Calvin and Hobbes was a formative comic for me in many ways。In particular， far before I entered into the world of academic Philosophy I was reading the words of Hobbes （named for 17th century English philosopher Thomas Hobbes） and bothering people with speculative far too big-for-my-boots questions about purpose and happiness。 I like to think I learned a little something from Hobbes， but I think most importantly I learned kindness from Bill Watterson。

When I was a kid， I would occasionally read Calvin and Hobbes， typically on a Sunday。 I have to admit I didn’t “get it”， although I wasn’t the most aware kid at the time。 Sure， some of the adventures Calvin took as Spaceman Spiff or pretending to be a dinosaur were entertaining， but I never grasped what was really going。Fast forward years and I decided to read the entire strip straight through and I’m certainly glad I “waited” all of these years to do it。 Now that I’m much older and a father， I When I was a kid， I would occasionally read Calvin and Hobbes， typically on a Sunday。 I have to admit I didn’t “get it”， although I wasn’t the most aware kid at the time。 Sure， some of the adventures Calvin took as Spaceman Spiff or pretending to be a dinosaur were entertaining， but I never grasped what was really going。Fast forward years and I decided to read the entire strip straight through and I’m certainly glad I “waited” all of these years to do it。 Now that I’m much older and a father， I can appreciate what Watterson has done。 He’s tapped into that inner youth， that era of creativity and imagination， when the world was just opening up to you， and when you were still the primary focus of your parents。 As an adult reading this， you’re able to reminisce about the seemingly endless summer days of fun， coming up with stories while interacting with toys， wishing you didn’t have school because of the trials and tribulations of teachers and homework。 These stories allow us to relive our youth and remind us of probably the only era of pure joy in our lives。Conversely， as a parent， I can see behavior in Calvin that was in my child: the wish to stay up late， the preference to watch TV instead of going outside， lack of desire to do chores， the belief that they are the smartest person in the room， etc。 Seeing how Calvin’s parent’s both react to and deal with his behavior evokes a nodding of understanding， empathy and sympathy。 They are parents who are simply trying to raise a child with the right motivations， ethics and values， while at the same time trying to teach them the ways of the world without stifling what makes them unique。 But this all comes at a cost， which is really the definition of parenthood。Throughout the strip， Watterson uses Calvin’s unparalleled genius to pontificate on the world at large， gripe about the state of society and ponder the meaning of life。 Whether it’s about pollution， the effect of advertising on children， or simply the idea of enjoying what we have， Watterson adds a depth and conscience to this strip that elevates it above simple one-offs that only entertain for a couple of minutes。Sometimes I’d like to see what Calvin is doing with his life when he is older。 But then it dawned on me: I already know。 He’s drawing a daily comic strip about his life。Some favorites:Anything to do with snowmenThe time Calvin cut his own hairWhen Calvin couldn't wait for his beanie to arriveHobbes teasing Calvin about Susie being his Valentine 。。。more

The Quote that defines Calvin & Hobbes' by Bill Watterson to its very core and that we all wish we could apply to our own lives:In the short term， it would make me happy to go play outside; in the long term， it would make me happier to do well at school and become successful。But in the VERY long term， I know which will make better memories。so this was brilliant but i already knew that。 yet while reading it i confirmed that a） my favourite strips are still the ones with Calvin making freaky snowm The Quote that defines Calvin & Hobbes' by Bill Watterson to its very core and that we all wish we could apply to our own lives:In the short term， it would make me happy to go play outside; in the long term， it would make me happier to do well at school and become successful。But in the VERY long term， I know which will make better memories。so this was brilliant but i already knew that。 yet while reading it i confirmed that a） my favourite strips are still the ones with Calvin making freaky snowmen - it never EVER fails to make me laugh it's almost like magic haha b） I realised some things about Calvin's father this time - how their dynamic can be extreme opposites but also how much the Dad actually has a lot to do with the kid's active imagination and even his rants about society！ it's probably something super obvious so it was funny to notice this while reading the complete thing， and what kinds of criticism Watterson intended in certain sequences - it just made me wanna hug Bill even more;c） I LOVED the redemption of Rosalyn in her last appearance - I almost cried watching Calvin and her playing together instead of him tormenting her haha it was a heart warming surprise， really （which was enhanced with Dad's skeptical reaction: "It's awfully late for jokes， Rosalyn" heh）。d） Hobbes is not just an imaginary friend， man - he is Calvin's self-awareness and common sense but just like everything else， he kinda fails at his task cause Calvin's desire to have fun is way more important than listening to reason。 questioning things is one of C's hobbies and H's always there to debate the validity/intrinsic goals of the explorations。e） Galaxoid and Nebular deserve a spin off， hahaha。overall， the psychology behind Calvin and Hobbes is fascinating。 the philosophy and poetry of it is wonderful。 not to mention the constant irony， cynicism and arrogant stubborness of a six year old that translates as endearing， peaceful aphorisms？！ ^^ I'm so glad Bill Watterson came up with this little kid and his stuffed tiger awwww I'm emotionaaaal :'）"It's a magical world， Hobbes ol'buddy。。。 Let's go exploring！THAT LAST STRIP DESERVES FIVE MILLIONS STARS ALONE！！ HOW NOT TO LOVE THIS， HUH？！ ;-; 。。。more
