Summary

Why do naturally talented people frequently fail to reach their potential while other far less gifted individuals go on to achieve amazing things? The secret to outstanding achievement is not talent, but a passionate persistence。 In other words, grit。

MacArthur Genius Award-winning psychologist Angela Duckworth shares fascinating new revelations about who succeeds in life and why。 Based on her cutting-edge research, Duckworth shows how many people achieve remarkable things not just by relying on innate natural talent, but by practising what she calls grit。 She then offers a Grit Formula to help anyone to become more gritty, focusing on six key factors: hope, effort, precision, passion, ritual and prioritisation。 She reveals:

- Why people who test high for talent often fail to achieve their potential, and why people who do not test high for talent often "overachieve" what others expect them to do
- How grit can be learned, whatever your IQ or circumstances
- Why stubbornness is a key characteristic of gritty people
- When to be stubborn and when giving up is the grittiest thing you can do
- How gritty people found their passion, and you can find yours
- How gritty experts practise, and how you can do the same in your own life
- What the people who care about you can do to boost your grit when you need it most
- How grit is cultivated in the highest-performing sports teams, companies and schools

Leaping past clichés such as 'success is all about hard work', Grit offers a fresh and motivating way to climb to heights far beyond what natural talent would predict。

Grit is what I do not have。 how it can be cultured and what makes people extraordinarily success::: is really well explained with scientific facts and personal anecdotes in a very balanced way; made me rethink about how I can change for better in my life

Angela Duckworth made a very compelling case why grit matters。 I liked how she connected grit to finding purpose and meaning。 She also provided a framework for growing grit which was very comprehensive although I would have asked for more from the "outside-in" aspect。 I'm taking away great insights on personal development and some models to digest。 I will definitely read it again。 Angela Duckworth made a very compelling case why grit matters。 I liked how she connected grit to finding purpose and meaning。 She also provided a framework for growing grit which was very comprehensive although I would have asked for more from the "outside-in" aspect。 I'm taking away great insights on personal development and some models to digest。 I will definitely read it again。 。。。more

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perserverence definitely falls squarely into the category of feel-good self-help books。 That being said, I really think that the core message is a positive one and Duckworth does an excellent job combining anecdotes and academic literature to hammer it home。 As one of the referenced studies concludes: many people aspire to be grittier, but nobody aspires to be less gritty。 Reading the book has motivated me to take stock of my own grittiness, and to take action to i Grit: The Power of Passion and Perserverence definitely falls squarely into the category of feel-good self-help books。 That being said, I really think that the core message is a positive one and Duckworth does an excellent job combining anecdotes and academic literature to hammer it home。 As one of the referenced studies concludes: many people aspire to be grittier, but nobody aspires to be less gritty。 Reading the book has motivated me to take stock of my own grittiness, and to take action to improve it。 。。。more

A lot of blablablaShe really like to speak about herself。。。 I am not a big fan of anecdotes that come one after another。 She could have lay out her points in 20 pages and I will not have to go through the torture of listening to her explain how awesome she is。 She also explained how gritty she is, but she also speak of the many different careers she had。 It seemed to contradict her own point sometimes, not really a big but a little funny。

My sister-in-law recommended this book to me because she thought I would resonate with it。 It has become my favorite audio book this year; but with full disclosure, it is my favorite football coach’s inclusion of her principles as criteria for future job candidates that has drawn me to her content and argument based on her empirical research。 An interesting read that seems to back up common sense that it’s how we respond to our trials that determine our character and journey in life。

Fascinating for the right personGreat book。 Informative。 Enlightening。 I have a few problems with it which I've put below。 I don't think I'm the intended audience and I hope anyone else who feels like me will read it with some warning。 It's an interesting read, but as someone who is neurodivergent (adhd) it was a little discouraging in some parts。 The definition of grit from the beginning felt unfair。 Basically it described someone who doesn't have adhd。 I would also like to understand why cert Fascinating for the right personGreat book。 Informative。 Enlightening。 I have a few problems with it which I've put below。 I don't think I'm the intended audience and I hope anyone else who feels like me will read it with some warning。 It's an interesting read, but as someone who is neurodivergent (adhd) it was a little discouraging in some parts。 The definition of grit from the beginning felt unfair。 Basically it described someone who doesn't have adhd。 I would also like to understand why certain people have more grit than others or how to go from not having it to having it。 Do upbringing, financial position or support networks have anything to do with it? I don't see how those crucial aspects were fully investigated。 I think this book is encouraging if you're already a natural achiever and don't struggle with executive functions。 Maybe you just need a kick to keep going or a reminder to persevere。 I didn't see much about getting through the difficult circumstances in life that you need to overcome before you can even dream of achieving things, like homelessness or unemployment without any support。 I think surviving those things is a whole other kind of grit and requires the same tenacity it does to do things considered to be success in the book。 。。。more

She’s not wrong。 Perseverance is very is an important personality trait for success。 However, it’s like she’s found a hammer and everything looks like a nail。 She wants to make it paramount, when it’s only a piece of the puzzle and success isn’t always measured by achieving the pinnacle in one endeavor。

Angela Duckworth has written this wonderful book that should be required reading of every coach, teacher, mentor, teen, and anyone who is passionate about something。 She writes very informatively on what exactly grit is and why perseverance can be more important than IQ or genetic advantages。 She comes from a long background in psychology and backs up her claims with both scientific evidence and personal anecdotes from individuals she has worked with。This will forever be the book I turn to whene Angela Duckworth has written this wonderful book that should be required reading of every coach, teacher, mentor, teen, and anyone who is passionate about something。 She writes very informatively on what exactly grit is and why perseverance can be more important than IQ or genetic advantages。 She comes from a long background in psychology and backs up her claims with both scientific evidence and personal anecdotes from individuals she has worked with。This will forever be the book I turn to whenever I need a little inspiration or when I found myself down on my luck。 The concept of grit is something we should all try to embody in our everyday selves。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'm giving it 4 stars because this book has actually helped me out of a slump。 The concept behind grit is super valuable for anyone who feels like they can't follow through on things。 That being said there were some parts of the book that rattled on and deviated substantially。 This book would be better if it were broken into two separate books。 "Developing Your Own Grit" and "Parenting for Grit" I'm giving it 4 stars because this book has actually helped me out of a slump。 The concept behind grit is super valuable for anyone who feels like they can't follow through on things。 That being said there were some parts of the book that rattled on and deviated substantially。 This book would be better if it were broken into two separate books。 "Developing Your Own Grit" and "Parenting for Grit" 。。。more

Very good book! This has been on my reading list for years , glad to have finally read it ! The psychology of Grit and its underlying use of deliberate practice, hope, purpose, passion and perseverance, was very interesting and thought provoking。

- TL;DR if you are going through something difficult, don't give up。 You might go through hell, but don't give up。 Okay?An 'okay' (slightly disappointing) book。 I have a hard time finishing。Tapi ada beberapa bagian yang intriguing dan menarik buat dibahas。 Intinya, buku ini ngobrolin gimana grit (passion + persistensi) itu akan jauh berpengaruh lebih dari sekedar bakat, yang tentunya disertai argumen, data, dan berbagai pendapat pakar。 Ada juga bahasan growth mindset dan parental tips (yang aku - TL;DR if you are going through something difficult, don't give up。 You might go through hell, but don't give up。 Okay? Malah, dia justru terus-terusan mengulang ide dia dengan memberi contoh dan studi kasus lain。 Ekspektasi aku cukup gede karena buku ini direkomendasikan oleh para influencer muda & keren。Clearly, we can see how smart Duckworth is。。。 but if only she took more time to redefine her definition of success and grit (by acknowledging socioeconomic and racial diversity issues), this book will be so much better。 。。。more

Ive never written a book review but I literally hated this book。 I think that’s because it’s literally the whitest book I’ve ever read that wasn’t assigned through a class。

I would have given it a 5/5。 The kind of repetitive writing and message towards the end made it feel a little dragged on。 I loved the message, research and Duckworth's voice。 Especially was a fan of when she would relate her theories, questions and findings to her personal life。 I would have given it a 5/5。 The kind of repetitive writing and message towards the end made it feel a little dragged on。 I loved the message, research and Duckworth's voice。 Especially was a fan of when she would relate her theories, questions and findings to her personal life。 。。。more

A book of two halves。 The first half was exciting, educative and stimulating while the second half was boring, draggy and even downright unnecessary。

I really enjoyed the first ~100 pages; great perspective for dealing with imposter syndrome or setbacks while working towards a goal。 Strong argument that effort is more important than talent for achievement。The rest of the book was both more prescriptive and more anecdotal, and I found it less engaging。 In the end, I’m not sure I agree with Dr。 Duckworth’s definition of success, and I felt she was idolizing a certain type of “successful” person, including herself。I’m happy to take away the mess I really enjoyed the first ~100 pages; great perspective for dealing with imposter syndrome or setbacks while working towards a goal。 Strong argument that effort is more important than talent for achievement。The rest of the book was both more prescriptive and more anecdotal, and I found it less engaging。 In the end, I’m not sure I agree with Dr。 Duckworth’s definition of success, and I felt she was idolizing a certain type of “successful” person, including herself。I’m happy to take away the message that effort matters more than talent, but there are a lot of other factors, which were glossed over, that matter as well。 。。。more

Highly recommend! This book is pretty dense so it took me awhile to get through, but the research on grit is fascinating。 I appreciate all of the real life stories and persons that Duckworth included to break up the research - we all can be gritty!
