Summary

Two siblings。 Two brilliant talents。 But only one Mozart。 Born with a gift for music, Nannerl Mozart has just one wish--to be remembered forever。 But even as she delights audiences with her masterful playing, she has little hope she'll ever become the acclaimed composer she longs to be。 She is a young woman in 18th century Europe, and that means composing is forbidden to her。 She will perform only until she reaches a marriageable age--her tyrannical father has made that much clear。 And as Nannerl's hope grows dimmer with each passing year, the talents of her beloved younger brother, Wolfgang, only seem to shine brighter。 His brilliance begins to eclipse her own, until one day a mysterious stranger from a magical land appears with an irresistible offer。 He has the power to make her wish come true--but his help may cost her everything。 In her first work of historical fiction, #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu spins a lush, lyrically-told story of music, magic, and the unbreakable bond between a brother and sister。

A beautiful historical fiction。 Lu compels the reader to step into the shoes of a forgotten figure, who had impacted the world greatly, while mixing in fantastical elements to capture the soul of anyone wanting to make a difference。

Nannerl is the forgotten Mozart sibling, just as brilliant as her brother but overlooked because of her gender。 But when a mysterious faery appears in her bedroom, she has the option to be the one history remembers。 Hyacinth's fulfillment of her wish comes with a price, however, and Nannerl has to choose between her brother and immortality。I first learned about Nannerl Mozart in the Magic Tree House book, The Magic Flute, about Mozart。 It was a silly book, and I promptly forgot all about Nannerl Nannerl is the forgotten Mozart sibling, just as brilliant as her brother but overlooked because of her gender。 But when a mysterious faery appears in her bedroom, she has the option to be the one history remembers。 Hyacinth's fulfillment of her wish comes with a price, however, and Nannerl has to choose between her brother and immortality。I first learned about Nannerl Mozart in the Magic Tree House book, The Magic Flute, about Mozart。 It was a silly book, and I promptly forgot all about Nannerl。 Even in a modern children's story, she was overlooked as the responsible, demure, girl who accompanied her brilliant brother。 To be fair, Woferl was annoying in the book。 But Nannerl deserves better, and this book brings to light all the ways the society, and more specifically her father, failed her。 It was an excellent book that highlights what we lose when we shut women out。 。。。more

DNF 53% Very intriguing premise, too slow, wanted more page time in the actual Kingdom, don’t really care about the fancy rich people scene。

I honestly loved this story。 It was so well crafted。 I can tell this whole book was born out of a passion for the characters。 Apparently, it took Marie 12 years to get the story ready to be published。I appreciated that the story had fantasy and action threads but the bigger story is about Nannerl Mozart's talent, position in society, and her journey from child to adult。 I loved that the storyline didn't scream through as though hyped up on fight scenes。 This deviates from most current action-pac I honestly loved this story。 It was so well crafted。 I can tell this whole book was born out of a passion for the characters。 Apparently, it took Marie 12 years to get the story ready to be published。I appreciated that the story had fantasy and action threads but the bigger story is about Nannerl Mozart's talent, position in society, and her journey from child to adult。 I loved that the storyline didn't scream through as though hyped up on fight scenes。 This deviates from most current action-packed stories was refreshing。 I'll be buying this one for my bookshelf。 。。。more

4 starsWelcome to what I like to call: Areej buys anything by Marie Lu even though she has no idea what it is about。I have odd mixed feelings about this story。 On the one hand it was creative, intriguing and a good commentary on how women were depicted throughout history and the importance of critically examining what we think we know。 But, on the other I am not completely solidified in how I feel about the main character, sometimes she irritated me and sometimes the fantasy element confused me。 4 starsWelcome to what I like to call: Areej buys anything by Marie Lu even though she has no idea what it is about。I have odd mixed feelings about this story。 On the one hand it was creative, intriguing and a good commentary on how women were depicted throughout history and the importance of critically examining what we think we know。 But, on the other I am not completely solidified in how I feel about the main character, sometimes she irritated me and sometimes the fantasy element confused me。 Sometimes the plot felt like it dragged a little and I was constantly fearing that sickness would overtake everyone。 The plot was slightly predictable too, overall reading it was interesting enough and I am glad I finished it, but Marie Lu definitely has much better works and seeing as she wrote this at 23 years old - her writing since then has improved a lot。 。。。more

There was a distinct Pans Labyrinth feel to this book。 It was a little slow moving but I loved the rare mixture of historical fiction and fantasy。 It’s incredible that Lu based The Kingdom of Back of an actual creation by the Mozart children。 My class preformed a play in sixth grade about Mozart and one of the leads was Mozart’s sister so I was surprised that Lu had not heard of his sister after admiring him for so long。 I had assumed it was fairly common knowledge that they traveled and perform There was a distinct Pans Labyrinth feel to this book。 It was a little slow moving but I loved the rare mixture of historical fiction and fantasy。 It’s incredible that Lu based The Kingdom of Back of an actual creation by the Mozart children。 My class preformed a play in sixth grade about Mozart and one of the leads was Mozart’s sister so I was surprised that Lu had not heard of his sister after admiring him for so long。 I had assumed it was fairly common knowledge that they traveled and performed together as children。 It is interesting to think about how much talent/artwork we’ve lost due to discrimination。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 First I was sketchy about reading a book about music but I'm glad I did because it was truly magical。 I loved the fantasy element regarding the Mozart's。 Ever since reading many faerie books I was weary about the bargain as it sounded to good and that's when I first had my suspicions for Hyacinth。 The only problem I have is the misogyny because my god I wanted to pull out my hair every time the father did something to criticize Nannerl。 I have to say that Hyacinth gives me Luc vibes from "The In First I was sketchy about reading a book about music but I'm glad I did because it was truly magical。 I loved the fantasy element regarding the Mozart's。 Ever since reading many faerie books I was weary about the bargain as it sounded to good and that's when I first had my suspicions for Hyacinth。 The only problem I have is the misogyny because my god I wanted to pull out my hair every time the father did something to criticize Nannerl。 I have to say that Hyacinth gives me Luc vibes from "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" but worse。 I'm glad he got what he deserved and their sibling relationship was everything I knew what the ending would be like but it still made me very upset I'm a bit sad about it。 。。。more

I picked this book up because I have a background in music。。。。。as well as reading some books on my shelf so I could get rid of them if they aren't something I think I'll read again。The story is one that is one of those whimsical type fantasies with a twist of Neil Gaiman (a little dark) which I've learned just aren't my thing。 I would give it 2 stars (it was okay) but I think it would be perfect for someone who likes those types of stories。 So I'm going to give it 3 stars (liked it)。 I picked this book up because I have a background in music。。。。。as well as reading some books on my shelf so I could get rid of them if they aren't something I think I'll read again。The story is one that is one of those whimsical type fantasies with a twist of Neil Gaiman (a little dark) which I've learned just aren't my thing。 I would give it 2 stars (it was okay) but I think it would be perfect for someone who likes those types of stories。 So I'm going to give it 3 stars (liked it)。 。。。more

I haven't read a book as beautiful as this before。 The way music and the kingdom of back were described were simply perfect。 From the moment I read the first chapter I knew it was going to by one of my favourite books。 When I learned that Mozart really had a sister as talented as him in the end I started sobbing。 I don't really know why。 If you haven't read it yet go pick it up and start reading。 I haven't read a book as beautiful as this before。 The way music and the kingdom of back were described were simply perfect。 From the moment I read the first chapter I knew it was going to by one of my favourite books。 When I learned that Mozart really had a sister as talented as him in the end I started sobbing。 I don't really know why。 If you haven't read it yet go pick it up and start reading。 。。。more

This book is both magical and musical。 It tells the story of a girl who wasn't supposed to compose and whose talent was overlooked and overshadowed by her brother。 I wasn't a fan of the fantasy part of the book, but eventually I started to appreciate it。 Although I still wish that there was more focus on Nannerl's journey and the siblings relationship afterwards。 This book is both magical and musical。 It tells the story of a girl who wasn't supposed to compose and whose talent was overlooked and overshadowed by her brother。 I wasn't a fan of the fantasy part of the book, but eventually I started to appreciate it。 Although I still wish that there was more focus on Nannerl's journey and the siblings relationship afterwards。 。。。more

Rating: 2。5 / 5There is nothing inherently wrong with this book other than it being veeeerry slow at times, but I could not connect with it at all。 I didn’t care about the characters or the plot and the “plot twist” was very obvious。 This book wasn’t for me but I would maybe recommend it to my younger cousins。

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 4 starsThe Kingdom of Back is a historical fiction about Nannerl Mozart, the older sister of Wolfgang, who has the wish to be remembered forever。 This story is super fascinating!
