I don’t even know how to begin writing about this book。 When I first started it, I was mad at it and didn’t like where the story was going, but I was drawn to the dark and twisty。 As I kept reading I couldn’t stop。 This is a book of secrets, lies, anger, revenge, and lots of murder。 I really enjoyed the storytelling aspect, as well as the pretty writing。 I almost didn’t give it five stars for one reason: there were parts of the story I wanted so much more from and it infuriated me。 However, in t I don’t even know how to begin writing about this book。 When I first started it, I was mad at it and didn’t like where the story was going, but I was drawn to the dark and twisty。 As I kept reading I couldn’t stop。 This is a book of secrets, lies, anger, revenge, and lots of murder。 I really enjoyed the storytelling aspect, as well as the pretty writing。 I almost didn’t give it five stars for one reason: there were parts of the story I wanted so much more from and it infuriated me。 However, in the end I felt like it might have been written that way because (a) secrets were a huge part of the plot and (b) there is a second book that I am hoping reveals what I felt was missing。 In the end, I say five stars based on the simple fact that I started the book ready to tear it apart and burn the pieces and ended it in tears ready for the next book。 。。。more

The idea was nice, though I don't think it was very well executed。 I usually like enemies-to-lovers stories, though they have to be slow and suffered。 This, on the contrary, happened too quickly and too easily。 For a strong character like Shazi, I expected better。 The idea was nice, though I don't think it was very well executed。 I usually like enemies-to-lovers stories, though they have to be slow and suffered。 This, on the contrary, happened too quickly and too easily。 For a strong character like Shazi, I expected better。 。。。more

If we could have a more detailed rating that would reach maybe 3。5 stars? I recently did a presentation on the Islamic civilization a few days before I started reading this book。 So, I was quite familiar with some of the Arabic words and expressions used in this beautifully written novel。 I fell in love with all the characters save most of the elder ones。 Overall, such a good enemies-to-lovers story, and I'm so excited to read the second book! 🖤 I recently did a presentation on the Islamic civilization a few days before I started reading this book。 So, I was quite familiar with some of the Arabic words and expressions used in this beautifully written novel。 I fell in love with all the characters save most of the elder ones。 Overall, such a good enemies-to-lovers story, and I'm so excited to read the second book! 🖤 。。。more

I felt no connection to the couple。 I don't know why they liked each other。 And that really bothers me! I feel like the author tried to explain Shahrzad's thoughts but I don't get how she likes him SO much。 I also don't get why he chose her, how she caught his eye, as opposed to the 70+ girls he had already been with。 Reading his letter about Shiva, I feel like he could have just as easily chosen her。I loved the Persian influences, I am Indian myself, but I love seeing any Arab/ Middle eastern/ Indian/ Persian influences in books(as long as they aren't harmful annoying mean stereotypes)I am still excited to read the sequel though。 。。。more

i loved this book so much! the writing is so beautiful, and i love the main character a lot。 the romance was so good- the ANGST the YEARNING !!!!!!the only part that i didn’t like was the storyline with tariq and shazi’s father; it was kind of boring up until the end and i wish the magic was explained a bit more。 but overall this book was absolutely amazing and everyone should read it

This was such a captivating, pleasant surprise。 I love fairytale retellings and although I had seen this one floating around for so long, I’d kept putting it off - I wish I hadn’t! “There is a vast difference between meaning to do something and actually doing it。”Quick synopsis: The Caliph of Khorasan has been taking a bride every night and killing her every morning for the past seventy-four days。 When her best friend is the latest sacrificial bride, Shahrzad al-Khayzuran vows revenge。 Yet with This was such a captivating, pleasant surprise。 I love fairytale retellings and although I had seen this one floating around for so long, I’d kept putting it off - I wish I hadn’t! “There is a vast difference between meaning to do something and actually doing it。”Quick synopsis: The Caliph of Khorasan has been taking a bride every night and killing her every morning for the past seventy-four days。 When her best friend is the latest sacrificial bride, Shahrzad al-Khayzuran vows revenge。 Yet with each tale she tells to grant a reprieve, she discovers not all is as it seems at the palace。 “I've always believed a man is what he does, not what others say。”This book was a evocative, elevated blend/ reminder of Martine Leavitt’s ‘Keturah and Lord Death’ and ‘The Shadows Between Us‘ by Tricia Levenseller with breathtaking prose and a beautiful balance of characterization and romance。 Neither outweighed the other。。。。。。。。。。(Minor spoilers discussed ahead)。。。。。。One critique I keep reading is how the Caliph is scum (even the ‘monster’ he calls himself) as he kept killing his brides。 In my opinion, the author did a really believable job of exploring the guilt and pain he felt of the why and how of getting to that place to begin with。 Let’s also remember, not only is this a fairytale, there is a book two。 I’m all for a redemption arc (for a fictional character) but maybe we could back off the suspension bridge of disbelief until we finish the duology before grabbing pitchforks。 There are plenty of characters I could name who are more popular and way more problematic than a Caliph who is tortured by a curse he doesn’t have control over。Definitely being shelved as a comfort read for me! 。。。more

I think I made a mistake。。。 I decided to listen to this YA novel rather than read it, and let me tell you, it was awkward。 In no way do I wish to minimize the talents of the voice actress, but I do think certain choices that were made while narrating the story were “cringe-y”, though it very well could be that the writing itself made me cringe。。。 “destroy me” LOLI honestly don’t know how much more I would have enjoyed The Wrath and the Dawn in book format as I am discovering I am generally not t I think I made a mistake。。。 I decided to listen to this YA novel rather than read it, and let me tell you, it was awkward。 In no way do I wish to minimize the talents of the voice actress, but I do think certain choices that were made while narrating the story were “cringe-y”, though it very well could be that the writing itself made me cringe。。。 “destroy me” LOLI honestly don’t know how much more I would have enjoyed The Wrath and the Dawn in book format as I am discovering I am generally not the biggest fan of the YA style of writing (though I am not ready to make that generalization yet)。 I also wasn’t sold on the romance story that didn’t have much substance or justification - though maybe we’ll get more of that in book 2。 Putting all of this aside, I still finished the novel。 I enjoyed the setting and the inclusion of Urdu/Arabic words。 I just don’t know whether I am curious enough to pick up the second novel, even though it ends on a cliff hanger。 。。。more

I was completely distraught because this author gave every indication that they knew what they were doing。 Then I thought “hummm I wonder if there is another book。。。”Yup。 Problem solved。Reading when you have mental illness is fun。 Some days it is like an escape from the pain between your ears, sometimes it is the reason for that pain, and for a lot of this book it was the latter。 I'm trying to read more ya fantasy as most of the agents that I'm looking at request similar titles and I just don't have the breadth of books I need to even begin finding ones that are similar, so getting through this book was something I felt like I had to do, even though my brain was barely up to the task。 Not that anything was wrong with the book, it was safe in all the right ways as far as triggers go, but books tend to have tension and conflict, and when your brain is barely holding itself together these things can become taxing。What things can I actually say about the book? The love triangle drove me crazy, because even though I knew that Shahrzad and the king were going to end up together I loved angry boy。 But then as time went on I was more in love with the main couple and more annoyed at angry boy and by the end I wanted to smack him over the head。 So that was pleasant to go through that change。 I feel manipulated by the author in the best way。 I loved Shahrzad, she was the perfect amount of kick-butt but still needing someone to stab people。 She was strong in every way I wish I was。 But then you would need to be that type of person to try and pull off what she planned to do in the beginning。 I'm not going to be plotting to murder kings anytime soon。 Ha。 Ha。As for the premise, I love the Arabin Nights。 I have a three-volume set of the original translations and got through about half of the first one - which is a realllly big deal。 It really is just one story, just like they say, but it has stories within stories within stories with side stories and those stories have stories - ug。 It is also in super small print and they don't hold ANYTHING back as far as flowery language and over-done imagery and witty dialogue between side characters。 It also is SUPER not family-friendly, very much in R rating with some really weird stuff that they could NEVER make a Disney movie about。And I love them。 I know it sounds ridiculous but I want to go crack it open and get lost in that random crazy world。 Maybe I will after we move as they are currently packed away。 And, you know, after I read the next book out of this series。。。Assuming I can hold my skull together long enough to do so。 。。。more

Was the relationship development realistic and good? No。 Did I enjoy the hell out of this book? Yes。 Everyone was hot, Shazi was a baddie who took no shit, Khalid is your typical angsty boy, and we’ve got some side characters vibin in the background。 I think if I cared more about the writing, this would get a worse rating, but I read this in 3 days and had the time of my life。 Shazi was just THIRSTY for this murderous hunk and you know what that’s fair。

This book was hard to rate。 I really enjoyed it, but I was very close to giving it a 3 instead。 But in the end, I can’t ignore how much I fell in love with the characters (both the main characters and the amazing side characters that *actually* added substance to the story) as well as the authentically built Persian (fantasy) setting。 “I will live to see tomorrow’s sunset。 Make no mistake。 I swear。 I will live to see as many sunsets as it takes。 And I will kill you。” Here’s the gist of it: The W This book was hard to rate。 I really enjoyed it, but I was very close to giving it a 3 instead。 But in the end, I can’t ignore how much I fell in love with the characters (both the main characters and the amazing side characters that *actually* added substance to the story) as well as the authentically built Persian (fantasy) setting。 “I will live to see tomorrow’s sunset。 Make no mistake。 I swear。 I will live to see as many sunsets as it takes。 And I will kill you。” Here’s the gist of it: The Wrath and the Dawn is a fantasy romance inspired by/retelling? A Thousand and One Nights。 The story is about the young Kaliph of Khorasan who takes a new bride every day only to have her killed at sunrise。 The book’s heroine Sharzad volunteers to become his bride after her best friend had been executed, and enters the palace with the intent of besting Khalid (who she thinks of as a murderous monster) and getting revenge for her friend。 In order to do so, the night he enters her chamber she starts telling him a story and refuses to continue unless he lets her live for another day。 Why I loved this book: The Persian setting!! The amazing descriptions and world-building。 The side characters that were actually funny and not just sprinkled in side-kicks。 The development from Shazi’s internalized hatred to finding out not everything about the murderous Kaliph is as it seems。 The dialogues!!Things that could’ve been better: The writing was sometimes a bit too ~flowery~。 There were many many instances where Shazi could’ve made good on her threat to kill Khalid but didn’t which felt unrealistic。 Also I struggled getting into the flow of this book for the first 100 pages or so and was very confused for a lot of it because a looot of things are mentioned in passing or alluded to without further explanation, leaving the reader confused。 In the beginning the many to me foreign terms thrown in without much context were a bit overwhelming, especially since I didn’t realize there was a glossary lol。 But then again, having to flip back and forth every few sentences wouldn’t have been much fun either。Also the last few pages were quite disorienting, probably an attempt to prepare the plot for the second book, but it was just a little much in a short time。 But overall I can’t deny that I really enjoyed this book, even though it has its flaws and is a little too cliché at times。 。。。more

Almost gave this two stars until over half way through but it had just enough to keep me intrigued。 Did not really live up to my expectations, and it frustrated me a lot, but it was fine。 The writing itself is very stylish but for me it lacked character and relationship development so I didn’t feel invested。

Dancing between 3-4 stars。The Caliph of Khorasan (Khalid) takes new wife ever day, only to have a killed in the morning。 When Shahrzad's dear friend (Shiva) is taken and killed by the Caliph, she vows revenge and willingly goes to the Caliph to kill him。 I've extremely mixed feelings about this story, I found the first 40% rather slow paced and drenched with descriptions。 The first half would be 2。5-3 stars and the second half 4 stars。 The Wrath and the Dawn is a book full of descriptions, angst Dancing between 3-4 stars。The Caliph of Khorasan (Khalid) takes new wife ever day, only to have a killed in the morning。 When Shahrzad's dear friend (Shiva) is taken and killed by the Caliph, she vows revenge and willingly goes to the Caliph to kill him。 I've extremely mixed feelings about this story, I found the first 40% rather slow paced and drenched with descriptions。 The first half would be 2。5-3 stars and the second half 4 stars。 The Wrath and the Dawn is a book full of descriptions, angsty romance, a slow pace and morally grey characters。 I started the book (first 35%) on an empty stomach and a throbbing headache which probably wasn't a good idea, lol。 Hence, I barely remember it, just a vague, foggy blur of descriptions。 I'll be honest, I skipped some paragraphs and wasn't that invested in the story until 60% through。This book has a vibe that I can't place my finger on。 Imagine, being shown a picture with a splash of bright sparkling colours that dazzle you and linger in your mind。 Now suddenly, you're shown an abstract painting full of subtle, toned down powder, constantly shifting across the canvas。 At first, you dislike the latter painting, it looks rather dull and isn't exactly what you like。 But then, you start to see some vague similarities between the two paintings and start to appreciate the latter picture。 You understand that it has a different style that's beautiful in its own way。The first painting is basically the books I usually read, the latter painting is this book, not my usual preference but I like it。I've re-written this review a thousand times and I can't form proper words on how I find this book。 (I'll add more about the characters and plot once I figure out how to phrase it) 。。。more
