Summary

“The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but he who causes the darkness。”

“So long as ignorance and poverty exist on earth, books of the nature of Les Misérables cannot fail to be of use,” says Victor Hugo in the preface of his famous novel。 Set in the years after the French Revolution, Les Misérables is certainly French history recounted through the personal stories of its main characters: Jean Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, Javert, and others。 And the novel offers philosophical insight on the good deeds that can happen even amidst ignorance and poverty。 This handsome leather-bound volume is a beautiful addition to any classic literature library with specially designed endpapers, gilded edges, and a ribbon bookmark so you will never lose your place。

So I read this book for my literature and English class, and it was okay。 I have now read three different versions of this book。 This is probably number two in the list。 I feel like it left out to many details that made the original really interesting to me。 But it still told the story well。 For those that are confused, this is an abridged version of the book。

。。。more

A great read and perhaps an even better musical, but one star removed due to the length including at least 3 rather long chunks (at least 50 pages each) that are barely related to the rest of the book at all and could easily be omitted without taking anything away from all but the most diehard historians (I don’t think this book was even aimed at historians in general)

Really good use of 66 hours of audible listening。 First quarter of the story is excruciating though as the main Les Miserables the book is named after meet their destitution。 Then I love how and with whom Les Miserables is defined toward the back end of the book。Don't listen/read abridged。 The beauty (and most of the text it seems) is in all of the asides。 Gets very Christian right in the finale。 If I had a dollar for every time Hugo used 'crepuscular' or 'sepulcher' I could travel to Paris。 Really good use of 66 hours of audible listening。 First quarter of the story is excruciating though as the main Les Miserables the book is named after meet their destitution。 Then I love how and with whom Les Miserables is defined toward the back end of the book。Don't listen/read abridged。 The beauty (and most of the text it seems) is in all of the asides。 Gets very Christian right in the finale。 If I had a dollar for every time Hugo used 'crepuscular' or 'sepulcher' I could travel to Paris。 。。。more

Done! Wow was this a long book! Great story and many parts about the culture were very applicable to our current culture in the US。 But, wow was it long。 I’ll never re-read it。 It was just so long winded。

Victor Hugo couldn’t decide if he wanted to write a novel or an editorial on Parisian life。 So he wrote this。 Without the unnecessary history and talk on ‘slang culture’ (which i would usually find very interesting!) this book would have been morefocused and much shorter。 The actual novel was good。 Didn’t know I was getting myself into a cultural analysis。

I have seen the musical and watched it on TV。 The music is so beautiful and helps tell the story。 I wanted to learn more from the book。 This is such a powerful and captivating storyline。 The sadness is so emotional。 It is beautifully written and a great plot。 You have poverty and struggling which hopefully will help you appreciate life more。 Don't feel you saw the play or movie you don't need to read the book as they are such a small part of this book。 I am so glad I tackled it。 I have seen the musical and watched it on TV。 The music is so beautiful and helps tell the story。 I wanted to learn more from the book。 This is such a powerful and captivating storyline。 The sadness is so emotional。 It is beautifully written and a great plot。 You have poverty and struggling which hopefully will help you appreciate life more。 Don't feel you saw the play or movie you don't need to read the book as they are such a small part of this book。 I am so glad I tackled it。 。。。more

How do you begin to write a review for what is, without any shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest books ever written。In fact, I just don’t feel qualified to review Les Mis! At its core is one of the greatest stories ever told。 It covers life。 Philosophy。 Social inequality。 Issues of justice。 Redemption。 Faith。 The best of people。 The worst of people。 Political change。 The book draws you in to such a depth of the characters that you really do feel as though you know them intimately。 A masterpiece。 It really is。 I so wished I could give it 6 stars out of 5, but settled - almost guiltily and with a deep sense of a lack of honour - at just 5 out of 5。 The book is full of diversions and even has a chapter called “parenthesis”。 And although some of these digressions are sometimes of interest (countless pages dedicated to describing Parisian architecture and town planning, the Parisian sewage system, the history of religious orders, the Battle of Waterloo), combined they do add hours of reading (and in our time poor lives, you do need dedication to read some of these sections) and can break the flow of the narrative。 This said however, Les Mis is a once in a lifetime book。 Potentially, once in many life times。The book drew me in。 And although it was set in a time now long passed, the underlying issues in the way we value human life, of single parents struggling in corrupt systems and at the mercy of those who will abuse them, the nature of greed, the power of hope, the tragedy of powerlessness, and the choice of redemption are timeless。 I consider Les Mis has changed me and what more can you ask。 6 out of 5。 。。。more

Abridged versionThe stupidity of the last few chapters really took away from the earlier emotion。 Also Cosette's "innocence" (idiocy) was annoying。 But really enjoyed the first 2/3 or so。 Abridged versionThe stupidity of the last few chapters really took away from the earlier emotion。 Also Cosette's "innocence" (idiocy) was annoying。 But really enjoyed the first 2/3 or so。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Read this entire chonker during COVID-19 quarantine。 Here are some spoiler-filled thoughts from while I was reading。We're on page 70 and For God’s sake, we only just got to Jean Valjean。 This priest guy seems pretty cool, but I’m not sure that I wanted to read this much about him。 I’m getting Pope Francis vibes from him, though。 Good fellow。 Bit recklessly trusting, but it seems to have worked out for him so far。The font in this book ius so ridiculously small, and it’s still 1400 pages。 I can’t Read this entire chonker during COVID-19 quarantine。 Here are some spoiler-filled thoughts from while I was reading。We're on page 70 and For God’s sake, we only just got to Jean Valjean。 This priest guy seems pretty cool, but I’m not sure that I wanted to read this much about him。 I’m getting Pope Francis vibes from him, though。 Good fellow。 Bit recklessly trusting, but it seems to have worked out for him so far。The font in this book ius so ridiculously small, and it’s still 1400 pages。 I can’t even imagine a large print edition of this sucker。 THis is the only complete paperback edition, apparently, and I am definitely grateful it isn’t a hardcover。 You could kill somebody with that thing。Fantine is blonde! Really? I guess it makes sense based on what Cosette looks like。 But I’m used to picturing her with long brown hair from the movie version of the musical with Anne Hathaway。I love the fact that Mme Thénardier basically named her kids after trashy romance books。 Seems like the equivalent of mass market romance books in our current times。 So I guess Eponine isn’t a classic French name like I thought it was, it’s something she got out of a romance novel。 That awkward moment when you relate too much to the bad guys。Cosette’s real name is Ephrasie, holy smokes。Fantine’s story is even more tragic in the book。 We get to actually see her whole love affair with this useless [redacted]。 She already gave birth to Cosette when this fellow left her。 He didn’t just not realize she was pregnant。 She HAD A KID and he left her。 And he’s doing all well and good 20 years later? That’s just not fair。This book is doing a great job making me feel lots of different emotions, and I’m only about 10% of the way done。Javert is such a dope。If only Fantine had talked to M。 Madeleine earlier, he could have helped her reunite with her child。I hate the Thénardiers so much。I know how this ends, but I still can’t help hoping that Fantine will reunite with Cosette。I am skipping the massively long monologues, most of which come from Fantine’s good for nothing baby daddy。 He’s such a pretentious Redditor sort。 I still can’t believe he left her with nothing but a letter。 What a [redacted]。No Jean Valjean, don’t go save the guy, I KNOW you have to because it’s the right thing to do but for God’s sake just stay free so you can do more good come on come on come ON 0-0 。。。more
