My, what a finale! (Yes, this was meant as the last book in the series, it was the fans that persuaded the author to return to the Hollows eventually。)Elsbeth is trying to get custody of the girls (yes, even Ray, who isn't actually hers) still/again。 This time, her brilliant plan is to team up with the religious leader of the elves。 Yep, the arrogant asshole trying to get Trent's power, who considers Rachel unnatural and thinks that all demons have to be eradicated。An opening presents itself for My, what a finale! (Yes, this was meant as the last book in the series, it was the fans that persuaded the author to return to the Hollows eventually。)Elsbeth is trying to get custody of the girls (yes, even Ray, who isn't actually hers) still/again。 This time, her brilliant plan is to team up with the religious leader of the elves。 Yep, the arrogant asshole trying to get Trent's power, who considers Rachel unnatural and thinks that all demons have to be eradicated。An opening presents itself for both of them when Ivy's master threatens to kill her if Rachel doesn't finally find a way to return the vampiric souls。 The mystery where the souls go after the first death was actually very interesting (it had been staring us in the face for a long time) but when Rachel succeeds, people find out that they should have been careful what to wish for。The problem is that a plot has been set in motion to destroy the Ever After and thus all magic。 And Trent no longer has the finances or power to stop it。 Moreover, Al is not really in the mood to talk to Rachel (just like the other demons)。 In short, Rachel's and Trent's relationship isolates them - except for from their true friends。 And it is these friends that will band together and even twist other people's arms to do the same and fight for everyone's survival。Demons in our reality, the goddess back with a vengeance, more mystics, sunciding (suiciding by sun) vampires, a babysitting demon, the church getting destroyed, 。。。 this was indeed a finale and it has been fulminant! From annoying-as-fuck Nina and infuriating Elsbeth, to formidable enemies and a gargoyle begging to be allowed to keep a puppy - I had immense fun! Most impressive was to be reminded of Rachel's core, which is also why I like her so much: she doesn't like bullies。 It's why she does what she does。And then there was this:"。。。You all think that security and peace are born from destroying everything stronger than you? There is no safety。 There is no peace but what you make, every day, every second, with every choice。"This, in combination with the racial unrests and distrust, made for one powerful message (I was 100% on board with Rachel (view spoiler)[about keeping the demons mixed with everyone else - one world for everyone (hide spoiler)]。Did I mention that the author is impeccable at sneaking in such timely and utterly important observations in a supposedly shallow genre? She also made that be reflected in the mixture of the different kinds of magic - witchcraft, demon magic, elven magic, wild magic, the ley lines and mystics - and (view spoiler)[the thought of a new world order where the species are forced to work together actively or perish together (hide spoiler)], effectively ending the fear and hatred that had caused the war(s) as well as their results, made me feel all cozy and warm (view spoiler)[despite or maybe exactly because of the "becoming" of the goddess / Newt when Rachel made a new Ever After (hide spoiler)]。 :)The culmination of every decision made, of every encounter, of all the magic in its different forms was wonderful - though at times I wasn't sure I could survive all the thrill and tension。 So yes, this was a worthy end to one of the best fantasy series I can imagine, but I am more than glad that the author decided to return to the Hollows。P。S。: I was so nervous when I figured out there was (view spoiler)[a time jump of 27 years (hide spoiler)] in the end and (view spoiler)[started tearing up about Ray calling Rachel "mom" (touched) and when I heard that Rachel no loger lived with Jenks (sad) (hide spoiler)]。 。。。more

I recently discovered that Kim Harrison started writing Rachel Morgan/The Hollows books again in 2020, six years after completing the original series, which spanned the years 2004-2014。 Before I read her newest books, I wanted to re-read the last two books in the original series to refresh my memory。 This book is the finale of the original series。 Rachel finally has to tackle the series arc challenge of using her magic to return souls to the vampires。 The discovery of where the lost souls are wa I recently discovered that Kim Harrison started writing Rachel Morgan/The Hollows books again in 2020, six years after completing the original series, which spanned the years 2004-2014。 Before I read her newest books, I wanted to re-read the last two books in the original series to refresh my memory。 This book is the finale of the original series。 Rachel finally has to tackle the series arc challenge of using her magic to return souls to the vampires。 The discovery of where the lost souls are was brilliant。 After this discovery, the story goes off into some convoluted directions and gets stuck in some repetitive storylines for a while。 However, the conclusion was a satisfying end to the series。 Quite a few of the primary series characters receive their happy endings, and not all in a predictable fashion。 I’m looking forward to reading the new books and am excited to see where Harrison picks up the story。 。。。more

I wonder if I'll ever read this。 I loved the series (though it got weird in the last instalments) but it felt really wrong that Rachel ended up with Trent, because hot damn is he an abusive, malicious and powerhungry asshole。 I also read the first chapters of this before it was released and was disappointed。 Then I peeked at some reviews once the book was published and had my worst expectations confirmed, Rachel was such a great character at one point, but she isn't in this book。 I wonder if I'll ever read this。 I loved the series (though it got weird in the last instalments) but it felt really wrong that Rachel ended up with Trent, because hot damn is he an abusive, malicious and powerhungry asshole。 I also read the first chapters of this before it was released and was disappointed。 Then I peeked at some reviews once the book was published and had my worst expectations confirmed, Rachel was such a great character at one point, but she isn't in this book。 。。。more

I honestly don’t think that those giving this book bad reviews have actually read the book。

Honestly, I only enjoyed two moments: when Rache finally stood up to Cormel (well, technically it was twice but Trent, my idiot babe, ruined it) and when Al finally called her his "itchy witch" again after all those fights。 The latter still warms my heart, actually。Other than that。。。The plot goes repetitiveEveryone except maybe Jenks annoy the hell out of meNewt?!OTP makes me feel nothing 90% of their timeWhere was Jon in the last 27yrs-later chapter??Guilt, self sacrifices everywhere, savior co Honestly, I only enjoyed two moments: when Rache finally stood up to Cormel (well, technically it was twice but Trent, my idiot babe, ruined it) and when Al finally called her his "itchy witch" again after all those fights。 The latter still warms my heart, actually。Other than that。。。The plot goes repetitiveEveryone except maybe Jenks annoy the hell out of meNewt?!OTP makes me feel nothing 90% of their timeWhere was Jon in the last 27yrs-later chapter??Guilt, self sacrifices everywhere, savior complex。。。 Was she always like that?Ugh。 I hate all the vampires except Ivy and all elves except Trent, Jon and often Quen。With great power, blah blah blah。。。 Rachel gets all the responsibility and more, but where the heck is the power? I had to is thought that if Rachel was murderous enough and got rid of her nemesis, she would be spared some trouble。 Imagine her killing Nick, Piscary, Ku'Sox, Landon etc。 early enough。。。 Her life would be easier。So the author actually ended the future/final chapter with "The Beginning" (the same i did to whoesoe!) which is nice。。。 But idk。 Rachel basically got engaged without the ring in the middle of her daughter's wedding ceremony。 Not even the party, but the main thing。 Eh。Idk if that's because since book #7 i ve been reading The Hollows in English instead of my native language, but despite my seemingly impossible non canon otp getting together, i feel like the series was so much better in the first half。I m gonna take a break from The Hollows until June when #15 is coming out。 We'll see if #14 and later book will bring back All The Rachel Glory。 I have my fingers crossed for some enemies to allies to friends on the Rachel vs Jon front。 And Lee。 I miss the guy。But mostly? Fingers crossed for Rache to grow a pair (again or finally?) and take over some position of power。(I got a headache while reading it。 Coincidence?) 。。。more

***finished rereading on dinsdag 9 februari 2021***I stayed up until half past two reading this。。。 I don't know why but I did got to start with American Demon and since a week my dreams were calm。I'm still tired though and can't remember what I thought directly after finishing the book。Cormel was a douche, some people you never hear from again, weird how my notes from a few years ago still hold up, my partner was shocked that I wrote with a pencil in my book which is always amusing。***EDIT 29/01 ***finished rereading on dinsdag 9 februari 2021***I stayed up until half past two reading this。。。 I don't know why but I did got to start with American Demon and since a week my dreams were calm。I'm still tired though and can't remember what I thought directly after finishing the book。Cormel was a douche, some people you never hear from again, weird how my notes from a few years ago still hold up, my partner was shocked that I wrote with a pencil in my book which is always amusing。***EDIT 29/01/2016***I really don't know why I adore this series so much。 I mean Rachel can be pretty annoying after a while。 But then she does something kickass (using her feet instead of magic just because。 Or she is chillin' somewhere with her friends and then I'm like IIIHHHH。I read an negative review about this book (Ferdy's review ) and I well I couldn't disagree with her。 But my readers enjoyment was so intens。 Like I said earlier。 Rachel felt real to me。 And so all her annoying traits were just part of her。 I don't like perfect heroines because no ones is。***Alert possible spoiler alert***(view spoiler)[And her relationship with Trent。。。 Well I wouldn't mind if she ended up with Ivy。 But I also thought that she could've ended up alone and it would be fine because she has people。 Still I got why she ended up with him even do he was an massive douche in the beginning。 He was someone who broke the rules in order to save his species and found it hard to come back from that。 Rachel on the other hand was a massive douche with her holier than thou attitude but came to see the world in gray colours and learned not to judge people。 Still I wouldn't have mind if she killed someone。 But it's good to have standards。Still one nagging question。。。 What the fuck happened to Bell? Also I still think Ceri deserved to be named in this book at the end。 (hide spoiler)]*FIRST REVIEW 09/07/2014*I didn't read this book in go。 What surprised me at the beginning。 But now it's over and I enjoyed every page。 I can't give a long enthusiastic speech about how much I love this serie and why。 My English is not good enough for that。 But I will say that Rachel for all her faults is a wonderful person。 And how many writers can make someone speak about a fictional character as if they were real? I love the Hollows series and well I cried a little when I read the last two words。 To think I will never read what goes on in Rachel's crazy life makes me sad。 But oh what a good ending! I'm grateful Kim Harrison wrote the last chapter。 It really finished the story。 Without any nagging questions open or a: what-the-f*uck-just-happened feeling。 Now my next thing to enjoy this serie is to get all the books in hardcover! And read them all over again! 。。。more

This was so good。 Only just shy of 5 stars。

Courtney

The last book of the series。 3 stars because it wrapped everything up in a nice little bow, but only 3 because the first 50% was insanely slow and the main character is a shell of the badass she once was in book 1。

Audrey Cienki

DNF。 Reached chp 4 and just had to stop。 Can Rachel even do anything any more without Trent? Especially after the way he treated her。 I just can’t take more whining。

Loved it! But I’m confused。。。will American Demon start off with Rachel and Trent married? Or will it start off 27 years ago, right after Rachel fixes everything?

Alealea

For a powerful badass, the main is one again pressured into doing things against her will (a lot and a lot)。 This trope is ANNOYING。 The fact that there is a good boom at the end AND the HEA is not enough to save the book。

I just don't see how Nina couldn't get her soul right back。 What Rachel does is put Nina's soul into Ivy。 When Nina drinks blood from Ivy, Nina is sipping her own aura。 Hunh。Newt becomes the new Goddess after a metaphysical battle, one that provides the distraction Rachel needs to restore the ever after and the demons to make new ley lines after Landon and elf friends manage to snap all of the previous ley lines and plunge Cincinnati into a magicless wasteland。 Except Rachel because even though Newt altered her aura, mystics still found her。Another thing I don't understand。 The mystics are clinging to and following Rachel around and responding to her wishes, but Rachel can't hear them。 And she's safe from the goddess until she isn't but nothing really changes to have the goddess find her。 This and other previous facts that have changed from book to book frustrated me this series。Aloysius is the Rachel tamer。 It still amazes how he changed so much from the earlier books so he'll forever be Aloysius to me and not Trent。 The devotion to Rachel and the support is the stuff of dreams and happy ever after stories。 Aloysius hardly let Rachel out of his sight, and when they were together, it was tons of PDA, partnership, coordination, and a merging of intent。 Aloysius is like the perfect guy。 And Rachel let's Aloysius be that guy in a way she wouldn't for the other men she dated in this series。 Where she got pissed at Pierce, Aloysius doing the same hardly causes a batted eye lash。 The best thing though is Rachel finally found something with Aloysius and he's not letting her go, no matter what, and in defiance of the loss of much of his money, influence, and business interests。 He's still slicker than the law since he completely converted his brimstone fields just before he could be caught, too he moves his illegal research before the labs could be found。 Maybe it's an elf thing to hold on to what they love in such a way。 Aloysius doesn't regret it and soothes Rachel's insecurities。Speaking of which, being in Rachel's head this book was painful。 The constant bemoaning about how she's not got for or good enough for Aloysius, how she's interfering with him and Ellasabeth having a family with the girls, how she's costing him everything by staying with him, how it's not going to last so she should let him go, and how Aloysius needs someone else by his side gets tiring。 She goes on similarly throughout THE WHOLE BOOK。 It even comes up 27 years later。 It was the single most unenjoyable thing about reading this one。 At the end, it's 27 years later and Aloysius and Al have figured out how to get demons and elves to be able to procreate。 A baby and wedding seem to be in a future for Rachel and Aloysius, Rachel having raised the girls with Trent sans ceremony at that he would keep his influence with the elves。 Apparently marrying a woman he can't have kids with is a huge no but they're okay now。 Ray is marrying one of the demon Rosewood babies that Rachel had Trent save。 Goody for them too because more elf and demon kids。 Al is an actor who does his own stunts。 Jenks is still around, about time for another spell to prolong his life some more。 Ellasabeth is around and so are Takata, Rachel's mom, and Lucy。 Demons are out of the ever after but integrated with society。 Dali officiates Ray's elven wedding ceremony。 The end。 。。。more

I love this series。 I started it years ago and when I found out it was ending with this book I couldn't continue。 I saved this one and the one before and never read them。 I just wasn't ready to say goodbye to Rachel, Jenks, Ivy and my favorite, Al。 This year, the author brought back the characters with a new series as a continuation of this one so it was time to catch up。 This is a paranormal series but more importantly it is a series about friendship。 The paranormal stuff is just the sprinkles I love this series。 I started it years ago and when I found out it was ending with this book I couldn't continue。 I saved this one and the one before and never read them。 I just wasn't ready to say goodbye to Rachel, Jenks, Ivy and my favorite, Al。 This year, the author brought back the characters with a new series as a continuation of this one so it was time to catch up。 This is a paranormal series but more importantly it is a series about friendship。 The paranormal stuff is just the sprinkles on top。 It feels good to be back! 。。。more

Huh? Whoah, whoah, wait!! How did y’all work things out AFTER?!?!? Nope。 Nada。 Nothing。 Big climatic fight, turn the page, BAM! 27 years later and the girls are grown up。 We do see all our beloved characters and they seem fine but we have no idea how it all worked out after the big events。 The one thing that absolutely dumped those stars, however, is the fact that after spending that much money on 13 books and hundreds of hours of my life reading and waiting for Rachel to get her happy ending, we are rewarded with her having spent 27 years as Trent’s little piece on the side while he got everything back。 Yep, they never married yet she helped Ellasbeth raise his kids and lived with them! THAT’S what I read 13 books to see? *shakes head and rolls eyes*。 What a monstrous disappointment。 。。。more
