The book didn’t age well。 The stereotyping of Asians specifically was terrible。 I wanted to enjoy the book, but the stereotyping of populations ruined it。

Entiendo la época en la que se escribió, pero el racismo es simplemente un no por mi parte。

Becca Crane

Worst Roald Dahl book。 The plots is so disjointed and I just don’t think there is anything interesting about the characters in this one。

Good for an amusing read。 Strange sequel。

Quite surreal a lot of the time, but fun too, and the kids enjoyed it。

Dude, this book is just wild。

Reads like two Charlie/Wonka short stories crammed together with no particular rhyme or reason, and neither story feels like Dahl especially cares about them。 Nothing special, but not a chore to read either。 I have the feeling my son will remember nothing of it in a few weeks。

This book is。。。so weird。 And there’s blatant anti-Asian racism in an early chapter and scattered throughout。 Not much would be lost if the Dahl family did as the Seuss foundation did and pulled this one out of production。 It's still creative in its use of language and plot, but it functions as two stories in one。 The first story really has nothing to do with the characters or themes of the first book。 The second one continues the theme of "morality lessons" for senior adults。 If he wanted to wri This book is。。。so weird。 And there’s blatant anti-Asian racism in an early chapter and scattered throughout。 Not much would be lost if the Dahl family did as the Seuss foundation did and pulled this one out of production。 It's still creative in its use of language and plot, but it functions as two stories in one。 The first story really has nothing to do with the characters or themes of the first book。 The second one continues the theme of "morality lessons" for senior adults。 If he wanted to write a book in outer space, I'm not quite sure why he took this set of characters there, except for the sheer absurdity。 It feels like a collection of story scraps that shouldn't have made it into published book form。 The racism makes it really unpalatable to current readers。 。。。more

this book was bananas, but imaginative and my daughter liked it (though slightly scary for a 5 YO)

Well this was a weird book。 I liked the first one a lot more。 I guess aliens aren’t really my thing。 Ha ha。 Roxie enjoyed it though so it was still fun reading it to her。

Not as good as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory。 It just wasn't as fun。 Still, I enjoyed it well enough but I don't think I'll read it again。 Not as good as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory。 It just wasn't as fun。 Still, I enjoyed it well enough but I don't think I'll read it again。 。。。more

This book was fun to read with the kids。 Not as good as the Chocolate Factory。 It’s takes more than a few weird turns。 Enjoy!

I remember reading and tremendously enjoying this book back when I was 8 or 9。 I read it again for the first time as an adult, and was considerably less impressed。I love the fact that the story is absolutely f*cking bonkers even by the standards of Roald Dahl's imagination。 The silly puns still elicit a smile (though not the childish gigglefit of yore)。But the whole thing comes across as a set of independent story ideas shoehorned into a single book。 It lacks the cohesiveness of Chocolate Factor I remember reading and tremendously enjoying this book back when I was 8 or 9。 I read it again for the first time as an adult, and was considerably less impressed。I love the fact that the story is absolutely f*cking bonkers even by the standards of Roald Dahl's imagination。 The silly puns still elicit a smile (though not the childish gigglefit of yore)。But the whole thing comes across as a set of independent story ideas shoehorned into a single book。 It lacks the cohesiveness of Chocolate Factory, and is therefore not as satisfying a read。 。。。more

I have heard that most of Roald Dahl’s books began as stories he told to his own children。 I imagined that he was telling this story, with different voices, and with singing, and with dramatic pauses, and I thought it must have been delightful。 There was excitement, with narrow escapes, and lots and lots of silliness。But as an adult, who had just read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I was disappointed。 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had a cohesive story arc: contest is announced, contest p I have heard that most of Roald Dahl’s books began as stories he told to his own children。 I imagined that he was telling this story, with different voices, and with singing, and with dramatic pauses, and I thought it must have been delightful。 There was excitement, with narrow escapes, and lots and lots of silliness。But as an adult, who had just read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I was disappointed。 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had a cohesive story arc: contest is announced, contest plays out, contest has a winner。 Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator seemed like two random short stories stuck together (although Dahl does tie them together at the end)。 Flawed as I thought it was, Chocolate Factory had some meaning and moral message。 Glass Elevator seemed to be just pure silliness-- random (again with the word “random”) entertaining events。 Now silliness and entertainment for children is not at all a bad thing, and I know I am not the intended audience, but I think my expectations were too high。 This book reminded me of fanfiction, where people like the characters so much that they invent new stories for them to be in, although this one was written by the original author, and not by fans。In the first plot line the great glass elevator flies up and up until it is in space, where it encounters an orbiting space hotel, some American astronauts, and some hostile space aliens。 In the second plot line, back at the chocolate factory, Willy Wonka tries to convince the three remaining bedbound grandparents get up, with the help of one of his products, the energizing Wonka-Vite。 Naturally, it doesn’t work quite as expected。 It’s funny, it’s got clever word play, it’s a quick engaging read, and all that is good, but it’s no Charlie and the Chocolate Factory。 。。。more

Unfortunately, compared to his other work, it falls extremely flat, especially compared to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory。 Story didn't make much sense, and not really alot happens with a sudden ending that makes no sense。 Felt quite disappointed since he's an amazing children's author。 Unfortunately, compared to his other work, it falls extremely flat, especially compared to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory。 Story didn't make much sense, and not really alot happens with a sudden ending that makes no sense。 Felt quite disappointed since he's an amazing children's author。 。。。more

Read it for the first time with the girls and we all were like WTF。 Seemed weird and disconnected。 Grasping for something。

Un poil en dessous du premier mais bien quand même。

I think this book is fantastic because Charlie and his family also Mr。 Wonka went many place that is very amazing and they met many people。 For example they met the oldest person in the world and they went to the space hotel U。S。A, the astronaut in the space hotel think they are very weird so they go to many fantastic place in great glass elevator。

This wasn’t at all what I was expecting from this book。 I found it to be quite boring and the most racist of all of Dahl’s books that I’ve read so far。 I was ready to quietly set it aside and pick up another book to read aloud but my 7 year old kept asking for it specifically, so maybe he’s in the ideal age range for this ridiculousness? Probably。

🧡This the what happened next adventure or Willy Wonker and Charlie。 Charlie has won the wildest dream of imagination and is travelling in the great glass elevator where it can go up,down, side ways, diagonal and any way you can think of。 So much so that they end up in space where the fantasy world clashes with the real world and confuses all of the people down on earth。 High recomend this as and adventure story or a well known childrens book

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Charlie and his family take trip with Mr。 Wonka in the great glass elevator。 The elevator goes much farther than intended and they come into contact with the horrible Vernicious Knids。 It all ends well with an invitation to the White House for Charlie, his family, and of course Mr。 Wonka。

Oh boy。 Was he drunk? Bored? Playing a prank on us? The book was straight up bonkers, but not in a good way。 Crass characterizations。 A plot that meanders through space and time and setting literally in space and also a hell-like, underground layered work-camp "factory" complex。 I cringed often while reading。 Not his best。 Oh boy。 Was he drunk?
