this graphic novel to be extremely engaging, and I had to read it all in one sitting。 The age-appropriate language of the characters and detailed visual text brings the story to life。 I would recommend this book f Smile follows the experiences of Raina from sixth grade to high school。 In addition to navigating friendships, boy trouble, and everything else in her life, Raina must work through a mouth injury that leads to braces, surgeries, head gear, and many stages of an "unusual" smile。 I found this graphic novel to be extremely engaging, and I had to read it all in one sitting。 The age-appropriate language of the characters and detailed visual text brings the story to life。 I would recommend this book for readers in upper elementary grades and up。 。。。more

I really liked reading this book because of how it was laid out。 Smile is about a girl named Raina who breaks her two front teeth while chasing her friends。 She is told she has to have surgery on her mouth which end up being lodged farther than her other teeth。 With that, Raina gets a root-canal, top braces, and headgear to wear at night。 Raina goes through humiliation by her friends about her teeth, but is also dealing with love interests in the book。 Her procedures she had earlier did not work I really liked reading this book because of how it was laid out。 Smile is about a girl named Raina who breaks her two front teeth while chasing her friends。 She is told she has to have surgery on her mouth which end up being lodged farther than her other teeth。 With that, Raina gets a root-canal, top braces, and headgear to wear at night。 Raina goes through humiliation by her friends about her teeth, but is also dealing with love interests in the book。 Her procedures she had earlier did not work so she starts all over again with a new set of braces and more care for them。 Raina's friends still keep giving her a hard time, so Raina stands up for herself and finds a new friend that helps her through her insecurities about her teeth。 At the end of the book, Raina gets her braces off feeling better than ever。 i would recommend this book to more middle-schoolers who are going through a lot of changes in their lives because they could relate to this book。 This book provides a coming-of-age theme where kids start to learn who their true friends are and find their self-worth 。。。more

I bought this, along with 3 other Raina Telgemeier books, for my niece when she's older, but I decided to read them myself before giving it to her, and today, I read the first of these books, which is this one。 Anyway, I enjoyed it。 I had started reading it when I first got the set, but I didn't like it back then, so I wondered if I would try again or just give my niece the books without reading them, but I was bored today and decided to "get it over with", seeing as I was sure I would hate it。 I bought this, along with 3 other Raina Telgemeier books, for my niece when she's older, but I decided to read them myself before giving it to her, and today, I read the first of these books, which is this one。 Anyway, I enjoyed it。 I had started reading it when I first got the set, but I didn't like it back then, so I wondered if I would try again or just give my niece the books without reading them, but I was bored today and decided to "get it over with", seeing as I was sure I would hate it。 I'm glad I read this。 Not sure how my niece will react to this just yet, but I'm hoping she'll enjoy it as much as so many others have。 Read it yourselves, maybe you'll enjoy it as much as so many others have。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It is an AMAZING book。 It is very relatable for me because a lot of the middle school problems Raina faces, I face too。 Boys, teeth/braces, and friend drama。 I just got braces so I feel her pain! I would HIGHLY recommend reading this book!

At first I thought that this book would be too boring but after finishing it I realized I really enjoyed it! For instance, at the start the book seems like it's only about a girl's broken teeth。 However, as you read the book you see it is more about going through middle and high school and finding hobbies and friends that you love。 I feel like I connect with Raina SO MUCH because I ALSO had MAJOR teeth problems in middle school!
