I came into the book, intrigued with a person who apparently was coaching many of the top executives of Silicon Valley。 And there's a lot to learn and think about。 Most of the concepts weren't foreign to me as it's some of the same that's typically touted in business articles and books about leadership and management。 What's probably extraordinary is that this one person did it before the knowledge was more commonplace。 The book isn't really hard to read, it's sometimes or most times quite inele I came into the book, intrigued with a person who apparently was coaching many of the top executives of Silicon Valley。 And there's a lot to learn and think about。 Most of the concepts weren't foreign to me as it's some of the same that's typically touted in business articles and books about leadership and management。 What's probably extraordinary is that this one person did it before the knowledge was more commonplace。 The book isn't really hard to read, it's sometimes or most times quite inelegant in arriving to the point。 The blueprint is apparently, anecdote, anecdote, anecdote, key point。 And some of the anecdotes are so singularly focused that there's no nuance in them。 The book is completely devoid of any criticism of any negatives of Campbell's coaching style but has kept the good parts and perhaps also minimized some of the bad parts。 I will definitely take some of the learnings with me and in many cases reinforce what I already believe in。 As for the book, I've read better ones that encompassed the principles but as a cheat sheet it's probably good enough。 。。。more

A quick read with some useful insights, but not a playbook by any stretch of the imagination。 The authors do a great job of painting an interesting picture of Bill Campbell, but the book lacks structure and depth。 It feels like a compilation of quick tips - many of which either commonsensical or basic leadership advice。 Had the book presented a framework for effective coaching, or perhaps a structured set of principles, it would have been much better。It's clear that Campbell was a fascinating gu A quick read with some useful insights, but not a playbook by any stretch of the imagination。 The authors do a great job of painting an interesting picture of Bill Campbell, but the book lacks structure and depth。 It feels like a compilation of quick tips - many of which either commonsensical or basic leadership advice。 Had the book presented a framework for effective coaching, or perhaps a structured set of principles, it would have been much better。It's clear that Campbell was a fascinating guy, but the authors worship him constantly。 They also engage in quite a lot of name-dropping。 This irritated me a bit。 Nevertheless, I don't regret reading it。 I learned very little, so I would recommend reading this book if you're 1) really interested in Campbell or 2) looking for some coaching inspiration。 。。。more

A nice read。 Refreshing and resetting。 Obviously there was nothing earth shattering, but it’s great to stay centered and focused on people and this book reminds us to do that。Takeaways and quotes:- A study on the benefits of cussing in the workplace? Smells like BS, and more like cussing in the workplace shows a certain amount of personal comfort。 That personal comfort and confidence is what is beneficial in the workplace。- What is my value as a manager? Heavy on form, name dropping and somewhat adolescent fascination with foul mouthing in business setting, but light on substance。 Being direct, holding effective 1:1s, valuing different perspectives and speaking the truth that others don’t want to hear is obvious, but the book doesn’t offer many insights about exactly how influential people like Campbell arrived at these key realisations at the right time。

This book doesn’t do justice on Bill the coach。 I would appreciate it to be more succinct and need more substance, although there are pockets of wisdom i picked up from the book。

An interesting book about a great coach; more of a biography than a book about coaching there are a few nuggets if you aren’t familiar with leadership coaching。 Not what I was expecting but I enjoyed learning about John Doerr and others

From the book, one can understand Bill Campbell is an extraordinary coach。 He could maintain deep relationships with his coachees and could make them thrive。 The book is more like a collection of stories from Bill's experience coaching multiple silicon valley leaders。 I would give 3* only because it falls short of few things, 1) The arguments on how effective Bill's leadership style was more anecdotal and very less data or research-based。 The points raised would have been more solid if they are From the book, one can understand Bill Campbell is an extraordinary coach。 He could maintain deep relationships with his coachees and could make them thrive。 The book is more like a collection of stories from Bill's experience coaching multiple silicon valley leaders。 I would give 3* only because it falls short of few things, 1) The arguments on how effective Bill's leadership style was more anecdotal and very less data or research-based。 The points raised would have been more solid if they are backed by relevant data。2) Concrete one-liner tips at the end of each chapter were good。 But the tips were not considerate of the various industry domains, company sizes, organisational dynamics。 。。。more

Interesting, short, + helpful。 Very readable too From seeing the other reviews it’s p clear that if ur looking for deeper leadership advice u might not like this, bc it is admittedly much of the same: build relationships, psychological safety is important, ‘earn’ leadership, don’t tell ppl what to do instead ask them a lot of questions abt the situation, etc etc BUT seeing how Bill put everything into practice + how he was able to positively influence so many ppl is what kept me reading Only thi Interesting, short, + helpful。 Very readable too From seeing the other reviews it’s p clear that if ur looking for deeper leadership advice u might not like this, bc it is admittedly much of the same: build relationships, psychological safety is important, ‘earn’ leadership, don’t tell ppl what to do instead ask them a lot of questions abt the situation, etc etc BUT seeing how Bill put everything into practice + how he was able to positively influence so many ppl is what kept me reading Only thing I didn’t love - The comparison bw the struggles of a Black man in a predominantly white workplace with Bills struggles + the comparison bw Bill and women in predominantly male environments。 In general, the parts of the book that covered diversity were very surface level。 In that respect the book felt like it was written 20 years ago lol 。。。more

I loved how candidly, motivating and beautifully written this book is。 It is a story of friendships, support and being human even in the fast paced Silicon Valley’s world。 It supports not only what the big companies and leaders think, but my own belief that people come first ALWAYS!

I think if you're in tech, this book should be in your must-reads。 The book is not very in-depth but it introduces you to one of the most prominent and yet not-so-talked-about figures of Silicon Valley, Bill Campbell。 There is a lot to learn about Bill and his attitude and manners towards the people around him, and his team-building techniques; it's so interesting to know that many of the team practices and spirits present in tech companies today were developed and practiced first by Bill。 After I think if you're in tech, this book should be in your must-reads。 The book is not very in-depth but it introduces you to one of the most prominent and yet not-so-talked-about figures of Silicon Valley, Bill Campbell。 There is a lot to learn about Bill and his attitude and manners towards the people around him, and his team-building techniques; it's so interesting to know that many of the team practices and spirits present in tech companies today were developed and practiced first by Bill。 After reading this book, you can't help but to think Bill is the convergent point of many great tech leaders from Steve Jobs, to Eric Schmidt, Larry and Sergey, Sundar Pichai, and many more。 。。。more

My main takeaways from this book are:- be genuine- NEVER FAKE IT! - Put people first and lead- You can have manager in your title but that doesn’t help you to lead - Care about others and be present when they need you- Act for the benefit of the team - Don’t be led by egoThe only problem that I have with this book is it’s generalization based on one case。 I would prefer to focus on values and find people that could respect those values in their life and work。 Bill Campbell was a great coach, wit My main takeaways from this book are:- be genuine- NEVER FAKE IT! - Put people first and lead- You can have manager in your title but that doesn’t help you to lead - Care about others and be present when they need you- Act for the benefit of the team - Don’t be led by egoThe only problem that I have with this book is it’s generalization based on one case。 I would prefer to focus on values and find people that could respect those values in their life and work。 Bill Campbell was a great coach, with no doubt, and it takes decades until someone with the same impact appears! 。。。more

Easy enough to read and it was illuminating to see a style of leadership I consider as aspirational presented in the book。 The examples and evidence were limited and that dampens the effect of the values that are espoused because there aren’t real narratives to make them memorable。 But perhaps for advice that I hope will become more common place given how self evident it seems the authors don’t consider it entirely necessary?
