Summary

In the beginning there was…a turtle。

Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place which might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different。 Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown)。 It plays by different rules。

But then, some things are the same everywhere。 The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land。 Unfortunately, the person charged with maintaining that survival in the face of robbers, mercenaries and, well, Death, is a spectacularly inept wizard…

Quite far-fetched for me。 Suitable for teenagers to embark into a fantasy, hilarious and strange world。

Couldn’t get into the humor。 I’m glad others like it!

This was okay。 The second half of the book was better than the first。 Lots of people have told me that The Colour of Magic isn't the best in the Discworld series, so I will probably persist and see what The Light Fantastic has to offer。 This was okay。 The second half of the book was better than the first。 Lots of people have told me that The Colour of Magic isn't the best in the Discworld series, so I will probably persist and see what The Light Fantastic has to offer。 。。。more

Read this for a book club and。。。 meh。 The world was super interesting, and it had some funny lines。 But all in all I just found it kind of boring, not a lot of substance。 Listened to it on audio and had trouble focusing on it, ultimately just rushing through it much faster than planned because I wanted to get it done and over with。 This seems to be a common opinion for this particular book however, even among Pratchett fans, so I'm still going to keep trying books in this world。 Read this for a book club and。。。 meh。 The world was super interesting, and it had some funny lines。 But all in all I just found it kind of boring, not a lot of substance。 Listened to it on audio and had trouble focusing on it, ultimately just rushing through it much faster than planned because I wanted to get it done and over with。 This seems to be a common opinion for this particular book however, even among Pratchett fans, so I'm still going to keep trying books in this world。 。。。more

Couldn’t finish it。 Far too weird for me!

Far from the best example of Pratchett's genius but still brilliant bit of fantasy Far from the best example of Pratchett's genius but still brilliant bit of fantasy 。。。more

Wow, I thought short book, not going to be much of a story。 I was wrong。

Had that classic spirit of adventure! Plus a nice mixing of fantasy and scifi elements。

7/10It took me a little bit to get into Pratchett's style of writing, which was a bit more whimsical and less serious than I'm used to, but I really enjoyed it!The story was light but by no means weak, and I think that just gave Pratchett the opportunity to explore the world on A'Tuin's back, including the gods that rule it and a little about the magic woven throughout it。 I look forward to reading a few more of the fourty-one(!!!) books, getting to know more of the characters more deeply! 。。。more

I think if you are a Pratchett fan, and know his work, then you will enjoy this book。 However, I would not have enjoyed it as much if I had not read some of his later books first。 I would recommend reading some of his later work before coming back to this book。 Still, brilliantly satirical, funny and immersive。

Just not my cup of tea-our funnies aren't meshing well, unfortunately。 And apparently this isn't the best place to start with this series (at least from what I've heard)。 Maybe will revisit Discworld some other time with a different book。 dnf @ 20% Just not my cup of tea-our funnies aren't meshing well, unfortunately。 And apparently this isn't the best place to start with this series (at least from what I've heard)。 Maybe will revisit Discworld some other time with a different book。 dnf @ 20% 。。。more

I just don't think that absurdist fiction is for me。 This is a good book, it just wasn't for me。 It was too absurd, I did not like being pulled from the story for side information。 And some of the things that happened were just ridiculous。 I can see why people love it, it is just not for me。 I do plan to continue, but I think I might like it better through audio。 I just don't think that absurdist fiction is for me。 This is a good book, it just wasn't for me。 It was too absurd, I did not like being pulled from the story for side information。 And some of the things that happened were just ridiculous。 I can see why people love it, it is just not for me。 I do plan to continue, but I think I might like it better through audio。 。。。more

I enjoyed the other Discworld books I have read more than this one。

Maybe a good start to a series?

Cass Simpson

I read this some time ago but have recently decided to read the whole Discworld series from start to finish。 I had forgotten the comic genius and brilliant lateral thinking Terry Pratchett brought into our lives。

Marvellous! Imaginative! and disjointed in the best possible way。 Fear the luggage。

Timothy Pitkin

The setting is really cool and the idea of a guided tour through the world for the first book of the series allows the story to just explore its setting。 The humor is interesting especially with some the translation jokes which did make me crack up a bit。

Steven

Meh。 Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it。 Felt like it was trying a bit hard to be silly。 I’ll attempt a few more I think。

I had heard that the first Discworld novel is a bit unrefined and actually not a strong entry point for the series。 This turned out to be pretty true。 I found the world-building stuff fun and interesting, but The Color of Magic was really all over the place and pretty taxing at times。 If I return to the series, I'll likely skip ahead to one of the more acclaimed entries。 I had heard that the first Discworld novel is a bit unrefined and actually not a strong entry point for the series。 This turned out to be pretty true。 I found the world-building stuff fun and interesting, but The Color of Magic was really all over the place and pretty taxing at times。 If I return to the series, I'll likely skip ahead to one of the more acclaimed entries。 。。。more

Strange characters and a strange world。 Sometimes the long nonstop sentences were difficult to decipher。 I simply couldn't get into it, but because it is a really short read, I pushed myself to read to the end hoping the story or the characters would capture my interest。 They didn't。 In defense of my meddling rating for a book much loved by others, this is not the type of fantasy I gravitate to, but I wanted to give it a shot because so many people praise the Discworld series。 I may try another Strange characters and a strange world。 Sometimes the long nonstop sentences were difficult to decipher。 I simply couldn't get into it, but because it is a really short read, I pushed myself to read to the end hoping the story or the characters would capture my interest。 They didn't。 In defense of my meddling rating for a book much loved by others, this is not the type of fantasy I gravitate to, but I wanted to give it a shot because so many people praise the Discworld series。 I may try another one in the series, just to see if another story and its characters might be more to my liking。 。。。more

There were lots and lots of little legsWords to describe this book。。。I've been a fantasy reader a long time。 I've read some terrible fantasy novels。 I've read some amazing ones。 I've read some in between ones。This is probably one of the best books I've ever read。 It takes the tropes of fantasy novels and turns them upside down, spinning out into the multiverse, and everywhere in between。 I don't know what I was expecting when I read this but it wasn't this。 It was hilarious and, while not as tho There were lots and lots of little legsWords to describe this book。。。I've been a fantasy reader a long time。 I've read some terrible fantasy novels。 I've read some amazing ones。 I've read some in between ones。This is probably one of the best books I've ever read。 It takes the tropes of fantasy novels and turns them upside down, spinning out into the multiverse, and everywhere in between。 I don't know what I was expecting when I read this but it wasn't this。 It was hilarious and, while not as thought provoking as later novels by him, it still forces you to look at fantasy novels in a different light。 And that ending, after several read throughs, is just brilliant。 Wow。 。。。more

I liked it, but it was so hard to read。 Maybe I just lack imagination。There were bits where I felt like dropping it, and then there were bits were I felt like it was my favourite book。 My head is confused。

3。5, looking forward to continuing this series。
