Summary

One of the world's most esteemed and influential psychologists, Roy F。 Baumeister, teams with New York Times science writer John Tierney to reveal the secrets of self-control and how to master it。 In Willpower, the pioneering researcher Roy F。 Baumeister collaborates with renowned New York Times science writer John Tierney to revolutionize our understanding of the most coveted human virtue: self-control。

In what became one of the most cited papers in social science literature, Baumeister discovered that willpower actually operates like a muscle: it can be strengthened with practice and fatigued by overuse。 Willpower is fueled by glucose, and it can be bolstered simply by replenishing the brain's store of fuel。 That's why eating and sleeping- and especially failing to do either of those-have such dramatic effects on self-control (and why dieters have such a hard time resisting temptation)。

Baumeister's latest research shows that we typically spend four hours every day resisting temptation。 No wonder people around the world rank a lack of self-control as their biggest weakness。 Willpower looks to the lives of entrepreneurs, parents, entertainers, and artists-including David Blaine, Eric Clapton, and others-who have flourished by improving their self-control。

The lessons from their stories and psychologists' experiments can help anyone。 You learn not only how to build willpower but also how to conserve it for crucial moments by setting the right goals and using the best new techniques for monitoring your progress。 Once you master these techniques and establish the right habits, willpower gets easier: you'll need less conscious mental energy to avoid temptation。 That's neither magic nor empty self-help sloganeering, but rather a solid path to a better life。

Combining the best of modern social science with practical wisdom, Baumeister and Tierney here share the definitive compendium of modern lessons in willpower。 As our society has moved away from the virtues of thrift and self-denial, it often feels helpless because we face more temptations than ever。 But we also have more knowledge and better tools for taking control of our lives。 However we define happiness-a close- knit family, a satisfying career, financial security-we won't reach it without mastering self-control。

Really useful look at how and why willpower works (or doesn't) and what to do about it。 Baumeister presents current research and data to support his claims:*"Willpower" is at the heart of all forms of self control and decision making; * it is finite but recoverable and can be effectively managed and grown with effort。* cultivating self-discipline and control to meet one's goals requires good strategy and planning, and a focus on "offensive" tricks and techniques over "defensive" (e。g。 putting te Really useful look at how and why willpower works (or doesn't) and what to do about it。 Baumeister presents current research and data to support his claims:*"Willpower" is at the heart of all forms of self control and decision making; * it is finite but recoverable and can be effectively managed and grown with effort。* cultivating self-discipline and control to meet one's goals requires good strategy and planning, and a focus on "offensive" tricks and techniques over "defensive" (e。g。 putting temptation where you can't get it, instead of fighting to resist an urge), clear rules, balanced rewards, and incremental habit building;* the tricks and techniques to impose self-discipline are many, varied, and very personal (whatever works!)While I want to rate this book 5-stars, I am waiting 4 months to do so。。。 if the book is as helpful as it seems to me today, I should be able to tie that to changes made using Baumeister's suggestions。 。。。more

A better title may be 'self-control' as this book touches on the many ways we try (and why we often fail) to exercise control over ourselves。。。 whether to resist temptations, be more productive or push ourselves harder。 With a broad range of studies, examples and tips, I found it useful and entertaining。 A better title may be 'self-control' as this book touches on the many ways we try (and why we often fail) to exercise control over ourselves。。。 whether to resist temptations, be more productive or push ourselves harder。 With a broad range of studies, examples and tips, I found it useful and entertaining。 。。。more

If you are short of time read the last chapter。 Sometimes the book will test your willpower with some irrelevant histories。

Discovering that We start each day with a finite source of willpower, how to not get trap by willpower depletion。 I especially loved the experiments that were conducted to explain each phenomenon。 Amazing insights and tools to live by。 I am definitely gonna check my notes on this book again。 Highly recommended!

This was a great and scientifically backed read on how we can improve our lives by understanding what saps our energy (willpower)。 It helped me understand how to focus what I need willpower for and to make sure I eat lunch :)

Book is a little over the top with self-references。 Middle of the book is a little slow but first few chapters and last few chapters definitely a good read。Key concepts: eliminate temptation and frame the decision on future self vs past self。

Surprising, entertaining and useful。 Intelligence and conscientiousness (or willpower, self-control, 。。。) are the two key traits predicting success, and of these only conscientiousness can be improved substantially by training。 Therefore the best way to increase your chances of success is to increase your willpower。 This book tells you why and how, backed by substantial scientific evidence (Baumeister is a leading figure in the scientific study of willpower)。

。。。more

Well written。 The authors weaves scientific evidence and anecdotal experiences and stories in a way that captivates the reader and convinces them that willpower is indeed the greatest human strength。 My only criticism was the chapter on glucose。。。 I think the author needs to do more research in to human metabolism and energy sources because glucose is not the brain’s only supply of energy。 Anyone whose heard of the Keto diet knows that the brain can utilize ketones。 Other than that。。。 Well done!
