Summary

The world is calling。 Time to answer。

The world’s wonders, continent by continent: A trek through Morocco’s Atlas Mountains。 Sri Lanka’s Hill Country。 A sunrise balloon safari over the Masai Mara。 Canyon de Chelly。 The sacred festivals of Bhutan。 The Amalfi Coast。 Sailing the Mekong River。

In all, 1,000 places guaranteed to give travelers the shivers: sacred ruins, coral reefs, hilltop villages, deserted beaches, wine trails, hidden islands, opera houses, wildlife preserves, castles, museums, and more。 Each entry tells why it’s essential to visit and includes hotels, restaurants, and festivals to check out。 Then come the completely updated nuts and bolts: websites, phone numbers, prices, best times to visit。

1,000 Places to See Before You Die is the world’s bestselling travel book and a #1 New York Times bestseller。 1,000 Places reinvented the idea of travel book as both wish list and practical guide。 As Newsweek wrote, it “tells you what’s beautiful, what’s fun, and what’s just unforgettable—everywhere on earth。” Second edition includes 600 full-color photographs, over 200 entirely new entries。 More suggestions for places to stay, restaurants to visit, festivals to check out。 And along with starred restaurants and historic hotels, you'll also find moderately priced gems that don’t compromise on atmosphere or charm。

300+ pages on Europe。 Less than 70 pages on Africa。 They summed up West Africa in 4 pages。 It was so short that I was reading and saw something in Ethiopia and thought perhaps they’d made a mistake and placed it in the wrong section of the book。 Do you know how big Africa is compared to Europe? Do you know how many experiences there are on the whole African continent? This is just Eurocentric with some thrown in here and there to make it look like it’s comprehensive。 Find something more updated, 300+ pages on Europe。 Less than 70 pages on Africa。 They summed up West Africa in 4 pages。 It was so short that I was reading and saw something in Ethiopia and thought perhaps they’d made a mistake and placed it in the wrong section of the book。 Do you know how big Africa is compared to Europe? What an ignorant biased author。 1000 places to see before you die and you only put 10 most stereotypical photos of the Middle East with desert and camels!! Then put Turkey, Iran, Iraq very briefly as “Asia” not Middle East (face palm。 Learn geography before publishing a book about places in the world?) Heavily biased towards touristy places, using a very white-centric language (“culinary revolution” of Denmark? Simply put any purported travel book that claims the best restaurants in New Delhi are to be found in the Sheraton (no especial shade on the Sheraton but come on。) belongs in the trashheap。

I have always had a bit of wanderlust, so I was very excited when I purchased this book。 I thought that it would have a few more 'adventurous' places to visit, but it does touch on several places that I would like to go。 Not an awful travel guide at all, but it may be a bit boring for those looking for something more exciting。 I have always had a bit of wanderlust, so I was very excited when I purchased this book。 I thought that it would have a few more 'adventurous' places to visit, but it does touch on several places that I would like to go。 Not an awful travel guide at all, but it may be a bit boring for those looking for something more exciting。 。。。more

A well-intentioned gift from a friend for retirement, it was out of date (even though the latest edition) and full of poorly-obscured advertisements for expensive hotels and restaurants that were irrelevant to the person who was to be immersed in their location。Why pay for a hotel that has absolutely no contact with its surroundings, or eat luxurious food that's divorced from the culture that surrounds you?As I tried to use this book to plan retirement trips, I found it as useless as the throwaw A well-intentioned gift from a friend for retirement, it was out of date (even though the latest edition) and full of poorly-obscured advertisements for expensive hotels and restaurants that were irrelevant to the person who was to be immersed in their location。Why pay for a hotel that has absolutely no contact with its surroundings, or eat luxurious food that's divorced from the culture that surrounds you?As I tried to use this book to plan retirement trips, I found it as useless as the throwaway magazines that were no more than hollow reminders of their businesses。 The book became annoying, as I tried to cull information about what sights to see while avoiding the sirens' calls of the various businesses。 。。。more

Beautiful photos with suggestions of what to see in the area。 Was pleased with how many places I have been。

Especially in the past 2 years, I have been traveling internationally and have seen several of the places discussed in this book I have also seen the vast majority of the places in the USA。 Really enjoyed this book。

Places chosen are too random。 Dominated by Europe and USA。

Meredith Koons

As an avid traveler with a lot more places to see, I was disappointed at some of the listings。 Hotels? Restaurants? I thought this would be solely focused on cities or tourist attractions。 Including restaurants and hotels within a city listing makes sense; but including a hotel or restaurant as one of the 1,000 places to see before I die? Not so much。 So many better things to see on this planet than a hotel lobby。

There is a lot to read here -- this book is designed as a coffee-table experience, to be picked up and randomly browsed。 We can all enjoy the vicarious thrill of "visiting" or dreaming about visiting all the obscure and beautiful places outlined。 However, the later edition seems to have diluted the original thrill, by adding extensive restaurant and must-see lists within the major tourist locales like New York City。 This makes the book more of a standard Fodor's tourbook, and less of an aspirati There is a lot to read here -- this book is designed as a coffee-table experience, to be picked up and randomly browsed。 We can all enjoy the vicarious thrill of "visiting" or dreaming about visiting all the obscure and beautiful places outlined。 However, the later edition seems to have diluted the original thrill, by adding extensive restaurant and must-see lists within the major tourist locales like New York City。 This makes the book more of a standard Fodor's tourbook, and less of an aspirational / inspirational list that made the original so successful。 。。。more
