Summary

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics。

Winston Smith rewrites history。 It’s his job。 Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, he helps the Party, and the omnipresent Big Brother, control the people of Oceania。

Winston knows what a good citizen of Oceania must do: show his devotion for Big Brother and the Party; abstain from all vices; and, most importantly, possess no critical thoughts of their own。 The new notebook he’s begun to write in is definitely against the rules – in fact, the Thought Police could arrest him simply for having it。 Yet, as Winston begins to write his own history, a seed of rebellion begins to grow in his heart – one that could have devastating consequences。

In George Orwell’s final and most well-known novel, he explores a dystopian future in which a totalitarian government controls the actions, thoughts and even emotions of its citizens, exercising power through control of language and history。 Its lasting popularity is testament to Orwell’s powerful prose, and is a passionate political warning for today。

I tried so hard to keep reading this and finish it。 It got to a point where I was just reading words and my mind would wander to other thoughts。 Too boring for my liking!

A friend told me it would take about half the book until you really wanted to keep reading and they were right。 Once there, I struggled to put it down。 Mind you, I read this 20 years ago。For all the times I was told before reading this book that Orwell hated Communism, the book never quite made sense to me。 Funny Farm was a straightforward daily blow-by-blow of Soviet incompetence (a remarkably boring one, at that) but 1984 was only ever presented as Orwell's description of a "negative utopia"。 A friend told me it would take about half the book until you really wanted to keep reading and they were right。 Once there, I struggled to put it down。 Mind you, I read this 20 years ago。For all the times I was told before reading this book that Orwell hated Communism, the book never quite made sense to me。 Funny Farm was a straightforward daily blow-by-blow of Soviet incompetence (a remarkably boring one, at that) but 1984 was only ever presented as Orwell's description of a "negative utopia"。 Well, fair reader, 1984 is about China。 Newspeak is just someone making Mandarin in English, which is what first tipped me off。 Read a history of Mao first and this would probably feel like lazy world-building。 Otherwise fun and reasonably thought-provoking。 I have had no interest in reading it a second time, for whatever that is worth。 。。。more

While I understand why this book is as acclaimed and loved as it is, I did not enjoy reading it。 George Orwell is a great writer who skillfully uses narrative form to push a political agenda (and an important one, at that), but I was never pulled into the story the way a reader should be。

The novel, 1984, by George Orwell。 This is an account of a dystopian society in the year 1984。 This novel was written in the forties and is another science fiction story of what an apocalyptic world looks like。 This story is set in the middle of a world war。 The entire story revolves around Winston Smith, who is the narrator of the novel, and the protagonist。 Smith is constantly being watched everywhere he goes。 Even when he is at home, he is still being watched constantly。 Everywhere he goes, h The novel, 1984, by George Orwell。 This is an account of a dystopian society in the year 1984。 This novel was written in the forties and is another science fiction story of what an apocalyptic world looks like。 This story is set in the middle of a world war。 The entire story revolves around Winston Smith, who is the narrator of the novel, and the protagonist。 Smith is constantly being watched everywhere he goes。 Even when he is at home, he is still being watched constantly。 Everywhere he goes, he has a camera on him, and someone called, “big brother,” watches him through a TV。 Smith struggles with his feelings as he, and everyone else, is constantly being controlled by the rulers。 The rulers are against free speech, love, and freedom of expression。 So, trouble comes in when Smith meets a woman named Julia and fall in love。 They work hard to conceal their relationship, but ultimately, they fail。 The two were taken away from each other and Winston undergoes many brainwashing segments。 In the end, when none of the torture had worked, Smith was taken to Room 101。 This is the last place to go if none of the brainwashing had worked previously。 In this room, patients meet their worst nightmare in order to stand down from being rebellious and to obey the orders of the leaders。 Smith’s biggest fear is rats, so they brought out a cage of rats。 When he saw this, he immediately asks for the suffering to be on her。 He was then let go and no longer has a grudge against the rulers and has accepted “big brother。”I really liked this book, but I did not really like the ending。 I am someone who really enjoys a love story with a happy ending。 Like why couldn’t they run away with each? Why couldn’t they be star crossed lovers like Romeo and Juliet and die for each other?? I just thought it was interested how this book is based on the year 1984 when in 2021, we actually have cameras everywhere。 I could see this as something that may actually happen in the future。 Many people in our generation have used their expression of free speech, which is so cool that our next generation is as vocal as they are, but we have seen many people of the older generations getting upset over this and getting angry that we are fighting for equality。 I feel like books like these, dystopian fictions, really show us an optimistic point of view of our society。 Almost like, “Yeah, our society is bad, but it is not this bad。” It also shows us that we should never let someone control us like this。 The rulers may have domination over society but if everyone rebelled against the rulers then they wouldn’t stand a chance。Questions:If they constantly have cameras on them then how were they able to have an affair? What was Julia’s fear? What caused Smith’s fear of rats? 。。。more

Heartbreaking!! Very interesting, and the dystopian world Orwell created was very well thought out and put together, from the basic governmental structure and political figures to the concept and design of Newspeak itself。 Winston's character was especially dynamic, and all of the other characters were incredibly interesting as well。 Overall, it was a pretty good book, with just a few parts I would recommend skipping over, especially if you're a younger reader。Ages 16+ Very interesting, and the dystopian world Orwell created was very well thought out and put together, from the basic governmental structure and political figures to the concept and design of Newspeak itself。 Winston's character was especially dynamic, and all of the other characters were incredibly interesting as well。 Overall, it was a pretty good book, with just a few parts I would recommend skipping over, especially if you're a younger reader。Ages 16+ 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It is so pretentious when works of low-substance throw in a tragic and horrific endings for their protagonist in an effort to redeem some style points。 In contrast, the theme of 1984 NEEDED the outcome of Winston’s story to get the message across。 Visceral and extremely effective。 My plan was to read Brave New World after this, but I need a break from dystopia novels for a turn。

Never had to read this for school, but I see why teachers think of this as a book everyone should read。 I can’t believe how well the concepts have translated to today and Orwell has an amazing grasp on power dynamics in the world。 Unfortunately reminds me a lot of how right wing media perpetuates disinformation and maintains power。 Definitely dystopian。

Do you ever have a pretty interesting idea for a socially critical book then ruin it with a rape fantasy and being unable to mention a woman without also talking about her honken badonks?
