Summary

Sun Tzu's The Art of War has been a vastly influential treatise on military strategy in the east from the time of China's Warring States Period (403-221 BC) onward。 Though its first translation into a European language was only in 1782, the book's significance was quickly recognized and even such towering figures of Western history as Napoleon and General Douglas MacArthur have claimed it a source of inspiration。 Pax Librorum (www。PaxLibrorum。com) now brings readers this highly accessible unannotated edition of Lionel Giles' definitive translation of Sun Tzu's enduring masterpiece。

While many military tatics described seem to be very good, I think Sun Tzu overlooked a few valuable strategies, such as hitting your enemy with a very fast car。

The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy's not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable。 I don't think this is a book one can rate。 Would you rate Bible? The two are somewhat similar because they represent a certain way of thinking that reached us from the very old times。 It does not feel like something one can measure from the position of today。Maybe the The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy's not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable。 I don't think this is a book one can rate。 Would you rate Bible? The two are somewhat similar because they represent a certain way of thinking that reached us from the very old times。 It does not feel like something one can measure from the position of today。Maybe the only question that could be asked here, therefore, is whether it is still relevant。 And yes, despite being a very old set of warfare advises, it is still very relevant and would probably interest people outside of the military field more than those in it。 Because I suspect that the practical aspect of the book has grown pretty redundant by now。Still, it's an interesting conceptual work of how to carry yourself through life, how to meet difficulties, how to address them, how to be a good leader and make decisions。 It can be inspiring and offer a worthy way of seeing problems anew。Should interest people who are into mindfulness, self-control, discipline, self-motivation, leadership etc。On the other hand, the text itself is very short, most of the book consists of explanations of it, and it's well-written, simple and basic to grasp。 So it's something anyone can read and see what they can take from it。 。。。more

Very interesting! Contains leadership lessons that are still applicable today and strategic insights for anyone interested in the history of warfare。 This is definitely a book that I want to get a nice copy of and keep on my bookshelf。

This is a very interesting book with a lot to think about。

Being a history buff I have known of Sun Tzu's Art of War for many many years。 It has a reputation as an inspiring work and, of course, it has huge historical value。Finally I have it and have read it and, I have to say, I was disappointed。The book is divided into sections on various parts of warfare, from planning and strategy, to the use of fire and spies。 Each of these sections is further divided into "verses", such as you would find in other ancient works like the Bible or the Analects of Con Being a history buff I have known of Sun Tzu's Art of War for many many years。 It has a reputation as an inspiring work and, of course, it has huge historical value。Finally I have it and have read it and, I have to say, I was disappointed。The book is divided into sections on various parts of warfare, from planning and strategy, to the use of fire and spies。 Each of these sections is further divided into "verses", such as you would find in other ancient works like the Bible or the Analects of Confucius。 These are like inspirational quotes。I can see how the book would be a great help to a military commander。 Not only 2,500 years ago when the book was written, but even today。 Though weapons have changed immensely, warfare itself has not really alteted over the millennia。I can also see how businessmen might get something from it。 Some of the verses would be valuable in the competitive world of commerce。 Personally though, I was disappointed in its applicability to my life。A book I am glad to own。 Interesting to me for its historical importance, but not very relevant or practical。 I'd recommend to fans of history and maybe to entrepreneurs。 Anybody else would find the book, despite its brevity, boring I expect。 。。。more

For a book on warfare, it includes some great imagery: "That the impact of your army may be like a grindstone dashed against an egg - this is effected by the science of weak points and strong。" "The quality of decision is like the well-timed swoop of a falcon which enables it to strike and destroy its victim。" "Military tactics are like unto water; for water in its natural course runs away from high places and hastens downwards。"There are also interesting comments on disobeying orders: "If fight For a book on warfare, it includes some great imagery: "That the impact of your army may be like a grindstone dashed against an egg - this is effected by the science of weak points and strong。" "The quality of decision is like the well-timed swoop of a falcon which enables it to strike and destroy its victim。" "Military tactics are like unto water; for water in its natural course runs away from high places and hastens downwards。"There are also interesting comments on disobeying orders: "If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight, even though the ruler forbid it; if fighting will not result in victory, then you must not fight even at the ruler's bidding。"And apt comments on inaction as the best steps to take: "No ruler should put troops into the field merely to gratify his own spleen; no general should fight a battle simply out of pique。" 。。。more

Goodreads is asking me to rate a book on warfare strategy as if I am qualified to determine whether Sunzi's strategies are effective--"No, Sunzi, you should flank the enemy from the left, not the right!" The first deep book I ended up reading at the Forest School this year was The Art of War by Sun Tzu。 Coming up to around two-hundred and seventy-seven pages long, it is pretty short for what the book demonstrates within its pages。 This roughly two-thousand-year-old book written in Southern Shandong, China, is still being used to this day。 The book was initially written about battle/war alternatives, making and keeping alliances, deceit, and overall just military tactics。 However, his writing ha The first deep book I ended up reading at the Forest School this year was The Art of War by Sun Tzu。 Coming up to around two-hundred and seventy-seven pages long, it is pretty short for what the book demonstrates within its pages。 This roughly two-thousand-year-old book written in Southern Shandong, China, is still being used to this day。 The book was initially written about battle/war alternatives, making and keeping alliances, deceit, and overall just military tactics。 However, his writing has been adapted to be used by many different things outside of war。 As the author gives advice on how to beat one's enemy, he also teaches how to choose and approach any conflict in the best possible way for the desired outcome。 tThroughout the book, Sun Tzu, the author, goes through many different potential scenarios and battle strategies at many different angles to view every possible outcome。 The reason behind why he did this was to help prepare for whatever may come your way in battle。 "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles。" (Sun Tzu, The Art of War) With whatever questions that have been asked in the book, they have all seemed to get answered with extended answers and reasons why。 The amount of detail the author goes into on why someone should do this rather than that, and being able to back it up with a substantial amount of reason is quite remarkable to see。 Having all these descriptive battle strategies and other military tactics have also been very useful and adopted by many military academies around the globe。 Clearly, his extreme thoroughness on the subject assisted him in the long run because it is still being used and cherished till this day, and apparently he had never lost a single battle in his whole life。This is the first book that I have read by Sun Tzu, so I can not compare and contrast his writing in different books, but in The Art of War, his writing is immaculate。 He does not write in paragraphs, but instead, he wrote in lines of information with an absurd amount of reason backing it。 No thought is not said without it being supported by evidence and reasoning explaining why。 It is a very well put together and written book and now I understand why it is so highly praised。 I personally really enjoyed reading The Art of War。 It is a really well-written book about strategies and war tactics that could be adopted by anyone to help approach conflict in the best possible manner。 However, I would say this book is not for everyone。 For this is not just a book about war and strategy。 As I said, it is for people to learn about self-improvement in their own personal battles。 This book has changed me by looking at all the different angles of a conflict to make sure I get the outcome I wanted to achieve。 t 。。。more

I expected a notorious book like this to be much longer, so I read it twice。 It was worth it。 The art of war does not only apply to physical confrontation。 This book is a philosophy of life, for everyday we are at war。 The tactics and lessons explained in this book can be easily applied to most situations in life because most of them attach themselves to the attributes of mankind and the world in which we live in。 I found great value in this book and I understand why it is a piece of work that h I expected a notorious book like this to be much longer, so I read it twice。 It was worth it。 The art of war does not only apply to physical confrontation。 This book is a philosophy of life, for everyday we are at war。 The tactics and lessons explained in this book can be easily applied to most situations in life because most of them attach themselves to the attributes of mankind and the world in which we live in。 I found great value in this book and I understand why it is a piece of work that has survived beyond its supposed relevance with the new age ways of war。I highly recommend this to everyone, it is easily digestible philosophy in the form of war tactics。 。。。more
