Summary

Sens and Sensibility's two heroines - so utterly unlike each other - undergo the most violent passions when they are separated from the men they love。 What differentiates them, and gives this extraordinary book its complexity and brilliance is the way each expresses her suffering。 Marianne - young, impetuous, ardent - falls into paroxysms of grief when she is rejected by the dashing John Willoughby; while her sister, Elinor - wiser, more sensible, more self-controlled - masks her despair when it appears that Edward Ferrars is to marry the mean-spirited and cunning Lucy Steele。 All, of course, ends happily - but not until Elinor's 'sense' and Mariannes' 'sensibility' have equally worked to reveal the profound emotional life that runs beneath the surface of Austen's immaculate art。

Elinor is even more hilarious than I remember, and the characterizations do not disappoint。 Truly, Jane Austen gets even better with age

I think Sense and Sensibility is tied with Emma for my favorite Jane Austen story。 I appreciate Eleanor and Colonel Brandon’s characters, and their consistency and their loyalty, even when it’s painful。 I listened to this one on audiobook, and I found my focus drifting several times, which is why I gave it three stars。 But I believe if I had read a physical copy, I would’ve stayed more engaged。

。。。more

This is the first Jane Austen novel I've read。 I read it as a post-College adult but I think I would have enjoyed studying it in school。 I listened to a podcast which contained a lot of information about the author and her upbringing which made this novel more enjoyable。 It's amazing how Austen can create such real characters with depth。 I truly enjoyed this read - a great break from many non-fiction books I was reading。 I read it for a book club and plan to come back and read another Jane Auste This is the first Jane Austen novel I've read。 I read it as a post-College adult but I think I would have enjoyed studying it in school。 I listened to a podcast which contained a lot of information about the author and her upbringing which made this novel more enjoyable。 It's amazing how Austen can create such real characters with depth。 I truly enjoyed this read - a great break from many non-fiction books I was reading。 I read it for a book club and plan to come back and read another Jane Austen novel。 。。。more

I enjoyed SAS and strongly recommend it。 I didn’t realize it was Austin’s first published novel until I had finished it。 The classic coming of age story。 Like Pride and Prejudice it is a character study on the virtues of sense (which I took to be Maryanne’s passion) or sensibility embodied by Elinor。 I was unsure at the end which Austin considered the better quality or if they are required in equal parts? Perhaps that isn’t the point, to come to certainty, but to see the sensibility in having both。 I love the setting of Victorian England and it’s social conventions。 Victorian Society’s requirements for a young person to become financially independent were quite intricate and I find them fascinating, charming really, they make me sad for a simpler era that we won’t see again。 Still reading Ms。 Austin’s books one is transported to that more ideal time, and for that, I am very grateful to Jane Austin。 We can learn much from her, especially how to live a virtuous life, and nothing is more important than that。 I enjoyed this book almost as much as Pride and Prejudice which is saying something, because it doesn’t get any better than that book。 Highest recommendation, man or woman, young or old, all should read Jane Austin。 。。。more

Unfortunately I’ve discovered I’m not a Jane Austen fan and couldn’t bring myself to even finish this book, and most certainly will never read another novel by Austen again。 I can easily see how it would have been a very popular book in its’ time, but it’s simply too dated now。 👎🏼The entire book is centred around husband hunting👰🏻🤵🏻💍, wealth💷, social status🥂, and gossiping🗣, all of which I absolutely despise。 I can appreciate these traits were all commonplace and am happy to acknowledge it, but Unfortunately I’ve discovered I’m not a Jane Austen fan and couldn’t bring myself to even finish this book, and most certainly will never read another novel by Austen again。 I can easily see how it would have been a very popular book in its’ time, but it’s simply too dated now。 👎🏼The entire book is centred around husband hunting👰🏻🤵🏻💍, wealth💷, social status🥂, and gossiping🗣, all of which I absolutely despise。 I can appreciate these traits were all commonplace and am happy to acknowledge it, but it’s not relatable in this day and age, and I just couldn’t connect with any of the characters。 I didn’t care who married whom, or who was liked and disliked。。。。 how much money each person had。。。。 BLAH!

First time ever, I think I liked the movie better than the book! Austin seems a little overbearing on class warfare, expectations? In this book, more than I’ve seen her others。 I find myself wondering how People made money in the Georgian era? Because it sure seems like they just have it and they give it to the children and nobody actually works。 Will add notes from the book later。

I loved the book and I loved the movie as well, Emma Thompson as Elinor Dashwood IS stunning。 Here's what I loved about this book Elinor Dashwood is heroine that even in 2021 would be a role model for women and gay men could only wish to be as kind of smart, strong-willed as Elinor。 I just love Elinor haha People think of Jane Austen as first romance writer, But when you read her books it's always pretty clear how cynical she is about love and marriage。 I didn't know that this was her first boo I loved the book and I loved the movie as well, Emma Thompson as Elinor Dashwood IS stunning。 Here's what I loved about this book Elinor Dashwood is heroine that even in 2021 would be a role model for women and gay men could only wish to be as kind of smart, strong-willed as Elinor。 I just love Elinor haha People think of Jane Austen as first romance writer, But when you read her books it's always pretty clear how cynical she is about love and marriage。 I didn't know that this was her first book, I love Pride and Prejudice but I think I like this book more。 Fuck it, Elinor is better than Elizabeth Bennet。 。。。more
