But when Caliza is forced to agree to a marriage between Thia and the crown prince of Illucia, Thia is finally spurred into action。 And after stumbling upon a hidden Crow egg in the rubble of a rookery, she and her sister devise a dangerous plan to hatch the egg in secret and get back what was taken from them。

BIG EXAGGERATED SIGH。 You know, I was really excited about this book。 I love crows。 Elemental crows? Dope, that sounds cool。 And to be honest it starts off strong。 A princess that is crippled by depression and can barely get herself out of bed for six months。 But then her sister is like, guess what hun, you are going to be used as a pawn to broker some well-being between these two nations。 And you have to marry their prince。 And she's like excuse me? The prince of the country that DESTROYED ours and sparked this entire depression in the first place? He's terrible, there's stories about what an awful human he is!And I was yes yes yes! Like a greedy little racoon, I wanted more enemies to lovers。 And she really did not like him for the first 50% of the book。 It was delightful。 I was IN。 But THEN。 (view spoiler)[There's a new boy? And guess what, Thia and newby end up making googly eyes at each other and you're like。。。hang on。。。where did my enemies to lovers go!? So then I was still holding on to hope。 I was like maybe the new boy will betray her! Maybe we'll have some Red Queen nonsense where the guy that you shouldn't be with because you have conflicting opinions is actually the love of your life, and the nice boy is actually a monster。 But no。 There's some back and forth where she's like, hmm, it's weird I have this connection to the prince。 So strange。 And then she goes to hang out with the new guy。 And then she even asks the prince to run away with her and the rebellion。 And he kisses her and she's like WHOA BUDDY, WAIT A SECOND。 Ma'am。 As if you haven't been making eyes at him and confusing this poor man。 You confused me as well! (hide spoiler)]Basically I lost ALL interest in this book after that bait and switch。 What was the plot? Very little。 I was literally thriving off the relationships being created and then。。。 image: ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

I wanted to love this book based on the premise because it sounded awesome。 However, I couldn't get into it。 I just didn't really care about what was going on and felt meh about everyone involved。 I was really interested in the crows and kept waiting for something to happen。 I think I'll keep going in the series because the concepts are pretty cool。 I wanted to love this book based on the premise because it sounded awesome。 However, I couldn't get into it。 I just didn't really care about what was going on and felt meh about everyone involved。 I was really interested in the crows and kept waiting for something to happen。 I think I'll keep going in the series because the concepts are pretty cool。 。。。more

Actual Rating: 3。75⭐TW: animal death, blood, death of a parent, grief, PTSD, self-harm (minor), and violence。Took me a bit to get into this one but once I did, I really enjoyed it。 The depression/PTSD rep was really what brought this book to another level for me and, truthfully? I'd recommend this story for that alone。 Okay, that and the crows were pretty cool。 But my point still stands lol。 Actual Rating: 3。75⭐TW: animal death, blood, death of a parent, grief, PTSD, self-harm (minor), and violence。Took me a bit to get into this one but once I did, I really enjoyed it。 The depression/PTSD rep was really what brought this book to another level for me and, truthfully? A magical world with magical crows。 A little bit of romance, captivity and lots of background details into this world Kalyn Josephson has created。 I liked this one, but I didn't love it。 Which is really how I feel about most YA fantasy these days。 (I think I'm getting too old for it mostly)。 I can't say I was left excited enough to want to read the second one when it comes out。 The cover is super pretty, though! Excellent story full of wonderful characters and emotion and personal anguish (trigger warning for a very well executed example of depression) and, to paraphrase John Mcclain, being That Guy because no one who can。 Docked one star because there was also a lot of "Stop it! At first, I was not quite sure of what I was going to think of this book, but the beginning was quite interesting with the main character Thia going through her ups and downs since her mom had died, and her being forced into a marriage with the prince of the kingdom that killed her mom。 But towards the middle of the book, it starts to go a bit downhill some characters in the book get introduced in the middle that doesn't add much to the story。 In my opinion, some of the things that happen in the At first, I was not quite sure of what I was going to think of this book, but the beginning was quite interesting with the main character Thia going through her ups and downs since her mom had died, and her being forced into a marriage with the prince of the kingdom that killed her mom。 But towards the middle of the book, it starts to go a bit downhill some characters in the book get introduced in the middle that doesn't add much to the story。 In my opinion, some of the things that happen in the book do not make sense。 I do recommend the book but it is not a book I would choose to read again。 。。。more

The idea of crow riders is sooooo cool, but the story is kind of slow and rushed at the same time and other characters besides the MC dont really have a development。 Read this one and the 2nd just out of curiosity for what happens, but would not recommend。

Brown and queer characters。 Good consent and boundary discussion。 Good scheming。 Minimal romance。 Badass women and evil queen。 Cool magic, and he's mix of science too。 Cute animals。 War and kingdoms。。。 I am kinda sick of reading about rich people。 And there is some abuse and violence。 Looking forward to the next one。 Brown and queer characters。 Good consent and boundary discussion。 Good scheming。 Minimal romance。 Badass women and evil queen。 Cool magic, and he's mix of science too。 Cute animals。 War and kingdoms。。。 I am kinda sick of reading about rich people。 And there is some abuse and violence。 Looking forward to the next one。 。。。more

Don't destroy the best part of your world building!!!!Things are okay after that, the spunky princess doesn't want to marry the evil Queen's son, and gets involved in the rebellion and the world building is still okay but with less crows。 I think I'll read the second one, but it was a little underwhelming because it was more just 17 year old drama and an evil Queen who's like, a little mean, but not exactly evil。 The princess does have some trauma from all the stuff she's gone through, so I did appreciate that (why does everyone in fantasy books go through so much and come out emotionally unscathed??), but she also definitely goes "I will choose to not be sad now!!!!!"。 And also her people hated her for being sad for a few months。 Which I did not understand。 Her sister is ruling anyway, why does it matter?? 。。。more

this book exceeded my expectations。i picked it up not expecting too much, but fortunately, i was very intrigued with the elemental world written in the story。 the unique concept of the crows and overall magic system was refreshing。 the romance was okay and sweet, the lead character (thia) is likeable。 i would recommend this book for readers who wants to have a quick and easy read, i will definitely be picking up the sequel when its been released in paperback!

The story started out with a lot of promise and action。 The crows are so cool。 But after the first chapter。。。 the story felt so flat and nothing really happened after that。 There was a weak love triangle, and overall pretty underdeveloped characters。 I really wanted to love this story, but there was just not enough to keep me hooked。 Give me some more crow action and maybe I would have liked it more。

This book is what I would call a "guilty pleasure"。 Why? Because 90% of the book is a will-they-or-won't-they potential romance between the girl main character and the two main male characters。 The crows and crow magic feel barely a part of this story at all。In addition, I had trouble keeping track of who was who and the different lands and kings/kingdoms。 I managed to figure out the main characters。 But sometimes a side character would become more important and then I would wonder, who is this This book is what I would call a "guilty pleasure"。 Why? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I don't usually like first-person, so that's my big complaint, but I like it a lot。 The plot is unique, opening with the prologue on the big destructive scene that changes the world as the characters know it。 This does a great job of also making the reader feel like they lost something too, something that rocked their whole world without being fully immersed in the world pre-devastation。 In fact, you only get half of the prologue to really understand what the world was like before The Event, and I don't usually like first-person, so that's my big complaint, but I like it a lot。 The plot is unique, opening with the prologue on the big destructive scene that changes the world as the characters know it。 This does a great job of also making the reader feel like they lost something too, something that rocked their whole world without being fully immersed in the world pre-devastation。 In fact, you only get half of the prologue to really understand what the world was like before The Event, and it's done so well through the eyes of the main character moving forward that it doesn't matter how little time you got to experience it。 --Below this line, there be spoilers--The main character struggles with depression and PTSD, which is also demonstrated well in a very show-don't-tell way that makes it feel more real。Of course, you have to have the edgy male love interest, although I am a sucker for the enemies-to-friends-to-lovers trope (if that is what it becomes, I'm only about halfway through)。 Ericen is a nicely written dichromatic character and I can't wait to see where his development takes him。 I'm withholding the final star mostly because I haven't finished it, and I don't want to laude it if the ending is atrocious (looking at you, HTTYD 3), but I definitely anticipate this becoming a solid 5/5 review。EDITED WHEN FINISHED: Wow this book was really good。 There was the definite disappointment of "boy loves her, she doesn't love him because they're in a love triangle, he gets mad and runs off because she doesn't reciprocate", which made me scowl, but for the most part it was short-lived and he still has an entire book of character development to go。Final review: 4。5/5 - can't wait to read the sequel! 。。。more
