This graphic novel has been one of my favorites for a very long time。 When I was younger， I was super awkward， quirky （still am） and I never fit in with anyone。 This book made me feel less alone in life， and like Raina， I eventually found where I'm supposed to be， and I'm about to begin a new chapter in my life feeling a lot more confident than I would've been had I never found shelter in this story。 This graphic novel has been one of my favorites for a very long time。 When I was younger， I was super awkward， quirky （still am） and I never fit in with anyone。 This book made me feel less alone in life， and like Raina， I eventually found where I'm supposed to be， and I'm about to begin a new chapter in my life feeling a lot more confident than I would've been had I never found shelter in this story。 。。。more

I was going to rate this a 3/5， but realized that would be my rating as an adult reading the book。 When I really considered how this book would hold up for its intended audience， I bumped up my rating to a 4。 Was I left saying "Wow！" after reading this one？ Not really。 But do I see why kids are obsessed with Raina Telgemeier？ You betcha。 Her characters feel real （because they are）。 The tensions between friends and navigating tweenhood speak to a middle grade age group perfectly。 The span of time I was going to rate this a 3/5， but realized that would be my rating as an adult reading the book。 When I really considered how this book would hold up for its intended audience， I bumped up my rating to a 4。 Was I left saying "Wow！" after reading this one？ Not really。 But do I see why kids are obsessed with Raina Telgemeier？ You betcha。 Her characters feel real （because they are）。 The tensions between friends and navigating tweenhood speak to a middle grade age group perfectly。 The span of time as Raina moves through middle school and into her first year of high school was nice to see in a middle grade book。 Her illustration style is classically modern and I can see why so many kiddos find her books accessible and relatable。 Again， this wasn't a "wow" moment for me， but I totally get the appeal。 。。。more

As a child who went through a lot of dental trauma this book was very relatable。 A fast but interesting read， I would recommend。 i am happy that the protagonist found new friends as her original friend group was not very nice。 This book also highlighted ideas on growing pains and learning to love yourself。

I really liked reading this book because of how it was laid out。 Smile is about a girl named Raina who breaks her two front teeth while chasing her friends。 She is told she has to have surgery on her mouth which end up being lodged farther than her other teeth。 With that， Raina gets a root-canal， top braces， and headgear to wear at night。 Raina goes through humiliation by her friends about her teeth， but is also dealing with love interests in the book。 Her procedures she had earlier did not work I really liked reading this book because of how it was laid out。 Smile is about a girl named Raina who breaks her two front teeth while chasing her friends。 She is told she has to have surgery on her mouth which end up being lodged farther than her other teeth。 With that， Raina gets a root-canal， top braces， and headgear to wear at night。 Raina goes through humiliation by her friends about her teeth， but is also dealing with love interests in the book。 Her procedures she had earlier did not work so she starts all over again with a new set of braces and more care for them。 Raina's friends still keep giving her a hard time， so Raina stands up for herself and finds a new friend that helps her through her insecurities about her teeth。 At the end of the book， Raina gets her braces off feeling better than ever。 i would recommend this book to more middle-schoolers who are going through a lot of changes in their lives because they could relate to this book。 This book provides a coming-of-age theme where kids start to learn who their true friends are and find their self-worth 。。。more

I bought this， along with 3 other Raina Telgemeier books， for my niece when she's older， but I decided to read them myself before giving it to her， and today， I read the first of these books， which is this one。 Anyway， I enjoyed it。 I had started reading it when I first got the set， but I didn't like it back then， so I wondered if I would try again or just give my niece the books without reading them， but I was bored today and decided to "get it over with"， seeing as I was sure I would hate it。 I bought this， along with 3 other Raina Telgemeier books， for my niece when she's older， but I decided to read them myself before giving it to her， and today， I read the first of these books， which is this one。 Anyway， I enjoyed it。 I had started reading it when I first got the set， but I didn't like it back then， so I wondered if I would try again or just give my niece the books without reading them， but I was bored today and decided to "get it over with"， seeing as I was sure I would hate it。 I'm glad I read this。 Not sure how my niece will react to this just yet， but I'm hoping she'll enjoy it as much as so many others have。 Read it yourselves， maybe you'll enjoy it as much as so many others have。 。。。more
