Summary

Twentieth Anniversary Edition with Contributions from Joe Hill and Owen King。 Immensely helpful and illuminating to any aspiring writer, this special edition of Stephen King’s critically lauded, million-copy bestseller shares the experiences, habits, and convictions that have shaped him and his work。

“Long live the King” hailed Entertainment Weekly upon publication of Stephen King’s On Writing。 Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have。 King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999 - and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery。 Brilliantly structured, friendly and inspiring, On Writing will empower and entertain everyone who reads it - fans, writers, and anyone who loves a great story well told。

An enjoyable read。 Part memoir, part craft discussion。 A lot of the craft discussion I was already familiar with (like lose the adverbs; he clearly does not like adverbs)。 But, for someone who's never taken a class, there's a lot of helpful information in a very short space (about 150 pages if you want to skip the memoir stuff)。 And it's well written and not very text-booky at all。 An enjoyable read。 Part memoir, part craft discussion。 A lot of the craft discussion I was already familiar with (like lose the adverbs; he clearly does not like adverbs)。 But, for someone who's never taken a class, there's a lot of helpful information in a very short space (about 150 pages if you want to skip the memoir stuff)。 And it's well written and not very text-booky at all。 。。。more

Stephen King is, without need for debate, one of the most prolific and influential authors in modern time。 In On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, King offers readers insights on his writing career and personal life, as well as practical writing tips to hone their craft。 Like the best of his body of work, On Writing is presented as a riveting story full of emotion, jaw-dropping moments of terror, and passages that will stick with you for life。If you've ever read a Stephen King novel and thought to Stephen King is, without need for debate, one of the most prolific and influential authors in modern time。 In On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, King offers readers insights on his writing career and personal life, as well as practical writing tips to hone their craft。 Like the best of his body of work, On Writing is presented as a riveting story full of emotion, jaw-dropping moments of terror, and passages that will stick with you for life。If you've ever read a Stephen King novel and thought to yourself, "gee, that's messed up, I wonder how he came up with that", On Writing will give you an undeniably understandable explanation。 。。。more

I read this at the suggestion of my new boy toy。 The memoir parts of it were very interesting。 I'm not a writer per se, but the parts on writing were interesting even so。 It kind of made me want to write。 There are a few times when he devolves into "OK Boomer" complaining, but it doesn't take up much time。 I read this at the suggestion of my new boy toy。 The memoir parts of it were very interesting。 I'm not a writer per se, but the parts on writing were interesting even so。 It kind of made me want to write。 There are a few times when he devolves into "OK Boomer" complaining, but it doesn't take up much time。 。。。more

6/5!This is a really special book — perhaps even (hot take incoming) Stephen King’s best work。 It is both inspiring and beautiful。 I love reading this text from time to time, and I look forward to revisiting it again in the future。 My favourite line: “It starts with this: put your desk in the corner, and every time you sit down there to write, remind yourself why it isn’t in the middle of the room。 Life isn’t a support system for art。 It’s the other way around。”

Oddly enough, I've never read a Stephen King novel, but still enjoyed this memoir meets writing guide。 Even as a non-fiction writer, I found there's still interesting insight to gain from a fiction author, and overall, this was just a lovely read。 Oddly enough, I've never read a Stephen King novel, but still enjoyed this memoir meets writing guide。 Even as a non-fiction writer, I found there's still interesting insight to gain from a fiction author, and overall, this was just a lovely read。 。。。more

First of all, the photo on the cover。 Was there ever a sexier image of a male writer? The sneakers on the desk, the jeans, the shirt sleeve rolled up to show his forearm, the absorption in his task。 The whole epic cool is then undercut by the family corgi wandering round, possibly the least sexy of all beasts。 I'm now wishing I liked horror because I loved Stephen King's humour and lively prose。 The only one I've read is Dreamcatcher and I didn't enjoy it。 Maybe I'll look out Carrie。 Or somethin First of all, the photo on the cover。 Was there ever a sexier image of a male writer? The book is divided into autobiography, the writers Toolkit (which I found too basic) and finally the craft。 Is it King that we have to blame for the embargo on adverbs and passive voice? Or was that already the fashion? My paperback copy is annotated with pencil underlinings and commentary。 I'm sure I'm not the first to notice it, but isn't there something deeply weird about King being knocked down by a guy who could have walked off the pages of his novel, has his leg mangled and ends up in 'splints' - just like the writer in Misery。 Would have given this 4* but it got a tad slow towards the end。 。。。more

Really enjoyable and informative, gives you a view of Stephen King that you don't ordinarily see: his insight into his accident, his passion as a writer and his sense of humour。 I'm not sure I've taken away a massive amount but a couple of bits are definitely helpful。 Really enjoyable and informative, gives you a view of Stephen King that you don't ordinarily see: his insight into his accident, his passion as a writer and his sense of humour。 I'm not sure I've taken away a massive amount but a couple of bits are definitely helpful。 。。。more

Absolutely loved this book。 I have never read Stephen King before so it was ironic this was the book I picked to know about Writing。This book truly is a motivation for budding writers and also inspiring in other ways。 The key point is to be good at anything, keep doing it consistently。

Gold!King tells the truth and the truth is arresting and sometimes hilarious。 A magnetic instructor and mentor in one book。

While Stephen King’s ‘On Writing: A Memoir of a Craft’ has some good advice, especially with revising, it’s not enough。 We really need diversify our writing book recommendations to fellow writers。

Me pareció excesivo e irreal teniendo en cuenta el panorama literario cuando se comienza o incluso tienes una buena seleccion de publicaciones pero no eres autore de best sellers。 。。。more

Growing up, the name Stephen King took on a near-mythical status for its relation to horror, to that tapered off forbidden section of adult things I wasn’t privy to。 I’d often hear people - family, school librarians - talk about ‘That Stephen King book, oh that scared me。’ And so I got into him as a teen, first through From A Buick 8 then to The Dark Tower and then onto everything else。 So coming at On Writing, as a reader and a guy that loves to write, wants to write, was both riveting - his sn Growing up, the name Stephen King took on a near-mythical status for its relation to horror, to that tapered off forbidden section of adult things I wasn’t privy to。 I’d often hear people - family, school librarians - talk about ‘That Stephen King book, oh that scared me。’ And so I got into him as a teen, first through From A Buick 8 then to The Dark Tower and then onto everything else。 So coming at On Writing, as a reader and a guy that loves to write, wants to write, was both riveting - his snapshot memoir is short, sweet, straight to the point and just damn readable - and really informative and laidback。 His approach to writing - its inspirational but insightful and educational。 There are a lot of gems to be discovered here about writing situationally and not getting bogged down with plot — or advice for new writers, all the while providing useful information without being a dry, rigid text。 And then there’s On Living, which is tense and anxiety-inducing for how horrifying it was - being struck by the van, not knowing what was going on, fading in and out of life。 I felt that to my core。 I am grateful he is still with us, writing and telling wonderful yarns。 。。。more

Mostly memoir, not as much a book on how to write。 I liked the book, still finding King a bit pretentious, but I have some different respect for him now。 I appreciate his emotional honesty about himself。 May pick up an actual book of his now。
