This entry in "The Wheel of Time" is all about character development, plot is quite distinctively secondary。 In that respect I can understand how some people may not like A Crown of Swords, but for me the strong focus on character absolutely works and I would even go as far as to claim that it is exactly what the series needs at this point。 (view spoiler)[At the end of Lord of Chaos, so many of the still very young protagonists are thrust into position of unprecedented power and/or responsibilit This entry in "The Wheel of Time" is all about character development, plot is quite distinctively secondary。 In that respect I can understand how some people may not like A Crown of Swords, but for me the strong focus on character absolutely works and I would even go as far as to claim that it is exactly what the series needs at this point。 (view spoiler)[At the end of Lord of Chaos, so many of the still very young protagonists are thrust into position of unprecedented power and/or responsibility: Egwene being raised to the Amyrlin Seat, Nynaeve and Elayne being raised to full Aes Sedai, Mat being in charge of an army, Perrin having to learn how to behave as husband to a woman at least equally as powerful as himself, Rand suddenly gaining the upper hand over the white tower and the rebel Aes Sedai emissaries and being pitted against the most capable schemer among the Forsaken, in the shape of Sammael。 They all have to grow into the roles given and they do so successfully。 Elaida goes from virtually being the mistress of the world (in the prologue she does not yet know of the battle of Dumai's Wells) to a virtually powerless, ravingly mad puppet of the Black Ajah。 And despite her only being given two point of view sections, it is handled brilliantly。 Robert Jordan is a master of characters and he displays his mastery across 800 pages to perfection。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

"A Crown of Swords" finds itself caught in an interesting debate。 Is it the start of the infamous slog or is it not? As a reader I was worried when I heard that some people said yes because this is only the halfway point in the series。 So I braced myself and hoped for the best。 All I can say is this: "A Crown of Swords" is the most underappreciated book in the series。 And the good outweighs the bad。 Pros: Some of the characters experienced a lot of growth in this book。 Rand continues where he left off and I really liked it。 I personally wanted more of his struggles and insecurities, especially when around more people。 Then the take charge attitude comes into play and I really liked it。 Especially when he stripped Colvaere of her title。 But surprisingly enough, his chemistry with Min was very well done! Min once and for all proves her value here。 She is the support Rand needs。 She's not condescending like Elayne, or confusing like Aviendha。 She's to the point and quite honest with him。 She's willing to be vulnerable around him just like he is with her。 She's the rock that he needs to lean on。 Some of my favorite parts in this book are when these two are together。 They make an adorable couple to be honest and it's earned。 Well done Mr。 Jordan。 Now I'm already familiar with the name Cadsuane。 So her arrival here sounds promising。 I look forward to what she's to do next because she sounds like a boss。 Hopefully Jordan gives her a lot to do because I've heard nothing but great things about her。 Don't let me down Jordan! And finally bringing the Seanchan back will make things a whole lot more interesting。 I still can't believe that they haven't done anything since book two。 They went from pointless to significant。 Now, lets see what he has instore for them。 Nynaeve and Elayne experience some growth as well。 Nynaeve still shows she's strong-willed but her vulnerability around Lan was earned here。 Robert Jordan teased us enough of this, so the timing here was right for her to marry Lan。 Even though her attitude towards Mat and most of the guys is still frustrating。 Elayne for once actually owes up to her mistakes and actually apologizes! Even though she had to do it twice。 To be frank, I'm conflicted with her。 One minute I like her, next minute I'm very annoyed。 Again, she swallowed her pride and did the right thing。 Whereas Nynaeve refused to do so。 But we all know what I've been waiting for。 My boy Mat ran off and ate the cake! Mat finally took centerstage and it was awesome! His humor was on full display。 His camaraderie with his men and Olver was great。 The friendship with Birgitte did catch me by surprise and it was a nice breath of fresh air。 His action sequences were terrific。 And his hilarious interactions with anybody had me laughing or smiling the whole way。 Yes even his moments with Tylin (more on that)。 I also appreciate the fact that Mat is the only guy who has common sense because he tries VERY hard to convince the girls that they gotta go and avoid danger。 And he stands his ground。 But what made me happy was when he called out Nynaeve and Elayne (thru Birgitte) that he's still upset with how he was treated in "The Dragon Reborn"。 I knew that was gonna come back! And thankfully it was resolved。 And Mat has Aviendha to thank for that。 Robert Jordan is phenomenal with action sequences。 They're very cinematic。 Mats fight with the Gholam could be easily staged like a John Wick scene。 The surprise attack from the Seanchan was well done and it leaves new possibilities open。 But Rands' fight with Sammael was awesome。 it was energetic and didn't slow down at all。 Much like a domino effect。 A complex game of cat & mouse if you will。 I'm not convinced Sammael is dead by the way。 No body, then he ain't dead unless otherwise。 Also, I want to know who saved Rand in Shadar Logoth。 It was either Logain, Moridin (Ishmael re-incarnated?), or Demandred。 And I'm ruling out Demandred。 Jordan also did a great job with the Forsaken。 He gave us some Moghedien, a taste of Moridin, a touch of Graendal, but his best work is with Sammael。 Jordan gave us a villain who was very methodical in his planning。 His reasoning for being secretive are understandable。 But his planning has to be admired。 You have to admit, this guy knows how to have a plan to the plan and it's pretty cool。 I also liked how intimidating he could be。 So far, he's the only other Forsaken whose developed nicely after Ishamael, Lanfear, and Asmodean。 Cons: Robert Jordan did Perrin dirty。 Again。 I understand he wants to devote more time to other characters, but don't sacrifice Perrin after he went through such a transformation from the 1st book。 come on man。 It just felt like he was here just to be here。 He really served no purpose unless it had to deal with Faile。 Speaking of Faile I'm quite disappointed with how Jordan handled her。 She started annoying, but then became very likeable。 Now I'm frustrated with her because Jordan hindered her。 Come on man! She can be more than a bossy b!%。 Thom, Loial and Juilin have been reduced to very small roles。 That's unfortunate because they got off to such strong starts。 Morgase felt pointless because the only thing significant was that she was able to escape the Whitecloaks through the Seanchan。 That was it。 Now it's suggested that she was raped so that changes things; then she renounced her throne to basically no one。 I'm befuddled with her。 Honestly, Jordan could've cut her out of this book and we'd miss nothing。 Elaida just annoys me。 I understand why she took the Seat but to be honest, she strikes me as a one-dimensional character。 She either gets mad, frustrated, or happy。 But her little investigation into Alviarin could change things so I'll hold back for now。 And can someone remind me why we need a perspective from Sevanna? And if Sammael is really dead I'll be very upset。 His supposed death is the equivalent of slipping on a banana peel! This will be the death of Jordan (pun not intended) but he's introducing too many new players to the game。 Cadsuane, the Kin, Caraline, Tomar。 It's starting to get out of control。 Jordan needs to either tone it down or find some use of them, otherwise these characters will be regarded as pointless。 And we the readers don't want that。 To be fair I find the Kin interesting。 but he should choose one member and stick with them。 Not multiple women。 And lack of Egwene was strange。 Her chapters felt a little pointless。 Then again, at least they didn't drag。 And her discovering and freeing Lan did play a huge role so I'll let this slide。 And while I'm happy Lan is back and he marries Nynaeve and speaks more I just want one thing: GIVE HIM MORE TO DO! And finally Tylin。 I liked her。 But her behavior towards mat is VERY questionable。 she goes from flirtatious, to stalking, to bullying。 And then She finally corners him。 I'm not sure Jordan intended this, but she comes across a bit rapey towards mat。 Especially when they finally have their moment。 But to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if he meant for mat and Tylin's relationship to be more comedic because Jordan has Mat clearly state that he likes chasing, not being chased。 And he constantly turns red whenever she's mentioned。 honestly, I found his interactions with her to be funny。 Then again, Nynaeve and Elayne did lose points with me when they laughed at Mat when he tried to explain to them that Tylin takes things a little to far。 Not cool girls。 Not cool at all。 Honestly I don't know, maybe someone can explain Tylin and Mat better to me。 Overall: This was an enjoyable book with warts and all。 A lot does happen here。 There's plenty of action and romance around。 The pacing was pretty good and I wouldn't mind more of it。 Certain characters continue to grow, others need more attention。 It's another solid entry, and I can assure first time readers that the slog does NOT start with this book。 As I said, this book is underappreciated。8/10 。。。more

Without spoiling anything, this includes the return of a certain OG character and Jordan continues his maze of plot twists and turns akin to Game of Thrones but more interesting。

Considering that is the middle of the WoT saga, Crown of Swords manages to set in motion some of the most important character development arches, paving the way for a second part of the saga full of twists。 A tad wordy, mainly because of the repetitive descriptions of the world, clothes and habits of the characters but nevertheless it was an enjoyable reading。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I give up on rating, these books regularly have rampant sexism, racism, victim shaming, etc。 In this one, the author literally made fun of a man for getting raped repeatedly。 So I’m rating for story。

This was between a 2。5 and 3 for me。 I did enjoy this one to an extent, but I was disappointed。 After reading the final scene in Lord of Chaos and the prologue in this book I was excited to devour this one, my expectations raised by those great endings/beginnings, but I was let down。 I did enjoy the politics that played out in this installment but there wasn't much action and it felt like it could have been shorter。 I am totally committed to finishing this series but there are many things that i This was between a 2。5 and 3 for me。 I did enjoy this one to an extent, but I was disappointed。 After reading the final scene in Lord of Chaos and the prologue in this book I was excited to devour this one, my expectations raised by those great endings/beginnings, but I was let down。 I did enjoy the politics that played out in this installment but there wasn't much action and it felt like it could have been shorter。 I am totally committed to finishing this series but there are many things that irritate me。 Sometimes the characterization feels uneven。 There was a character who was abused and sexually assaulted and it felt like at times Jordan used that as a source of comedy。 And one of the trappings of fantasy fiction is also one of the things I admire most about the folks who write it。 The world building, history and endless list of characters takes a lot of creativity and imagination, but holy hell if you're going to insert every Tom, Dick and Harry at least give them names that are easy to distinguish from one another and make them *individuals* instead of carbon copies of each other。 。。。more

So far, this is my least favorite in this series。 Still a good book overall, this one just felt more purposeless than the others。 As is Jordan’s typical books, we get a LOT of character development and lack of real action for most of the book。 This usually works for me (and still does here) because the characters are so well drawn out。 Jordan continues to prove his skill with this, and was able to have some really amazing moments in this (basically every moment with Nynaeve) while allowing these So far, this is my least favorite in this series。 Still a good book overall, this one just felt more purposeless than the others。 As is Jordan’s typical books, we get a LOT of character development and lack of real action for most of the book。 This usually works for me (and still does here) because the characters are so well drawn out。 Jordan continues to prove his skill with this, and was able to have some really amazing moments in this (basically every moment with Nynaeve) while allowing these people to grow (Mat!!!! Went from dead last to me to one of my favorites)。 I just felt like we didn’t have any lead up to the end。 Rand just decided to do what he did, and the very end felt。。。anti-climatic。 There were also a lot of threads began and left untouched, and hopefully they will be pulled in future books but it just felt strange to have so many Egwene and Perrin chapters at the beginning and just lose sight of them halfway through。 Also definitely not enough Aviendha, and way too much Min。 I hate Min, and the caricature she is becoming。 BUT all the Ebou Dar chapters were wonderful, so they balanced out Min being the worst character for me。 I definitely can’t wait to continue, but am nervous that the next few books will be slow going。 I guess that’s the sacrifice you have to make when you have such a wide story with amazing characters!! 。。。more

There are still dull moments and confusing names, but it seems minor compared to the plot and character improvements。 I did feel like the ending came off as rushed and kind of anticlimactic - for several books Sammael has been portrayed as a huge threat, and he got killed of in two sentences with a combination of balefire and a cursed fog? Either that or he's not really dead。 Both are somewhat unsatisfying。 But this is a rather small complaint, as the overwhelming majority of this book I thoroughly enjoyed。 Hopefully the next books keep up the positive trend。 。。。more
