Summary

Osprey's survey of the recipients of the Knight's Cross and Oak-Leaves awards during World War II (1939-1945)。 The remarkable early successes of the armed forces of the Third Reich prompted the decision that the supreme decoration for personal valour or outstanding leadership – the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross – was insufficient。 To mark further acts of gallantry a new distinction was created in June 1940: the Oak-Leaves clasp。 Further decorations in the form of the Swords and, finally, the Diamonds were added。 This second title in our series describes and illustrates a selection of recipients of the Knight's Cross and Oak-Leaves between 1941 and early 1944, when the Wehrmacht was engaged on all fronts, as well as at sea and in the air。

One of the ways to tell your soldiers they are a "Super Race" is to hand out a lot of medals。 Hitler, then, might be the premier hander-out of medals of the 2oth Century。 This Osprey Elite Series book addresses "Winners" of the Knight's Cross and the Oak-leaves that signified Multiple winners。 The book features the usual Osprey Colour plate section, with action renderings of the actions or post action scenes for Military Enthusiasts/Gamers/Modellers to visualize for scenarios or dioramas。 These One of the ways to tell your soldiers they are a "Super Race" is to hand out a lot of medals。 Hitler, then, might be the premier hander-out of medals of the 2oth Century。 This Osprey Elite Series book addresses "Winners" of the Knight's Cross and the Oak-leaves that signified Multiple winners。 The book features the usual Osprey Colour plate section, with action renderings of the actions or post action scenes for Military Enthusiasts/Gamers/Modellers to visualize for scenarios or dioramas。 These are excellent as usual。 The stories range from the Kriegsmarine exploits of Kapitanleutnant Tiesenhausen who sank The British Cruiser Barham with his U-331, the the Afrika Korps Story of Gefreiter Halm, whose Pak 36(r) AT guns blunted a British Tank attack at Ruweisat Ridge in North Africa, to the Luftwaffe Exploits of Oberleutnant Munchberg who won multiple awards as he climbed to higher commands and eventually 135 confirmed kills in over 500 sorties。 Many of the stories are compelling, and the high number of posthumous awards tells of the savagery of the conflict。 This is for the real Third Reich/Wermacht scholar, or the Enthusiast/Modeller/Gamer, for their is diorama/scenario gold at the end of the rainbow。 Others may find it dry and somewhat pointless。 These are, afterall, heroes of an evil empire。 It is nice to see that a few redeemed themselves with Bundeswehr/Bundesluftwaffe service。 。。。more
