Summary

It's a poor sort of memory that only works backward。

In Carroll's sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland， Alice once again finds herself in a bizarre and nonsensical place when she passes through a mirror and enters a looking-glass world where nothing is quite as it seems。 From her guest appearance as a pawn in a chess match to her meeting with Humpty Dumpty， Through the Looking Glass follows Alice on her curious adventure and shows Carroll's great skill at creating an imaginary world full of the fantastical and extraordinary。

Davvero meraviglioso non l'avevo mai letto！ Incredibile come nel cartoon Disney abbiano fatto un mix dei due libri cogliendo e presentando assolutamente a caso quel che volevano come volevano！Non che fosse facile， specialmente questo libro è discontinuo e onirico， salta sempre di palo in frasca。 Ma al tempo stesso è geniale！ Spettacolari le poesie anche grazie all'ottimo lavoro di traduzione！ Da leggere e rileggere！ Davvero meraviglioso non l'avevo mai letto！ Incredibile come nel cartoon Disney abbiano fatto un mix dei due libri cogliendo e presentando assolutamente a caso quel che volevano come volevano！Non che fosse facile， specialmente questo libro è discontinuo e onirico， salta sempre di palo in frasca。 Ma al tempo stesso è geniale！ Spettacolari le poesie anche grazie all'ottimo lavoro di traduzione！ Da leggere e rileggere！ 。。。more

“Ma io non voglio andare fra i matti” osservò Alice。“Be’ non hai altra scelta” disse il Gatto。 “Qui siamo tutti matti。 Io sono matto。 Tu sei matta。”“Come lo sai che sono matta？” disse Alice。“Per forza，” disse il Gatto “altrimenti non saresti venuta qui”Pochi personaggi letterari hanno ispirato il cinema， la televisione， il fumetto e la letteratura dopo di loro come Alice。 Decido quindi， pur conoscendo a grandi linee la trama sia per il film Disney sia per le numerose rielaborazioni e citazioni， “Ma io non voglio andare fra i matti” osservò Alice。“Be’ non hai altra scelta” disse il Gatto。 “Qui siamo tutti matti。 Io sono matto。 Tu sei matta。”“Come lo sai che sono matta？” disse Alice。“Per forza，” disse il Gatto “altrimenti non saresti venuta qui”Pochi personaggi letterari hanno ispirato il cinema， la televisione， il fumetto e la letteratura dopo di loro come Alice。 Decido quindi， pur conoscendo a grandi linee la trama sia per il film Disney sia per le numerose rielaborazioni e citazioni， di provare la lettura di entrambi i romanzi di Carroll con Alice protagonista。Vi giro innanzitutto il consiglio che ho ricevuto e seguito: ho letto l’Alice annotata da Martin Gardner nella traduzione di Masolino d’Amico， fra l’altro disponibile sul sistema bibliotecario on line。E’ davvero difficile cercare di dire qualcosa di originale su questi libri， mi limito a darvi due impressioni。La lettura richiede un doppio livello di approfondimento per apprezzare appieno le cose， infatti si tratta di una serie di romanzi ricchissima di giochi di parole intraducibili， e con sottintesi riguardanti la cultura di allora che risultano incomprensibili a noi contemporanei anche se fossimo di madrelingua inglesi。 Diventa quindi fondamentale seguire le note， che propongono fra l’altro la versione originale delle poesie proposte nel testo， oltre naturalmente a spiegare i giochi di parole e dare le contestualizzazioni necessarie a comprendere appieno le battute。 Detto così non rende ma credetemi… non è affatto faticoso e anzi è divertentissimo， pur ovviamente restando la doppia barriera della lingua e del tempo （ma come i grandissimi， da Omero a Dante） mi è piaciuto un sacco questo dover immaginare l’efficacia delle battute anziché coglierla al volo come succede quando leggo qualcosa di contemporaneoLa seconda cosa che volevo dirvi… durante la lettura mi sono lasciato stregare， mi sono lasciato portare con Alice in questo mondo incantato， senza soffermarmi troppo a cercare significati o riflessioni ma solo cercando la freschezza e la fantasia che l’autore ci ha messo e lasciandomi rapire dai suoi surreali personaggi。 。。。more

I think I might have enjoyed this more than the first book。 I always enjoy the eccentric cast of characters， and the sheer absurdity is a good exercise in thinking like a kid again and not taking everything too seriously。

The whimsy bordering on insanity is what makes Lewis Carroll’s books endearing to so many people， but when it fully crosses into insanity I don’t think I quite like it。 The writing style has grown on me a bit though since Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland， which I gave 2 stars。

I read both books in one volume — but I have to say it was two in order to meet my Goodreads challenge for the year :-） I think I was overexposed to every single idea in these books。 It's hard to feel a sense of wonder if every image has been present since before I could read。 I enjoyed how Carrol deconstructed idioms and common expressions in English， but it left me wondering how any 7。5-year-old would be able to follow。 Some of the poems were quite wonderful， but reading this felt like somethi I read both books in one volume — but I have to say it was two in order to meet my Goodreads challenge for the year :-） I think I was overexposed to every single idea in these books。 It's hard to feel a sense of wonder if every image has been present since before I could read。 I enjoyed how Carrol deconstructed idioms and common expressions in English， but it left me wondering how any 7。5-year-old would be able to follow。 Some of the poems were quite wonderful， but reading this felt like something to do for my general literary education。 I can't say it was a great deal of fun。 。。。more
