Summary

An alternate-cover edition can be found here and here

"Northanger Abbey" tells the story of a young girl, Catherine Morland who leaves her sheltered, rural home to enter the busy, sophisticated world of Bath in the late 1790s。 Austen observes with insight and humour the interaction between Catherine and the various characters whom she meets there, and tracks her growing understanding of the world about her。

In this, her first full-length novel, Austen also fixes her sharp, ironic gaze on other kinds of contemporary novel, especially the Gothic school made famous by Ann Radcliffe。 Catherine's reading becomes intertwined with her social and romantic adventures, adding to the uncertainties and embarrassments she must undergo before finding happiness。

A definite divergence for Jane Austen, I admire her cheekiness for mocking the popular gothic romance novels of the time and producing this gem of a novel。 I wasn't familiar with the story at all going in (I hadn't read it before or watched any of the screen adaptations)。 I was pleasantly surprised with unexpected villains and a heroine with a wonderfully overactive imagination。 Though the first sentence of Pride and Prejudice will continue to be quoted by many, I feel the last sentence of North A definite divergence for Jane Austen, I admire her cheekiness for mocking the popular gothic romance novels of the time and producing this gem of a novel。 I wasn't familiar with the story at all going in (I hadn't read it before or watched any of the screen adaptations)。 I was pleasantly surprised with unexpected villains and a heroine with a wonderfully overactive imagination。 Though the first sentence of Pride and Prejudice will continue to be quoted by many, I feel the last sentence of Northhanger Abbey should also be quoted:"。。。I leave it to be settled, by whomsoever it may concern, whether the tendency of this work be altogether to recommend parental tyranny, or reward filial disobedience。"  。。。more

This one is more Jane Austen's idea of a parody of a gothic novel。 It's full of irony and sarcasms。 Catherine is a bit naive, but still, pretty likeable。 It's not my favorite book by her, but still, it was a nice one。 This one is more Jane Austen's idea of a parody of a gothic novel。 It's full of irony and sarcasms。 Catherine is a bit naive, but still, pretty likeable。 It's not my favorite book by her, but still, it was a nice one。 。。。more

“It is only a novel。。。 or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language”

Sorry Sarah, didn’t love it! I had high hopes for this book but it really fell flat for me。

Thank you, God, for Jane Austen。 Thank you for her presence always in my life。 Jane's stories are always there to hold me, and teach me every time I read them。 Thank you, God, for Jane Austen。 Thank you for her presence always in my life。 Jane's stories are always there to hold me, and teach me every time I read them。 。。。more

I had to read this book for College and needless to say I was quite disappointed Although the storyline in itself is interesting and quite funny if you are familiar with Austen’s work, i found most of it to be quite boring and uneventful, pages of pointless knowledge and endless descriptions did bore me。Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if it was not set as work but nonetheless it was still a nice read and recommended if you want to read something very contrasting to Austen’s usual work。

Being such a Jane Austen fan as I am, I can not believe I have only just read Northanger Abbey。 What a delightfully amusing story。 I thoroughly enjoyed it。

Oh boy。 What can I say about this that hasn't been said? It's complete shit。 You'll be bored to death。 And just when you think there's going to be real conflict or stakes or anything is going to happen AT ALL, it just。。。doesn't。 Come on, Jane。 Do better。 Oh boy。 What can I say about this that hasn't been said? "“The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid。” What a delightful little novel! You might not get the same depth and range of emotion in this as Austen's other novels, but you definitely get her signature wit with satire on popular gothic novels of the time。 Honestly, this novel is worth just the lol scenes between Catherine and the dimwitted John Thorpe。 "“The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid。” What a delightful little novel!

This is an entertaining and witty book。 The main character is 18 year-old Catherine Morland, from a middle-class family, who loves gothic novels and has an overactive imagination。 She is taken to Bath where she makes friends with, in her view, the very best and noblest of people。 When she is invited to Northanger Abbey her imagination goes into overdrive and becomes convinced that a woman is being held captive there by her cruel husband。Austen satirises the gothic novel, which was very popular a This is an entertaining and witty book。 The main character is 18 year-old Catherine Morland, from a middle-class family, who loves gothic novels and has an overactive imagination。 She is taken to Bath where she makes friends with, in her view, the very best and noblest of people。 When she is invited to Northanger Abbey her imagination goes into overdrive and becomes convinced that a woman is being held captive there by her cruel husband。Austen satirises the gothic novel, which was very popular at that time, as presenting an overly simplistic view of human nature, where people are either helpless victims or cruel manipulators。 Catherine’s experiences enable her to take a more nuanced and realistic view of life。 Austen also speaks up in defence of the novel, which was looked down upon at that time as inferior to other types of art。 。。。more

The book chronicles a Miss Morland's first adventure from home out into the society of Bath。 She meets new friends, falls in love, imagines all sorts of horrific fantasies as a result of exposing herself too much to gothic novels, and falls victim to misunderstandings。 She has adventures and misadventures as she works to understand her place in the world。 It was a fun, short read。 The book chronicles a Miss Morland's first adventure from home out into the society of Bath。 She meets new friends, falls in love, imagines all sorts of horrific fantasies as a result of exposing herself too much to gothic novels, and falls victim to misunderstandings。 She has adventures and misadventures as she works to understand her place in the world。 It was a fun, short read。 。。。more

Northanger Abbey is my FAVORITE Jane Austen novel!! I love the coming-of-age aspect of this book, such as how Catherine is initially quite naive in terms of interacting with people outside of her family and assimilating into high society, yet by the end of the book, she has a much better grasp of understanding herself and the community she is around。 I also love the elements of humor throughout this book (thanks to Mr。 Tilney)。

Young and impressionable Catherine Morland is taken for a visit to Bath by family friebds Mr and Mrs Allen。 The sweet, naive Catherine experiences all the trials and tribulations of first love when she falls for Henry Tilney。 I love Miss Austen's ability to portray society with such wit and gentle sarcasm。 Young and impressionable Catherine Morland is taken for a visit to Bath by family friebds Mr and Mrs Allen。 The sweet, naive Catherine experiences all the trials and tribulations of first love when she falls for Henry Tilney。 I love Miss Austen's ability to portray society with such wit and gentle sarcasm。 。。。more

Jane Austen never disappoints。 I especially enjoyed this book of hers because of the pace of it。 It was quicker to read and the plot developed faster compared to Emma which I read before this。 Austen also critiques the role of women in society and the culture of marriages and class ambition in England。 The elements of Gothic romanticism are parodied expertly and drew me even further into the story。 Subtle lessons and comments about society are evident throughout the novel and the characters of J Jane Austen never disappoints。 I especially enjoyed this book of hers because of the pace of it。 It was quicker to read and the plot developed faster compared to Emma which I read before this。 Austen also critiques the role of women in society and the culture of marriages and class ambition in England。 The elements of Gothic romanticism are parodied expertly and drew me even further into the story。 Subtle lessons and comments about society are evident throughout the novel and the characters of John and Isabella Thorpe were incredibly true to many people of today’s world。 The characters are imperfect and therefore real and relatable in the timeless way that Austen is known to have mastered。 In regards to intertextuality, studying Atonement while being able to link the epigraph and Catherine Morland and Briony Tallis’ characters, is fascinating and aids in understanding the overall theme of the set work。 Overall, I would definitely recommend this :) 。。。more

This is the first novel published by Jane Austen and although the formula and the foundation in her female lead are the typical Austen, I found the structure a bit more tangled than her other novels which made it heavier and tedious at times to finish。 Henry Tilney might become one of my favorite male characters from Austen, though。 On the road to understand Austen’s writing, this book is crucial。

As a non-native English speaker, I am afraid of reading Jane Austen’s work。 Her language is too complicated and I doubt she knows the usage of a dot (。) since she very rarely uses it and writes sentences that are 10 lines long。 The book was shorter than her other works but it was still “wordy and hard to read” so i would recommend her Grammerly。 All jokes aside, the book was quite humorous and satirical。 Even though struggled in reading it, it was a fun ride。 Would I recommend? Northanger Abbey is a book that doesn't take itself seriously, and I wish I'd known that before I read it。Catherine Morland is young, naive, and silly - Austen often implies or clearly says this herself。 This book is a satirical commentary on the literary heroine tropes, which were relevant in Austen's time and are just as prevalent now。I took this book at face value, and it was enjoyable in the end but I struggled to pick it back up。 I enjoyed Austen's "author voice" interjections, but I couldn Northanger Abbey is a book that doesn't take itself seriously, and I wish I'd known that before I read it。Catherine Morland is young, naive, and silly - Austen often implies or clearly says this herself。 This book is a satirical commentary on the literary heroine tropes, which were relevant in Austen's time and are just as prevalent now。I took this book at face value, and it was enjoyable in the end but I struggled to pick it back up。 I enjoyed Austen's "author voice" interjections, but I couldn't move past my apathy towards Catherine and the man she was falling for。Knowing now that Austen was basically mocking the style of gothic romances at the time, my opinion of this book has changed。 I also need to re-read it, because I think this in combination with a knowledge of the plot makes it a far better read。 And it's this that led me to give it 4 stars after thinking about it for a bit , instead of the initial 3 I was going for at first! 。。。more

This work of Jane Austen struck me curiously for it was not so much a romance as her other books - though of that element is was not without - but a much more lighthearted, satirical, and humorous story of a young woman of inexperience and with fairytale ideals who grows into maturity by a comedy of errors。

this book is like a story you read on fictionpress, but i'd be lying if i said i didn't enjoy every single moment in this book。 except for the ending。 the ending seems flat for me, like every other Jane Austen book i've read (gets you invested on the characters, especially the main ship, then the ending is meh)。 though this one has a disclaimer on the how the ending would be。lmao this book suddenly rearranged my top 3 Jane Austen heroines and heroes!
